Lakers’ front office indicates mutual interest in re-signing Julius Randle, but agent says their priorities are unclear
Rob Pelinka told The Times on Friday that the Lakers' front office is constantly in touch with Julius Randle's representatives, and there has been "a mutual exchange of interest and hoping that we can work something out for both sides."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Randle's camp is unsure of how mutual the interest has been.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Randle's agent Aaron Mintz said Saturday in response to Pelinka's comments: "We still have no indication of where Julius stands among the Lakers' priorities, or if he is a priority at all,". "We are looking forward to the marketplace in July, when we will get a clear picture of Julius' future."

The only way they won't re-sign Randle is if they get 2 max free agents to sign here. Since the odds of that happening are microscopic, there's a good chance he'll be back. An overpay could set them back though. |

It sounds like Mintz perceives (probably correctly) that Randle is Plan C for the Lakers. |

I took that article as in the interest isn't all that high, tbh. Pelinka seem to just be reading a script and saying the right things to not upset anyone. |

Sure. Instead of floating the general "we're going to match any deal" to deter teams from wasting their time, they need to be proactive with him in talks.
Otherwise, it's in a team's power to give the maximum escalator this year or next to combat LA's plan to play the FA market this year or next. If anything, LA needs to work on getting him to "agree" to a market value deal with escalators in the 3rd and 4th year instead.
Get him for the cap hold and if you have to stretch Deng or deal picks to get someone to take him so be it. I'd rather pay him an extra million or so in year one (not that it matters with the cap hold) than play chicken and let a team escalate an offer sheet. Even if true poison pill deals are outlawed, every dolllar will help in LA's scenario. |

In the scenario above, with Randle's cap hold and the likelyhood that Cousins won't get max money (even for one season), they can still squeeze in Paul George. To me, THAT is ideal if they can't get James. Even if they stretch Deng (rather than trade him with picks) they'd still have enough for a max deal next season. Though Shamet isn't athletic, he'd be a heck of a shooter that could contribute quickly as a shooter/PnR/trusted passer
Cousins 28/Randle 20
Randle 12/Kuzma 26
Ingram 32/Kuzma 6/Hart 10
George 34/Hart 14
Ball 32/Shamet 12/Hart 4
(sign a 9th guy with space exception, develop the young bigs, fill out roster with vet mins like Frye and 2nd rounder)
In the short term until Cousins is ready, I'd trust a Randle/Zubac/Bryant tandem with this supporting cast. |

They have to have room for his cap hold, 12.5M I believe. |

reading between the lines of JR's agent it sounds like they are not willing to be patient with the Lakers. If they want to sign JR as an over the cap player they are going to work those back channels to get their main target(s) signed as soon as free agency begins. _________________ (bleep) Kawhi |

I think the reality is that nothing will be definite with Randle until we know about how the 2 max scenario will play out... |

My instinct tells me Randle will sign with who ever offers him the most money and that most likely won't be the Lakers |

I hear ya, and in the long term they'd be flexible to sign anyone next year. Say they land Leonard and let Cousins walk. As another one posted in the Randle thread, the playoffs are showing how important Randle's ability to switch is.
2019:
Randle 32/Zubac or Bryant 16
Leonard 30/Kuzma 18
Ingram 34/Kuzma 14
George 34/Hart 14
Ball 32/Shamet 8/Hart 8
Not THAT would be brutal. If Randle could really work on getting positioning so the Embiid and Jokic types have to work harder, the supporting cast not only can switch on anything but SWARM the passing lanes. Talk about positionless basketball, every one of the guys are a defensive, rebounding and push the ball threat. We talk about it, but showtime would actually be back! |

This is more for one of the cap guys (Larry especially) but I believe that once Randle signs an offer sheet, the cap hold number is meaningless. So to fit him, they'd have to allow for whatever the first year number is. So when we talk about a team being a threat to sign him for say 18M a year, it could really be a 21M hit that you're trying to fit into your plans.
Hence why it's so important to not only keep lines open but be proactive with Randle. Instead of assuming he's taking whatever the biggest deal is, if he sees they are close to something special he may delay signing an offer sheet a day or two and still get the same big deal from the Lakers. It may not be such a big gamble to him, knowing that worst case scenario if EVERY somehow team spends all their money in 48hours...he can take the QO and be a UFA next year when more teams have money. |

Lakers should not overpay for the privilege of keeping Randle. He had a nice season, in a contract year, for a 35 win ballclub that was realistically out of playoff contention by December. |
