Quote:
Report: Cavaliers suspended J.R. Smith for throwing bowl of soup at assistant coach Damon Jones

The Cavaliers suspended J.R. Smith for their loss to the 76ers due to “detrimental conduct.”

What does that mean?

Brian Windhorst and Dave McMenamin of ESPN:

Cleveland Cavaliers guard JR Smith earned his one-game suspension from the team Thursday by throwing a bowl of soup at assistant coach Damon Jones, multiple sources with knowledge of the incident told ESPN.

This will go right up there in the legend of J.R. Smith along with offering the pipe, untying shoelaces and getting fined more than $1 million during his season in China (for, among other things, once ordering thousands of dollars worth of unwanted room service to his team’s bill just to see whether he could).

No soup for you!!!! Come back one game!

If I were to make a list of athletes I expect to be in the news in a negative way after they retire, JR would be among the top ones. If getting thrown in jail, getting married and having kid hasn't matured him what will? He's 32 now.

Add to the list from OP's quote, throwing gang signs after 3's back in the Denver days, partying with Rihanna the night before a playoff game, bashing Jeremy Lin's contract with the Rockets, etc. Lucky for Lebron though, without JR and Kyrie, he doesn't win game 7 vs the Warriors. And Damon Jones was a way better player than Smith was, so he should be the one throwing soup at JR.

At first I got him confused with Dahntay Jones, who was with the team last season. That made some sense why he'd get a bowl of soup thrown at him as he had that rep as a dirty player.

Damon Jones became an assistant a couple seasons ago, think when Lue took over. He also packed on a few pounds from his playing days.

yeah, but it looks like he worked his way up through coaching in the G League first...so I guess I have to respect that.

Dude's negligence behind the wheel lead to an accident that killed his friend (a 21 yr old). That bowl of soup suddenly doesn't seem so bad unless it was scalding hot.

Quote:
Rumor: J.R. Smith’s soup throw stemmed from him not sharing Damon Jones’ joking mood

The big question of J.R. Smith‘s soup throw has already been answered: chicken tortilla.

But other questions remain, like why would Smith throw a bowl of soup at Cavaliers assistant coach Damon Jones?

Ramona Shelburne of ESPN:

I don’t know the whole story. The version of what I had heard with J.R. was he and Damon have sort of a playful, joking, make-fun-of-each-other relationship.

I wasn’t there, so I don’t want to say this is totally accurate. But this is the version I’ve heard, is that sometimes a joke isn’t so funny if you’re not in the right mood for it, right? When someone is messing with you, you’re just not in the place to take that or do that, and it doesn’t go over right. And I think that’s what kind of led to this soup-gate thing.

He’s got a young baby at home. He’s dealing with a lot of stuff personally. Obviously, there’s frustration from shooting whatever he’s shooting at this point. It’s right around 30% from the field, not so great. There’s a lot of that.

This would be relatively benign on the scale of soup-throw motives. Smith is understandably frustrated. If he and Jones have a good relationship overall, it might have been an isolated case of Jones misreading Smith’s mood.

But because this version of the story is so harmless, it makes sense the Cavaliers would push it – whether or not it’s true.

Either way, Cleveland needs Smith in a different headspace entering the playoffs, one where he makes more 3-pointers and throws less soup.

The victim of the J.R. Smith thrown-soup incident finally speaks out

Who throws soup? Honestly!

J.R. Smith did. Back in 2018, social media went (soup to) nuts over the then-Cleveland Cavaliers guard being suspended one game for throwing a bowl of some brothy goodness at assistant coach Damon Jones.

People were guessing what kind of soup it was — turned out it was chicken tortilla, which we learned after — and wondering what the story was behind the bizarre incident.

This week, we got an answer: Jones appeared on Jalen & Jacoby and spoke out about what went down that day in the Cavs’ locker room that sparked the soup toss:

Let’s break down what we learned:

1. Smith apologized to Jones. That’s important.

2. It was a whole bowl and the soup that got thrown.

3. It was “the first bowl out of pot, so it was hot as hell.” That’s a vital detail because it wasn’t like Smith was in the middle of his meal before the throw. It means he threw it soon after it was ladled. Owwwww.

4. They didn’t talk for “probably” three months. But one night, they talked and moved on.

Thus ends one of the weirder locker room incidents in recent memory.
