Points in the Paint… The score was 44-40 after the first quarter -- a season high for the Lakers and the most post the Pelicans have given up to open a game. On the one hand, the Lakers were flying (KCP with five threes in the quarter). On the other, when the Lakers look bad on D to start a game, they often look that way all night.

Pelicans had a very rare third game in three nights after rescheduling. Maybe the Lakers plan was to rope-a-dope early on, let them get tired throwing punches. It’s hard to get tired when you’re scoring layups, though. The guards were soft, the big anchoring the paint had little presence and the weakside D was taking it easy.

The Pelicans were getting into the paint again and again for easy scores with 46 points in the paint in a 73-71 first half.

With a strong finish to the third quarter, however, the Lakers led by 11 going into the fourth. They gave up a 5-0 run to start the quarter – an And-1 layup and a dunk – and Luke quickly called at timeout. Another layup and more FTs at the rim out of that. The Lakers could not keep the Pelicans out of the paint and were quickly caught.

Julius Randle scored with 3:30 left to put the Lakers up by 4. The Pelicans called timeout, then a second timeout out of that, regrouped and the Lakers didn’t score again. They left Lonzo open, took everything else away, and Lonzo missed and missed and missed. The Lakers lost 128-125.

“The game wasn’t lost there,” Luke said of the last 3+ minutes of scoreless Ball. He mentioned the 80 points we gave up in the paint. A ridiculous number.

Randle -- -- “We just got to protect the paint,” Randle said afterward. There was a play in the first quarter where Randle saved a dunk attempt with a rejection from behind on help D. He then took the ball up court, crossed over a guard at full speed, went around another defender and dunked with both hands. Freaking brilliant ball in that stretch. Might have been the only defense we played a the rim all night. “It shows what I keep telling him, he could be one of the best players in this league,” Luke said. He said the sky is limit for Randle. “We just gave up way too many points in the paint,” Randle said. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 9-16 shooting (5-8 from the line) to 10 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He was blocked on a forced turnaround on the first possession. He fired a pass to KCP for a three. He posted up and hit the jumphook cross the lane. He attacked and overpowered his man for a layup again next time down. He swatted a man from behind, grabbed control of it pushed it out and slammed. He couldn’t power in a layup over a man. He hit a short one over his man in the middle of the paint. He kicked out to Kuzma for a three. He attacked middle, a man went flying as Randle stopped, he then drew FTs over Davis, he made one. Bogus foul on a denial of a lob attempt. Then another foul next time down on a lob. He crashed the glass in transition and drew FTs on IT’s missed drive, he made both. He faked a cut and IT threw it where he thought he was going. He picked up his third foul trying to get post position (refs missed the first foul). Second Half: He biffed a layup after a great change of pace to step around a defender carefully in transition. He drew FTs on the screen-roll, he missed both, got it back and was stripped, layup the other way (4-point switch). He sank a fade in the paint. He didn’t use glass in the post and missed badly. He faced up on the right side, changed directions, bumped the defender and scored the layup. Nice help to force a turnover in the paint. His pass was picked off. He attacked across the middle and muscled in a layup. He drew FTs in transition, he made both. He spun baseline and couldn’t slip in a layup from behind the backboard. We gave up a lob dunk (why switch on Rondo on the perimeter?). He tipped in a missed layup by IT. Poor D again on the other end to give up a score. He dropped a man on a screen to free up Lopez for three. Quick attack off a repost and he scored a layup. Attacked down the lane to his left and missed the drive.

Ball -- -- The Pelicans could leave Lonzo open without paying a price. This comes into play when you need to tag a roll man, help off screens to prevent guys like KCP getting freed up or to double the post. It’s hard to talk about offense in this game, but Lonzo down the stretch killed them. We didn’t score in the final 3:30. So, yes, you can legitimately criticize the offense despite what Luke was saying. Meanwhile, we left Rondo and he hit a big three late in the game. What does Lonzo do right after that? He shoots and misses a three on the other end with 14 on the shotclock. You are stone cold. Why are you taking that? The one he almost had to take was with a minute left was when Lopez drew a double team in the post, kicked it to Lonzo with no one within 15 feet of him and he missed the huge three. There was room to even move in if he wanted. Down 1, they left him again and he missed another wide open three with 15 seconds left. One last play you can also tie to Lonzo’s inability to be a threat from three – we brought him back in after a timeout to inbound the ball with 4.6 left down three. After he inbounded the ball. Davis, who was guarding him on the inbounds, left him alone to go swipe a pass from KCP to Lopez. No need to cover him and it’s 5 on 4 again. “I want him taking it. I want a point guard with the courage to step up and take those even after missing a few,” Luke said. On the bright side, some of this shooting is so embarrassingly bad sometimes (in volume of misses in one outing) that I think he works his ass off this summer on his perimeter shooting and freethrows. You can’t have as many games like this and not feel the heat. As bad as all that was, he also nearly had a triple-double in this game. “We’re very confident that as he grows and continues to mature in this league he’s going to be a consistent knock down shooter,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-15 shooting (1-12 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 13 boards, 9 assists, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 44 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He missed a pull-up 17-footer. He was fouled on a give-and-go (should have tried to dunk it), he made one. He sank a step-back wing three. He missed a pull-up at half court. He missed a wide open wing three. He hit Wear for a corner three. He was blocked on a dunk attempt. He missed a step-back three in early offense. He sank a pull-up at the FT line. Horrible post entry pass, telegraphing it, turnover. Second Half: He blocked a shot from behind a big. He pushed a ball up and was picked as he tried to attack, FTs the other way. He missed a wing three. He missed a wing three. He hit Lopez in stride over the D for a dunk in transition. He attacked and threw it away for an And-1 the other way. He missed a step-back three, uggh. He kicked out to KCP for a three. After getting fouled on the defensive glass battle with no call, he pushed it out and hit Randle for FTs. Left wide open on D so they could tag a roll man and Lonzo missed the open three. Another missed open three.

Lopez -- -- Defensively, he was just letting guys score right around him with ease. No paint presence at all. You certainly need others rotating behind you and helping, but when Lopez had that duty he played way too small defensively. Offensively, he could easily score in the paint in this game. It got harder as they sagged off Lonzo to double and not pay a price. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 9-12 shooting (1-2 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He was stripped as he rolled to the hoop. He attacked left and hit the running bank. Easy jumphook in the paint. He easily ate up Mirotic in the post for FTs, he made one. He lost AD in the post, drop-stepped and dunked. He overpowered a couple men in the post and scored (should have been an And-1). He missed a wing three on a kickout. Second Half: He hit a jumphook in the post. He split a double in the post and hit the And-1 turnaround, he made the FT. He threw a kickout away. He missed a layup and follow tip attempt. He drew FT in transition next time down, he made both. He kicked out to Kuzma for FTs. He attacked middle, drop-stepped and hit the over Davis. Great job changing ends and Lonzo found him for the dunk. He sank a wing three off a screen.

Kuzma -- -- His three ball was looking good. He first got going, though, by getting in the post for a score and earning some FTs. Great job getting to the line tonight 9 times and making all but one. He had 14 points on 3-5 shooting in the first half. Very efficient offensive game early on. He got a little more loose with the shot selection in the second half, however. He mentioned after the game that they have to defend the pick and roll better. He needs to be careful not leaving the roller too early without tagging and slowing him up. It happens with a little too much consistency. Still, another positive seeing him string together some big offensive games like this in his rookie year. Hope the minutes don’t get to him. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 5-11 shooting (4-6 from three, 8-9 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 43 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He threw a pass out of bounds (Lopez kind of stopped on that roll). Quick FTs on the counter attack after a made basket, he made both. He posted up and scored easily over the smaller man. He attacked and was blocked out of bounds. He missed a jumphook in the post. He didn’t tag a roll man and gave up a dunk (need to commit more on that). He sank a wing three on a kickout. He drew FTs rolling to the hoop, he made both. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He was undercut on a three for FTs, he made two. Second Half: He missed a turnaround at the elbow. He slapped away a pass in the paint to get a stop. He swished a tough step-back three straight away. He sank a corner three on a kickout. More FTs getting contact on the perimeter, he made both. He missed a tough fallaway trying to create with the shotclock low. He missed a three from the top of the arc. He missed a deep three out of a timeout, not a good look. Rondo blew past him for a layup.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He came out on fire with five threes in the first quarter. He made 8-11 on the night as we would piss away a 28-point game from KCP. Things were a bit harder for him as the game went along. Just watch how he comes off some of the screens and where Lonzo’s man is helping to crowd him. Defensively, he had a big tie-up with 35 seconds that would help us get a stop. Prior to that…which is most of the game…it was pretty weak effort on that end.The Stats: He scored The Action: He couldn’t finish a layup attempt. We got it back to him and he hit a three. He swished another one next time down on the kickout by Randle. They left him alone in transition next time down and he swished the deep three after picking up his dribble. He missed a layup on a drive. He swished a three set up for him out of a timeout. He spotted Zubac open under the hoop for a dunk. He swished his fifth three in the first quarter, pulling up in transition. He missed a three in transition late in the second half. Second Half: He swished a long wing jumper. He pulled up and rattled in a three in transition next time down. He drew FTs on the defensive glass, he made both. He gave it up, got it back and sank another three. He missed a tough three at the buzzer. He swished a wing three on a kickout. He missed a three trailing the break. He curled off the screen and missed a jumper from the top of the key out of a timeout. Great D to get a tie up on the perimeter with 35 seconds left with 4.3 on the shotclock (we would get a shotclock violation). He got double-teamed on an inbounds and threw it away.

Thomas -- -- Didn’t really like this game from IT. He definitely had some nice plays where he took advantages of switches to get in the paint for scores and even scored a layup on AD after getting contact on him. Good moments there, but he played a very weak fourth quarter. They went at him a little bit on the defensive end. There was just a lack of chemistry on both ends. That’s probably reflected best in the 2 assists with 6 turnovers. It’s hard to get stops when you have a team beating us down court in transition of turnovers. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-12 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 6 turnovers and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He kicked out to Wear for a three. He got trapped off a screen and his pass was swiped. He attacked the paint and hit the hook next time down. Another pass deflected, turnover. He attacked the paint, took a nice angle to cut off a big, take contact and go down for FTs, he made both. He got a big switching on him, he broke him down and scored the layup. He lost a dribble off a foot. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He missed a three. Wow, he rocked Davis back on a drive, initiating a little contact and then scoring the layup over him. He hit Kuzma rolling to the hoop for FTs. Quick attack in transition, he missed but Julius drew FTs off it. He attacked baseline and hit Kuzma weakside for a three. Great read to take a charge on Rondo on a switch off from the post. He attacked a big and scored the layup over him. He lost the handle as he rose up and was wondering why there was no call. He picked up a tech for complaining about the Pelicans touching the ball after a made basket. He picked up his dribble with the clock low, then threw it to Wear who threw it away with a second left, uggh (looked like was irked with Wear, too, on that). Second Half: He missed a pull-up three. He weaved through the D and hit the elbow pull-up. He sank a three straight away. Off the mark on a pass off the screen and it resulted in a three the other way. He missed runner. He missed layup but Randle tipped it in.

Wear -- -- We got a couple good looks for him from three that he knocked down for his points. Defensively, I have very few notes of good plays in this game, but he actually had a couple of those. Love that he’s not shying away from anything like you see some G-Leaguers. He’s playing his game. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-5 shooting (2-4 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: Nice help D to force a turnover on one end, then he hit a three on the other on a kickout. He stripped his man for a stop. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He swished a corner three with a couple defenders running at him. Second Half: He got tapped on a wing three that rattled out. He missed a baseline jumper.

Zubac -- -- Very limited action for Zubac tonight. We were a -7 in his first half minutes. Luke shortened the rotation in the second half, leaving Zubac out of the mix. He would score when the D didn’t match up and KCP found him for a dunk. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with no other stats in 5 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: Wide open under the hoop and KCP found him for the dunk. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Walton -- -- Lakers guards getting torched defensively to start the game. They trailed 21-19 after 6 minutes when the timeout came. Just too easy to score on us. Never a good sign for this team early on… They set up KCP for a three out of a timeout (his fourth already)... Luke called a timeout after Lopez let another guy go around him for a layup. He sat him and Lonzo for IT and Wear, score tied… Lonzo back in for Kuzma with 2 minutes left, Lakers up 2. Zubac in for Randle… The Lakers led 44-40 after the first. Crazy… He started the Zubac, Wear, Kuzma, Lonzo, IT lineup… Luke called a timeout as we fell back by 5 with more of the non-existent defense… Randle in for Zubac out of that. KCP in for Wear… Lopez in for Randle, Lakers up 2 with 4 minutes left… Randle in for IT down 1… Wear in for Randle who picked up his third. Then Lonzo picked up his third a few seconds later… Luke left Lonzo in there. IT in for Lonzo with 13 seconds left… The Lakers led 73-71 at the half… More back-and forth scoring in the third… IT in for Lonzo as the first sub… The Lakers pushed to an 8-point lead, but gave up a couple of scores and Luke called a timeout with 2:37 left… He sat Kuzma for Lonzo… Randle out for Wear, Lakers up 6… Strong finish and the Lakers led 108-97 heading into the fourth… He started a Lopez, Wear, Kuzma, Ball, IT lineup… A 5-0 run and Luke called a timeout, losing momentum. Again, we’re giving up scores at the rim… Randle in for Lopez up 2… Luke called another timeout on a dunk, Lakers up 1… Down 1 with 30 seconds left, we got a stop. Lonzo again with another miss... With 10 seconds left, we were slow to foul and got the ball back with 4.6 seconds left down 3. Timeout. Why even bring Lonzo back on offense in this situation? Sure enough, they left Lonzo after he inbounded and stole the ball. Ball game…

Amazing that a team coming off 2 straight games playing in there 3rd straight game... have enough energy to put up that many points in the paint and end up with 128 ...

It feels like we're going to.stumble into the season ender off another losing streak.

Whatever mojo we've had has seemingly disappeared.
Injuries and fatigue perhaps, but these guys look like they're looking ahead to the break.

Once again a young team thought that the game is going to be handed to them on the plate. Can't expect any gimmies in the NBA. But the Lakers are too young and still have not learned to concentrate every single night. On D, I mean. That's now the point in time when Nance with his attitude would have helped.

Thanks, DB, for a great recap!

Thanks DB. Great write up as always. Hard to watch the Lakers play makeshift rotations night after night. The D was atrocious. Even with the string of consecutive games N.O. played, this game never was an easy win.

Thanks for this analysis. Lonzo has to improve this offseason offensively and it has to be a striking difference. Teams are leaving him wide open and he needs to make them pay for that, and you do that by hitting daggers in a close game consistently. I would have liked seeing Kuzma get the last shot because I think he could have knocked it down. Lopez down low needed to be another option, no idea why he was roaming around the 3 point line. Frustrating to watch the ball get thrown away like that and to have let 5 seconds get wasted without fouling.

There are at least two games prior to this that the Lakers have lost by a close margin in the last minute of the game. It’s like snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory.

Hopefully Ball will review how great 3pt shooters such as Curry, Harden, Klay, Durant, IT, Lebron and others play. These players have a full array of shots that allows him to be threat in many ways (3pt, teardrops, layups, dunks, midrange, etc) and not predictable

Strange that he was shooting above 50% in the first 7-8 games after he returned to the court and now shooting around 20%

Great job DB!

Thanks DB

Positives: Randle keeps on putting out night after night
Kuzma is becoming consistently good
KCP is back on track after being MIA

Negatives: Our Defense has been terrible
Ball can't shoot but keeps shooting. Lots of bad decisions

Game analysis, Ingram would have won us this game.
I only got to see the last 3 minutes. I hated every single shot everyone took. Also leaving Rondo when the shot clock is low is not good, should have made him dribble.
Then there's Lonzo jacking up 3s before looking to the rest of the offense. Also why was he walking it up at such a slow pace?

Thanks DB for your analysis again. At least this loss wasn't as bad as the one in Orlando.

I absolutely hated Zo's step back 3 early in the shot clock. The others I have no problem with. The kid was wide open, the paint was packed, so he had to take them. A couple of weeks ago, same situation in SA, but Zo made those 3s.

Tough game to lose, but this is learning time, not necessarily winning time.

No, that's definitely wrong...although, I think I would have rather had Randle taking some of those threes than Lonzo.

Fixed it. I'm flying trying to crank out around 3300+ words a game (...a couple novels worth of text year) so there's definitely going to be the frequent typo.

Yeah, that was one I stopped and backed up to see exactly how much time was on the shotclock so I could note it.

Frankly...am not so disappointed with the result. At this point I believe the Lakers are in good shape. With the cap available for one or two franchise players, we are ready to make the real noice next seasons.

Give this set of players to 2006 Kobe... oh my...
