Turnover Prone… A combination of Laker carelessness and aggressive D from their opponent set the tone for this game.

The Lakers trailed after the first after some early turnover-prone ball, but they pushed the pace in the second quarter, getting to the line consistently and stretching the lead to as much as 12 points.

They picked back up with the turnovers, however, to start the second half as the Wolves put the clamps on. The Lakers offense dried up.

They trailed by 7 heading into the fourth, but were outscored 14-2 in the first three minutes of the quarter and this one was all but over. The TWolves would cruise to a 113-96 win.

“They’re a good defensive team. They’re big, they’re strong, they’re physical,” Luke said.

The Lakers gave up 30 points off 21 turnovers. Meanwhile, the TWolves didn’t have a second half turnover and finished with just 5 on the night. As a result, the TWolves had 21 more shots than the Lakers. Hard to compete when that happens.

Randle -- -- “His willingness to continue to grow as a player is impressive,” Luke said. They want him to be more of a playmaker and slow down to read the D a little more. He’s gotten better at that in the past month. Slow start tonight. He had 8 points on 1-6 shooting in the first half and three turnovers. To be fair, he looked hacked a couple of times with no call. But the turnovers piled up in the second half on careless plays on the perimeter. That helped the Lakers lose their lead. Some careless ball. Offensively, there were times in this one that he could have really gone to the midrange jumper versus always attacking. He got to the line a ton and made all 10 attempts. The box score probably looks a bit more dominant than his impact really was tonight. Still, nice to see him scratch out 20-10 when things aren’t going great. He was best offensively in transition, either as the tip of the spear in those situations or being set up trailing the break or on secondary break sequences. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 5-11 shooting (10-10 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 2 assists, 5 turnovers and 3 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He spun into the defender and was blocked in the post. His perimeter pass was picked off and he was beaten to the loose ball. He missed a layup in transition worried about the charge. He was called for a travel in the post. He attacked down the lane and scored a lefty layup. Nice challenge on a guard on a switch to get a stop. He posted up, spun to the middle and was fouled on the 5-footer, he made both FTs. He traveled on a kickback that didn’t kick. He attacked baseline and kicked to KCP for three. Quick attack in transition for FTs, he made both. Burst of speed in transition and he missed a layup wanting the FTs, but Hart was able to score off that. He drew FTs trailing on the break and trying to finish the layup, he made both. He was “stripped” (fouled badly) in the paint for a turnover. He missed a short one. Second Half: He muscled his way on the baseline for FTs, he made both. Careless dribble on the perimeter, unforced error, then he fouled. He iso’d, spun and hit the jumphook on the baseline. He crashed the glass and put back in a missed jumper. He threw a pass right to Butler for a dunk the other way. He slammed off the screen-roll. He was rejected attacking a crowd. He threw down a dunk on the secondary break. More FTs trailing the break, he made both. Interior feed to Zubac for FTs.

Kuzma -- Just 2 points on 1-4 shooting in the first half. He twisted his ankle in the midpost in the first half. After trying to go in the second half, they pulled him early in the third quarter. He looked pretty mobile but wasn’t effective offensively. Lakers certainly missed his scoring punch as the offense flatlined in the second half. Luke said he usually plays through injuries well, but was struggling with it tonight. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-6 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He showed the ball on a high dribble on the perimeter (I think he was getting ready to spin) and was picked for a dunk the other way. He missed a wide open three straight away. He missed the runner in transition. He posted up, spun and hit the turnaround. He traveled as he twisted an ankle. Second Half: His lob pass hit the front of the rim, so that will lower his three shooting percentage. He blocked Butler in the paint. He airballed a short one taking contact on the other end with no call. He was called for a charge, rocking KAT back on a drive (weak). He missed a three on a kickout, then gave up an And-1 on the other end.

Lopez -- -- Hot start from Lopez as he worked the post against KAT as well as sank a couple of threes for the Lakers first 15 points in the first quarter. He’d finish the first half with 18 points on 7-9 shooting. I thought Luke kind of chilled him after that. They didn’t go back to him, sat him early and for a while and didn’t go back to him again when he returned. So much for the hot hand hand early. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-10 shooting (2-3 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He overpowered KAT in the post and scored and And-1 a few feet from the hoop, he made the FT. Drop step and easy layup next time down. He was blocked on a spin in the post. Back in the post again, he hit the turnaround fade at the FT line. He saved a ball on the sideline, picked it up and sank the wing three. He sank a wing three on his next touch on the other side of the court. Back in the post, he backed his man down, avoided the help D and hit the short one. He missed a three, crashed the glass to get a KCP miss shortly later and dunked it back in for an And-1, he made the FT. Second Half: Long hook attempt, not a good look and he missed. He was called for a travel getting bumped in the post with no call.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He had a highlight reel play in the first half deflecting a pass, tracking it down and tapping the loose ball over the D to himself for the breakaway dunk. Very nice. He had a couple of threes as well in the first half. He didn’t hit anything in the second half and the Lakers faded badly. Rare dud from him lately. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-13 shooting (2-6 from three) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 35 minutes. He was a -19. The Action: Great read to flag down a kickout, he then tapped it over a defender and took it for the jam. He sank a wing three working behind a screen. He missed a three in early offense. Hesitation dribble to lose his man and the ball, turnover. He hit a three on a kickout from Randle. He missed a runner in the paint. He missed a corner three after getting the offensive board. He missed a three off the draft screens. He stripped his man in the post on the other end. He attacked with speed and missed a layup. He missed a runner in the paint. Second Half: He missed a three in transition. He missed a long pull-up jumper. He tried to iso and was swatted. He didn’t hit iron on a pull-up midrange jumper.

Caruso -- -- The back and forth with the South Bay Lakers has got to be a bit exhausting. Luke limited Caruso’s time out there tonight. He’s score a layup going coast to coast for his only score. Defensively, some nice reads and rotations to be disruptive. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: His post entry pass was picked off for a dunk the other way. Nice rotation in the paint to swipe a pass. He missed an open wing three on a kickout. Good switch on the two-man game to force a bad pass and turnover. Second Half: He missed a turnaround jumper. Out of a timeout, he took an inbounds coast to coast for a layup. He missed a wing three.

Hart -- -- He had 11 points and 7 boards in the first half, scoring half the Lakers bench points (and outscoring the entire TWolves bench, as well, in the first half). He’d hit a couple of threes and score an And-1 layup in the second half to finish with the 20-11 game. He and Zubac have been giving the Lakers some nice punch off the bench. Hart got the minutes tonight (32) as Kuzma was limited. He picks his spots. He attacks in transition or off the three line when he has the opportunity. He spaces the floor and waits for the catch and shoot opportunities in the half court. Rare you see him doing anything outside of that. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 6-12 shooting (3-6 from three, 5-7 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He missed a three at the top of the arc. Horrible inbounds with 5 seconds left in the quarter to give up a transition opportunity the other way. He sealed Crawford under the hoop for a layup. He sank a three trailing the break. His layup was blocked. He pushed out the break and drew FTs, he made both. He drew FTs on the offensive glass in transition, he made one. He got backdoored on one end, but got it back in transition a few seconds later for a layup. He set up Randle for FTs in transition. He attacked the paint, switched hands and was fouled, he made both FTs. Second Half: He attacked off the three line, spun and was swatted out of bounds. He missed a three in transition. He was picked trying to push out the break. Short on an open three straight away. He drained a three off a swing pass at the buzzer. His pass was deflected on the perimeter, turnover. He pushed out a rebound with speed and scored an And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He hustled back to prevent a transition score. He swished a corner three.

Frye -- -- He seemed a bit rushed on the shot tonight and couldn’t connect from three. Combine that with 3 turnovers from a player who is low usage? Not good. He’d pick up a tech for bumping a player out of bounds after getting hacked with no call. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-3 shooting from three (2-3 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed a quick-fire three. Nice bounce pass to Hart on the set play to start the second quarter for a layup. He was stripped and then called for a bogus flagrant as he bumped a man out of bounds (Luke was furious). He was fouled on a corner three, he made two FTs. He missed a wing three. He missed another wing three on a kickout. Second Half: Swing pass to Hart for a three. He threw a pass away on a busted sequence.

Zubac -- -- He matched up against KAT while out there in the first half. I think he got the best of that matchup as both players got to the offensive glass, but KAT ended up in foul trouble and had to sit for the rest of the half. Zubac had 4 offensive boards in the first half. He’d finish with the 14-9 game with 6 offensive boards. He’d score mostly off little floaters and jumphooks and getting to the line. Good effort from him. We don’t have any playmaking guards out there, so I wouldn’t expect any big scoring games, but he managed that tonight. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-10 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards (6 offensive) and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He threw down a dunk cutting off Ennis’s drive to take the pass. Offensive board and he reset the offense. He didn’t box out and gave up a putback jam. He missed a tip in, got it back and missed the short putback. Another offensive board tapped out for the TWolves. He drew another foul on KAT as Zu was getting after it on the offensive glass and that led to KAT’s third of the half with 8 minutes left. He tipped in a missed shot. Second Half: He missed a long turnaround trying to beat the shotclock. He was fouled in the paint for FTs, he made both. He hit a jumphook after a loose ball came to him. He missed a flat jumphook next time down, possibly trying to draw a foul. Payton found him in the paint for a score. He was fouled on a dunk attempt off an interior feed, he made both FTs. He hit a baseline floater.

Ennis -- -- Not much from the Laker guards tonight. Teague dominated with 25 and 8 assists. Ennis was able to hit a three, score on a reverse and scratch out some FTs. But the Laker offense really lacked a consistent, efficient playmaker. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-6 shooting (1-2 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He hit Zubac cutting for a dunk. He crossed over a big and reversed around him. Great job changing ends in transition and going vertical to prevent a layup. Quick pushout and that earned him FTs at midcourt, he made both. Poor post entry pass and then he fouled. Second Half: He ballwatched and gave up an open three. Not a good look on a drive and he missed. He missed another drive. Fouled on another drive, he made one FT. He sank a three as the D went under the screen. He missed a wing three.

Wear -- -- Some SF minutes in the second half as Kuzma went to the locker room. Some pretty good D by the TWolves tonight as our shooters got very few open looks without rushing things. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting to go with 1 foul in 8 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Flat on a pull-up jumper after moving in off the three line. He faced up in the post and missed a jumper.

Bryant -- -- In for garbage time with 3 minutes left. He was able to score a layup on the break. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 1 assist in 3 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He scored a layup getting out on the break.

Payton -- -- Rare sighting as he got some minutes late in the first half and then again in the fourth when things were getting out of hand. He bricked both FTs he took as well as missed a floater. He did tie Ennis with a team-high 4 assists. The Lakers as a team had just 16 assists on the night. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists and 2 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He got out of position and gave up an And-1. Second Half: He missed a floater, got it back and hit Zubac for the score. He attacked and fed Zubac for the floater. He drew FTs pushing up the break, he missed both.

Walton -- -- The Lakers led 15-14 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. All 15 points were from Lopez either working KAT in the post or hitting threes… Down 1 when Frye, Hart and Ennis came in for Lopez, Caruso and Kuzma. Not sure why he didn’t stick with Lopez longer… Timeout shortly later, down 3… Lakers turnover prone to start… The Lakers trailed 30-26 after the first quarter (8 turnovers)… He started a Zubac, Frye, Kuzma, Hart, Ennis lineup… Randle in for Frye, Lakers up 2… Lopez in for Zubac, Lakers up 3… KCP in for Kuzma… Lakers pushing tempo and getting to the line to extend the lead to 9… Payton in for Ennis up 9… They pushed the lead to 12… Poor close, unable to get some chippies in the paint… The Lakers led 58-51 at halftime… Scoreless start to the half and the lead was trimmed to 1… Down 3 when Luke called a timeout. Too many turnovers again… Kuzma to the locker room out of that timeout. Hart in… Ennis in for Caruso… Down 10, he called another timeout. Lakers scoring just 10 points after 10 minutes… He went with Wear, Frye, Zubac, Hart and Ennis. Horrible possession out of that as we had a long turnaround attempt for Zubac trying to beat the shotclock as our play busted… The Lakers trailed 80-73 heading into the fourth… Luke picked up a tech to open the fourth (now tied for the league lead among coaches with 10)… Game slipping away here… KCP in for Hart, Lakers down 19 after a 14-2 start for the Wolves in 3 minutes… Zubac, Randle, KCP, Payton, Ennis lineup… Lead ballooned to 20 and was cut to 15 to force a timeout, but no rally from the Lakers tonight…

Tough to win against quality teams when Zo and BI are both out and then Kuz as well. Randle, Hart and Zu tried their best. No idea why Luke didn't try to get more minutes and plays called for Lopez tonight.

Thanks DB

Zubac has had a really strong finish which is good to see.

Has Hart found his game again he was really good.

Time for Randle to bring out the mid range set shot.

Thanks again DB. Tough seeing all those turnovers. Wow. Great game by Hart. Zubac can be surprisingly effective out there. I hope Kuz's ankle is OK.

I’m actually not too upset the lakers lost. It makes it harder for the clippers to get a playoff spot. We better beat them on the last game though

How was Josh Hart's Pull up J in transition? Jump stop? Step into it? Well balance, upright on the jump?
