I want to see Casey coach the Bucks. I want to see what he does with a star with real heart (and talent). I think he can turn them into contenders.

They did underachieve in the playoffs but DeRozan is the bigger problem with that team.

The way he plays, in today's NBA if you're not a Kobe/top 5 scorer level guy, you can't play that sort of game IMO.

What do you mean?

The sort of game DeRozan plays, I don't think it's so valuable as it would have been 10, 15, 20 years ago.

Not sure how you can blame one player in particular. How many chippies did JV miss? Or Ibaka's complete disappearance? etc.

DeRozan was benched the entire 4th quarter in game 3, and ejected in game 4.

He's the leader of the team and the best player and played the worst compared to his standards. He gets the brunt of the blame IMO

When a team gets steamrolled 4-0 in such fashion, it's never 1 player.

Key word being "brunt" of the blame, and it's squarely on his shoulders IMO.

What could he have done to beat the Cavs though? It was a systemic failure. LBJ did what he did. But to have all the other role players have a great series, that's on him too?

You're right I don't think they had enough talent to beat the cavs at all, but they did have enough to make it respectable. I don't necessarily blame him for the team losing, I blame him for the team folding up like a lawn chair.

Win a game or two, give 100% effort every night and Casey prob still has his job. But when your best player is checked out I don't blame the rest of team much for faultering.

the issues highlighted here are absolutely failures of the coach, and totally warrant firing.

The writing on the wall was when he benched Derozan.....in these cases the team has to choose between the coach or player....usually the coach goes because they are easier to dump.

I think Casey deserved to be fired not because of the loss to the Cavs(nobody with sense thought they would win this series)

But because there were stories of how LeBron knew the plays the Raptors would run better than the Raptors.

And how when they were 0-2 in the series how this is about playing for pride now. The series isn't over you can't say that as a coach and expect to be taken seriously.

That being said this isn't going to make the Raptors better either.

Casey may not be a good enough coach, but that team is stuck in pretender land. Even if Lebron moves out west this summer, they'll have to deal with the Celtics, Sixers and maybe even the Bucks for a while. I'm starting to feel like they should make major changes and just take their lumps. Unfortunately, that probably means cashing out on Derozan since he's not a true superstar as wolfpac and other mentioned in this thread.

saw a story today that Masai Ujiri went off on Casey in the locker room after game 3....which caused me to wonder why or how Masai Ujiri earned such a high reputation as a GM? I have looked at his overall resume, and I see nothing significant he has did as GM?

https://nba.nbcsports.com/2018/05/12/lebrons-game-winner-in-game-3-may-have-been-moment-dwane-casey-lost-his-job/

Quote:
LeBron’s game-winner in Game 3 may have been moment Dwane Casey lost his job

It wasn’t just one thing that led to Toronto Raptors’ president Masai Ujiri deciding to fire Dwane Casey after the coach had just led the team to a 59-win season and the No. 1 seed in the East. It was the slow buildup of a lot of things — most of them game-management related (not Casey’s strong suit) — that pushed Ujiri to make an unpopular and difficult decision.

However, the final nail in the coffin of Casey’s job may have been this play, LeBron James‘ game-winner in Game 3.

While on one side we should give credit to Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue for not advancing the ball to halfcourt for the inbound, allowing LeBron to get up a head of steam coming down the court and making it harder to double him, the fact Toronto went with single-coverage and now help on the play when it was obvious to everyone on the planet who was going to take the shot frustrated Ujiri to no end, reports Michael Grange of Sportsnet Canada.

Ujiri’s frustration with Casey’s inability to transfer regular-season success was rising, according to multiple sources….

According to multiple sources the confusion and subsequent lack of execution on the final play was another log on the fire. After the game, Ujiri stormed into the Raptors dressing room at Quicken Loans — just out of sight of most of the players but not out of earshot — and rebuked Casey in the coach’s office for failing to double-team James. Ujiri didn’t reserve his frustration for just Casey – he also tore into the officials in the hallway as well. But observers noted that the intensity was more than typical for Ujiri, who can run hot at the best of times.

It wasn’t just those things in this series. It was Game 2 when the Cavaliers started using the Kevin Love/Kyle Korver corner pick action that left Jonas Valanciunas in no-man’s land. Or in that same game when the Cavaliers started doing pick-and-roll actions that left C.J. Miles switched onto LeBron, and LeBron would just post him up and score (that happened five or so times in a row without an adjustment). Or in Game 4, when Casey went to Lucas Nogueira at center in a four-point game for no good reason. Casey was outcoached against Boston.

Does all that warrant firing Casey? Not alone. Ujiri just felt with this roster and this coach the team had gone as far as it could, and with both Boston and Philadelphia fast on the rise in the East (plus whatever LeBron decides to do this summer) the Raptors needed a change. Coach was a spot where change could be made more easily than the roster (which Ujiri assembled, and has its flaws).

The big question for the Raptors now: Who’s next? Who is that upgrade?

Not an easy question to answer. (Well, not Drake is the easy answer, but beyond that…)

Quote:
Dwane Casey’s classy goodbye letter to Toronto is fantastic

Firing Dwane Casey as the Toronto Raptors’ coach was not easy. GM Masai Ujiri felt it was necessary, that after being swept out of the playoffs again by LeBron James and the Cavaliers something had to change, but it wasn’t easy. Ujiri, at his press conference, was as emotional as you will ever see a GM after a firing — he and everyone around the Raptors genuinely liked Casey. It was hard to make the move.

Casey loved Toronto right back for reasons beyond basketball. His farewell letter, in the Toronto Sun, was awesome.

Thank you to basketball fans across this city and the country of Canada who supported the Raptors and welcomed my family with open arms during our seven years here. Thank you to all the fans who cheered us on at the Air Canada Centre while we built this program into a playoff contender, packed Jurassic Park even in the cold and rain, watched the games from home and offered their undying support as we traveled this road to relevancy together.

Thank you for teaching our all-American family the Canadian way. That being polite and considerate to one another is always the best way. That diversity is something to be embraced and celebrated. That taking the time to learn about each other’s cultures is the surest way to find common ground and understanding. Thank you for making our children feel safe, valued, and comfortable in their own skin. We cannot express how important it has been to build the foundations of who our children are as human beings in a country that shows through its words, actions and laws that all people deserve basic human rights, and a chance to reach their goals through education and hard work.

Well done.

Casey will land on his feet somewhere in the next couple of years, and that team will get a Coach of the Year calibre coach, and a great person.

The Raptors fired Dwane Casey on Friday.

Wednesday, he was named a finalist for Coach of the Year.

This looks awkward, but it fits Toronto’s stance. Even in his press conference following firing Casey, Raptors president Masai Ujiri said he believed Casey should win Coach of the Year and said he hopes Casey wins it.

Toronto can think both Casey did a good job this season and another coach would be better for the team going forward.

It’s a high-risk gamble to fire a coach so successful.

Sometimes, it pays off. The Warriors fired Mark Jackson then reached a far higher level with Steve Kerr. The Pistons fired Rick Carlisle then won a title and returned to the NBA Finals with Larry Brown. The Cavaliers fired David Blatt

Sometimes, it doesn’t. The Grizzlies didn’t get any better by dumping Lionel Hollins. The Bulls firing Tom Thibodeau for Fred Hoiberg didn’t solve all their problems. The Pistons firing Flip Saunders for Michael Curry hastened their downfall.

The Raptors aren’t content with just winning a lot in the regular season and stumbling in the playoffs every year. They were willing to fire a demonstrably good coach to raise their ceiling, and that’s fine. That doesn’t mean they must pretend the fired coach was no good.

Still, this looks funny. It’d be even more awkward if Casey actually wins Coach of the Year and accepts the award June 25 while coaching elsewhere or unemployed.

I actually respect this award more. Casey won the award voted on by coaches. As opposed to the "real" COY determined by press.

Phil Jackson has never won it.

Food for thought.

^Phil did manage to snag one for his 72-win team in 95-96, but point well taken on how the most of the other recipients have fared in the post-season.

Dude should have been fired years ago. The GM took advantage of a great opportunity to dump him without much backlash. Casey is not a championship caliber coach.
