Would Julius (along with IT) consider doing a 1+1 contract to stay with the Lakers, in a system/coaching staff that believes in him and help make it a legitimate title contending team with Lebron and PG13 by doing something similar that KD will do this off-season
http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/23109223/kevin-durant-golden-state-warriors-plans-decline-player-option-restructure-deal

Lebron
PG13
Julius
Kuz
Bi
Ball
Hart
IT
Zubac
Bryant
Deng**
-
possibly with
Lopez
Caruso
?
?
?
** They would be able to keep Deng on the roster and be in a stronger position to trade him without sacrificing any assets with his expiring contract

Our roster would be a strong team

Randle is too young. He hasn't made his money yet and one freak injury can mean the end of any chance of getting nba money.

He should - and will - settle for nothing less than getting a long term contract at whatever maximum the market is willing to pay. He would be crazy not to.

Best viable option is to choose to pay him. Don't try to get cute or low ball him. Simply pay him what he has earned.

Much rather try convincing FAs (James?) to take pay cuts then maxing them out anyways. To truly compete the Lakers need to keep players not find ways to trade or cut them. Hoping any FAs sees that logic too.

Lebron has made a lot of money. I don’t think $5 mil cut will be a deal breaker. He knows that a guy like Randle can keep him fresh and extend his career. Our team has everything that he probably desire especially if PG13 tag along.

I am dubious of any scenario that depends on NBA players taking less money.

Among lower tier players, yes. Among the all-time greats? More common. LeBron (previously), Durant, Duncan, Dirk--off the top of my head. In this case, since Lebron has done it before to get the team he wants around him, despite his more recent pronouncements to the contrary, his past actions would indicate it's possible.

I agree. I am not depending on it either. But the precedent has been set. And is fair to consider. Perhaps the only realistic way for the Lakers to be legitimate contenders IMO.

James himself took less in MIA. As did Bosh and Wade. Durant is reportedly thinking of taking less this off-season to help the Warriors remain competitive. Multiple aging journeyman vets sign for significantly less for the chance to contend.

The current NBA formula is to have a Super Team. That takes multiple quality players and costs money. To win the players have to play the game too.

Owners realize that to maximize the chances to win they have to pay luxury tax. Players have to realize that if they take the max salary they limit their chances to win.

Use OKC as an example. Westbrook got paid. Now what? We have spent all year speculating that he will lose his ability to contend because the luxury tax is ridiculous. Will the owners pay George? Would he stay if they choose to re-sign him? Biggest "Laker " story of the off-season IMO.

Just curious but didn't James himself say he was done in giving discounts? Also, if James is willing to do it to give himself his best chance of getting the ring, why us? Wouldn't philly be a more logical option. They're in the weak east and they're talent is further along than we are.

Julius is not going to do the Lakers any favors. He worked his ass off in the off season and was rewarded by going to the bench. He has played his way to being the Lakers most consistent player and worthy of a nice payoff. Personally I keep Randle and add what I need in FA. Lebron plus the current Lakers is a playoff contender. PG even would. When Julius & Ingram were at their best, the Lakers were winning. Too many injuries late, but this team has a nice future. I would love them to find the right defensive minded center to play minutes, then go small with Julius at center for small stretches. Think of a lineup of Julius, Ingram, (Lebron or PG), SG (KCP/PG/Hart/Other), Lonzo. A truly positionless lineup with one bruiser and a lot of skill.

If you could add Lebron & PG you do it, but that may be a stretch. The dream of course would be to add both and keep most of the roster in tact. Lebron doesn't like to bang that much you need someone like Julius.

I am just following the reasoning of most discussed free agency scenario. I do agree he will have better options. Including my speculation of he will stay in CLE.

I am not on the signing James bandwagon at all. I will admit he has surpassed my expectations this year. James is fighting off Father Time pretty damn well. But I still think adding James is wrong player, wrong timeline.

But if he chooses to sign with the Lakers I certainly do not want him maxed out and creating a top heavy team salary for a declining player on his last run at the expense of younger long term players.

I think a higher priority should be keeping the team together as much as possible and add a couple key FAs. IMO Randle should be high on that list along with George and another guard. (Beverly?) or IT, KCP, if reasonable.

Try to keep Lopez if reasonable. Deng hopefully bought out to end the saga and keep the CLE pick to upgrade quality and depth at PG/SF?

Then let this team breathe for a couple seasons without the drama of trades, "2 max" or roster upheaval hanging over their heads. Let Walton coach and see what happens as the young core develops.

My fantasy and opinion! Realize it does nor match the current FO or most fan roster fantasies.

isn't Ingram, DLo (with Nets), Randle, and Nance (with Cleveland) also actually making more, but it just does not effect their cap number? If I recall, the rookie scale increase bumped all those on rookie deals.

You are probably thinking of the Conforming Increases that were put into the new CBA.

Quote:

c) As set forth in Article IV, Sections 6(g)(3) and 6(d), Rookie Scale
Conforming Increases and the CBA benefits associated therewith (e.g., the
employer’s share of payroll taxes) will both be included in the calculation
of Benefits (and thus, consistent with Article I, Section 1(www), in the
calculation of Total Salaries and Benefits). However, subject to Section
(d)(ii) below and as set forth in Article VII, Sections 3(j) and 4(a), the
Rookie Scale Conforming Increases shall be excluded from the calculation
of an individual player’s Salary and each Team’s Team Salary (and thus will
not affect, for example, the amount of room, if applicable, a Team has
below the Salary Cap, the amount of Traded Player Exceptions, etc.).

A viable option would be to offer a competitive contract, watch Randle sign it, then go grab lunch. Easy peasy. The Lakers has their shot at a bargain but they gambled and lost. Time to pay up.

Take less to work? Who does that? Just because it is big money doesn't change the way you look at it. I'm not going to another company for less money because they are cool or have a great CEO. Nor am I staying at my current job at less pay because the chairs are comfortable and I can go grab a perfect cup of coffee next door. Pay me and I'll work my ass off for you. The NBA is the same.

Now, when I retire maybe I work for a bit less so I can make my own schedule, come in when I want and take vacations on a whim. That is compared to an NBA player when he is at the end and won't get another big contract.

The Lakers need to pay Julius and keep him. He is the best available option at PF/C. Losing him will set the organization back a giant step.

IMO I don't see how we trade Deng to a team with space and bring nothing back in return... I still feel our best and most probable option is a trade with Chicago for Asik. We trade Deng and the Cleveland 1st for Asik. If we stretch Deng we are paying him 7.4 million for the next 5 years, if we stretch Asik we are only playing 2.9 over the same amount of time because he makes less and has a buyout for next season. We also save a little money with trading the 1st round pick vs a minimum cap hold... Overall the trade would give us a little over 5 million in additional cap space this summer vs just stretching Deng. This would give us enough money to just about max out George and James (they would each need to take a pay cut of less than 1 million).

There's teams who are rebuilding that are struggling to hit the salary floor. Absorbing that contract won't hurt them that much and makes sense to stockpile 1st round draft picks. Not all teams can find stars to spend money on. Atlanta might be a good destination for something like that.

Did he, though? I've heard this repeated often, but in the end the move was a sign-n-trade.
