Tank You Very Much… With the Mavs openly tanking, the Lakers would be hard-pressed to lose this one. Hopefully, there’s more than a few teams out there doing the same thing the next couple of months.
The Lakers worked on some of the mental deficiencies that plagued them last time these two teams faced. They quickly had the Mavs on their heels in the first quarter as a result.
Despite giving up 19 threes, the Lakers dominated the Mavericks from start to finish. The starters worked the ball through their bigs and the bench let their guard combo of Thomas and Ball drive their play. They’d cruise to the 124-102 blowout.
“I thought the way they were locked in and following the scouting report and game plan was really much better today than it was pre All Star Break,” Luke said. He wasn’t happy with some of the defensive breakdowns that gave up threes (and called a couple timeouts after some of those), but pleased with their focus.
Let’s start stringing some wins together.
Randle -- -- His fifth career triple-double with the 18-12-10. At halftime, he was on triple-double pace with 12 points, 7 board and 6 assists and was a +26. It’s part old-fashioned post-up basketball, part fastbreak guard skills. He draws attention and double teams in the post, and he’s finding cutters and shooters for scores out of that (including the set lob play to Ingram again). The Lakers really exploring his strengths there while Ball was out. Combine that with his ability to push out the break and find teammates and you get the big assist numbers. He must feel like Shaq going up against Barnes. Just a very efficient, methodical beatdown from Julius tonight. Luke rewarded him by bringing him back later in the fourth to finish off his triple-double, before going to garbage time. “Just trying to play the right way,” Randle said. Luke mentioned that they’ve been working on him slowing the game down a bit and reading the defense. I think the difference there is just putting the ball in his hands in the post for those reads versus out on the perimeter. The D can sag off him and load up on the perimeter, but has to help on him in the post. Completely different gravity. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 9-13 shooting (0-1 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 10 assists, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +27. The Action: He kicked to Hart in the corner for a three. He scooped up the loose ball, pushed out the break, attacked and powered in the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He posted up, spun away from the double and powered in the layup. He grabbed an offensive board and powered in a layup. He lost the handle in the paint after taking a pass. He dunked trailing the break. He lobbed to Ingram off the backscreen play and BI dunked. He was called for a travel as we went back to that sequence. He attacked around a defender for a score after Isaiah found him cross court. He hit Hart on the break for the layup. He kicked out on the break to IT for the three. He powered in a layup after shedding Barnes’s attempt to muscle him. Second Half: He was blocked by a double team. He hit Lopez cross court for a three. He pushed up the dribble, spun and powered in the layup wondering where the And-1 was. He took an inbounds, attacked to his strong hand and scored off the glass to beat the shotclock. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Ball. He attacked in transition and made the extra pass to Kuzma for the dunk. He kicked out to Kuzma from the post for a three. He kicked out to Ingram for three. He threw the ball off the glass to himself, but was stripped after recovering.
Ingram -- -- Three blocks from Ingram tonight. That mobility and length, especially challenging jumpers, should make him a really strong defender as he gathers more experience and strength. Love that his shot has been coming along in the past few weeks. Tonight, he sank his only three and both FTs. He had 10 points on 4-7 shooting at halftime and would make his only two attempts in the second half. With Lonzo and IT both coming off the bench, we’re still keeping BI as the PG. He’s increasingly reading the floor better and seeing the play before the play. I’m digging the continued ability to get Ingram the lob from Randle. Luke said he was awful in practice the last few days, but played really well defensively tonight and set the tone with KCP. BI said having a defensive mindset was his main focus tonight. A lot of his comments after the game were related to how he can be a better two-way player. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-9 shooting (1-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 3 blocks, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +27. The Action: He muscled his way to the rim but couldn’t finish the lefty layup attempt. He took the subsequent inbounds and swished the baseline jumper. He sank a pull-up baseline jumper on iso. Nice help D to force an airball, but he traveled on the other end to give it back. He missed a jumper, we got it back to him and he missed a prayer as he lost his balance on a drive. Quick explosion to his left and he reversed. He was called for a charge in the post. Pissed on that last call, he made a great recovery on the other end to block a shot on the perimeter. He then got the ball in transition, attacked with aggression and hit Julius trailing for a dunk. He cut off the backscreen and Julius lobbed to him for the dunk. He attacked a switch for FTs, he made both. Second Half: He sank a pull-up 17-footer off the early screen. He was picked working off the screen. He deflected a kickout to ignite a break. He swished a three on a Randle kickout.
Lopez -- -- Right to the post on three straight possessions against Dirk to start the game. That got Dirk into foul trouble and to the bench just a minute into the game. You’ve got to take advantage of those mismatches. It’s been a little bit of Luke’s blindspot by allowing smaller, weaker defenders to matchup with Lopez at time. Not tonight. Limited minutes from Lopez simply because Zubac played great again and then we had no need to bring him back during the fourth. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-6 shooting (1-3 from three, 1-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a +23. The Action: He attacked Dirk on the first possession and overpowered him for a score. He went after him again on the second possession and drew FTs under the hoop, he made one. Back in the post on the third possession and he drew FTs again, he missed both (Dirk out with just over a minute into the game). He up-faked at the three line, attacked and scored the layup. He missed a corner three on a kickout. He hit Hart for the layup on the backdoor cut. He rejected a layup attempt to ignite a break. Second Half: He missed a three. He posted up and kicked to KCP for three. He bricked a tough, hanging 15-footer. He sank a three on the Randle post kickout.
Hart -- -- Double-double tonight from Hart, although Luke said it shouldn’t count because he was chasing after an offensive board with under a minute left. Counts for me. He only made one of his five three attempts. One of those misses was a tough buzzer beater, but the perimeter shot wasn’t really falling for him. He got to the rim for several of his scores. Defensively, reasonable game although we let Matthews go off to start the second half briefly. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-13 shooting (1-5 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 34 minutes. He was a +24. The Action: He sank a corner three in transition. He pushed out the steal and hit KCP for the layup. He missed a three on a kickout, not quite set up on that one. He missed a three on a kickout. He attacked from the corner, couldn’t finish, but Zubac cleaned it up. He cut backdoor, took the pass, faked twice and scored the layup. He trailed the break, took the pass and muscled in a layup a few seconds later. He missed a three at the buzzer. Second Half: He missed a tip-in attempt. He scored a layup around the challenge. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. He couldn’t finish a layup on a drive right and wanted the foul. He missed a wing three. He attacked, spun and was blocked out of bounds. He drew FTs on a reverse attempt shortly later, he made one.
Caldwell-Pope -- -- Luke credited him with helping set the tone defensively (he had 3 steals tonight). There was a moment in the first half where Josh Hart picked up a foul and you could see KCP explain to him on how he should cover in that situation. Hart made the adjustment a few seconds later. KCP is young, but one of our vets and that little bit of leadership on the defensive end was nice to see. He went to the locker room midway through the first quarter after tweaking an ankle. It didn’t seem to impact him. Strong all-around game as he hit three threes, letting the game come to him. The shot selection has improved immensely after the awful chucking we saw earlier in the season. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-10 shooting (3-5 from three) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He fumbled a rebound out of bounds. Out on the break and Hart hit him filling the lane for a layup. He attacked to his left and scored a layup. Superb weakside read, he jumped the passing lane and took the steal for a dunk. He missed an 18-footer. He missed a wing three. He iso’d and missed a three. Second Half: He sank a three on a kickout from the post. He sank a wing three on a swing pass. He hit Hart for a layup. Not close on a leaning attempt in the paint. He sank a corner three on a kickout.
Ball -- -- With the minutes restriction, he came off the bench and will also sit out tomorrow. He immediately knocked down a three a moment after entering the game. He’d sink a couple more before the half. Those were his only points of the game, but good to see the three ball dropping. A little more playmaking as the game went along to finish with 6 assists in his 17 minutes. It will be interesting watching that combo play. Lonzo seems like an excellent fit with IT in that he’s got great size to defend SGs and he’s not ball dominant. His help D will also be key (he had a good double to help IT in the post against a bigger man and they got a stop). “Two playmakers on the court, I think we benefit from it,” Lonzo said. He said he feels his injury a little bit when he slides to the right but it didn’t seem to impact him much in this one. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-8 shooting (3-6 from three) to go with 7 boards, 6 assists, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: His first touch after entering the game and he drained the wing three. Short on his next three attempt on a kickout. He shed the pressure D, attacked the paint and hit Zubac for the dunk. He missed a wing three. He swished an open three out of timeout. He missed a 5-footer in the lane. He setup Zu for the dunk off the screen-roll. Dirk sagged off him and he swished the wing three, stepping back and launching. Second Half: He missed a corner three on a kickout. Bad cross-court pass in the backcourt to give up a dunk. He attacked and dumped it to Randle for the layup. He found Zubac with an over-the-shoulder feed in the paint.
Kuzma -- -- Poor first half, missing everything he took. Not sure if having his name dropped in among those in the NCAA payment scandal might mess with him, but I was hoping for an energized effort from Kuzma after the break. “It’s a legal matter…my main focus is on basketball right now,” Kuzma said. Reporters pressed him for information and he said that he and his team were still gathering information themselves. Kuzma scored 12 points in the second half tonight, knocking down a couple of threes and finishing strong around the rim, including a nice dunk off a Randle feed (he also had a missed dunk that cost Julius an assist, as well). The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-10 shooting (2-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He missed a three trailing the break. He missed a wing three. He missed a corner three. He blocked a layup attempt. Second Half: He dunked off the extra pass from Randle in transition. He attacked and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a wing three. He scored a layup, getting fouled in the process on the break, but no call. He sank a deep three on iso, no conscience. He changed pivot feet on the perimeter, turnover. He cheated Randle out of an assist trying to throw down a reverse dunk instead of taking the easy finish. He got the assist for him next time down hitting three on Randle’s kickout.
Thomas -- -- He and Lonzo both came in off the bench. Good flow between those two. No one was ball dominant and the ball moved. “We’re just two basketball players that know how to make plays,” IT said. Isaiah quietly worked his way to an efficient 17 points on 12 shots. He looks much better on the catch-and-shoot three attempts than trying to pull-up off the screens. Lonzo should help with playing to that current strength. Defensively, we allowed him to cover smaller guys like Barea instead of some of the weird stuff we did last time we played the Mavs. It’s very, very nice having a guy on the team who is automatic from the freethrow line. Most fans are suffering from a collective PTSD from the Lakers awful shooting there. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 5-12 shooting (2-7 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He missed a three from the wing. He missed a corner three. He missed a forced up-and-under attempt. He drew an FT on a foul before the ball was inbounded, he made it. Off the mark on a late pass in transition, turnover. Hesitation dribble off a handoff in the horns sequence and he scored a layup. He missed a pull-up three off the screen. He swiped an awful cross-court pass. He drew a double, backed it out and somehow found Randle for the score. He sank an open three in transition on the kickout from Randle. Second Half: He missed an open pull-up three. He attacked in early offense and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked and kicked to KCP for three. He sank a floater in the paint after faking the pocket pass on the screen-roll. He iso’d and sank a rainbow pull-up jumper from 18 feet at the buzzer. He turned the ball over after losing a shoe. He hit Zubac rolling for the dunk. He sank a wing three out of a timeout. He missed a pull-up three off the screen on his next touch. He attacked in early offense and drew FTs, he made both.
Zubac -- -- Zu back at it again. Now he’s got Ball and IT out there with him. He should feast on that, setting screens, rolling in space. He had 8 points and 5 boards in his first 9 minutes, getting to the offensive glass for 3 boards and a couple Mavs fouls. He added a few more buckets in the second half. A lot of strong finishes around the rim, using that size and length. He is earning minutes by imposing his size advantage on opponents. He played nearly as much as Lopez tonight. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-7 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He dunked off the drive and dish from Lonzo. He got fouled on an offensive board putback attempt for FTs, he made both. He was stripped by Dirk in the post. He dunked off the screen-roll with Ball. He kept an offensive board alive. He kept another offensive board alive, drawing a foul. He tipped in a missed drive. Second Half: He threw an outlet away and it led to a three. He dunked off the screen-roll. He scored at the front of the rim off the interior feed from Lonzo. No one picked him up and Ennis hit him for the dunk.
Ennis -- -- In for garbage time with 4 minutes left. He’s been a little bit of a ball hog in his brief minutes lately. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 1 assist in 5 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He attacked and scored a layup. He missed on a drive on his second trip down. He hit Zubac cutting for a dunk. He iso’d and bricked.
Bryant -- -- He sank a couple FTs for his only points. He got called for a tech after pulling down a board and standing over a fallen rebounder. Pretty weak. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-1 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards. He was a -1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He drew FTs on the offensive glass. He missed a tough jumper trying to beat the shotclock.
Walton -- -- This time, the Lakers went right to Lopez in the post to start the game. That got Dirk onto the bench with foul trouble in just over a minute. The Lakers led 8-0 when the first timeout came. Some better adjustments from Luke this time out, including with IT’s defensive assignments… KCP injured an ankle with the Lakers up 20-5 with 6 minutes left, so Luke brought in Lonzo and Isaiah for KCP and Hart. Timeout a few seconds later with the Lakers up 23-5… Up 16, Luke called a timeout after a couple Laker turnovers… Kuzma in for Lopez out of that… Julius out for Zubac with 1:49 left, up 14… The Lakers led 32-17 after the first quarter… He started a Zubac, Kuzma, KCP, Ball, Isaiah lineup… Timeout as the lead was cut to 8 with the Lakers giving up open looks… Hart in for Lonzo up 12… Up 10, Ingram in for Isaiah… Kuzma out for Randle with 6:20 left up 10… Zubac out (good run) with 4 minutes left, Lakers up 16. Lopez and Isaiah in for KCP… Ingram out with his second foul for KCP… The Lakers led 63-41 at the half… Angry timeout by Luke after we gave up back-to-back threes to start the third quarter… Matthews with four threes and the lead was trimmed to 13… The Lakers quickly pushed it back to 22... Up 19, Lonzo and IT in for KCP and Hart… Kuzma in shortly later for Lopez… Zubac in for Randle up 20 with a minute left… The Lakers led 95-76 heading into the fourth… He started the Zubac, Kuzma, Hart, Lonzo, IT lineup… Another timeout by Luke after the Lakers give up more threes. The lead cut to 12… Ingram in for Lonzo after 3 minutes… Randle in for Zubac up 19… Julius out for Bryant after the triple-double. Garbage time now…

The ideal KCP game. This is what makes him so tantalizing as a 25-year-old 3&D with great team chemistry. Is he worth 20-25m annually like he wanted in Detroit? No, but aside from his jail-time play and the occasional clunker, I'm really glad he's on this team. |

However, I don't think that Zu went 2-2 from three. _________________

Thanks DB! Great way to shake off a slump! Just about every Laker contributed.
Big kudos to Randle, BI, Zubac, Hart and Lonzo!
Lopez, KCP, IT looked good too!
Kuz had a cold start, but heated up late.
I'm feeling very good about how the Lakers are snapping out of the pre-ASB funk. Now, let's see if they can bring it tomorrow night as well!! |

I love seeing IT hitting that buzzer beater at the end of Q3. The Lakers do not have that kind of player anymore after Kobe left. Kuzma and BI have the potentials, but they are still learning. |

When was the last game two teammates got triple doubles in the same game? Look at Zo's numbers, if he wasn't on a minutes restriction he would have joined julius for sure. |

We looked like a team last night. We have some really good young talent that can play the game well when they share the ball and communicate on defense. |

Thanks DB.
Our guys seems so strong, physical and tough tonight.
BI looked strong and Randle is a beast every night.
Zubac looks big and strong again. He looks great every time he gets a chance to play.
Like to see Zubac get worked in with the starters at some point to see him against starters.
Really everyone looked good tonight. |

Thanks DB. Randle got the triple dub, but I felt like BI was the best player on the floor last night. I am loving his progression as a 2-way player.
Uncontested shots. Sure, the Mavs are tanking, but they set fantastic screens to get their teammates open. I envy that. Their players shooting uncontested shots looked like the Splash Bros. I wish our team set better screens so that we can get more open uncontested shots. |

Nice to see the collective team effort. We can afford restricting Lonzo's minutes and even Kuz having an off game.
Will be interesting seeing Randle going up against Randolph tonight. He fared well the last time they met. |

His shot chart was pretty ridiculous. Just a bunch of red dots right at the rim. Layups and dunks...and then picking apart the D with his passes. |

Tricky thing with that is Randle’s lack of floor spacing at the moment. Julius has all kinds gravity and impact when we let him work the paint, but the opposite when he’s on the perimeter (right now in his career). Zu is effective when he can roll or rebound. You could play both but it does help everyone when Lopez can spot up and make teams worry when Randle is beasting or when we’re running two-man stuff.
It’s not ideal but it could still be effective for stretches. Randle is pretty crafty at running into his perimeter screens to cause problems for teams that sag off him, so that helps. Plus if we play uptempo both Randle and Zu are good at that. |

Great game against the hated Mav's (at least I hate them, especially Barrera, Dirk and Cuban)!
Consider this; In his last 2 games Zubac is 14 out of 15 (that's 93% FG!)!
The biggest difference between Zu and Lopez is that Zu follows Clint Eastwood's advise from one of the Dirty Harry movies:
