Quote:
In 2005, then-NBA commissioner David Stern celebrated a victory when he successfully created an age limit -- a player had to be 19 years old or one year removed from his high school class graduation to be drafted -- that accomplished his goal of removing pro scouts from high school gyms.

Now, though, there is turbulence, as the underbelly in the youth and college basketball systems is being exposed. The NBA has watched it unfold. Seeing both a responsibility as the world's leading basketball league and an opportunity to move in on valuable territory, the league is preparing to get involved again with elite high school basketball players, multiple sources told ESPN.

This is great news! I hope this puts an end to the ridiculously racist one-and-done rule once and for all. Making preventive measures from athletes making money, conveniently in a African-American dominated sport should have gotten that dictator David Stern impeached.

The least the NBA can do at this stage of the process is grant the HS prospects being able to be drafted to the organization’s G-League team for one year, then they can move up next season. Gets these kids real professional experience and making some money while also making the G-League matter much more.

In the long run, it will be great for college basketball too. New players will always from the crop in that level regardless if every elite HS Prospect decided to go pro. It happened before the racist rule change, and it will happened after this hopefully gets changed again.

that'd be awesome if HS kids could get drafted by a pro club when they graduate, develop on the G league team, and then move up when ready

My concern is giving a high school kid access to large amounts of money. They most likely have no idea of what to do with or how to manage great amounts of cash.

There should be caveats. Some way to secure or make roads to a end. Maybe make a portion of his/her salary untouchable until a certain age. Sorta like a trust fund. Some sort of monitored entity closely watched so kids don't get ripped off.

I figured there was already some formal or informal financial education thing in place. I haven't really heard any of these stories about kids who flamed out of the league blowing through their millions recently.

I think the trust fund thing would be challenged in court and easily overturned. You can neither stop someone from making a living, nor keep them from their earnings. Maybe a deferred payment scheme? But again, for every marginal guy that might help, your Kobe and Lebron types aren't going to go for that. You have to just put in the appropriate financial education and hope team cultures and veterans put enough peer pressure on young guys to stop them from doing anything stupid.

Yup. You can provide education and counselling, which all the sports leagues do. But ultimately, the NBA can't dictate what players do with their salary anymore than any other employer can.

How is it different than giving the kid access to even more money a year later?

So many questions on how this is going to be setup and whether these phenoms will actually benefit financially in the long run. Under the current one-and-done system, the player gives away his talent to the college for room and board and national exposure to increase his draft stock. The real deals only do this for a year then get drafted in the first round and make millions.

Under the new system, will they get drafted into the G-League like every other player who wasn't assigned by an NBA club and make G-League salaries? Then they'll play for a year or two and then apply for the NBA draft?

Will be it be like MLB where the players get drafted out of high school by a pro club and then use the G-League as a farm system? If so, does the player get paid under current rookie scale while playing in the G-League or will there be a new kind of contract and who determines whether the kid is ready to be moved up?

Do you think the guys who play 7 months of college basketball know how manage great amounts of cash? I didn't hear this concern from people when Jordan Speith was earning millions at 19.

This speaks to SAS's approach, racism. Speith is a once in a while wonder. Basketball produces pro ready athletes by the dozens a majority of which are people of color.

It's 100% racist. Some female golfers are making bank before they graduate high school...likewise with women's tennis. Anytime it involves basketball or football and making $ at a young age and you'll hear all kinds of excuses on why they shouldn't.

ATLANTA — McDonald’s All American and Syracuse commit Darius Bazley — a projected top-10 selection in the 2019 NBA draft — has decided to turn professional and plans to sign in the NBA G League, Bazley told Yahoo Sports.

Bazley, 17, told Yahoo Sports he has decommitted from Syracuse and will play in the G League after discussing several options with his mother, Lynnita Bazley, close family members and Princeton (Cincinnati) High School coach Steve Wright. Several players have set a trend of leaving collegiate commitments to play overseas, but Bazley’s decision to bypass the one-and-done format for the G League is unprecedented

nobody has made the joke that he would have made more money @ Syracuse yet? I think this is a solid alternative for prospects that prefer not to attend college as long as the NBA keeps their 1 year rule.
