4-0 Road Trip… With the injuries piling up, the rotations shortening and the final game of a road trip, the Lakers looked a little gassed tonight. Fouls and frustration mounted early. They fell back by as many as 17 points.

Somewhere in the fourth quarter they found their second wind.

They cut the lead down to 5 with 4 minutes left on back-to-back jumpers by G-league call up, Travis Wear. They cut it to 2 on a three by KCP with 3:41 left.

Then Lonzo Ball took over. He hit a three. Then another with 1:14 left to take a 2-point lead. Then the killer, a big wing three calling his own number with 42 seconds left to go up by 3.

After a great strip on D by KCP. Lonzo worked the two-man game to Randle for the score at the rim and the Lakers were up by 5 with 10 seconds left.

Earlier this season, that probably wasn’t a dagger score. Crazy things would happen to this team in the final seconds. The Spurs would hit a three to cut it to 2, but Luke would move to checkmate with an inbounds to Isaiah Thomas where the Spurs were forced to foul. IT is pretty much automatic and made both. Ball game.

It was a 25-9 run by the Lakers to close the game – a great finish after starting the game shooting 2-18. The Lakers took the 116-112 win, sweeping the road trip.

Ball -- -- If you watched UCLA, you saw a game or two or three like this where Lonzo took over down the stretch. So…Damn…Good…In the final minutes tonight. Lakers didn’t look like they had it in them tonight. They needed someone to get hot and take over. Lonzo stepped up and knocked them down. Three huge threes in those final possessions of crunch time. “I want our players playing with confidence and I want them wanting to take shots down the stretch and he did a nice job of that,” Luke said. He loves that left wing area to take threes because he can step to his left. He did that on that big one with 42 seconds left. Lonzo hit six threes to night, scoring all of his points from there. He was three boards short of a triple double as he also added in 11 assists. (A big assist to Julius with 10 seconds left as they ran the two-man game.) He picked up some foul trouble in the first quarter after getting a second foul on a rare charge in transition. He’d get his third late in the second quarter. The Lakers would have four players with three fouls in the first half. So Lonzo had to deal with the foul issues and handled it like a pro. Love seeing him bring out the alpha and going for the kill down the stretch tonight. They’ve preached for Lonzo to be aggressive since his first game or two in the summer league. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-12 shooting (6-10 from three) to go with 7 boards, 11 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He missed a layup on a drive. He missed a step-back wing three. His man went under the screen, so he swished the three. He charged on the break, picking up his second foul with 2 minutes left. He got middle off the screen and hit Randle rolling for the layup. He hit Lopez for a three. He shoveled it ahead to IT in transition for a layup. He swatted Pau out of bounds on help D. He took a bad foul at the front of the rim trying to prevent a score and had to sit (just let that go). Second Half: He fumbled away a defensive board. He attacked three defenders in transition and was easily denied. He swished a three on a kickout. He airballed a wing three next time down (fading back caused that miss). Out of a timeout, he threw a pass out of bounds (not what we set up and he might have freelanced or was hoping a shooter was going to pop out there). Next time down, he ran a double drag screen and hit KCP for a three (so that might have been the play). He missed a wing three on a kickout. He swished a corner three on a kickout next time down. Great effort in transition D to deflect a pass and save the ball back in to a teammate. He missed a deep three as the D went under (this might be the one where Luke told him to keep shooting…Luke said he might have thrown a curse word in there). He drained a big three out of a timeout to cut it to 1 with 2:46 left. He drained another huge three to take a 2-point lead with 1:14 left. Next time down, he worked off the high screen, waited for the D to get stuck on the screen and hit the three with 42 seconds left to lead by 3. Next time down, Lonzo worked the two-man game and hit Randle rolling for the layup to go up by 5.

Randle -- -- He started off a little slow as we tried to work the ball through him in the post. The Laker offense sputtered a bit with him, but Randle still had 15 points on 4-9 shooting by halftime. He becoming relentless. All that that work in the offseason. The conditioning. He’s imposing his physicality on opponents consistently (he was delivering some blows to guys again tonight). The game turned in the fourth quarter when we brought Julius back in to defend at the C spot. He would knock down a couple big FTs with 1:59 left to take a 1-point lead (excellent job again from the line tonight…both getting there and knocking them down). He had a big kickout to Lonzo for a three shortly later. Then he scored the dagger layup with 10 seconds left off the two-man game with Lonzo. That was a nice one-two punch down the stretch from our youth. I’ve said it from early on in this season, and will keep saying it, but he’s got to be part of our young core. Got to keep him this offseason. Hopefully, the market is reasonable. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 8-15 shooting (9-11 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He was tied up a drive to start the game. He missed a jumphook off glass. He sank a 17-footer left open for the Lakers first score. He drew FTs on a dive cut, he made both. He rejected Pau on help and pushed out the break to Kuzma for FTs. He passed up an open three and missed a more challenged 18-footer. He missed a jumphook, got it back and missed the second attempt, wanting a foul call. He should have finished a monster And-1 dunk, he made both FTs. He took an outlet for an uncontested dunk. He drew FTs filling the lane on the break, he made both. He drew FTs on a roll to the hoop, he made one. He was called for an offensive foul, using an off arm as he went up. He reversed on the screen-roll with Lonzo. He dunked the lob from IT on the screen-roll. Second Half: He was blocked in the paint trying to post up only to have the D converge. He picked up a tech. He muscled in a layup cutting down the lane. He attacked and kicked to Lonzo for three. He scored a putback. He spun to the middle and scored an And-1 at the rim, he missed the FT. He couldn’t finish a lob. He attacked from the wing and drew FTs with 1:59 left down 1, he made both to take the lead. In trouble in the paint, he kicked out and Lonzo hit a huge three. He scored a layup with around Pau with 10 seconds left working off the two-=man game with Lonzo.

Kuzma -- -- He got the start at SF with our current injury situation. You have Deng, of course, but you really want Deng playing PF if anything. Kuzma would rotate over to the PF at times as we went smaller. Not a great game from him on either end. He struggled a bit in the first half, but scratched out 9 points by hitting a couple of threes and getting in on a tip in. You’d like him to use that size at SF for some offensive glass work, if possible, and we saw him make a good effort with 4 offensive baords. But he couldn’t really get on track with anything (even going 1-4 from the line). He’s got to work on his shot selection a bit. Just too many off-balance jumpers or drives where he gets into trouble. Some of that tonight. His decision making will improve like most rookies and that stuff will clean up more. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-13 shooting (2-6 from three, 1-4 from the line) to go with 8 boards (4 offensive), 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 5 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He drew FTs filling the lane on the break with Randle, he made one. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He was stripped on a drive. He couldn’t handle a pass on a cut. He missed a tip-in attempt. He missed a jumphook on a rim run, but tipped it back in. He swished the corner three off the inbounds pass. He missed on a drive right, not getting close enough to the rim. Horrible pass in the back court, turnover. He posted up and hit KCP cutting for a layup. He missed a three next time down in early offense. He missed a challenged drive. He sank a corner three on a swing pass at the end of the half. Second Half: He missed a three straight away. He missed an off-balance pull-up from the top of the key (shot selection, son). He missed a corner three. He was shoved from behind on a defensive board for FTs, he missed both. He cleaned up a missed layup. Then got worked on iso D for an And-1 on the other end.

Lopez -- -- He sank a couple of threes, but looked better, I thought, when we was trying to work the post in the second half. Pau’s not a great defender and you’ve got to go after that. Brook had the team low -17 tonight. When we’re looking a bit sluggish, he’s not exactly an energy, spark kind of guy. When we closed this one, we ran with Julius at the C spot and were switching a lot. No Isaiah in there in the final few minutes, either…so we could do that. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-12 shooting (2-4 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He missed a slow motion runner. He didn’t hit anything on a rim run attempt. He choked a short one in the paint over a smaller man. He missed an open three trailing the break. He sank a wing three when Parker switched on to him and Lonzo found him on the kickout. He missed an elbow fade. We got it back and Lopez had Parker on him after that scramble so we found him for an And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He swished a wing three. Second Half: He hit a face-up bank from the wing (probably the first bank from midrange he’s taken all year). He worked the post, spun and hit the short one off glass. He backed down Pau and hit the easy step-back in the paint. He missed a deep three. He threw a cross-court pass to a Spur.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Let’s give KCP a compliment sandwich. Huge three with 3:41 left to cut the lead to 2. Great job with that. The forced, turnaround airball from about 20 feet out next time down…not so good. Don’t take those. Ever. Great job, though, with that big time steal, stripping a man on the sideline in one of our final defensive stands. That was probably the defensive play of the game. A ton of minute tonight for KCP with shortened rotation. He crashed the glass for 13 boards to take over that Josh Hart role again. Occasionally, he’s missed a box out doing that, but having our guards board like that is important. He’s been bringing some strong consistent ball lately. There’s no way he’s getting the big contract he wants this offseason. The market won’t be there, but he’s elevating his game and adding the boards in the mix is great to see. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-13 shooting (3-5 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 13 boards, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 43 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He let a man leak out and score a layup off a jumpball. He missed an off-balance bank attempt. He drained a corner three on a kickout. No boxout and he gave up a putback dunk. He swiped a lob pass in transition. He missed a three coming off the pindown. He fumbled away a defensive board. He cut of Kuzma’s post up, took the pass and scored a layup. He telegraphed a perimeter pass, turnover. Second Half: He sank a sideline pull-up jumper. He hit a pull-up at the FT line curling off a screen. He sank a three as we worked off double drag screen. He sank a pull-up wing jumper. He missed a putback attempt. He missed a wing three. He missed a twisting layup attempt. He made a tech FT. He drilled a huge three with 3:41 left to cut to it to 2. We got a stop, but a horrible turnaround from 20 feet out next time down to airball by about 5 feet. Huge steal on the sideline, stripping his man.

Thomas -- -- Good to have a guy like that who allows you to checkmate an opponent when you’ve got an intentional foul situation. IT came back in the game with 6 seconds left, took the foul, made both and iced the game. Who knows what happens in this one without that simple, but huge role. It wasn’t a great game from him (he’d make just 1-5 from three and have 5 turnovers), but he was able to scratch out points when we were struggling. He had 13 points on 4-8 shooting at the half. He sprayed the ball around a bit too much getting too deep into the paint and trying to find teammates as an afterthought in some of those situations. Still, he was finding teammates and also able to scratch out points in the midrange. Good to see some of those short midrange shots that were usually automatic for him looking automatic tonight. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 6-16 shooting (1-5 from three, 8-8 from the line) to go with 1 board, 7 assists, 5 turnovers and 1 foul in 29 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He probed and threw a pass out of bounds. He missed a wing three in early offense. He attacked baseline and threw it to a Spur. He drew FTs on a perimeter foul, attacking with speed, he made both. He was blocked on a layup attempt. He attacked the paint and drew more FTs, he made both. He hit KCP for the corner three off a screen-roll kickout. He swished a deep three. He sank a floating, pull-up 15-footer working off the screen. Good job holding ground in the post, challenging, grabbing the board and getting fouled. He missed an elbow fade. His bounce pass was picked off. He hit a floater over a big in transition. He busted out off a Laker steal and we hit him for the layup. He found Lopez with a mismatch under the hoop for an And-1. He curled off the screen and threw up a high, slow lob that Randle ran under to dunk. He missed a high scoop attempt. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He hit Lonzo for a three. He missed an elbow pull-up. He attacked in transition behind defenders’ backs and was fouled for FTs, he made both. He got in too deep in transition and threw it away. He missed a step-back 18-footer over Pau. He missed a tough running three at the buzzer. Awful perimeter pass, turnover. He iso’d on a mismatch and kicked to Wear for the sideline three. He swished an easy 14-footer working off the screen. He missed a fading 17-footer. He drew a pushoff on a lob on D to get a stop (nice job going down). He froze the D with a hesitation and took it for a layup, wondering why there was no foul call. He missed a three taking a pass as he came off a high screen. He was fouled with 5.5 seconds left up 2, he made both FTs.

Zubac -- -- He let too many easy looks get past him in the paint in the first half. In the second half, we saw some better challenges around the rim and when they tried to go after him on iso. Much better job trying to make a difference on that end. Offensively, he made a couple of FTs. We didn’t get the same two-man action flowing with him in this one. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-2 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 14 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: Awful outlet throwing it to no one. Nice challenge on a drive, then he recovered to his man to challenge that shot. On the other end, he hit Randle with an extra pass for FTs. He missed a jumphook in the post. Several scores around him without much challenge. Second Half: A nice challenge on Manu’s drive to get a stop. He missed a tip. He held ground on iso D and forced an airball. He was hit in the paint on a jumper for FTs, he made both.

Wear -- -- Reunite the Summer League team! We don’t seem to lose with Ball, Kuzma and Wear out there. All three of those guys were battling hard in that fourth quarter tonight. “I’ve been thinking of this moment for three years,” Wear said. Growing up in Huntington Beach, playing for the Summer League Lakers, the South Bay Lakers and now helping the real purple and gold to a tough road win…got to love it. Definitely pulling for him. He was huge in that fourth quarter and Luke rode him the entire quarter. “I thought Travis Wear was really big for us,” Luke said. “And not making shots, which is the main thing we brought him out here for, but in playing defense. He was communicating. They were iso’ing Rudy Gay on him who’s as good a one-on-one player as there is in the league and he did a good job with back-to-back stops.” Randle: “He was bigtime, man.” He got in for the final minute of the first half. You could see him an Isaiah talking about how IT wanted to run the two-man game after that. Then we went back to him again for extended run off the bench in the second half. The fourth quarter starting unit with Wear, Zubac and Ennis was sketchy, but they at least held serve. Once Luke brought back in some of his regulars to run with Wear, they got into a flow on both ends. He sank a three, a pull-up jumper and then Luke set up a play out of a timeout off a pindown for a wing jumper, which he drained. The Spurs tried to counter by trying to attack him. “Only white kid out there, I guess they went at him,” Kuzma said. Wear held his own. “Just locking in and not letting my guy score,” Wear said. He mentioned playing with South Bay made the transition here pretty easy. Great job tonight with the big +18. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-6 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 2 boards and no fouls in 13 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He missed a wing three on a kickout. Second Half: He sank a sideline three off a kickout from IT. He missed an open wing three next time down in transition. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He sank a pull-up at the top of the key. Out of a timeout, he came off a pindown to take the pass and hit the wing jumper. Nearly a strip against Gay on iso D, forcing him to pass it out.

Ennis -- -- He came in with a couple minutes left in the first quarter when Lonzo picked up his second foul. Down Ingram, Hart (and releasing Brewer), the Lakers can’t afford foul trouble. Ennis plays offense like he’s wearing ankle weights. A couple reasonable moments on D tonight. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed a drive but got it back. Second Half: Wild drive trying to attack and he wasn’t close.

Payton -- -- He came in with a minute left to go in the third quarter. The game still very much in the balance. Just giving our guys a breather. The Stats: He didn’t score on o-1 shooting in 1 minute. He was a -3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a dunk attempt getting challenged, but Kuzma cleaned it up.

Walton -- -- Not a tough game to coach with all the injuries, the foul trouble and at the end of the roadtrip… Offense sputtering to start the game, just 5 points after 4+ minutes. They trailed by 3 when the timeout came. Lakers were 1-10 shooting… This lineup is just awful. Now only 5 points after 6 minutes and the Lakers trailed by 9 when IT came in for KCP… The Lakers trailed 19-9 when Zubac came in for Lopez with 4:25 left… KCP in for Kuzma down 8… Lonzo out for Ennis with 2 minutes left after picking up his second foul, Lakers down 5… Kuzma back in for Randle with 1:28 left, Lakers down 5… The Lakers trailed 30-23 after the first quarter… Randle in for Zubac, who was ineffective defensively… Lopez in for Kuzma with 8 minutes left down 4… Ennis out for Lonzo with 7:30 left, Lakers down 6… They cut it down to 2 to force a timeout… Randle picked up his third foul and had to sit, down 4 with 3:17 left. Kuzma in… Ennis back in for Lonzo who picked up his third foul, Lakers down 5… Luke picked up a tech as we trailed by 8 and had multiple Lakers in foul trouble… Wear in for KCP who picked up foul trouble… The Lakers trailed 60-53 heading into the half. The Lakers shot 39% in the half and had 11 turnovers… Down 13 after a sluggish start on the defensive end and Luke called a timeout… IT in for Kuzma down 14… Spurs timeout down 12… Kuzma and Zubac in for Lopez and Randle… GP and Ennis in with 45 seconds left to go with Thomas, Zubac and Kuzma… The Lakers trailed 91-80 heading into the fourth… He started the Zubac, Wear, KCP, Ennis, IT lineup. Yikes… They had a chance to cut it down after a series of scores, but then the lead ballooned to 12 and Luke called a timeout… He brought back in Randle, Kuzma and Ball to go with Wear and KCP. They cut it to 7 with 4:47 left when a timeout came… Great play out of that timeout after we got the stop to set up Wear on a pindown for an open wing jumper and cut it to 5… They cut it to 2 and had a chance to tie and KCP threw up a horrible turnaround jumper. The Spurs would score and Luke called a timeout down 4 with 3 minutes left. Very good timeout here to regain composure after that. (Zo would then hit a three out of that to cut it to 1)… Luke called a timeout up 2. Got to set up a play to get the ball to IT with 6 seconds left. They did. Ball game…

Good defense from Wear tonight, despite the flub leading to Gay’s 3 pointer. He moves his feet well.

We spotted the Spurs 13 minutes of Ennis playing time to make up for their lack of LA and Kwahi and still win!

Thanks D!! Great write-up on an excellent win!!

Lonzo flat-out Kobe'd the Spurs late in the game. WOW.

As down as we were at the 3 with No Ingram NO Hart no Brewer, we had no business winning this game in San Antonio, but this team has some serious grit.

5-0 since the break! 4-0 roadie! Randle imposing, Lonzo balling, IT proving haters wrong and now Travis Wear contributing.

I hope PG13 can still play shooting guard... Because as far as Randle... In the fine words of Teddy KGB, "Pay that man his money!"

Thanks for your recaps as always DB.

Even better against a team like the Spurs.

Quality win in a quality circumstances.

Bye.

Thanks DB. Great stuff as always.

re: Zo. On his 5th 3ptr, he was pretty demonstrative letting guys know he was open. He didn't shy away from the moment. Less than 3 minutes left, on the road vs a veteran Spurs team coached by Pop - he confidently let it fly.

As his teammates were all excited after he made it, he seemed stoic - like the moment wasn't too big for him. And he's only a rookie? I'll be curious to see Undisputed and First Take tomorrow to see how they describe his performance on this 4-0 roadie. Regardless of the national media's narrative, we got the best pick in the draft.
