I'm moving to the Bay area soon and have no idea how people afford this. I've seen studios going from anywhere from the high $2,000s to over $4,000... And that's not even in San Francisco.
Is there some sort of backdoor to avoiding this? _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:

I'm looking at Oakland and Emeryville, but I think Emeryville is safer... What's your price range and what sort of apartment are you looking for? _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:
Rent in the Bay Area is absurd. Many people just end up packing as many people into an apartment. The only people who can afford to live there were either there before the dot com boom or millionaires.

I hope you looked at the prices and did your research because you really have to go far out to get anything under 2K. A friend of mine had to move to Modesto to find a rental for $1500 but her commute is one and half hr depending on the traffic(one way).

For a studio or just for a room? _________________ Damian Lillard shatters Dwight Coward's championship dreams:

Another friend of mine actually doing that in San Jose. He's single and hardly has a need for a roof over his head. It's not for everyone but if you can do it than that's a lot of money you can save.
Depends on where you’re trying to end up. I mean, if you’re living in east bay but working in SF, you’re gonna have a crap commute either way _________________ "Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are."
CC, the real answer at our age is that you need to split an apartment. Renting a studio apartment is, in my opinion, absolutely stupid. I live in Mountain View, and I pay $1600 for a fully furnished room (and my own bathroom). I'm proximate to downtown and the transit center (maybe a bad thing since you can hear trains).
I have a co-worker who pays $2100 for a studio apartment.
I had many friends go to Berkeley for undergrad, and in general you can split an apartment for around $900-1100. It's not ideal but it's not going to leave you destitute. You get your own room but might need to share a bathroom.
IMO at a younger age it's preferable to live with roommates anyway.

This. Sadly, getting a room in someone's house (or even a house specifically rented out to all professionals/students) is the way to go in this market, and there's no shortage of people you can find who will rent their place out like this on a month-to-month basis, which is obviously preferable for the tenant. I actually looked for in-law/side units attached to houses with a bathroom and small kitchen built in, which is also becoming a more commonly available option, and found one for $1,550 in Milpitas/north San Jose. For me, it was the best (possible) mix of price and privacy/comfort, since personally I got tired of living in a dinky room and having shared facilities. But that was just my personal experience, and you may be find a better arrangement out there...

$2k is fine. It would be $3k to live near work for me (assuming I get the job after interviewing later this year).

I lived in SF one year by SF State and moved to Daly City to avoid paying $2k+ for a 1 bedroom. Price was about 1.7k a month. Then, I spent 2 years in Half Moon Bay (45 minutes away from SF) and paid 1.5k for a 2 bedroom. Depending if you want to live in the city or don't mind the commute, price is still going up! Apartments in SF don't last a day within being posted. Long story short, I moved the heck out of that area! _________________ "He had eyes in his ears."

Can you really see Candycanes living out of a car like a hobo?
Well, it makes sense until he save up a couple mil to put down on a cardboard box in an alley. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel
