Steven Bochco, Creative Force Behind 'Hill Street Blues,' 'L.A. Law' and 'NYPD Blue,' Dies at 74

This is a tough one for me, because Steven was not just a celebrity to me. He was my favorite boss ever, but more importantly a great and valued friend to our family.

I wouldn't be where I am now in my profession, nor would my wife, if it weren't for Steven. It was a distinct pleasure to know such a wonderful man both professionally and personally.

A man who genuinely cared about the craft, but more importantly the people who worked with him.

Damn. He was one of the good ones and that's not something I say lightly.

Also don't leave out his two greatest series. Doogie and cop rock.

I loved LA Law, even though it had the unfortunate side effect of creating a boom of law school attendance. I guess some people just can't accept that TV shows are not real. People would ask me how accurate LA Law was. My standard answer was, "Not very realistic, except for all the sex." I got a lot of blank looks.

Anyway, RIP to a guy who helped bring TV programming into the modern world. Or is it vice versa?

My wife and I have been reminiscing and it reminded me of a great line that Steven had in regards to memorials. While discussing the memorial for yet another fallen colleague, someone said, "I'm getting sick of doing this. I don't want to go to one more of these", to which Steven responded, "I want to go to ALL of them". Which summed up the type of biting wit and irrelevant humor that I associate with him.

Sorry you didn't get to go to ALL of them Steven.

Very well put. Even before he was Exec Producing iconic TV, he was writing for shows that started a whole new trend in television.

Thanks bud. As Hector said, he was one of the good ones, especially OFF the screen.

Sorry to hear, DMR. NYPD Blue was an absolutely fantastic show during most of its run.

You're not wrong. I'd love to hear your comments about when it went south.

I was obsessed with both Hill Street and NYPD Blue. Some of the finest TV ever created. I can still sit down and watch both of those shows and get value from them. Sorry for the loss DMR. It's nice to hear that he was as good a person as he was a creator.
