There For The Taking… The Lakers were up by 11 with 5:26 left in this one.

Less than 2 minutes later, the score was tied and they had to find a way to cool off a red hot Damian Lillard, who was bombing threes.

They struggled to get the ball out of his hands, but the game was still there for them. They had two big possessions in a row where KCP came up empty (should have had FTs on one of them…seemed like the Lakers got nickel and dimed all night by the refs).

The Lakers then forced misses on the other end but gave up two offensive boards as their young rookies both tried leaking out instead of crashing the glass. They were finally forced to foul with 7.7 left down 3. Luckily, C.J. McCollum missed both of his FTs. Timeout Lakers with a chance to even things up.

Things could have gone horrible wrong for the Blazers as they fouled the Lakers before the ball was inbounded. L.A. got one FT and the ball. But like CJ on one end, IT returned the favor and missed the freethrow. Make that and a three and you win the game. Make that FT and the Blazers can’t sit on the three line, but have to protect all parts of the court.

Instead, Isaiah missed and on the subsequent inbounds he was stripped as he pulled up for a three. They could have tied or won the game there, but came up empty.

Lillard would finish with 39 points and the Lakers fell 108-103. Good effort by the Lakers down two key players against a team that is rolling right now, but they couldn’t close the deal.

Ball -- -- The shot was not falling early on, then he picked up foul trouble in the first quarter. Not a great start for him and certainly some cheap fouls. He’d come back and hit three threes in the game, including a big one to tie it up with 1:51 left. Nice to see that one go down after Lillard was taking it to him. Really, just some good shots from Lillard at times even from deep. Lonzo needed to be a little more locked in on those than he was, for sure. “That’s on me,” Lonzo said. Luke: “When someone that good gets hot we can’t let him raise up and get rhythm.” Work on those FTs, Zo. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-9 shooting (3-7 from three, 1-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He swiped a pass at midcourt but missed a three. He got caught flatfooted and gave up a layup. He missed a deep three. He missed an 8-footer. He was hit on a three on iso against a big for FTs, he made just one. He sank a wing three off the swing-swing started by Randle’s kickout. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He picked up his third foul on a late whistle on a good challenge (they said he got into the feet or something, weak). Second Half: He attacked the paint and couldn’t finish. He stripped his man on the perimeter. He hit Kuzma for a three. He lost a ball on a baseline drive. He swished a sideline three. He missed a corner three out of a timeout. He drained a wing three on a switch to tie it up with 1:51 left.

Randle -- -- Seems like these are becoming average games for him. Randle with another 21 and 9 tonight. He had 10 points on 5-9 shooting at the half and made 2-4 in the second half (got to the line a lot in that third quarter). He only had 2 assists, but seemed like he did a good job finding teammates when he drew a crowd. I know he had at least one hockey assist type kickout that led to a swing-swing three. Best play of the night was a two-man sequence with Isaiah where he no-looked to Randle and Julius crammed in a big’s face. Some very good moments defensively when he switched onto smaller guards. Early on in this game, he was forcing Lillard into turnovers trying to pass after not getting past Randle on drives. Lillard got a three on him late in the game, though. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 7-13 shooting (7-8 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He missed an off-balance runner on the first possession. He scooped up a loose ball, pushed it out, attacked right and dunked. He attacked right, but brought it back left and was forced into a brick. He worked a series of moves in the post but blew the layup (he wanted the call). He scored a jumphook on the screen-roll as the D collapsed on him. He kicked out to Lopez for the three. Good challenge on help to get a stop. He spun in the post and powered in a layup. He overpowered Davis on a drive left for a layup. He forced a guard into a bad pass on iso D. He drew the D working his way into the paint and the kickout led to an eventual three. He got tapped on a jumphook off the glass. He threw down on a big after taking the interior no-looker from IT (then gave him a stare down). Second Half: He bumped a man off after taking an interior feed and powered up for the score. He stripped a big on the other end. Quick baseline drive and he drew FTs next time down, he made both. Quick attack from the perimeter again next time down to overpower Collins again for more FTs, he made one. He switched and forced Lillard to throw it away on the drive. His kickout hit a Blazer in the face, oops, turnover. He drew FTs on the perimeter reach, he made both. He overpowered Davis for FTs in the post, he made both. He couldn’t finish a one-handed lob throwdown. He powered up in the post but couldn’t finish. He scored a layup when Lopez found him under the hoop after working the two-man game. He was stripped trying to create on iso. He blocked or forced a turnover on the other end with a nice challenge.

Kuzma -- -- Why are you backing out to start to head down court on one of those final possessions? Get in there to get a board. You’re a PF. This is a final defensive stand. When we go small, he’s got to be in there rebounding (Lonzo, too, who did the same thing), but especially in that kind of situation. He actually had some better moments on D in this one (a couple of blocks, even some good rebounding), but that last minute of non-rebounding hurt. We went to him a couple of times in the post in crunch time when we had a mismatch and he came through for some points on those (missed a FT, but got it back). He also sank a couple of threes. Nearly a double-double tonight playing mostly the SF but some PF down the stretch. “We had a chance, but we let it slip away,” Kuzma said. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-10 shooting (2-6 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: Nice help D rotation to prevent a score at the rim and ignite the break. He fumbled away a pass on the perimeter (it was a little low, but still hit him in the hands). He missed a rushed elbow jumper. He dribbled into a crowd and was stripped. He swished an open three in transition. He attacked off the three line and hit the runner. He got his man to travel on a defensive recovery. He missed a half-court heave at the buzzer. Second Half: He missed a wing three on a kickout. Nice challenge on his man on the other end to get a stop. He missed a wing three, not great shot selection. He pushed up a rebound and hit KCP for the transition three. He got outmuscled to give up a putback to a big. He was stripped trying to beat the shotclock. He forced a drive and was blocked out of bounds. Great job battling on the defensive glass to pull down a tough board. He then swished a catch-and-shoot three straight away on the other end. He missed a three in transition way short, then fouled. Nice recovery on the other end to block a shot. He posted up a smaller man and hit the jumphook. He posted up again, spun and drew FTs, he made one but got back his miss.

Lopez -- -- He couldn’t hit from distance at a high clip, but a pretty good game from everywhere else on the court. He had some nice challenges anchoring the D, anticipating the pull-ups in the paint to challenge well. Also some nice recoveries on the perimeter. They called him for a bogus foul on one of Lillard’s drives on what looked like a good block. Great job on the glass from Brook on both ends. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-11 shooting (1-6 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 8 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks and 4 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He worked the post and hit the turnaround for the Lakers first score. Great job stealing a pass which would have been a sure layup. He missed a wing three. He missed an open wing three. He passed up a good look at a midrange jumper for a tougher fallaway. He swiped another pass. Robbed of an And-1 on an up-and-under they said was a swing through (just dumb). He swished a wing three on a kickout. He up-faked, attacked off the three line and dunked. He was fouled on the defensive glass for FTs, he made both. Second Half: He attacked and fed Julius with an interior feed for a layup. He missed a deep three trailing in transition. He drew a shove in the post and FTs as we were in the bonus, he made one. He missed a break-rhythm three. He worked the post, took contact and hit he short one. He swatted a shot from behind. He crashed the glass and tipped in a missed drive. Great recovery and rotation to challenge a jumper out of a timeout and force a miss. He blocked a pull-up in the lane on help D. He drew the help on the screen-roll and found Randle under the hoop for the layup. Wow, looked like a good block on Lillard’s drive, but they called him for a foul. He missed a wing three.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Man, thought he got robbed of some FTs late in the game. Those are huge points obviously in a game that comes down to the final possession. Lillard clearly fouled him and KCP rose up expecting the whistle, missed the tough off-balance jumper and got no foul call with 1:19 left. Big possession. Next time down, KCP would missed a layup on a drive. So a couple big possessions where we came up empty. Earlier in the half, he helped the Lakers pull out to their biggest lead of the game with a couple of threes from the wing. The Stats: He scored The Action: He missed a wing three in transition. He deflected a kickout and we got it to him for a breakaway dunk. He missed a pull-up on the baseline. He sank a pull-up 15-footer. He got stripped, tracked down his man to block his short but was called for a foul then a tech for disagreeing. He had a kickout thrown right to him off some nice D by Randle and that led to a fastbreak. He drained a wing three on a kickout. He got an illegal screen call fighting through a screen to track his man. He missed a pull-up wing jumper on the other end. Great job changing ends and IT hit him filling the lane for the layup. Second Half: He attacked off the three line and drew FTs on a pull-up, he made one. He missed a floater, but Lopez cleaned up the penetration. He swished a wing three off the elevator screens set up out of a timeout. He swished another three from the same spot a few seconds later in transition. He airballed a three next time down curling to the top of the key. He missed a baseline jumper. He was called for a travel, indecisive at the three line. Wow, no call on leaning jumper where he got hit obviously and he missed with 1:19 left. He attacked next time down and couldn’t finish a layup. Fouled before the ball was inbounded but IT missed this FT that KCP drew.

Thomas -- -- Not a good shooting night at all. That all came to lackluster conclusion in the final seconds. We had an amazing opportunity down three to take a freethrow and cut it to 2 off a foul that happened before the whistle with 7 seconds left. That was his only missed FT of the night. Painful. “I’ll make up for it,” Isaiah said. That could have allowed the Lakers a chance to win or try to tie the game with 2 instead of a three. On the subsequent inbounds, he was stripped as he rose up to take the three. “This was a tough one because we felt like we had the win,” he said. He would finish 1-9 from three. He had 9 points on 3-10 shooting in the first half, but 6 assists. In the second half, he was just 2-11 with only 1 assist. You can tell he’s not himself. There was a switch in the second half against a big where you could see Isaiah doesn’t have that explosion to shake a defender like he used to. He couldn’t take the big so he passed it off instead. Not a good hoop IQ game from him either. He got himself into bad situations and caught in the air unnecessarily. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 5-21 shooting (1-9 from three, 8-9 from the line) to go with 1 board, 7 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He missed a tough runner up against the shotclock. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He worked off the screen and hit the elbow jumper. He got a switch and swished the three from the top of the arc. Nice no-looker to Zubac trailing the break for FTs. He missed a deep three. He missed a pull-up wing jumper, looking fouled. He attacked off the screen and scooped in a layup. He missed a corner three on iso. He attacked and missed. He kicked out to KCP for a three. He missed a short jumper, we got it back to him, he attacked with speed, took contact and went down for FTs, he made both. He got into the paint, drew the D and threaded a pass through defenders to Randle for the dunk. He grabbed a board and pushed it out to KCP for the layup. Second Half: He missed a pull-up three in transition. He attacked from the corner and drew FTs on the dribble, he made both. He drew FTs on a pass-off, he made both. He missed a pull-up wing three on a two-for-one. He sank a 19-footer working off the high screen. He missed a three in transition. He weaved through the D off the screen and scored a layup. He missed a short floater in the lane that he should have finished. He attacked and missed a prayer, but Zubac cleaned up the dribble penetration. He hit Lonzo for the open three. He got caught in the air unnecessarily and threw it away. He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a wing three. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He missed a FT with 7.4 seconds left down 3 and the ball. He was then stripped on a three on the inbounds.

Wear -- -- Defensively, he had some moments again. He led the team with 3 blocks, recovering on smaller players and swatting shots from behind. He did give up an And-1 biting on a fake, but overall strong enough on that end. He sank a three and a wing jumper for his only points. We could have used another three from him tonight. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 6 boards, 3 blocks and 4 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: Good help D rotation to force a miss. He got tapped on a wing three. Then gave up an And-1 on a jumper on the other end. He drained a wing three on the swing-swing started by Isaiah’s kickout. He sank a pull-up wing jumper. He blocked Davis once, challenged him a second time and forced the miss under the hoop. Second Half: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He blocked a drive out of bounds on a recovery. Wow, weak foul on call on a block from behind. He missed a wing three.

Zubac -- -- He had a couple of nice plays on the offensive glass for scores. Good to see him impose that size. Defensively, he wasn’t as effective as the last game. The Stats: He had 7 points on 2-3 shooting (3-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He bricked a baseline jumper. He drew FTs trailing the break when IT hit him with a no-looker, he made both. He knocked an offensive board away, grabbed it and dunked. Second Half: Nice challenge in the paint to get a stop. He fumbled away a bounce pass in the paint. He cleaned up a dribble penetration miss with a putback And-1, he made the FT.

Ennis -- -- He got crossed over badly in the first half and fell down. The Stats: He had 2 assists in 6 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: Swing pass to Lonzo for a three. He got crossed over and fell down. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- This was going to be a tough one to win without both Hart and BI, whom we’ve used to defend the Blazer guards… Lonzo picked up a couple fouls midway through the quarter. The Lakers down 5, shooting just 3-14. They brought in IT for him… Refs giving the Blazers all the calls early on. KCP picked up a tech… Lakers down 6 when Zubac came in for Lopez… Ennis in for Kuzma, Wear in for Randle, Lakers down 8… They trimmed a once 11-point lead down to 3… The Lakers trailed 27-24 after the first quarter… He started a Zubac, Wear, Ball, Ennis, IT lineup… Ennis out for Kuzma, Lakers down 11… They trailed by 14 when the timeout came with 7:31. Randle in for Zubac, KCP in for IT… They cut it to 6 to force a timeout… Lonzo out with three fouls, Wear out for Lopez, Lakers down 8… He sat Lopez for Wear with 2 minutes left, Lakers down 1… The Lakers trailed 58-55 at the half… Lakers were in the bonus at the 8:51 mark. This was huge as we shot a ton of FTs in the third… A 7-0 run to start the half and the Lakers led by 4… Up 6, he called a timeout with a possession looking flakey. He set up the elevator screens for KCP for a three to lead by 9… Up 12, they brought in IT for Kuzma… Up 11, he went with Zubac, Wear, Kuzma, Ball and IT… Ennis in for the final possession of the quarter… The Lakers won the quarter 25-15… The Lakers led 80-73 heading into the fourth… He started a Zubac, Wear, Kuzma, KCP, IT lineup… Up 4, he brought back in Lonzo for Wear… They pushed it back up to 10 and forced a timeout… He sat Zubac and Kuzma for Lopez and Randle up 7 with 6 minutes to go… The Blazers went on a run to erase an 11-point lead over a 2-minute stretch and Luke called a timeout with 3:37 left... He sat IT for Kuzma out of that. A little late with that. Not that IT was at fault here Lillard was lighting us up… He sat Lopez for IT for an offensive possession down 3 with 1:16 left… Some bad rebounding by the Lakers after getting stops and we eventually had to take a foul… Down 3 with 7 seconds left, the Blazers switched everything to disrupt our play. We got lucky to get the ball in but IT was stripped on the three attempt. Ball game…

Thanks, DB! Great recap.

The minute-and-a-half sequence in the middle of the fourth
IT miss, Lopez foul, Randle turnover, Randle steal (yes!), Lopez miss, IT miss, Lonzo miss. No rebounds for the Lakers.
Meanwhile, Blazers go on 11-0 run without a single miss and take the lead.
That's it.

P.S.
Oh, and if Randle really hit 7-8 from three we'd be celebrating a win instead

7 more FT's than us, they must just be more "aggressive" than us.
I recall the game in Portland earlier this season being the same and the game being close till the end.
Lillard must get the MJ treatment for all those titles he's won.

Learning the value of every possession and every rebound at the end of games.

Interesting that they kept going to Kuzma with the mismatch without trying to go back to Randle, especially when he was very effective

Lillard is their closer. IT tried

Hopefully this list will make the players MAD and making them have a rout in their next game against the Magic

Thanks for the great work DB

Thanks DB. 15-game losing streak to the Blazers. Sigh.
This is one of those teams. I remember back in the Kobe/Pau days when we ALWAYS lost to the Bobcats.

They really missed BI and Hart but it was still a strong showing by an undermanned team.

Thanks DB. Infuriating. On one hand, I thought we were too short handed to be in this game in the first place. We really could use BI and Hart dammit. On the other hand, this was yet another very winnable game against Portland, yet they walk away for yet another season with their steenking win streak intact.

Should be encouraging, getting past all the anger about how that game unfolded, that the Lakers can be down this bad with the 3 position in their roster and be missing the team's top scorer, and still push the Blazers into circus shot territory in order to eke out a win against us.

Thanks again for a great write up DB! On to the next game.

Thanks DB! The loss is understandable and now I understand why Kobe was hated so much. Just. Won't. Miss. A. Stinkin. Shot. In. Clutch. Time.

Frustrating loss, but it shows how far the team has come.

When we add this summer, I want to sweep these fools next season. They won’t get much better than this. Have fun being a 2nd round exit team, Portland.

Thanks DB.

This was a good loss. We were undermanned and without arguably our best player (BI) and a key bench contributor (Hart). We were up on the 3rd best team in the WC by 10 points and just couldn't close the deal.

Our young guns are being tried by fire and gaining a tremendous amount of experience. They're getting battle tested.

I guarantee you LBJ and PG13 watched this game thinking what they could would be the difference and they can win with us.

Sure, it's a bummer to lose, but we are putting out one hell of a resume for free agents to consider us as a destination. This is unlike the last 3-4 years. And now we have great young assets on rookie contract (except JR) and a ton of cap space to work with. We're in a great situation.

Certainly a winnable game. Even though we've lost 15 straight to Portland, every game this year has been down-to-the-wire close.

Considering that P-land is 3rd in the West, and the difference between us and them is a stud like Lillard, imagine us with one or two studs...
