I can’t emphatically answer your question, but I do know that if they did agree to a sign and trade, it’d be rather costly for both teams, especially Cleveland as they are over the cap in luxury tax land.

The Lakers need to make a decision on Zubac by June 30, and Bryant & Ennis by July 5, otherwise their salaries guarantee. Let's assume they try to maximize cap space and let all of them go. They're left with:
Code:
Lonzo $7,461,960 (est. baseline scale amount)
Deng $18,000,000
Hart $1,394,520 (est. baseline scale amount)
Ingram $5,757,120 (est. baseline scale amount)
Kuzma $1,689,840 (est. baseline scale amount)
2018 #25 $1,385,000 (est. position & baseline scale amount)
Holds $5,140,000 (est. empty roster charges)
This adds up to $40,828,440. With a $101M estimated cap, that leaves $60,171,560 in cap room. The 10+ year max (eg: Bron) will be $35,350,000, and the 7-9 year max (eg: PG) will be $30,300,000. Signing both would take about $4.622 million more than they have. And in the process they'd have to lose Brewer, KCP, Ennis, Frye, Lopez, Randle, IT and Zu (and still not have enough).
If they do a straight waive & stretch of Deng they'd gain another $11.495M in cap room. That brings their room to about $69.95M -- enough to sign both players with about $5.3M left to spare. That's not enough to hang onto Randle or any of their other FAs's Bird rights -- their cap holds are all larger than that amount, but they could keep two of Zu, Ennis and Bryant, or use the cap room to chase someone else.
Note that the only way to keep Randle would be to find a trade for Luol, get creative with an extend-and-stretch scenario, or find a suitable sign-and-trade for Bron or PG. |
If Lebron seriously wants to come to LA with PG, I can see him taking about 30 million so the team can retain Randle. If I remember correctly, he took less in Miami in order to get the Big Three together. |
Do you think Cleveland/OKC would be willing to do a sign and trade if they know they're going to lose Lebron/PG13 regardless. That might be a possibility where both sides mutually benefit.
Also have the sign and trade rules changed for teams over the salary cap, I'm really outdated in that regard. |
OKC would definitely do a sign and trade. They already lost KD for nothing, there's no way they'd pass on the chance to get something for PG.
In that scenario I imagine the Lakers would have to give up Kuz, Byrant or Zubac, and all their available draft picks. | LOL, why would the Lakers need to do that? If Lebron is coming, he wants as much talent on the team as possible to give him a shot at another title. He has taken less money before and if he just take 29-30 mil instead of 35, the number works. 5 mil is chump change for Lebron. |
Only he didn’t, Miami worked out a S&T with Cleveland. And Lebron has vocally supported every player getting a max and said that it is a crime they couldn’t get more. So if you think that Lebron is a hypocrite then you could be correct. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

I agree when you look at Randle, PG and LeBron that is 3 of the best defensive players in the league. Add in a Hart or BI and/or Ball and you are talking some serious defensive talent. I think this is an underrated aspect when considering who we may have playing for us next year. |

With LeBron and the 2018 first from Brooklyn, Cleveland will be close to $140 million in salary which will be over $10 million more than the apron.
92. Can a free agent be signed and immediately traded?

What you proposed is a swap of Deng & Randle for LeBron with roughly an equal amount of salary going in and out for Clevealnd.
Please explain how Cleveland is going to be in compliance with the CBA and be able to complete that trade. |

If there is a minimum salary charge for each unfilled roster spot under 12, then it should be 5 minimum salary charges at $831,312 each.
$831,312 * 5 (unfilled roster spots) = $4,156,560

That looks right to me. If you add Zu and Bryant you swap the two cap holds ($1.67 million) for their salaries ($2.9 million) which puts you at about $103 million. The league wrote down the projected cap from $103m Feb 2017 to $101m in September 2017. Since then several more teams have closed on patch deals and I expect a longer (higher grossing) playoffs this season. I expect the cap to be higher than $101m. _________________ Austin Reaves keeps his game tight, like Kobe Bryant on game night. |

Trail Blazers Waive and Stretch Andrew Nicholson
Quote: |
The Portland Trail Blazers have waived Andrew Nicholson and stretched his contract, the team announced via press release today. Nicholson had previously been acquired from the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Allen Crabbe.
Nicholson’s original contract called for the Blazers to pay him $19.9 million over the next three seasons; per the stretch provision Portland will now spread that salary out evenly across the next seven years, paying Nicholson $2.84 million annually until 2024.
Waiving and stretching Nicholson’s contract will trim about $3.52 million from the team’s salary for this season and lower the total payroll to about $122.2 million. Portland will still be luxury tax payers, however, if nothing else changes — they are almost exactly $3 million over the $119.3 million tax threshold.

Probably doesn't attempt too many because he's too efficient in the box. |

He'll always have to play with a stretch 5 like Brook in order to be effective. |

His mid range has looked pretty good but Luke wants him in the paint _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

Another strong game from Jrock. He's having a nice little second half half to the season. _________________ Music is my medicine |

Don't understand how this can't be stressed enough.
Luke DOES NOT want him shooting from mid very often or from three very often. He wants Julius to remain in the paint, and he shoots 59% from there at 20 ppg so he's pretty darn efficient.
You talk about the mid range so much, the kid's been averaging 20 ppg on 59% shooting. He's our most efficient scorer right now, so ya'll shouldn't worry about what he isn't, doing as opposed to how efficiently he's scoring.
Anyway, when Luke gave him the green light to fire from three last year in the Phoenix game, we saw it. This season Luke has made it a point that he doesn't want Randle shooting very much unless absolutely necessary as the most open opportunity, and even then, rarely. _________________ How NBA 2K18 failed the All-Time Lakers:

Yet he developed a lot of skills meanwhile: elite finisher at the rim, great defense, court vision,... I believe he can be a decent mid-range shooter; his shoot is not that bad. _________________ .... |

Brook has been a godsend for Jules b/c he can play "center" on offense without having an advanced mid/3 point game.
It's absolutely imperative to have a stretch big next to Jules IMO. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

He needs to start kicking the ball out when the defense collapses on him. He’s been a great scorer for us but he becomes a black hole at times. He could get his teammates a lot of wide open shots when he gets double and triple teamed in the paint. |

He's been doing just that for the past several games. Kuzma even praised him for it in a post game interview a couple games back. |

Yes, according to Luke that is something that the coaching staff has been working with him on doing. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

I disagree. He had a stretch where he was but lately it hasn’t been the case IMO. He’s definitely improved but he still has times where he forces up out of control shots with open teammates especially recently. |
