Teams will be unlikely to give him a long term deal at big money.
However, if we get LBJ, he is 100% not coming back on this team. If we only get PG13, then we likely keep Deng, re-sign Jules, and IMO we focus the rest of the cap on Brook.
IT would have to take the room exception for 1 year. |
That works...! |
That's if we get no LBJ. I'm fine with him, assuming he's healthy, returning for a cheap 1 year room exception after we take care of PG/Jules/Brook first. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

how would you know until you see how many games he plays and at what level
very risky...a min 1 year offer if he's serious about being a Laker
from Forbes today...
Isaiah Thomas
One Laker who may or may not become a former Laker shortly is Isaiah Thomas, who also went under the knife.
The diminutive guard is healing after hip surgery and pinky swears that he feels great.
I haven’t been able to really workout & get better in over a year! Finally pain free. This is going to be fun!!! #ThatSLOWgrind
— Isaiah Thomas (@isaiahthomas) May 16, 2018
Once thought of as a max player, his stint in Cleveland and subsequent surgery put in doubt his ability to garner a hefty payday.
My speculation is that he plays on a one-year contract to showcase his skills before heading back into free agency. That would make him a possibility to once again don purple and gold.

According to a survey by ESPN, Isaiah Thomas is the:
- 92nd most well known athlete in the world
- 13th most well known NBA player in the world, behind LeBron, Durant, Curry, Harden, Kyrie, Wade, Westbrook, Rose, Carmelo, Lillard, C Paul and B Griffin
http://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/23519390/espn-world-fame-100-2018
IMO that kind of brand power is important to the Laker organization. If we turn up in free agency in such a way that we don't have to release his apx $12 million cap hold I think there is a VERY good chance he is on the team next year.
Long live Isaiah "micro mamba" Thomas (mini was taken) _________________ Austin Reaves keeps his game tight, like Kobe Bryant on game night. |

Is the world confusing him with Kevin Hart?
Oddly interesting re: his fame, but I dont think the Lakers need IT's brand power. I mean... the Lakers? |

James Harden
Russell Westbrook
Stephen Curry
Kevin Durant
Dwyane Wade
LeBron James
Only 6 players in the last ten years have averaged more PPG than IT last season.
He scored 50 in the playoffs only a year ago.
And some of you still think he's not good enough to be Lonzo's backup?
I don't care anything about his branding... I care we get people who can score.
IT might not be the same... but even if he's 25% less than 2017... he still outscores everyone on our team.
For a one year show me contract, it's hard to see many better than him. |

Read through the thread and the free agent one... though resistance has been disappearing recently which is good.
LBJ still is first choice... but IT is a good backup plan if LBJ doesn't come |

25% of 2017 is just over 7 points.
But seriously, if he's not who he was on offense, unfortunately his defense is such crap, that his overall production becomes moot no? His greatness on offense in 2017 was what made people overlook his defense.
How much is this show me contract by the way?
BTW, I'm ok with him being a backup at a low price. |

Yeah I edited that... but what... 22 of 29 is still six points more than any of our youngsters. So even if you factor in a strong decline, he still would provide more offense than many being considered in his place.
I've been watching this playoffs with great interest... to see how Boston's athletic defensive perimeter players would cope with LBJ... and bottom line... the positionless player narrative just doesn't stop great offense... it will slow it down, and combined with offense like GSW, it can dominate... but the key is a combination of pure offense and switchable players.
Capela can't stop KD... Brown/Tatum/Horford/Rozier can't stop LBJ... Paul can't stop Curry...
You want a solid defensive foundation in place... but it must be accompanied by explosive not simply adequate offense.
Cleveland is somehow winning with JR Smith and Kevin Love... bottom line LBJ's offense overpowers even an athletic defense coached by Brad Stevens.
If we get LBJ, all of this conversation is moot. Looks like we already have PG... so that will get us to the next level if we can re-sign Brook.
However, if we don't... I'd take my chances on IT or even Boogie... as while they are capable of exploding for 30... most of the other candidates would rarely score 20.
Sign them for one year show me contracts if LBJ doesn't come. If they fail, we sign Kawhi next season. No risk experiment imo. |

I don’t think it has anything to do with laker fans not wanting him as a backup. I think most people wouldn’t mind him as a backup...HE doesn’t want to be Lonzos backup and he’s said it. |

Then we don't sign him... end of story.
All I'm saying is if he's open to it, and we don't sign LBJ... you take it. |

That's one qualifier.
The other is health.
You mentioned him being 75% IT.
We won't know if he is 40%, 70% or 100%.
I don't think we can treat that risk so casually. No one will know how healthy he will be. |

Totally agree. It's going to be slim pickins for him anyway. If we don't get LBJ I could easily see Magic offering a 2 year deal for $24 million, and team option after one year. IT can't demand anything from any team. He has to prove himself again and he knows the system here and enjoyed his stay so I can see this happening...If no LBJ. |

Even with a team option, it would be less. Maybe even in the room exception to MLE range. Dude just missed most of last season and had hip surgery. There aren't going to be many big money/long term offers. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

i hope we can bring back IT on a 1 year deal after we lock up PG, Randle, and Lopez. if we can someone get KCP as well, i think we have a solid team. might need to trade 2 firsts + 1 second along with Deng to clear room for KCP. that is a good solid young core
