Report: David Fizdale agrees to deal to become New York Knicks coach

David Fizdale posted a record of 50-51 during one-plus seasons in Memphis.

The New York Knicks have agreed to a deal with David Fizdale for him to become their next head coach, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The contract is a four-year deal, according to Wojnarowski.

Fizdale last coached with the Memphis Grizzlies, where he posted a record of 50-51 in one-plus seasons. He was fired by the Grizzlies on Nov. 27 after a slow start to the season. Prior to coaching the Grizzlies, Fizdale was a longtime NBA assistant coach with stops in Golden State, Atlanta and Miami.

The Knicks dismissed their coach Jeff Hornacek on Apr. 12, one day after the regular season ended. During two seasons with New York, Hornacek posted a record of 60-104 as injuries made it hard for the team to build consistency. The Knicks have missed the playoffs for five straight seasons.

Fizdale would be the 29th head coach in Knicks franchise history.

Fizdale was let go from his last job because he didn't get along with Marc Gasol. Job one of the Knicks coach is going to be to get along with their franchise center.

You can make the case there are some similarities between Marc and KP. Porzingis will also be coming back from injury after Fiz has implemented a lot of things around not having a star center.

It's an interesting choice.

Trying to morph the Grizzlies was always going to strain a relationship with Gasol, and the toxicity reached a pivotal moment when, according to a source, Fizdale confronted the team about its lack of desire following a defeat. The coach went around the locker room asking each player if he believed he could win a championship. If they lacked belief, they didn't belong on the Grizzlies.

The younger players went along. Gasol, however, answered, "No." Then when asked for an explanation, Gasol replied, "We don't have the right leader."

Fizdale had a solid comeback, but it couldn't have helped his future with Gasol.

"I get it, you want Gregg Popovich, and I want LeBron James," the coach told his star player, according to a source.

Of course, we're getting the coach's story only here. Even if the coach did poll players individually as to whether they could salute the new flag (to win) and then went on to "leak" the exchange Gasol, Fizdale had know already he was doomed to fail instantly. Anyone having such an inflammatory sense of interpersonal skills - in a group setting - will usually struggle in aleadership role when he so badly misjudges the comparative strength and security of his position before establishing a winning pattern.

Even if Fizdale has great leadership skills, he probably won't get much accomplished in NYC. That team is in salary cap purgatory, and their owner is a moron.

Outside of Porzingis and maybe their French pick from last year's draft who could become a great defensive player, they have nothing really to work with longterm. 2 players aren't enough. They are still 3 good young players away at the very least. KP won't be back to 100% until 2019-20. I think Fizdale is in for a long ride like every other NYK head coach has been.

Not to mention theres only one Lebron and chances are he won't be coaching him. Those Miami days are long gone.

Fizdale is an outspoken civil rights advocate. MSG/Dolan are notorious for controlling the free speech of its players and especially staff members. Can't wait to see those fireworks.

Eh, it sounds like the Knicks are serious about chasing Lebron this summer. Who knows?
