G-Men hire ex-Panthers OC Mike Shula.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/22419862/new-york-giants-hire-mike-shula-new-offensive-coordinator

I think this can be a good hire. Shula got the most out of a (bleep) QB like Newton. An established QB with a returning star WR ought to be easy. The only thing though is that Giants need desperate help at OL. Their best two OL are Weston Richburg and Justin Pugh, and both are FA's.

Well Frank had his PC today so yes he's the coach.

I think he's a better choice than McDaniels but to see the locals do a 180 on the McDaniels hire is just laughable and eyeroll inducing to me.

Ehhhhh....I'll wait for Week 1. Let's not forget Belichick had this: https://sports.cbsimg.net/images/blogs/bill-belichick-jets-presser-10132014.jpg

I would still expect Shurmur to be running the offensive show there. And yes, you're right, the Giants' O line needs a serious overhaul.

Likely, but the two together ought to be a significant improvement.

At 39 though?

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/02/17/until-he-re-signs-brees-is-the-top-free-agent-quarterback/

Quote:
Until he re-signs, Brees is the top free-agent quarterback

Most regard Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins as the best available free-agent quarterback. And that probably will be the case, when March 14 rolls around. For now, however, there’s an even better quarterback set to hit the open market.

It’s Drew Brees. Signed to a six-year, $60 million deal by the Saints 12 years ago as an unrestricted free agent despite having more than 20 studs in his shoulder, Brees is now healthy. He’s also 39. But he has shown no signs of slippage in his play, and he could instantly make a bad team good (like the Browns), an average team very good (like the Jets or Broncos), a good team great (like the Cardinals), and a great team a Super Bowl champion (like the Vikings).

MDS pointed out that the Cleveland cap space could support an obscene offer, but Brees likely would regard the Browns as a rebuild that will take more years than he has left. If he’s going to leave a Saints team that already has all the signs of being a championship contender in 2018, he’d likely do it only for another championship contender.

Anyway, those are just some words I typed to tee up a video that presents our top five free-agent quarterbacks.

He'll stay in NO its much ado about nothing.

At this point who would want him beyond a year or two but NO?

I know the QB pool is desperate but still.

Yeah and when he's 45 he will break all sorts of records.

I doubt it.

This past season the offense didn't live and die by him I'll say that much.

Brees is not leaving the Saints, and the Saints are not letting him get away. They will find common ground.

The real intrigue is where Cousins ends up.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/former-eagles-snapper-dorenbos-to-get-movie-treatment/ar-BBJlytC?li=BBnba9I

Quote:
Former Eagles snapper Dorenbos to get movie treatment
long snapper Jon Dorenbos (46) will get a movie made about his life.
He might have had the most anonymous job in pro football, but his life story is about to head for Hollywood.

Jon Dorenbos was a long snapper for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2006 through 2016 before being traded to the New Orleans Saints in the preseason.

A couple of weeks after the trade, his career was over, but he was alive. During his physical, New Orleans doctors discovered an aortic aneurism, which required open-heart surgery.

Now the producer and director of such sports movies like "Varsity Blues" and "Coach Carter," Mike Tollin, a Philadelphia native, has plans to tell Dorenbos' story.

But that's only part of the 37-year-old Dorenbos' story.

He grew up in a Seattle suburb. His father worked for Microsoft and his mom a librarian. On Aug. 12, 1992, his father Alan beat his mother Kathie to death with a power tool, turned himself in the next day, leaving the 12-year-old Jon to live with extended family.

"It was fogged confusion. Time was passing, and I was just there," Dorenbos told Philadelphiaeagles.com.

With the help and love of that extended family and many friends, Dorenbos survived the tragedy, went to the University of Texas, El Paso and became an All-Pro player.

He's also a motivational speaker and a magician.

"I've embraced everything that has happened in my life. No hard feelings, no anger. I'm over all of that stuff," he said. "To now be at this stage in my career and to help kids or anybody who has dealt with what I've dealt with -- and unfortunately it happens way more than people think, and you realize after something traumatic happens that by no means you are alone -- is something I am happy to do."

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie invited Dorenbos to Minneapolis to Philadelphia beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. Jon Dorenbos is like a family to me and the Eagles, Lurie told reporters after his heart diagnosis.

"Mr. Lurie called me and said he wants me to be a part of it," Dorenbos told the New Orleans Advocate. "He said, 'We're going to win this, and you're going to get a ring.'"

Not only will he get a ring, Dorenbos will now get a movie. Tollin said he is in the process of hiring a writer.

There's no word yet on who might portray Dorenbos.

Payton is making noise about wanting Mayfield to be Brees’ replacement. Unless he goes to Cleveland a trade wouldn’t surprise me.

Whatever is going on, I'd chalk it up to each side trying to get some leverage in contract talks. They need him, and he needs the Saints. I'd put the odds of Brees playing for the Saints next season at 99%.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/22557505/former-miami-dolphins-lineman-jonathan-martin-detained-police-social-media-post

Quote:
Former Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Jonathan Martin has been detained for questioning in Los Angeles as a result of a threatening image posted on social media, according to reports.

"The individual we believe responsible for the social media post in question has been detained and our investigation is ongoing," the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement.

ABC News confirmed that Martin was the man detained by police.

It is unknown whether the Instagram account is Martin's account or if he posted the image.

The image on Instagram account said: "When you're a bully victim & a coward, your options are suicide, or revenge." The image showed a shotgun, ammunition and tagged four accounts, including those belonging to former Miami teammates Richie Incognito and Mike Pouncey. It also included hashtags for Harvard-Westlake, where he went to high school, and the Miami Dolphins.

I always knew there was something not right in that brain of his. Terrible player to begin with as he was a turnstile at LT, but his accusations only came out once he started getting public criticism over his play and the possibility of being cut came up. The Wells report became a hackjob over essentially overblown standard locker room teasing. Now Harvard Westlake closed because of this threat today.

Quote:
Report: Ex-Bear Charles Tillman is now an FBI agent
Former Bears cornerback Charles Tillman isn’t taking it easy in retirement.

Tillman has become an FBI agent, Sporting News reports. The FBI would not confirm the report.

Although he surely doesn’t need the money — Tillman made tens of millions of dollars in his NFL career — he likely sees this as an opportunity to serve his country. Tillman’s father was in the Army, and during his playing career Tillman worked with organizations that support members of the military.

Tillman was the Bears’ second-round draft pick in 2003 and played for them for 12 years. He then played one final year for the Panthers in 2015. He was a two-time Pro Bowler, once a first-team All-Pro, three times was given the Brian Piccolo Award as the player who best exemplifies the values of the Bears organization, and in 2013 was named the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year.

Tillman began the intense training to become an FBI agent last year, and he qualified just in time: The FBI does not accept new agents after their 37th birthdays, and Tillman’s 37th birthday is today.

Colts hire Tom Manning as tight ends coach

The Colts will once again have a Manning as part of their offense this season.

Tom Manning has been hired as the Colts’ tight ends coach, the Des Moines Register reports. Manning had previously been the offensive coordinator at Iowa State.

Manning is not related to Colts great Peyton Manning.

Although he hasn’t coached in the NFL before, Manning has earned a reputation as a very good offensive coordinator at the college level. In his two years calling plays at Iowa State, the Cyclones had their two most productive passing offenses in program history.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/02/24/jaguars-sign-blake-bortles-through-2020/

Quote:
Jaguars sign Blake Bortles through 2020

The Jaguars were exploring their quarterback options last week, but that process came to an end on Saturday because they are going to continue rolling with Blake Bortles.

PFT’s Mike Florio wondered if a long-term deal might be Jacksonville’s choice on Saturday afternoon and we got our answer later in the day. Shortly after Josina Anderson of ESPN reported that the Jaguars were working on a contract extension with Bortles, there were multiple reports that the Jaguars are giving Bortles a new three-year deal.

Those reports peg the total value of the deal at $54 million with another $12.5 million available through incentives.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that $26.5 million is guaranteed and the full details of the contract will show any outs the Jaguars have built in along the way to 2020. It seems clear that Bortles, who was set to make $19 million this season, is going to be the No.1 heading into the 2018 season at the very least.

That was far from a sure thing when the Jaguars benched him for a spell in favor of Chad Henne during the preseason, but two playoff wins and an assessment of the other options on the table convinced Jacksonville to stick with the bird in their hand.

The deal also takes one potential player in the free agent market for quarterbacks off the table with the start of the new league year almost around the corner.

Quote:
Geno Smith joins the flat earth “debate”

The ancient Greeks figured out that the earth was a sphere about 2,500 years ago, and Magellan proved it beyond a shadow of a doubt 500 years ago.

Geno Smith believes it’s still open to debate.

Smith said on Twitter that he is beginning to believe that NBA player and noted flat-earther Kyrie Irving has a point.

“I been studying this whole flat earth vs globe thing,” Smith wrote, “and I think I may be with Kyrie on this.”

Smith got more than 2,000 responses to that tweet, and he then engaged in a lengthy Twitter conversation with some who agreed with him and some who think he’s an idiot. In the end, however, he seemed persuaded by the evidence that the earth is, in fact, round.

“Hey guys I’m glad we had this talk today it was fun lol I know how you all love to debate on Twitter so this was good,” Smith wrote. “For the record Earth is a globe we know this. But why not listen to someone else’s beliefs or ‘truth.'”

Listening to others’ beliefs is never a bad idea. But if you’re listening to someone who believes the earth is flat, you’re not listening to “truth.”

ROFLCOPTER BORTLES GETS AN EXTENSION. Terrible. Absolutely terrible. Bortles is one of the worst QB's in the league. A JUGS football machine throws more accurately. His receivers keep getting put in near death situations trying to catch his wayward throws and it's why they keep ending up on DL. Not to mention Bortles is one of the laziest QB's this side of Ryan Leaf as he spends the least amount of time in the film room. Unless Cousins already told Jacksonville no, this is ludicious. They've taken themselves out of the running to get at least a competent QB for that budding D.

They almost got to the SB with the guy and watched another team win an SB with a backup QB. Its not as laughable as it was a year ago. There's not a whole lot out there at QB that would be that much better. Its not like the Broncos with Tebow where Peyton Manning became available if he weren't they would've stayed with Tebow.

I don't think Blake is a long term solution either but I get why they made this move.

When Foles is in a Reid/Chip system, he can produce. He at least has some accuracy to his throws. Even if he does make poor decisions from time to time, it's a helluva lot better than Flake Bortles who makes poor decisions repeatedly with his scattershot arm. That D isn't going to last very long. They've got a window where someone like Cousins could step in and they take the next step. I would take Case Keenum, Sam Bradford, Josh McNown, Matt Moore, and AJ McCarron over Bortles. It's all about systems and you gotta believe putting even an average QB in that Jags system would yield greater benefits than what over-coddled Bortles has done with.

Why are they locking themselves into further money though? I would have just played it out this season, and I assume he couldn't have passed his physical by March 14 so they were stuck with him for the '18 season. Fine. But why lock yourself in? He's one of the worst starting QB's in football.

I read somewhere on the Internet its a cap friendly deal so if it doesn't work out they can cut him.

Besides 2020 isn't that far away how many of these QBs end up staying for that long term deal?

They were sold by 3 games in which Bortles was babied and the offense was dumbed down for him so he would look efficient. When it came time for him to actually have to be a QB and lead a crucial drive, he missed so many open receivers and had terrible accuracy.

Otherwise, I agree. He wasn't going anywhere. If Jagoffs weren't going to enter the Cousins race, they'd at least draft a QB to take over after a year. If you're going to extend Flake, at least make it for less money and team options for 2nd/3rd years. If he doesn't take it, good luck on the market as he's not even replacement level. A contract like this makes no sense because of the length and money.
