Last Game of the Season… They kind of stumbled to the finish line, but were certainly entertaining most of the season.

The Lakers rolled out their last few remaining starters one final time tonight. They lost yet another to injury (KCP) in the process before handing the ball off the rookies and G-League lineups to abuse the Clippers.

Behind rookie Josh Hart catching fire in the third quarter, they stretched out to a 20-point lead. They dominated the Clippers, who didn’t play Lou Williams, with 17 threes on the night. Seven of those came from Hart, who finished with a career high 30 points.

Gary Payton II also added a career-high 25 points as the ball was moving well and finding open Lakers, who were knocking down shots.

“It was a full team effort tonight,” Luke said after the Lakers closed the season with the 115-110 win.

They finished with 35 wins on the season, which was right about where most projected them. Of course, that was usually with the caveat of “if healthy.” The Lakers certainly weren’t that.

Where will they be this time next year? The offseason will determine that.

Next season starts now.

Randle -- -- He was the Laker ironman this season. “That’s a badge of honor in this league,” Luke said afterward. He kind of cruised tonight. Short minutes and again we saw him take another three as he played a bit loose. Awful turnover-prone start to the second half, coughing up the ball or throwing it away on several straight possessions. Didn’t really seem to be too locked in with knowing this game was just a few minutes before the Lakers handed the ball off to the G-League guys. Offseason is going to be interesting. Last year (in this final game, I think), I mentioned that the third year is where you see what you really have with a lot of young players. This was Randle’s third year after missing the first with injury. He proved to be the consistent, two-way, unique impact baller that we saw flashes of. His defense grew immensely and will continue to grow. I think the perimeter shot will, as well. Hopefully, the stars align perfectly this offseason. He gives this team a combination of speed and physicality that’s pretty rare. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-3 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He scored a layup, stepping between two defenders. He kicked out to Lopez for a three. He fouled a three shooter. He stepped around his man in the post and was fouled on the reverse, he made both FTs. He pushed it up, got deep in the paint, spun and hit the jumphook. He missed a three trailing the break. Second Half: He attacked a crowd and threw it away. He was called for a loose ball foul after losing control of the ball. He got caught in the air and airmailed a kickout. He threw another pass away out of a double team. He kicked to Hart for a three.

Lopez -- -- He had the three ball going tonight. Limited action again and he mostly kept it behind that three line. I think most of the bigs tonight shot at least one three, even Zubac and Randle. No idea what happens to him this offseason. He either takes a large one-year deal if our free agency plans don’t work out or most likely takes some kind of sacrifice to stay with a team that’s likely contending. It will be interesting to see what the market looks like for him. “We’ll see how it goes,” Lopez said. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 4-7 shooting (3-5 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He swished an open three on a kickout. Sank another three on the kickout from Hart. He missed a deep wing three. He sank a jumphook from about 14 feet out over a smaller defender. He blocked a dunk attempt. He was fouled on a three in transition, he made all three FTs. He airballed a three in transition. Second Half: He attacked, spun and missed. He swished a deep three left open.

Hart -- -- “We got a lot of momentum going into next season,” Hart said afterward. And he certainly does. He dropped a career-high 30 points on 15 shots in his final game of the season. “It should motivate him to keep working,” Luke said. Yeah, the Lakers killed the draft this year. He led the Lakers with 14 points on 4-7 shooting in the first half to go with along with 4 assists, but he caught fire in the third quarter. As he was feeling it, he got more aggressive looking for his own shot on iso. He was sizing guys up and draining the three ball. The short form tonight was so consistent. Looked the same just about every time except for making a fading corner three. Heading into this season, you were hoping he’d grow into that 3 and D role. He kind of blew past that. It felt like he elevated his game two or three times as the season went along. First it was consistently hitting the three. Then it was the channeling his inner Charles Barkley with the double-doubles. This last stretch has been about combining all that with big numbers as he got more aggressive. “His mentality should be that I’m coming in to start at that position next year,” Luke said. They’ve got a good one on a cap friendly contract. Perfect player to fit around superstars. The Stats: He scored 30 points on 9-15 shooting (7-9 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He sank a corner three, fading a little after getting a return pass from the inbounds. He attacked and kicked to Lopez for three. Swing pass to Ingram for the three. He got backdoored and had to foul. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He sank an open three from the top of the arc. He setup Zubac for a layup off an interior feed. He choked an easy layup on the break. He was fouled on a three in transition, he made all three FTs. He was called for a travel on a floater. Nice job knocking a board away from Jordan. He knocked a lob pass away on one end and sank a pull-up wing jumper on the other. He missed a three from the top of the arc. He knocked down a wing three in transition, quick-fire off the catch. Second Half: He missed a pull-up three in transition. He stripped a man in transition to get a stop. He lost Wes on a rock-back dribble, attacked and was fouled, he made both FTs. He sank a catch-and-shoot three from the top of the arc (hold that pose). He took a pass, stepped into the wing three and swished over his man. Wide open after a Laker steal in the backcourt and he swished the open three (you knew that was going down). He took the ball at the top of the arc, backed up, attacked and hit the 30-footer. Heat-check turnaround jumper on iso and he missed. He charged on a drive off the three line. He missed a pull-up from the top of the key. He stole the ball, pushed it out and scored the layup.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He sprained a shoulder on a screen barely breaking a sweat into this game. This is why the Lakers were going easy on their rookies at the end of the season. They didn’t want an injury to slow down their work this offseason. So KCP’s night was cut short. Pretty good season from him. I think he showed a bit more offensively than I was expecting (especially when he caught fire from three after the All Star break). He really found a comfort zone as the season went along, especially after that poor start where his shot selection left a lot to be desired. Defensively, maybe a little less effective than I was hoping. Problem for KCP with this team is their free agency plans in the offseason, but also rookie Josh Hart, who’s pretty much killed it as a starter. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting in 2 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He missed a three on a kickout. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Caruso -- -- Steady ball while on the floor. He sank 3-4 from behind the arc and the shot was looking good. He also crashed the glass, pulling down 3 offensive boards. Very aggressive, decisive ball on both ends. He had a couple of great drive, draw and dish sequences. We really don’t get a lot of that from our PGs, so nice to see someone breaking down the D like that. Regardless of what happens this offseason, the Lakers are going to need to make a decision on a backup PG and a third string PG. I’ve got to think Caruso factors in there. You’ve got to fill out your deep bench and he fits the team much better than Ennis. Of course, neither guy could be on the roster, but you’ll be searching for guys to fill out the roster on minimum deals. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-11 shooting (3-4 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 7 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +21. The Action: He took an inbounds coast to coast for a layup. He missed a short turnaround in the paint. He sank a wing three on a swing pass. He crossed over between the legs, drew the help D and dished to Bryant for the dunk. Quick push out off the Bryant block and he drew FTs at the rim, he made both. Second Half: He missed a three in early offense. He lost the ball on a probe. He sank a three when the D went under the screen. He attacked off a handoff, drew the D and fed Zubac for FTs. He missed a floater but got it back. He missed a wing jumper trying to beat the shotclock. He attacked off a change of direction, missed the finish but Zubac dunked it back in. He was fouled on the perimeter for FTs, he missed both. He was blocked on a turnaround. He attacked left and finished left over his head. He orchestrated the offense, then hit the three.

A. Ingram -- -- With KCP spraining his shoulder, Ingram was quickly inserted into the lineup with the starters. Luke mentioned how well he did within their style of play. Make a quick decision and don’t ball stop. He did that all night. The shot either went up quick, he attacked or he moved the ball right after he got it. The assists he got were on some of those simple principles. Some good, quick swing passes to open teammates. That definitely played into why the Lakers knocked down 17 threes. Guys were getting wide open looks off the ball movement. So he didn’t score as much, but he led the team with 6 assists and a team-high +23. “We were just flowing pretty well,” he said. Defensively, he took a couple of charges (which I love) and had a couple of steals. Where he goes from here is anyone’s guess. Perhaps, he earns a camp invite next year. The season certainly closed on a high note for him and for the organization because of his story. “As long as I keep enjoying the process, I’m going to do it,” Ingram said. The spotlight shined on him for two games. Will it be enough to get that NBA payday? Someone give the man a contract. Anyone else just love hearing him talk in the post games? Just a bright, humble and happy guy. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-9 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 3 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 35 minutes. He was a +23. The Action: Nice screen on an inbounds play to free up Hart for the three. He swished a floater curling off a screen from the corner. A little off balance on a pull-up three and he missed. He swished a corner three on a swing pass in transition. He missed a quick-fire wing three in transition. He missed a drive, but Payton cleaned it up. Swing passes to both Payton and Caruso for threes. He got tapped on a pull-up wing jumper, attacking off the three line. He stepped in to take a charge in transition D. He had 5 points on 2-6 shooting and 3 assists in the first half. Second Half: He got tapped on a wing floater to start the second half. He missed a wing three. He missed a floater, but got it back. Swing pass out of bounds as a man vacated the corner in transition. He blindsided a big for the steal, but his out let was picked off. He drew a charge on the next defensive stand to get it back. Swing pass to Payton for a three.

Zubac -- -- Some more of that defensive presence tonight. He had one sequence where he blocked a shot out of bounds and on the subsequent play off that, he blocked another shot, but controlled it. Fisher pointed out after the game on the initial shotblock the crafty use of Zubac’s offhand on the shoulder of the player he rejected. He had his season high of 3 blocks. That defensive growth is really what I wanted most this season. I think most of the advanced stats show he’s making a good impact on that. “I got more experience playing with Brook. Going against him in practice really helped my game,” Zubac said. He mentioned his body will be his main focus this summer (getting stronger, more athletic). The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-5 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards (2 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: Interior feed from Hart to Zubac for a layup. He recovered to swat a reverse. He missed a jumphook in the middle of the paint. Second Half: He drew FTs on the drive and dish from AC, he made both. He rejected a man out of bounds. Same defensive set, he swatted and controlled a reversed layup attempt. He got bumped in the post and airballed the jumphook. He missed an open three. Putback jam to clean up Caruso’s dribble penetration. He grabbed an offensive board and reset the offense.

Ennis -- -- Pretty much most of his positive contributions came late in this season. Tonight, he was a little turnover prone, making some bad decisions on the pass. He missed both threes he took as the D pretty much went under screens consistently. I’ve got to assume this is his last game as a Laker. They looked at other options last offseason, but kind of backed into Ennis returning. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-8 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He found Hart for the open three. He missed a runner on a drive. Straight-line drive from the wing for a layup. He airballed a turnaround jumper. Poor bounce pass to Zubac, not close, turnover. He missed a wing three. He missed a three in early offense. He attacked baseline, jumped and threw it away. Second Half: He swiped a pass in the backcourt and hit Hart for the three. He swished a wing jumper off a handoff. He changed directions on the catch, attacked and hit the teardrop. He kicked to Payton for three. He missed a wide open elbow jumper.

Wear -- -- Quiet night. He’s been pretty quiet of late. He scored his only points on a turnaround in the post. Wouldn’t mind seeing him back on the summer league squad trying to defend that championship. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 2 boards and 2 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He faced up and missed the wing jumper. Second Half: He posted up and swished the turnaround.

Payton -- -- He finally showed a pulse tonight… and then some. A career high (pretty much got that in the first quarter). First time all season he’s done anything of real impact at the next level. After last night’s forgettable game, he caught fire early. It started with a good first quarter with 9 points, including a couple of putback scores and a three. He’d finish the first half with 13 points and 7 boards. The three ball was dropping, but he also hit from the midrange off the dribble, as well. Throw in a great job on the glass and you have the huge 25-12 double-double. He just had the confidence going and played aggressively. Asked about what he wants to work on in the offseason, the first thing he mentioned was shooting. His game just opened up a ton with the shot falling tonight. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 11-19 shooting (3-7 from three) to go with 12 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +22. The Action: He threw down a putback jam. He attacked off the three line to his left and scored the layup. He missed a wing three in transition. He rattled in a corner three off a swing pass. He cleaned up the dribble penetration miss from Ingram. He iso’d and missed a three at the end of the quarter. Sloppy with the dribble pushing it up, turnover. He stole the ball, pushed it up, was shoved with no call and given a turnover. He attacked in transition and scored a lefty layup over the D shortly later. Quick attack on the catch to get around his man and score the lefty layup. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. Second Half: Stripped on a drive. He pushed it up with speed and hit the pull-up jumper. He sank a step-back jumper at the FT line. He blindsided a man for a steal, pushed out the break and threw it away. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He knocked down an open corner three on a kickout. He swished a three on a swing pass. He attacked left and missed the scoop high off the glass. He missed a corner three. He missed a floater. He attacked left and scored with left over the big. He missed a runner.

Bryant -- -- The three ball wasn’t dropping tonight, which was unfortunate as he missed all five. He’s killed it in the G-League from three. Just haven’t seen much of it at the next level yet. Defensively, we had him matched up for a stretch against Marjanovic, who made Bryant look tiny. Really no match there. Bryant’s not built for that yet. Looking forward to a lot of work from him in the offseason and seeing him in the Summer League. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-8 shooting (0-5 from three) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He missed a three in transition. He dunked off the nice drive and dish from Caruso. He dunked in transition. He rejected a drive to ignite a break. Second Half: He missed a three on the pick and pop. He faked the handoff and swished the wing jumper. He missed a wing three. He airballed a break-rhythm corner three. He missed a corner three and got it back.

Walton -- -- Good year for Luke. The Lakers improved tremendously defensively, which says a lot considering just how young this team was. “I’m really happy with the progress we made. It was a special, fun year,” Luke said… As for the game: KCP came out after a couple minutes with a shoulder injury and Andre Ingram came in… Payton in for Hart…. Lakers up 9 when Zubac and Ennis came in for Randle and Lopez in the final minute… The Lakers led 39-32 after the first quarter. Neither team had a turnover… He started the Zubac, Wear, Hart, Payton, Ennis lineup… Lakers up 8 when Ingram came in for Hart with 8 minutes left… Bryant in for Zubac… Payton out with three fouls for Hart… Good job getting out in transition… The Lakers led 64-53 at the half… Payton and Zubac in for the Laker bigs midway through the quarter… Ennis in for Ingram, Lakers up 15… Hart on fire and the Lakers extended the lead to 20… The Lakers led 92-74 heading into the fourth… He started the Bryant, Wear, Payton, Ingram, Ennis lineup… Zubac back in for Wear… Ugly game down the stretch… Timeout up 10 with 1:41 left… The Lakers finished off the Clippers and the 2017-18 season…

Mrs. DB and Kids -- -- Thank you again for another long season of Laker games and more than a few schedule sacrifices. I know everyone’s grown sick of tedious commercials on Diamond-Z4s, Air Dragons, Western Bacon Cheeseburgers, Wing Stop, etc. that are a constant in the household all season long when these games are on. Thanks also to everyone on LG who tunes in game after game in this thread and all you regulars who post! The season seems so much shorter than the last few. That’s a good sign that things are turning around. Fingers crossed this offseason.

Really appreciate your write ups DB. Always puts a bow on everything after watching the games, or some great analysis if I missed them.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks for all of your efforts, DB. There's a lot of us that truly appreciate what you do.

We saw some promising growth this season. I'm especially enamored with Josh Hart's development. Just as you already alluded to, he's ready to start right now which really helps when we could be handing out over 65 million to just a couple players depending on how things play out in free agency. This summer should be interesting to say the least.

Thanks DB! This team is heading in the right direction! What a draft indeed! So many ups and downs this season. So many stories to tell. 24 different players scored for the Lakers this season! Wow.

In the end, 35 wins was a prediction several of us had, and for me it was definitely predicated with 'if healthy.' It's clear to me that this team can compete for playoff spots now if healthy, because the rookie learning curve is in the rear view mirror for our best players and the team that emerged plays north of .500 by a comfortable margin when healthy. With young players and sufficient cap space to pursue Max FA's. I'll take this as a successful season!

Thanks for all the work you do producing the best write-ups in basketball. Thanks to Mrs. DB and the kids as well! Enjoy the off season!

Another season of excellent recaps. They represent a lot of hard work and I appreciate the effort. They are a pleasure to read and often help me keep up with my team when life does not allow me to watch the game.

So until next season, thanks DB!

DB thank you for a great season. I don't think I missed any of your write ups.

That was a lot of hard work so I hope it was a labor of love.

Wow did Hart finish strong. He looks like a potential starter on a playoff team.

Body work: BI, Zubac, Bryant. Lonzo these guys need to all get stronger and they should all go with Randle to his trainer.

Gotta Resign Randle the team MVP and leader.

Team was fun to watch and if BI and Zo are healthy this is a playoff team.

Well it should be an exciting off season as the Lakers have plenty of options, more so than any team in the league.

So true!

Thanks, DB! For all the season and so many that there have been.
You have long earned your own badge of honour.

P.S. Good to finish the season with a W. Even if it is not worth much.

Thank you to you and your family DB! When I miss a game (or when I don't), I know I can come here for the best game recap there is! Have a restful off season.

This season left a good taste in my mouth...especially beating the Clips the last game! I'm looking forward to what the next couple of months have in store... The team has built a lot of positive vibes moving forward. It'll be interesting to see where the front office takes us and how effective the work is that the players put in.

Year in, year out DB you've been the best team analyst and reporter. Thanks for another stellar year. Finally, things are looking promising again.

Best to you and the DB family!
