Mental illness is a very real thing, unfortunately. Look at Robin Williams. It doesn't matter how much money you have or how famous you are or how many millions of fans you have. It can afflict anyone.
Mental illness (bleep) sucks, man. Lots of people with "perfect lives" killing themselves... Robin Williams, Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington... Now Bourdain. (bleep).
One of my favorite tv personalities, I love his shows. He has a down-to-earth attitude in dealing with different people. Seemed very honest too. This sucks. _________________ “Properly read, the bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived.”

So true. In addition, the accumulation of money and material possessions doesn’t fill all the holes within a person’s being even if they’re well balanced, mentally, especially when living a celebrity life. So many other factors at work.

Yep. Bourdain, Spade, Bennington and Cornell all had young children. I can't imagine the depths of despair that one must be feeling that would lead one to take one's own life and leave one's children without one of their parents. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

They often believe that their children will be better off. Obviously, suicide is not rational and its quite astounding to observe the distorted thinking which precedes it. These events should be a reminder to all of us that under the right circumstances almost anyone (including those close to us) can be susceptible to such distorted thinking and the extreme acts that can follow (against one's self or others). _________________ LakersGround's Terms of Service
Sad news. I loved watching his shows and he's the one that got me into food and traveling. The fact that he chose to commit suicide in a hotel room, by hanging, and while working says a lot about what kind of depression he must be under.
For those who can't understand why someone as rich and famous as him can commit suicide, remember that the grass is always greener on the other side. We, as average salary workers, would love to live the lifestyle we see on TV. But celebrities often face some of the same demons we do and arguably sometimes worst.
The guy always seemed depressed to me. No idea why. He was paid millions a year to travel and eat.
Depression doesn't care if you are rich or poor. It could be triggered by a number of different factors like a death of somebody you know, traumatic life event, life not going according to plan, etc....and it will effect everyone at least at one point in their lifetime.

I identified with him. As someone who has struggled with a few demons I could see them all over him, and admired his reveling in the moment and his own personality, everyone else he damned. It’s what made him so popular IMO. Favorite quote:
“Your body is not a temple, it’s an amusement park. Enjoy the ride”. That was him in a nutshell, including the heavy lingering scent of irony and depression. We enjoyed the ride Anthony. Wish it had been a bit longer. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel

In fairness, Robin had a horrible disease and was just entering the part where he was going to die a slow, awful death. I don’t begrudge him avoiding that. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain, suicide in such a short span. A smile can hide pain. RIP _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Wow.
He helped me to appreciate other people and their food and culture (and way of life) from the comfort of my own home. I always envied that he got paid to travel the world and eat and drink and meet new people. This sucks.
I have a bunch of episodes of his show recorded to my DVR. I never remembered setting them to record... But I'm glad they are there.
