Thought this was interesting...The company that owns Mall of America is considering building a second one in Canoga Park, in the former Aerojet Rocketdyne lot. It would definitely be cool, but they are just a few blocks away from the very large Topanga Mall. Guess we'll have to see what they do.

Unless this is a high end mall like the Americana at Brand, it will be pretty hard to succeed in the era of online shopping. They probably shouldn't copy the one in Minnesota completely since indoor malls are failing all over the country. |

They are failing in the bottom socio-economic half of America.
Usually in areas where a very large or a few large employers left.
Malls are becoming more places to eat, see movies and do stuff like skating rinks or virtual reality parlors than buy clothes, jewelry, books and toys.

Good Lord, as if the Valley (and this particular area) weren't getting crowded enough. What's next, high rises in SFV? |

yeah, indoor malls are becoming relics of the past.....being replaced with the open air mixed use models. Makes sense from the land owner and retailer.....a triple net lease which allows the retailer far more freedom, while limiting overhead for the property owner....and best of all, no more air conditioning/heating 1,000's of square feet of useless hallways, sitting area's, etc. Even in cold Northern cities this is becoming the norm.....the walkways are often covered in a way to prevent snow and rain....but still open. |

Indianapolis has an interesting setup where hotels, shopping, the civic center and the football stadium are connected by above ground walkways. They aren’t heated but are much warmer than outdoors. I attended a football meeting there a couple of years ago and could go from my hotel to the center and stadium without going outside. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |
