Andre Ingram… It’s a beautiful thing to see someone achieve a lifelong dream. For Andre Ingram, the NBA dream has been tantalizingly close, yet just out of reach for 10 long years.

With two games remaining in the season, the Lakers called up the 32-year-old rookie. His gray-tinged hair showing the long, hard miles of that decade of determined pursuit for this moment.

Out of obscurity and into the national spotlight, Ingram entered the game late in the first quarter.

What happens next is perhaps a salute from the basketball gods, themselves.

He sank his first shot of the game, a three off a swing pass. He then got fouled on a drive for a couple freethrows. He hit another three. Then Ingram drained an And-1 pull-up jumper, and Staples rained down the “M-V-P” chants as he went to the line.

Don’t wake up, Andre.

“It doesn’t matter what he’s doing, he will give his best every single time,” his wife explained in the second half just before Ingram knocked down a three.

Ingram would hit another three in the final minute to cut the lead to 3. Had he gotten a call after getting trampled on his only missed three of the night, perhaps this three would have tied up the game. Who knows? It doesn’t really matter. Ingram had already won the night just being here. Add in 19 points on just 6-8 shooting along with 4 blocks and a steal…yeah, he won the night and then some.

What was going on in his head while he was making those shots?

“I was happy for all the others that wanted to see me do well,” he said. Beautiful humility from the man, as well.

“Hell of an opening night,” Luke told him in the locker room as he handed him the game ball afterward.

I doubt he gets much sleep tonight, but, hell, maybe it’s all a dream for him anyway.

Randle -- -- Luke planned to limit the run of his starting bigs tonight. Randle still put up some good numbers. I’m not sure if Julius was exploring his game a little more, but he sank a long step-back jumper, missed a three and also hit a fade. So a little more perimeter action that usual. Late last season we had our guys shooting more threes, so maybe the staff is encouraging that a little more. Mix that in with his usual assortment of scores at the rim and overpowering people or knocking them down. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 7-12 shooting (0-1 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 8 boards (5 offensive), 1 assist, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He smothered Harden to force an airball attempt from three. He threw a kickout out of bounds. He swiped a bad pass, gave it up on the break, got it back and scored the layup. He sank a step-back 19-footer on iso (that shot would take him to another level). He missed a leaner, got it back and was called for a charge leading with the elbows before going up. He swiped an offensive board and dunked. He missed a deep three as a man went under a screen. He was stripped in the paint trying to power up. Second Half: He tipped in a missed a jumper, no one around him. He faced up, up-faked and hit the short fade in the paint. He pulled it out, backed his man down, up-faked and scored easily at the front of the rim. Next time down, he had the floor spaced, attacked down the middle of the paint and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed a floater, but was fouled on the putback, he made both. His kickout was picked off.

Lopez -- -- He struggled a bit from the three line, but was effective in the paint. The Lakers only ran him limited minutes, but it seemed like he would have had a big night had he gotten time. Good bounce back game in that regard. Defensively, all of our bigs got picked on as the Rockets got switches and looked to exploit them. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-11 shooting (1-5 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He up-faked, attacked and couldn’t finish the layup. Low position and he powered up an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He sank a 15-foot fade working the post. He missed a runner on the break. Telegraphed a post entry pass and it was easily picked off. He got tapped on a wide open wing three. He swished a wing three on a kickout. Second Half: He hit a jumphook in the post. He posted up again next time down and swished the turnaround. He missed a step-back corner three. He missed an open three trailing the break. He missed a wide open corner three.

Hart -- -- He led the Lakers with 20 points, getting some late game scores. A little more iso or calling his own number at times than typical and he got up 17 shots as a result. I actually don’t mind that. I’m curious to see him explore a little more of that part of his game to see what he can and can’t pull off. Of all the Lakers on the fastbreak, I think I have the most confidence in him finishing a layup. He had several of those tonight (and also a scary foul from Tarik, undercutting him from behind on one). The Stats: He scored 20 points on 8-17 shooting (2-8 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He got tapped on a three on iso. He stepped into a three in transition and knocked it down. He missed a step-back fade. He scored a layup on the break. He missed a three on iso. Second Half: He scored a layup on the break. He missed a wing three. He scored a layup out on the break with Ingram. He sank a pull-up wing three in transition. He missed a wing three. He powered in a layup on the break. He took a feed from Caruso on the break for the layup. He got undercut on the break for FTs, he made both. He overthrew Bryant on the break, turnover. He was blocked on a drive. He cut off Zubac’s post up, took the pass and scored the layup. He iso’d and missed the step-back 17-footer. He missed a three on the break.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Poor game from KCP tonight. He made just one shot, which was a transition three and he clanked everything else. Lakers could have used a little more fire power from their vets, especially in the opening quarter where we struggled to manufacture points. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-8 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He hit Randle on the break with a bounce pass for a layup. He missed a challenged pull-up jumper. He bricked a pull-up 16-footer on the break. He missed a three straight away. Second Half: He hit Hart on the break for a layup. He missed a floater. He sank a three in transition. He swiped a perimeter pass. He missed an open wing three. He missed a wing three. He kicked out to Ingram for a three on the break. He missed a three straight away.

Caruso -- -- He was quickly into foul trouble in this one. He sat after a couple minutes, then re-entered the game later and quickly picked up his third foul of the half. Somehow, he avoided a foul the rest of the night. He’d make a three in a two-for-one situation and get blocked on a couple of other shot attempts by Zhou Qi. Late in the game he drew a charge call to get a stop and also hit a flat fade in the paint, as well as find Ingram for a three. Up and down moments, but he led the Lakers with 6 assists and a +12. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-8 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He fired a pass out of bounds on the break. He missed an open corner three. He attacked to his left and scored with his right. He crossed over and was blocked on a pull-up at the FT line, not a good look. He sank a deep two-for-one three. Second Half: He swiped a pass. He missed a corner three. He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made both. He threw a bounce pass away. He turned a defender around on the break then fed Hart on the other side of the floor for a layup. He sank a flat fade in the paint off a handoff. He was blocked on a three. He drew a perimeter charge on Green with some nice anticipation to cut him off. He picked up his dribble in the paint and was blocked on a turnaround attempt. He kicked out to Ingram for a three off an offensive board.

A. Ingram -- -- Blow up the Twitter, old man. The all-time leader in three-pointers in the developmental league. Andre Ingram at age 32 finally got a call to the NBA. The obvious comparison is like Crash Davis in the movie Bull Durham as the minor league career homerun leader. The other Ingram on this team was just 6 years old when Andre started his college ball and 10 years old when Andre first played in the developmental league. This feel-good story wouldn’t feel good, of course, if Luke didn’t get him some minutes. Luke did that and Andre delivered. He led the Lakers with 11 points in the first half on 3-3 shooting. “It was once in a lifetime. It was awesome,” Ingram said of the game. As he entered the game, CP3 stopped him to tell him how proud he was of Ingram to get his chance. It wasn’t lost on anyone that the two are the same age. In the second half, he picked up where he left off. More threes and a floater on a play set up for him. I think Luke called his number out of deadballs at least three times in this game. Not because of charity, but because he was killing it. He’d end up with 19 points – the most points in a Laker rookie debut since Nick Van Exel. Defensively, his hands were great. He had a few strip blocks to prevent scores and another steal. It was a long time coming, but for a night, Andre Ingram finally arrived. Hard not to get a little emotional seeing someone live out their dream. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 6-8 shooting (4-5 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He sank a wing three on a swing pass from Wear. He attacked off the three line next time down and drew FTs on the floater, he made both. He sank another three straight away shortly later, a couple feet behind the line (bench on its feet). He moved in off the three line and hit the And-1 17-footer from the left wing, he made the FT. He was called for a charge in the paint, iffy call. Second Half: His first touch of the second half, he hit a wing three on the break off a kickout. He stripped a man under the hoop, pushed it out and fed Hart for the layup. He couldn’t finish a lefty layup on the break (first miss with 5 minutes left). He curled into the paint, took the pass, attacked left and hit the floater with his right. He missed a wing three, getting obviously run over with no call (should have been FTs). He sank a wing three on a kickout with 51 seconds left to cut it to 3 (had he gotten that foul call earlier, that could have tied the game up…thanks refs!).

Frye -- -- He hit a corner jumper and a turnaround in the paint. No threes falling tonight. Luke spread the minutes around his bigs tonight. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 2-6 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 15 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He sank a corner jumper off an inbounds. He missed a pull-up three. Bad idea on a bounce pass that wasn’t there, turnover. He missed a tough turnaround after ball stopping at the wing. He hit a turnaround in the paint. He got dunked on by Harden. Second Half: He gave up a three, not staying close on Johnson. He missed a wing three. He missed a heave at the buzzer.

Zubac -- -- CP3 whet through Zubac’s legs on a dribble and scored a layup off it. No doubt that will be played a million times over. Sorry that happened to Zu. He’s a good kid. It’s tough to have him switching in those situations and left out there to hold the line. He actually had a couple decent moments doing that, but it only takes one moment like that to forget about everything else. Zubac got his only score on a reverse in the paint. He also had a nice feed to Hart cutting for his only assists. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He was stripped in the post. Second Half: He took the high entry and reversed easily. Nice D holding the line against CP3 on iso, then switching onto a big and forcing a brick in the post. He was tapped on a lefty putback attempt. He posted up, drew defenders and hit Hart cutting for the layup. He missed a bank shot.

Ennis -- -- All of his scoring was in the paint tonight. He had a few layups and a jumphook. The Lakers had some odd moments tonight of good passing or too much iso in the halfcourt. They were at their best in transition. Good job by the Laker guards taking advantage of that when they got the opportunities. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-7 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He couldn’t finish a drive across the lane. He blew past Nene on a switch and scored the layup. He missed a pull-up on iso. He iso’d and hit a jumphook over Harden. He reversed for a score. Second Half: His lob pass was picked off. His kickout was picked off. He attacked and missed a floater. He took it coast to coast for a lefty layup. He faked a handoff and was fouled for FTs (last year he would have had continuation on that), he made both.

Wear -- -- Could have used a better shooting night from him. He sank one three, which he banked, and he missed everything else. He did show some moments of good D again, with a nice block on help D and a steal. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-6 shooting (1-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He blocked a layup on a help rotation. He banked in a wing three on a kickout. He missed an open corner three on a swing pass. He telegraphed a backcourt pass, turnover. He missed a wing three in transition. He missed a face-up jumper at the halftime buzzer. Second Half: He missed a 10-footer in the paint. He jab stepped and missed a three.

Payton -- -- Caruso picked up two quick fouls so Luke went to Payton just 2 minutes into the game. A couple nice offensive boards and he also stripped a man from behind, but no scoring tonight. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 offensive boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and no fouls in 8 minutes. H was a -9. The Action: He grabbed an offensive board and choked the layup. He stripped a man from behind. He missed a wing three up against the shotclock. Offensive board and he fed Lopez for three. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Bryant -- -- Most notable thing from his game was a whack to the shoulder he gave Mbah a Moute at the rim that dislocated his shoulder. Otherwise, he missed both FTs he took, missed a step-back badly and got crossed over by Tarik for a score. Not a good night. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 8 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He couldn’t finish a lob. He airballed a step-back fade against a smaller man. Second Half: He was held on the break for FTs, he missed both. He got crossed over by Black and gave up a layup.

Walton -- -- Caruso with 2 quick fouls in 2 minutes, so Luke brought in Payton… The Rockets started to knock down threes and build a lead… He brought in Frye, Ennis and Zubac for Randle, KCP and Lopez down 6… Andre Ingram in with 1:53 left for Payton… The Lakers trailed 23-16 after the first quarter… He started a Zubac, Frye, Caruso, A. Ingram, Enis lineup. Caruso picked up his third foul 45 seconds later and sat for Wear… Bryant in for Zubac… A. Ingram and Wear hitting threes to bring the Lakers back… Luke called a timeout not liking how the offense was being run. He tried to setup an elevator screen for Ingram out of that but Bryant was called for a moving screen… Hart in for Frye and we slide Wear to PF, Lakers down 2… Rockets not missing threes and Luke called a timeout, down 7… He brought back in Caruso for Ennis… Frye in for Bryant down 10… The Lakers trailed 56-48 at the half. Andre Ingram leading scorer for L.A.… The Lakers opened with an 11-0 run to take the lead and force a timeout… Zubac in for Lopez, Lakers up 2 with 5 minutes left… Frye and A. Ingram in for Randle and Hart, Lakers down 5 with 3:20 left… The Lakers gave up a series of threes (9-0 run) and trailed 82-75 heading into the fourth… He started a Zubac, Wear, Hart, Ingram, Ennis lineup… Bryant in for Zubac midway through, Lakers down 8… Lakers coming up empty on the break a few times. Luke called a timeout down 12… Luke ticked on a no call on Ingram’s three attempt. Obvious foul… Timeout with 32 seconds left, Caruso threw it away after the first option was denied (really that one is on Zubac getting pushed on a screen by a smaller man instead of holding ground…otherwise, Ingram has an open look on a corner three)…

Thanks DB for the whole season. This is my favorite Laker post game analysis anywhere.

Magic did a great thing with Ingram and the league noticed. The seasons over for the Lakers and he found a way to make them relevant around the entire league. He was the main topic on TBS halftime show. Great story and great move by Magic. Of course Ingram made the story by having a huge game.

Hart another good game as he finishes strong.

Randle looked good shooting from the outside. Looks like he got his hops back.

I was thinking the same thing. If you were to recommend a few games to watch this season, this would be right up there with any.

I couldn't help but feeling like Andre Ingram myself -- a salt and pepper haired guy who just keeps plugging away -- except he has a better jumper than I do. I really enjoyed the real life story being played out on the Staples floor. Props to him and the Lakers!

I was with my 16-year-old son at the game last night, and the place was LIT. UP.

Genuinely warm welcome from the crowd when he came into the game. When the 1st 3-pointer went in? Great ovation from the crowd, really cool reaction. Then the 2nd one? People were STANDING UP and cheering.

And when he hit the runner? DAYUM, Staples darn near EXPLODED.

The MVP chants were FUN. People were laughing - not AT him, but FOR him, people were just that excited. When he started getting blocks/ steals, people were hollering and loving it all the way up through the cheap seats. And when it was crunch time, folks were yelling to pass the ball to Ingram.

I wasn't the only parent up there pointing to Ingram and telling their kid about how hard Ingram worked, how he didn't quit, and how good things can happen when you believe in yourself and stay ready for when you're needed. Since my son has been busting his tail in his junior year of HS this year and is now just starting to see the rewards of his hard work, I figure it hit home for both of us.

And when the game was over and people were crowding onto the escalators and jamming into the merch shops for the 50% off sales, people were STILL talking about "that Ingram guy."

Would've been nice to get the win, sure, but NO ONE went home feeling bad about the game. I still remember seeing Kobe's and Fish's debut game on TV, and Randle's when he went down with the leg injury, and Ball's and Kuzma's debut at SPL... but I am SO glad I saw Andre "Crash" Ingram doin' work his 1st night in the Show.

(Posted this originally in the Ingram thread, but just had to include it here.)

^ Great post! Thanks for the additional color on the atmosphere. Your son is the same year as mine and has been doing the same this year. Got a little dust or something in my reading that paragraph, my friend.

Agree with MIMLaker's post. I expected the loss and I was bummed so many of our guys are out and I couldn't see them play one last time this season, but the way AIngram story elevated the crowd and the game was really amazing and I was really happy to be there. Fun, fun night.

Thanks DB! One more to go...

His interview after the game from the locker room (not sure if you saw it since you were at the game) was unreal. Here it is if you wish to view it:

This guy is not like your typical NBA player, his humility and class (not to mention his amazing play on the court, my God) stood out to me as something very special.

So down to earth and cool....very easy guy to root for and want around your organization if you ask me. Which of course no one has!

Thanks DB! Excellent write-up!!!

What a GREAT night for Andre Ingram. I hate it when someone starts peeling onions in the kitchen at the close of games like this cause my eyes get all watery and people might think I'm all emotional or something. Heh. Silly of course. I mean it's just a 32 year old all-time 3 point developmental league leader who never got a chance to play in the NBA, finally getting his shot, and not only sinking 3 pointers at a torrid pace, but stealing and blocking like crazy for a gray haired 32 year old who's only 6 foot 3, and winning over the crowd and the whole country. And creating magic in the process, inspiring people of all ages. Nope. It's the onions.

I hate losing streaks but this was a huge ray of sunshine in the midst of all the injuries. This made a meaningless game anything but meaningless. Love the twitter feeds from all around the NBA after the game too! Fantastic.
