UConn Fires Men's Basketball Coach Kevin Ollie

Kevin Ollie's time as UConn men's basketball coach is finished.

The school announced Saturday morning it was "initiating procedure to terminate" Ollie's employment for "just cause," which would mean he would not have to be paid the roughly $10 million remaining on his contract. It could, however, be the starting point of negotiations for a buyout.

UConn finished 14-18, with a loss to SMU in the first round of the AAC tournament. The Huskies were 16-17 last season.

The "just cause" would come from a pending NCAA inquiry into the program which, multiple sources have confirmed to The Courant, includes improper workouts.

"The men’s basketball program has a proud history and a tradition of excellence," UConn president Susan Herbst said, in the school's statement. "Our goal, above all, is to ensure we have a program that UConn Nation can be proud of, including our students, alumni, fans, and all our committed supporters.”

AD David Benedict said: "It is unfortunate that this decision became necessary. As with all of our programs, we hold men’s basketball to the highest standards. We will begin a national search immediately to identify our next head coach.”

I remember a lot of Laker fans clamoring for his hiring and were disappointed when he decided to stay in the college ranks. Personally, I never got the fuss about him.

In fairness, he rejected the entire nba to stay where he was, and I respect a man knowing where he wants to be. But he was a serious case of hype, and it turns out he didn’t have the goods, or so it seems.

Couldn't adapt past the ISO. Couldn't recruit. Can't do that in the college ranks.

Yes, but he's turned out to be a one-hit wonder. With the tourney, making it past Elite 8 is pretty much up to serendipity.

I mean he's coached his team to a title. One hit wonder or not, not many coaches can say they've done that.

It looks like it helped to have the cupboard stocked by the previous regime.

I’ve lost interest a bit in UCONN b-ball since it took a downturn.

The word on the street was that he refused to cheat and do the Calipari/Pitino sleazeball moves and was too clean and didn’t get the top flight guys uconn was accustomed to getting. Still thankful for that chip he got us.

If that's the case I honestly hope he puts that out there for the public to see.

Kevin Ollie Threatens Lawsuit Against UConn, Demands Retraction For Release Of 'Confidential' Transcripts

Kevin Ollie’s lawyers are demanding UConn make a retraction regarding documents released last week, and are threatening to sue for defamation and invasion of privacy.

In a letter to UConn President Susan Herbst, Ollie’s lawyers asserted that in releasing transcripts of interviews relating to an ongoing NCAA investigation, the school violated Freedom of Information Act laws that protected him from false claims. The documents included a transcript of an interview in which former associate head coach Glen Miller indicated Ollie arranged for $30,000 to be delivered to the mother of a player in order for her to relocate to Connecticut.

The charge was not substantiated elsewhere in the 1,355 pages of documents released, and was not included in the school’s reasons for terminating Ollie’s employment on March 10 for “just cause.” Ollie is owed more than $10 million under the terms of his contract, but in claiming just cause for termination, UConn is trying to avoid paying it.

Here Are All The Answers To Your Kevin Ollie-UConn Questions
The dispute is headed to arbitration, since Herbst upheld the decision to terminate for just cause on June 19.

“[UConn] widely published defamatory information concerning coach Kevin Ollie,” read the letter from Ollie’s lawyers, Madsen, Prestley and Parenteau, to Herbst, “when it provided un-redacted copies of confidential NCAA interview transcripts to news reporters pursuant to a Freedom of Information Act request. One of the … transcripts contained [Miller’s] false claim. … The false and defamatory claim was released without prior notice to coach Ollie and no attempt was made by the University of Connecticut to protect Coach Ollie from this false and defamatory claim, or to disavow it.”

UConn spokesperson Stephanie Reitz issued a statement regarding the latest claim:

“UConn released the documents in direct response to a Freedom of Information request by Mr. Ollie’s own attorneys,” Reitz said. “Other parties, including the media, also requested and received these same documents as required by Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) in Connecticut. The FOIA, which governs public agencies such as the University, does not permit the selective release of public records to certain parties while denying those same records to others.”

Documents: A Look At What Led To Kevin Ollie's Firing »

In his interview, Miller said his wife became friends with the mother of the player and learned about the alleged $30,000 from her.

Ollie’s lawyers requested information relating to the school’s decision to terminate his employment and media outlets, including The Courant, also asked for the documents that were released.

The documents released by UConn included a letter from athletic director David Benedict to Ollie, which detailed the school’s “just cause” case for firing Ollie. Three NCAA violations were investigated and self-reported by UConn — Ollie’s shooting baskets with recruit James Akinjo on an official visit, facilitating a call from Ray Allen to another recruit and, potentially most serious, arranging for player workouts with an outside trainer, Derrek Hamilton, on campus and in Atlanta, without the players paying. In upholding Benedict, Herbst wrote to Ollie that these infractions were enough to terminate for just cause and the school “need not wait for the NCAA” to complete its investigation.

The NCAA has been conducting its own investigation into UConn’s recruiting practices during Ollie’s time since last fall. Miller was let go by Ollie in March 2017, immediately after the season. The case remains open.

On Nov. 16, Miller, granted limited immunity by the NCAA, was interviewed for several hours in New London and it was then he revealed what he had learned from his wife, Yvonne, to school and NCAA investigators. The NCAA has not yet released findings or documents relating to the investigation, nor sanctioned the UConn men’s basketball program.

“[UConn] did not cite this false and defamatory claim as a reason to terminate Coach Ollie’s employment, which is a further indication that the claim was unreliable and unsubstantiated,” Ollie’s lawyers wrote. “… Furthermore, UConn had been informed that … the mother of the student athlete denied receiving anything of value from Coach Ollie. Nevertheless, UConn acted with reckless disregard for the truth.”

Ollie’s lawyers further asserted that the allegation was reported all over the world. “What is most disturbing is the evidence demonstrating that UConn intended to cause harm to Coach Ollie,” the letter continued. It demanded UConn issue a retraction as required by Connecticut General Statutes 52-237 “in as public a manner as that in which it was made.”
