‘That ’70s Show’ Star Danny Masterson Denies Sexual Assault Allegations Being Investigated by LAPD

UPDATED: The Los Angeles Police Department is conducting an ongoing investigation on sexual assault allegations against “That ’70s Show” star Danny Masterson, which the actor has vehemently denied.

According to journalist Tony Ortega, best known for his extensive reporting on the Church of Scientology, the Church allegedly covered up the allegations — stemming from the early 2000s. The LAPD didn’t comment on Scientology’s involvement with the investigation.

“The Los Angeles Police Department Robbery Homicide Division, Sexual Assault Section, is conducting an investigation involving the actor Danny Masterson,” reads a statement from the LAPD obtained by Variety on Friday. “Three women have come forward and disclosed that they were sexually assaulted by Masterson during the early 2000’s.”

Masterson denied the claims in a statement sent by his rep to Variety, saying the “false allegations appear to be motivated to boost Leah Remini’s anti-Scientology television series.” The accuser’s name has been redacted from the below statement.

“We are aware of [the alleged victim’s] 16-year-old allegations. It was only after [the alleged victim] was in contact with Leah Remini that she made allegations of sexual assault by Mr. Masterson. The alleged incident occurred in the middle of their six-year relationship, after which she continued to be his longtime girlfriend. Significantly, during their long relationship she made numerous inconsistent claims that she was previously raped by at least three other famous actors and musicians.

When Danny ended the relationship she continued to pursue him, even making threats to beat up his current wife Bijou Phillips unless she left him. In fact, we are informed by the Church that the only demand [the alleged victim] made of the Church after Danny broke up with her was asking for their help to intervene so the breakup would not be permanent.

We are aware also that approximately 14 years ago a woman referred to in the blog made allegations of sexual assault and that the LADP interviewed numerous witnesses and determined the claim had no merit. Based on reading the anti-Scientology blog that posted this story, these false allegations appear to be motivated to boost Leah Remini’s anti-Scientology television series since [the alleged victim] only came forward after connecting with Leah Remini.”

According to a police report obtained by Ortega, Masterson’s publicist, Jenni Weinman, who sent Variety the above statement, is listed as a witness to one of the sexual assaults.

Ortega reports that the women — Masterson’s fellow Scientology members — were pressured by the church not to report their accusations to the police. No charges were filed against the actor. The victims came forward after reaching out to Remini as a result of her A&E Scientology docu-series, “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath.”

“I met with the LAPD. I met with Detective Reyes, and I told her these victims deserve to be heard,” Remini told Ortega’s Underground Bunker. “I pointed out to her that there was a framed picture of a Scientologist on their wall, actor Michael Peña. Do you know what that says to a young Scientologist who comes here to seek justice? My experience with the LAPD has not been good. I asked her to do the right thing by these girls, and I told her that the world is watching.”

Remini’s rep didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Masterson played Steven Hyde in the long-running Fox sitcom “That ’70s Show.” He currently stars opposite Ashton Kutcher, another “’70s Show” alum, in the Netflix comedy “The Ranch.” The 40-year-old is married to Bijou Phillips.

How the Church of Scientology seemingly protected Danny Masterson amid rape allegations

Scientologist actor Danny Masterson has been accused of rape by four women — and the Church of Scientology claims it knew nothing of the allegations against its longtime member.

However, people deeply connected with the church say members did have knowledge of Masterson's alleged behavior way before the media reports.

Several sources told Fox News that the Church of Scientology systematically covers up misdeeds of its most prominent members — and Masterson, they say, is no exception.

Chris Shelton, a former member of the Church of Scientology and Sea Org from 1987-2012, said the church silences members who want to take complaints to law enforcement.

“The church works to protect the church first,” he told Fox News.

He said the next most important thing to Scientologists is to protect the members of the church and its public image.

“[The Church of Scientology] considers anyone outside the church to be a ‘wog,’ which is a defamatory word describing non-members... It creates an ‘us versus them’ mentality [and tells] members that ‘wogs’ at law enforcement won’t protect them.”

Danny Masterson holding a sign posing for the camera: Netflix announced Danny Masterson has been written out of the series "The Ranch" amid rape allegations against the actor.© Provided by Fox News Netflix announced Danny Masterson has been written out of the series "The Ranch" amid rape allegations against the actor.
Tony Ortega, editor of “The Underground Bunker,” told Fox News Scientologists are “not allowed to file a lawsuit against another Scientologist or report another Scientologist to the authorities.”

Ortega said this has directly impacted the women accusing Masterson of rape.

“For example, one of Masterson’s accusers … went to the church in 2003 to report the incident,” Ortega claimed.

Citing inside knowledge of the church, he alleged Scientology leaders asked the accuser to undergo “intensive counseling from May to December 2003, going back into her past lives to find out what evil thing she did then to cause this now.

"That is how Scientology handled sexual assault,” he added.

Ortega, a journalist who has dedicated his time to investigating the Church of Scientology, claimed members of the church are threatened with being ostracized from the tight-knit community if they go to authorities with sexual assault allegations.

Shelton said he saw similar practices during his time as a member of the church.

Shelton said Scientologists use an “internal justice system” that utilizes fear mongering to stop alleged sexual assault victims from going to the police. Shelton also said the interview sessions with alleged victims within the church are routinely filmed.

Ortega said one of Masterson’s accusers was “brutally interrogated” by a senior member of the organization.

“At the same time, Danny was being interrogated [by a senior member],” Ortega claimed. “… It would have been videotaped. They are manic about keeping records. To my knowledge, none of this was given to the LAPD.”

Ortega said when the alleged victim took her case to the LAPD to claim the “That ‘70s Show” star attacked her, the church stepped in once again.

“A little more than a year after the assault, the church bombarded the LAPD with affidavit after affidavit from church members defending Masterson. The church rallied around him.”

Shelton predicts the church will stand by Masterson, even as his public image begins to crumble. The actor denies any wrongdoing.

“They will keep lying, lying and lying,” Shelton said of the church. “They’ll cover up and double down.”

Masterson was fired by Netflix earlier this week, ending his run on the streaming service’s series “The Ranch.”

He has denied the claims against him, saying in part, "Law enforcement investigated these claims more than 15 years ago and determined them to be without merit. I have never been charged with a crime, let alone convicted of one."

In a statement to the media, the Church of Scientology denied it was involved in stifling the claims of Masterson’s accusers.

“The church adamantly denies that it ever ignores any allegations of criminal behavior, especially at the expense of alleged victims. What is being stated is utterly untrue. This has nothing to do with religion. This story is being manipulated to push a bigoted agenda. The church follows all laws and cooperates with law enforcement. Any statement or implication to the contrary is false.”

https://tonyortega.org/2018/02/14/prosecutors-prepare-charges-carrying-life-sentence-for-danny-masterson/

Quote:
PROSECUTORS PREPARE CHARGES CARRYING LIFE SENTENCE FOR DANNY MASTERSON

The Underground Bunker has learned that the Special Circumstances Committee in the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office has approved charging Scientology actor Danny Masterson with multiple violent rapes under a sex crimes penal code that carries with it a life sentence in prison.

Also known as California’s “one-strike law,” state penal code 667.61 has been described as “among the state’s stiffest criminal sentencing provisions,” not only because it carries penalties of 15-to-Life and 25-to-Life for sex crimes, but also because the 1994 code, amended under “Jessica’s Law” in 2006, has no statute of limitations.

After approval by the DA’s powerful internal committee made up of managers in the DA’s office, the case now waits for approval from the District Attorney herself, Jackie Lacey.

Four women have come forward to allege that Masterson raped them between 2001 and 2004. One of the four women, whom we’re referring to as “Victim B,” reported her allegations to the LAPD in 2004 in a case that was subsequently closed under intense pressure by the Church of Scientology. Three of the women, including Victim B, then came forward to the LAPD in the fall of 2016, and we broke the news of the police investigation last March. (All three of those women had been Scientologists at the time of their attacks.) A fourth victim later also came forward who was never a Scientologist. In April, the LAPD handed the case over for prosecution to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office.

Last fall, the Huffington Post reported that despite “overwhelming evidence” the case was taking so long because it had been put on a “slow roll” in the DA’s office. But now we’ve learned that part of the reason for the delay is that prosecutors are seeking such a severe penalty, which required review by the Special Circumstances Committee.

A defendant can be charged under penal code 667.61 if a rape is committed with special circumstances, including inflicting “aggravated mayhem or torture,” and for committing multiple rapes.

In previous stories, we’ve pointed out that Victim B told police that she had apparently been drugged at an April 2003 party at Masterson’s house, and when she came to she was being raped by Masterson. When she tried to struggle free, he allegedly choked her into unconsciousness. Victim C, meanwhile, told us that she was violently raped by Masterson even after telling him multiple times that she didn’t want to have sex with him. Like the other victims, Victim C believed that she had been drugged. “He flipped me over and just started pounding me. I was trying not to vomit. I said no like 50 times,” Victim C told us. “I was saying no a lot, but it didn’t matter to him. I kept trying not to puke on his bed while he was doing it. It was pretty brutal.” According to Victim A’s police report, “Vict went to bed and when she woke up and was bleeding from her anus. Vict confronted the suspect, he laug[h]ed at her and told her he had sex with her in her anus.”

Masterson has denied the allegations and has hired defense attorney Tom Mesereau. In December he was dropped by Netflix from The Ranch, a series that features his That ’70s Show costar Ashton Kutcher. He was also dropped by his management company, United Talent Agency.

When we broke the news about the LAPD investigation in March, Masterson’s representatives claimed that his accusers had been put up to their allegations by actress Leah Remini: “We are aware of [Victim A’s] 16-year-old allegations. It was only after [Victim A] was in contact with Leah Remini that she made allegations of sexual assault by Mr. Masterson…Based on reading the anti-Scientology blog that posted this story, these false allegations appear to be motivated to boost Leah Remini’s anti-Scientology television series since [Victim A] only came forward after connecting with Leah Remini.”

That isn’t true. In the fall of 2016, Victim A actually made her first report to her local police department, which then referred her case to the LAPD. (She was not living in California then, but she recently moved back to Los Angeles.) Only after she made that report to the police did she reach out to Remini, whose first season of A&E’s Scientology and the Aftermath was about to begin.

Remini not only didn’t put the victims up to reporting their allegations, when the DA’s office told her that an episode of Aftermath featuring interviews with the first three accusers might compromise the investigation, she convinced A&E not to air it.

If Remini gets a third season for Aftermath — and we still haven’t heard any definitive word about that — she may have another chance to air that episode with Masterson’s accusers, who are all now no longer members of the Church of Scientology.

Scientology’s involvement in these cases is integral to understanding them, even if some media outlets have all but erased the church from their stories.

Last year, for example, we reported that Victim B was “handled” by the Church of Scientology after her April 2003 rape by forcing her to go through months of counseling — known as auditing — at the Advanced Org of Los Angeles (AOLA) to search for acts of wrongdoing in her “past lives” that would explain why she had been victimized in her current life. Victim B spent tens of thousands of dollars on that counseling.

But then, on December 26, 2003, Victim B was given something called a “non-enturbulation order,” informing her that she was on the verge of being declared a “suppressive person,” Scientology’s version of excommunication. She was then ordered to report to the Hollywood Celebrity Centre for an interrogation known as a “security check.”

Such interrogations occur while the subject is holding on to the sensors of an “E-meter,” a simple device that reacts to tiny fluctuations in electrical current in the skin. Scientologists are conditioned to believe that the device can infallibly read their minds and can tell when they are holding back information (known as “withholds”), and so E-meters are very effective interrogation tools — Scientologists believe they cannot hide anything under such questioning.

Victim B was interrogated at the same time that Danny Masterson was also separately being questioned — both of them by the same “auditor,” a woman named Angie LaClaire.

What followed those interrogations was a bizarre scene set up by the church, when it insisted on putting Masterson and his accuser in the same room with three church members as observers. Masterson was told to listen carefully to her version of events because, he was told, he wasn’t properly “confronting” what he was accused of.

In other words, the Church of Scientology credited Victim B’s account enough to back her up as she confronted Masterson with what she remembered of that night, even if the church did not have LaClaire report her findings to the LAPD.

Twice during Victim B’s account, Masterson interrupted her to make jokes, and the observers reacted angrily to Masterson as Victim B refused to continue.

After that disastrous meeting, Victim B went to the LAPD on June 6, 2004, despite the church’s threats if she did so.

By July 2004, however, the LAPD told Victim B that they had been “bombarded” by an attorney representing Masterson, and the church had sent numerous affidavits by witnesses to contradict Victim B and support Masterson. Unless another victim came forward, Victim B was told, the investigation was being closed. (But the case was not found to be “without merit,” as Masterson and his representatives have claimed.)

After the case was closed, in August 2004 a church attorney brought Victim B a hand-written letter of apology from the actor, and asked her to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with Masterson so she would never make her allegations public. Under threats by Masterson’s attorney that she would be smeared in the press if she didn’t sign, and pressure from the church, which again threatened to “declare” her unless she complied, she signed the agreement and was paid in the low six figures.

Since then, the LAPD has lost all files from its 2004 investigation, according to reporting by the Huffington Post’s Yashar Ali.

Masterson’s defenders are quick to say that the allegations made by his four accusers are as much as 16 years old. What they are less apt to say is that Victim B went to the police, against the persuasive power of the Church of Scientology, and in a timely fashion.

Now, the DA’s office is convinced that Masterson deserves to be charged and should face life in prison. But will the DA herself, Jackie Lacey, agree?

LOL, that figures. What a punk this guy is, sorry I don't buy that multiple women just "make up" rape allegations.

This punk needs a beating, I am glad you didn't apologize to him.

5 women! And he's drugging them. Jeez. Ya, he deserves life.
I read up on what he did to those women. It doesn't get any worse than that. Outside of murder.

Also, who likes sleeping with someone who is unconscious? I'll never understand that.

It's obviously a severe, disgusting sickness. If someone doesn't want you, why would you want them? Should be a simple concept. But it's a power trip thing for those that commit these awful crimes.

When I first started reading, I was skeptical. I had thoughts of "16 years later?" But since "victim B" went to the police almost immediately, and since the claims by the women have a pattern, and since the Church of Scientology's involvement is crazy suspicious, I'm of the opinion that he's probably guilty. If I were a juror at his trial, the prosecution would still have to prove that to me, and I'd have an open mind. But yeah, he seems like a scumbag who probably did these things.

Actor Danny Masterson Charged With Raping Three Women By Los Angeles D.A., Faces 45 Years To Life In Prison

Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey announced today that actor Danny Masterson has been charged with raping three women in separate incidents at his home between 2001 and 2003.

The D.A.’s Office declined to file sexual assault charges against Masterson in two other cases, one for insufficient evidence and the other based upon the statute of limitations for the crime alleged.

The That ’70s Show star was charged with three counts of rape by force or fear. The case was filed for warrant yesterday.

According to law enforcement sources, Masterson was arrested late this morning with bond set at $3.3 million. He posted and was out by around 3 PM.

Masterson is accused of raping a 23-year-old woman between January and December 2001, according to the complaint.

In April 2003, the complaint states, “Masterson allegedly raped a 28-year-old woman and sometime between October and December of that year he is accused of raping a 23-year-old woman who he had invited to his Hollywood Hills home.”

Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller of the Sex Crimes Division, who is prosecuting the case, said all of the alleged crimes occurred at the defendant’s home.

If convicted as charged, Masterson faces a possible maximum sentence of 45 years to life in state prison.

Arraignment is scheduled for September 18.

Masterson was co-starring with former ’70s Show castmate Ashton Kutcher on Netflix’s The Ranch in December 2017 when news of the rape allegations surfaced, prompting his departure from the series.

Don't know if allegations are true or not. IMO rapist are deranged. They must be stimulated by the taking.

Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein and likes are famous and wealthy enough to have sex with many women without forcing themselves on them. Donate their brains to science. See if there are correlations.

BUUURN! on those others. It is weird how some go away forever and some manage to resurrect or go around never facing anything. You can never predict beforehand on the situations that aren't of Epstein, Cosby, Sandusky, Nassar, Weinstein scale. Those ones are pretty clear.

Glad 4 of those guys will rot to death in prison (at least so far). I'm not into the Epstein is alive gaga. Inmates commit suicide in prison all the time, even while they're on suicide watch which might require a lazy ass corrections officer to get up and stroll down the bank. They are inventive. I've seen a video of an inmate who committed suicide by standing on his top bunk and jumping down like a missile at the cement floor. You wouldn't think that would work, but he hit the crown of his head on that ultra strong concrete. There's another of a young female in a mental facility who was suicidal who had a camera in her room to watch her and she managed to hang herself regardless. A weird way too, she laid on the floor w/ her neck just above it and shoestrings tied with plastic bags and/or other materials that were holding pressure on her neck. I guess she felt more comfortable just dozing off as close to the ground as she could get to make it work rather than jumping from a bunk.

Thanks for the vivid descriptions
