Laying an Egg… Ugly game.

The Lakers went 6:19 seconds without any field goals in the fourth before finally getting one with 1.8 seconds left. It was live and die with Julius Randle at the line against the Kings once again. While he was manufacturing some points for the team (and not without a few key misses), the rest of the team was missing layups or turning the ball over.

The key turnover came off a KCP drive in the final minute with the score tied. The Kings took it for a dunk the other way.

The Lakers quickly inbounded, pushed it up court and tried to feed Randle under the hoop. The ball popped loose (whether on a poor seal or Randle getting his arm held) and the Lakers had another turnover. With another Kings score with 9.7 seconds left, the Lakers shot themselves in the foot for good.

They fell 84-83 to a team they really need to beat at home. The Lakers had 6 turnovers in the fourth quarter.

They didn’t have either Ball or Ingram in this game, so those injuries certainly caught up with them. Unfortunately, the opponents don’t get any easier than this to close out the season.

Randle -- -- A little first quarter foul trouble had him on the bench early. He’d then pick up a third in the second quarter, sending him back to the bench and a fourth in the third that did the same. He had 8 points on 4-6 shooting in his limited first half action. In the fourth, he was the only thing manufacturing points for the Lakers getting to the line again and again down the stretch. Unfortunately, he left a couple points at the line that they could have used (he went 9-14 from the line). Last time he played the Kings his missed FTs were a focal point. He was in on a key Lakers turnover in the final minute as he had a man sealed under the hoop in transition, the pass came and Randle couldn’t grab it. He immediately turned to the refs wondering why there wasn’t a call (might have had his left arm held). That was huge as he’s either going to score or draw more FTs to possibly tie the game. Instead, the Kings score on the other end and the Lakers are down 4. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 5-8 shooting (9-14 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 block, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: Low position, methodical drop step and he scored off the glass easily for the Lakers first points. He iso’d, attacked middle, drop stepped and hit the jumphook. He up-faked, attacked and threw an interior pace away. He changed directions off the dribble to lose a man, saw an open lane and hammered. He lost balance on a drive and was blocked. He slammed filing the lane on the break. He missed a jumphook off glass. Late to tag a roll man and he picked up his third foul. Second Half: Quick first step to his left but he couldn’t finish the layup in the post. He faced up, attacked a wounded defender strong and was hacked for FTs, he missed both. He drew FTs in transition, he made both. He pushed out an inbounds and took it coast-to-coast for a layup with his right. He got a switch, moved his man into the paint and drew FTs, he made one. He drew FTs on the perimeter and made both. He was grabbed on the break for more FTs, he made both. He posted up, attacked middle and overpowered his man for FTs, he made one. Running the floor he drew more FTs with 1:08 left down 1, he made one again to tie it.

Kuzma -- He went stone cold for a stretch in the fourth missing three after three, missing a layup in the post on a play drawn up out of a timeout with 1:35 and even an easy layup filling the lane on the break. Those two were killers. Don’t know how he choked that breakaway layup. Just a bad fourth. They had him mic’d up in the game and Kuz was talking some trash early in the game. Pretty funny. Unfortunately, he didn’t back that up late in the game. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-16 shooting (3-9 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 39 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: Great job stepping in to take a charge on the first defensive stand. He posted up, drop stepped and banked. Turnover in the post next time down, losing the ball on a spin. He missed an open wing three on a kickout. He attacked off the three line and hit the running hook off glass (impossible to defend). He reached way back to grab a kickout, then rose up and knocked down the corner three. Off the mark on a high pass to Zubac, turnover. He pushed out the steal and hit KCP for a layup. He missed a long pull-up jumper. Second Half: He splashed a wing three. Got it back in transition a few seconds later and missed the corner three. He hit Lopez rolling for a dunk. He was blocked in transition. He missed a sideline three off a cross-court feed. He missed a running hook. Nice recovery to smother his man in the paint and force a brick. He sank a quick-fire wing three off a swing pass. He missed a step-back wing three. He missed another wing three. He took an inbounds with the shot clock low and missed the pull-up three. He choked an easy layup on the break, sheesh. Play drawn up for him out of a timeout and he couldn’t complete the layup off glass in the post with 1:35 left.

Lopez -- -- Soft tonight. Very soft first half on both ends from him. His help D was noticeably bad. He didn’t get in the paint offensively. Just wasn’t a positive factor in this game. He did sink a three with 1.8 left, but were unfortunately down 4 at the time with a foul to give. He was outplayed by Zubac, who should have had more of his minutes. I know there’s a balance with Randle out there where we want him to space the floor, but we also draw up post plays for him in those situations. When he was teamed with Frye, really no excuse. Coaches need to do better when it’s a low-scoring, grind out game on getting him in scoring position. Brook needs to be more aggressive at it. The Stats: He scored 9 points 3-8 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He cut down the lane and drew FTs on the layup attempt, he made both. He missed the floater off the give and go. Way short on a wing three. Way short on a three on the pick and pop. Second Half: He traveled at the three point line. Finally in the post and he hit a jumphook for his first basket. He tapped out a missed FT. He attacked WCS who had four fouls and picked up his fifth with that with 7:56 left in the third (and a tech on him). Way short again on a fading three (don’t know what his percentage is when he’s falling back, but it’s awful). He dunked off the screen-roll with Kuzma. He missed a point-blank putback. WCS blew past him and dunked on him. He sank a three with 1.8 seconds left.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Awful turnover out of a timeout in the final minute. It led to a breakaway dunk the other way. That killed us. We had a chance to go up 2, instead went down 2. He had another one earlier in the fourth when we tried to go without a point guard and had him initiate the offense. Instant turnover on the perimeter pass. The 4 turnovers were a season high. He had 12 points on 5-9 shooting to lead the Lakers at the half. But he scored just 4 in the second half. He was 0-6 from three. Stone cold from beyond the arc. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-13 shooting (0-6 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 39 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He swiped a ball, bumped off a defender and scored the breakaway layup. He missed a chuck from three next time down. He airballed a fading wing three at the buzzer. He airballed a three out of a timeout. He scored a layup filling the lane on the break. He attacked an open lane from the wing and scored an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He blew past his man and scored a layup. He missed a wing three. He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made one. He sized up Hield, attacked with speed and scored the lefty layup. Second Half: He missed an open wing three. He attacked from the corner and hit the And-1 across the middle of the lane, he made the FT. Bad shot selection, iso’ing and missing a long pull-up jumper. He made a tech FT. He threw a bounce pass out of bounds trying to hit Zubac rolling. Turnover on a pass. Turnover curling into the lane.

Caruso -- -- We lost our first, second and third options at PG in Lonzo, IT and Ingram. So Caruso got the start. He nearly got the building buzzing on a throwdown attempt past WCS down the lane at the start of the game. Just missed it. He’d make a three and score a couple of layups for his points. Not a lot of playmaking for anyone tonight as the offense didn’t have much flow. The stats don’t really show how disruptive he was defensively. They bogged down the Kings offense starting at the point of attack. Some good pass deflections, rotations and even a block. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-7 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He couldn’t finish the hammer around WCS on a drive off the three line. He lost the ball in a crowd out of a timeout. He curled around Brook, took the handoff and sank the sideline three. He airballed a wing three when his man went under. He missed a pull-up three at the buzzer. Second Half: He deflected a pass to get a stop. Nice help D to force a big into a travel. Another good help rotation and he drew a charge in the paint on WCS. He swiped a board away from a King and scored the layup. Late on a lob to KCP out of a timeout, turnover Lakers. He attacked to his right and scooped in a layup. He lost the dribble trying to squeeze between defenders, turnover. He rejected Fox from behind with 1:19 left.

Hart -- -- A bad loss like this probably means he can’t go attend the NCAA championship game to watch his former team. He doesn’t seem quite in rhythm yet offensively. His balance looks off in his three shooting. “Got to give them credit. They were physical,” he said of the Kings. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-8 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He missed a corner three, getting off balance. He missed a wing three off a swing pass. He probed baseline and hit his big for a score. Second Half: He swished a wing three on a DHO with Frye. Way short on a three straight away. He missed a long three on iso at the end of the quarter. He cut weakside and Zubac found him for a layup. He attacked and couldn’t finish. He spun in the paint and was blocked for a breakaway score the other way.

Frye -- -- His three shooting has looked awful. He finally sank one tonight, but he’s not really looking close on some of these. Some struggles on the defensive glass early on, but he got better as the game went along and finished with 9. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-4 shooting from three to go with 9 boards, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He missed a wing three on a pick and pop. Offensive board and he reset the offense. He gave up an offensive board and fouled. Second Half: He missed an open wing three. He finally sank a three after letting a man fly by and taking a dribble left. Short on another three attempt.

Zubac -- -- Maybe the only bright spot in this one. Really, nothing else to take away from this one but Zubac’s improved play of late. You want to see him back in the game down the stretch with how he’s been balling. Excellent D to start this game. He was denying guard drives as well as forcing his own man to miss on iso. He had 7 points and 6 boards at the half. He was strong again in the paint in the second half, especially on the offensive glass where he battled to regain possessions and draw fouls. Really impressed with his defense in the last couple of games. It’s picked up. He’s going after shots and has a real presence once again. Got to make your FTs, Zu. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-6 shooting (1-4 from the line) to go with 10 boards (4 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: Nice challenge at the rim to prevent a score. He couldn’t finish a dunk in a little traffic, got it back and hit the jumphook instead. He roofed a driving guard to smother a shot. He threw down a lob from Ennis on the pick and roll. He shut down another drive going vertical on Mason to deny him. He swiped a pass and pushed up the dribble. Another good challenge on a jumphook. He drew FTs rolling when Ennis found him, he made one. He scored a layup off the interior feed from Hart. Second Half: He battled for an offensive board, turned and missed the jumphook. He hit Hart cutting for a layup. He couldn’t finish a layup after the chair got pulled on him in the post. He was fouled battling on the offensive glass to regain a possession. He drew FTs on the offensive glass again, he missed both. He forced VC into a miss on a drive.

Ennis -- -- Really can’t ask for too much more from Ennis than what you got tonight. A couple of scores at the rims on drives. The 4 assists with 1 turnover (which he immediately stole back). He had the team-high +11. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and no fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He pushed it up and hit the trailing Randle filling the lane for the dunk. He attacked the paint and scored a layup over a defender. He blocked a layup from behind. He attacked a lane to his left and scored the lefty layup over the D. He lobbed to Zubac for a dunk to start the quarter. He bricked a deep three up against the shotclock. He hit Zubac rolling for FTs. Second Half: Dribble fest and he missed a runner, but we got it back. He missed Zubac open and botched a break. He threw a pass away, then swiped it back. He probed and threw it away.

Walton -- -- Losing Ingram again to go with Ball and no IT, Luke’s options at the PG dwindled. He started Caruso with Ennis backing up… Tied 10-10, Caruso out for Ennis with 5 minutes left in the first… Zubac in for Lopez… Randle sat with his second foul with under 4 left. Hart in and we slid Kuzma to PF… Kuzma out for Frye, Lakers tied 16-16… The Lakers led 22-19 after the first quarter… He started the Zubac, Frye, Kuzma, Hart, Ennis lineup… Lakers up 7 when Ennis sat for Caruso after 4 minutes… Zubac out for Lopez, Lakers up 6 (excellent D by Zubac)… Randle and KCP in to get all starters back in midway through the quarter… They lost the league and Luke called a timeout… Hart in for Kuzma, Lakers up 4 with 4 to go… Randle picked up his third and sat for Kuzma… Frye in instead… They were tied 43-43 at the half. Lakers shot just 13% from three… Randle picked up his fourth with 7:23 left. Luke took him out for Frye… Need to exploit Lopez in the post now… Nope, Zubac in shortly later, Lakers up 1, after going scoreless… Kuzma out for Hart, Lakers up 1… Ennis in for Caruso down 2… The Lakers led 64-60 heading into the fourth… He started the lengthy Zubac, Frye, Kuzma, Hart, Ennis lineup… KCP in for Frye, Lakers down 1… Zubac out for Randle with 8:35 left, Lakers down 1… Caruso back in for Ennis with 8 minutes left up 2… Lopez in for Caruso tied up with 4 and half minutes left. Not sure who you call the PG here. Looks like KCP, who turned it over on his first trip down… Caruso back in down 2 with 2:22 left… Ugly game…

Thanks

What happened to our vets - Lopez and KCP

It is games like this that shows if Randle is presently and/fast-approaching being a legitimate star. He has already shown that he is very talented and effective when he has good players around him. With Randle in a contract year, is he and/or very close to a force to be depended on like other players that he aspires to be or paid the $$$$ that he will be asking?

Hopefully he will accept a contract that will allow him to develop in a system that is tailored made for his skill set. If not, he can major $$$$$$ from a low level team (Nets) and not be in a situation to thrive and compete for rings (like Ariza before he was with the Rockets)

With Kuzma, Lopez and KCP having an off night . . .

It feels like our guys flipped the switch to "going through the motions" about a week or week and a half ago. Maybe they have mentally checked out, or maybe they have simply cried uncle after their main players had to play so many minutes (with all the injuries) for a long stretch, and maybe it's both. But whatever the case, we've lost our juju. And I don't mean Smith-Schuster.

Thanks DB only a few games left.

Zubac finally getting some PT and responding with good defense and offense.

Randle doesn't seem to get the calls but that will probably come down the road once he solidifies his reputation. They called him on some chippy fouls which hurt his aggressiveness early in the game.

KCP is not a ball handler. Terrible 4th Quarter.

Kuzma was terrible, missing crunch time layups. 1st bad game in a long time.

Why no Travis Wear?

Game shows why you need a point guard.

Thanks DB. Disappointing letdown. Only Randle's played every game this season. And he's very physical. Says something for that off season workout program he went through last summer.

True - but some guys are playing their way off of the roster.

Yeah, am not understanding why the developing players are not getting more minutes consistently all year? Can you speculate?
Appreciate your summaries, especially because living up her in Idaho means not always getting broadcasts.

Nah our dudes were sleepwalking for a lot of this game. Hopefully they will be more refreshed in time for the next game.
