I'm a golf addict now. Just finished up putting the finishing touches on a 3 day trip with my golf buddies to go down to San Diego and last night went out on a whim and played Super Twilight Front 9 and played the best golf of my life.

So I'm in full golf mania mode and thought it'd be fun to see how many other golfers (and I use the term loosely in regards to myself) we have here at LG and maybe have a place where we could talk shop and discuss our games and the golf world.

I’ve played for most of my life because my dad, uncles and their friends taught me and my cousins how to play. Handicap has been as low as 7, probably around 15 now as I don’t really put much time into practicing. I generally play now because I like the social element of being outside with my family and my friends, our regular group plays once a week and I’m the worst one, my brother plays off of scratch and golf is pretty much his thing that he does. I’m good with a wedge, and pretty erratic with the driver.

Been on a few golf breaks before, my uncle runs a golf course in France which is nice when we visit. I go to Portugal once a year with my football team too. I want to play legends course in South Africa, one of my bucket list things, the 19th hole at the end looks crazy. Only played once in America, was at the orange lake country club in Kissimmee, was pretty nice there.

^^^
Got introduced to golf by my Grandfather in Scotland when I was a tiny tike. He was a scratch golfer and respected at his club, so when I would go there with him and he'd show me how to putt or chip (I was a way too little to do much else), it was a big deal.

Many years later, I ended up going to boarding school in Pebble Beach, and my first dorm room was a stones throw away from the 17th tee of Spyglass Hill. My roommate was on the golf team, so in the late evening after school, we'd go hit around the links with his clubs and he give me some tips. Back then the courses would frequently be empty and as long as you didn't interfere with the real golfers or the greenskeepers, no one would care if you knocked around on the course.

I played goofy golf knocking around with my buddies at 9 hole courses up through college and then didn't play at all for 30 years. About a year and a half ago, my work friends convinced me to start going out to play with them, and so for the last year or so I have been truly playing golf in the formal fashion for the the first time. Been taking lessons and practicing on the range or putting green when I can. My overall handicap is still way up there, but I'm getting more consistent and can occasionally pull off a commendable series of shots to make par or birdie or just make a drive, chip or putt that makes the whole day. Getting close to putting the "hacker" label to bed.

I love golf. One of my favorites ways as a married guy to escape

Played a lot growing up, quit for my 20's and picked it up again a few years ago. Got the full on bug again. I was scratch as a teenager now I vacillate from a 2-4 depending on my focus and alcohol intake. Planning a trip to Bandon Dunes in December, golf mecca in America if you ask me.

Moses I also have played in Portugal, what a beautiful place!

As well it should be! You will not regret it. Tip from my uncle who lives nearby: Go in the winter, the rates are half what they are in the summer and the weather is just as unpredictable.

I found this to be true as I've been once both in the winter and summer. It really is one day perfect, then next awful. Its also always windy in the afternoons so play bandon and pacific courses in the mornings to avoid 30-40mph gusts that would make Scotland blush. Trails and Old Mac are further inland and not as susceptible so are better afternoon plays.

Finally make sure you get on at Sheep's Ranch. Its a little known part of the property that you have to make special reservations to play with the caretaker. They only allow one group a day so imagine having a course to yourself on the ocean with no one in sight. There isn't really a scorecard, you just find the tee boxes and create your own holes/course. The coolest thing I've ever done golf wise.

Been there. There are now four courses there, of which I think Pacific Dunes is still the most difficult.

I think I'm going to have to just stick to super-twilight from now on.

I had a 280 yard drive right in the middle of the fairway.

I had a 150 yard approach shot that stopped 2 feet from the cup.

I had a 40+ foot putt on a rolling green that I sunk.

I don't say this to boast, I'm just trying too figure out why a (bleep) golfer like me seems to play so consistently well in the evening.

Just back from my 3 day San Diego Trip with my buddies. 8 of us went down and played The Crossings on the way down. Fun course with all kinds of elevation, tough greens and zero forgiveness for wayward balls. Then stayed at Barona and played their course yesterday. Nice rolling hills course with lots of wide open fairways and long holes. And then finished today at Maderas, which was challenging as hell but a blast. Gorgeously maintained. Shot crappy over all, but had some great shots.

That situation on 13 for Phil at the Open today was crazy. It looked like a total out of control meltdown when he hit his put was still moving, but his “explanation” made sense. Try and minimize the damage by intentionally taking the two stroke penalty. I get why the purists are saying it was disrespectful to the game. But I totally understand the strategy and you can’t really blame the the guy for using the rules as they are.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he announces that he is withdrawing from the tournament in the morning. He's taking some public flak for this and he knows it. He can say something like his emotions got the best of him and that he never intended to disrespect the game. It's not like he's in contention anyway, and it will help to quell some of the small backlash he's receiving.

I don't think this would be something damaging to his legacy or anything, but Phil is very much about image. I think withdrawing would be the right move.

Pretty sure hitting a ball in motion is a two stroke penalty. Having foresight when to do that is gratis.

Eh, I don’t see the big deal. It’s part of the reason so many people hate golf.

I think you can make the argument that he knew what he was doing and that it was within that one rule where he was cheating the game, or whatever (I am too lazy to look back at the article right now, but I know it addressed it with specifically cited rules). Just given the blowback, I can see him just withdrawing to try to assure that he had no intention of dishonoring the game.

Also, the fact that he called the USGA tonight to say he'd withdraw if that's what they think he should do, well, it tells me that he's thinking about it.

Better odds: Phil WD's, or Kawhi is a Laker at the start of the season?

I hear you OL, but golf is truly supposed to be the ultimate gentleman's sport...not regard in to just self policing, but also in not doing "crass" things that are bad form.

It was within the rules sure, but I guarantee you Phil wishes he had the moment back as that was not his best moment.

I enjoy watching golf from time to time, but there is an element in the golf community that just gets stupid about this stuff. The course was a classic example of USGA stupidity, and Mickelson snapped. He didn’t save any strokes, no matter what he said. The ball would have kept rolling, he would have putted back up the hill, and he would have finished with a 7 or 8. What he said was telling. He wanted to get to the next hole. In other words, he wanted off the course. Hooray for the USGA.

The US Open is my least favorite of the majors. It can be magnificent, as was the case with Pebble Beach in the early 2000s. But the idiots at the USGA are just prone to doing stupid things. There was the brand new course near Seattle with no grass on the greens. We’ve had two fiascos at Shinnecock. There was the idiotic course when Daly hit his ball twice. Back in the day, there was Winged Foot. If the USGA could get away with it, they would put windmills in the fairways and anthills around the holes.

For the USGA’s sake, I hope that one of the big names wins this tournament. If Joe Bob Nobody wins a fluke major on a bad course, it would be embarrassing. Can you imagine something like this happening in another sport? Imagine the French Open committee deciding to install Silly Putty courts to make it more challenging, or Wimbledon deciding to use St. Augustine grass. The closest analogy I can think of at another major golf tournament is Carnoustie in the Van de Velda year, but that was a function of weather.

Actually, he should have been disqualified under rule 1.2 which states a player can not take an action to influence the movement of a ball in play in order to gain an advantage. A breach of that conduct is grounds for disqualification. What Phil did (according to him) was to exploit the rule about the two-stroke penalty in order to gain an advantage and save strokes. So by his own admission, he violated 1.2. Of course it has now come out that Phil didn't really employ any "strategy" when he hit that ball as it rolled. He just flipped out (as ChickenStu correctly stated out) in a moment of frustration and just reacted - no thought involved. He told the Marshal he had no idea what the penalty was, and to just give him whatever penalty was required. He also told his playing partner that he had no idea what he had just done.

As far as the "gentleman" aspect to the game. I get that some people feel it is too stogy for the game to take itself so seriously, but I have to say I like that aspect of it. As you say, you have to police yourself and others trust you to do so. I have a friend of a friend whom we play with on a regular basis, and he just has a total disregard for the proper etiquette. He'll hit the ball out of bounds at the 180 years mark and then take a drop in the middle of the fairway 50 yards ahead or instead of taking his one club length relief when against a man made obstruction, he'll just toss his ball out into the fairway . . . Not out of contempt for the rules or a genuine desire to "cheat". He just apparently doesn't care to stick to the letter of the law. Since we usually aren't playing for money, the rest of us will just look at each other and shake our heads rather than make an issue of calling him out on it and we make jokes about "Jarod Rules". But it's just frustrating when you are playing strictly by the rules and others aren't. I want my score to be my score, not what I wish I had shot and I hold myself to that. There's no joy in marking a par when you know you really had a double bogie because you had to take a drop or something, so I don't get why people do stuff like that.
