As Danica Patrick told "Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night, she "has a thing for doing things for the first time as a woman." Add hosting the ESPYs to that list of firsts.

Patrick made the announcement while appearing as a guest on Fallon's show, just days before Patrick is scheduled to race in the Indianapolis 500 once more before retiring as a driver.

Patrick, 36, is the first woman to win an IndyCar race (it is her only career victory) and to lead the Indy 500. She later moved to NASCAR, and while she never won on the circuit (Xfinity or Cup series), she did become the first woman to win pole in a Cup race (the 2013 Daytona 500) and to lead the Great American Race.

The ESPYs, a made-for-ESPN event that brings together the sports world's top athletes, will take place July 18 in Los Angeles.

I predict the ratings for this broadcast won't even finish in the Top 5.

Danica is an example of when being a woman has it's advantages.

She's a woman in a male dominated sport. She's physically appealing and from what I've seen of her, she has a pleasant personality.

I don't know one male in the sport with 1 win who's garnered as much attention.

Not meant in a offensive way, If you got it, flaunt it!

I agree with you she's a novelty act that being said the host is rather irrelevant to this show. Although I did like when Manning hosted last year(Kevin Durant probably didn't though )

Didn't mean to sound condescending. Pointing to why she garnered so much attention without being a Richard Petty.
