Scrubalicious… Not much to see here.
The Lakers quickly fell behind 10-0 to start the game. The Heat were knocking down three after three (seven in total in the first 10 minutes), and the Lakers trailed 31-19 after the first quarter. The lead extended to 19 by halftime.
Josh Hart didn’t have a strong game (they cut it short, as well), and they missed his impact. Alex Caruso tried to get the team more organized offensively, but there was little flow to anything the Lakers were doing (he needs to get some minutes in practice under his belt with the team).
Down 29 heading into the fourth, this became especially hard to watch. This was easily one of the least entertaining summer league games in years. Little of interest, and the Lakers fell 89-74. It was not even that close.
Now that I’ve sold you on the excitement of this one, here’s the player breakdowns.
Hart -- -- Quiet night. They didn’t have him doing as much as the previous game and he kind of disappeared anyway. We know what he can do, so no big deal. “The game was a little out of hand so we’d rather have Josh be rested,” Simon said. The Stats: He scored 1 point on 0-4 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist and 4 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a face-up elbow jumper. He missed a three on a kickout. He attacked down the paint, spun and drew FTs, he made one. He iso’d and missed the pull-up 17-footer. He stripped a big in the paint. He was fouled on a floater off the weave, he made both FTs. He missed a three at the end of the half. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.
Wagner -- -- “They punched us in the face and we couldn’t really find rhythm to get back in there,” he said. He had 8 points on 3-8 shooting in the first half and played some of the third before sitting out the rest of the game. Offensively, he sank a three, had a nice And-1 drive off a spin move at the three line and then score on an off-hand jumphook off a spin. While not much, at least it was a pretty well-rounded set of skills there. I’d really like to see the team running more. He had one pushout of a break, but that was it. Defensively, he’s really not good at coming off his man at the last second to challenge at the rim. He usually seems to be on the wrong side of those situations when he does so far this summer league. Some moments with good positioning and another good read for a steal. He wasn’t quite pushed around like the last game. It will be interesting to see how much stronger he can get between now and the start of the regular season. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-9 shooting (1-3 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards (2 offensive), 1 steal, 1 block, 5 turnovers and 6 fouls in 18 minute. He was a -18. The Action: He was stripped on a drive down the lane. He spun in the post and missed the turnaround fade short. He was called for three seconds on the short roll catch. He missed a three, short. He drained a pretty looking three on a swing pass. He grabbed a bounce pass on the screen-roll, spun and hit the off-hand (nice) jumphook. He gave up and offensive board. He swiped a pass and pushed out the break. He traveled on an up-fake and drive attempt. He missed a tip, got it back and missed the putback. He spun off the pressure D at the three line and scored an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He blocked his man at the rim. He choked a layup trying to ride it in off the two-man game. Second Half: Good position D to help force a bad kickout. He was stripped from behind to take away a sure dunk. He sized up Bam off the dribble, went between his legs a few times, attacked and drew a foul (then seemed to incite a tech on Bam or react to it after Bam said something). He missed a three off the pick and pop.
Mykhailiuk -- -- Maybe the only thing really worth watching in this one. He sank a couple of threes and finished well at the rim. He hit a great looking step-back from about 17 feet out after stopping on a dime – that was impressive. All of this was in the flow of the offense. He had one iso sequence where he missed a three, but other than that he took what was available. Easy to see how you could plug him into a game right now. We played him at the PF at times in this game. We can get away with that in summer league, possibly on small ball games at the next level, but I would think that would be rare for now. Defensively, he had some moments of positioning himself well off ball (had a couple steals as a result) and showed some good fundamentals in other situations. Definitely see his polish from playing four years. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-11 shooting (2-8 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -24. The Action: He missed a pull-up three working off the high screen. He took a kickout moving to his left and sank the corner three. Next time he took the kickout, he attacked past the closing D and carried it in for a layup. He attacked from the corner, used his body to shield and oncoming defender and scored the layup. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He missed an open wing three on a swing pass. He took a handoff on a curl into the lane and kicked to the corner for Holland to hit a three. Second Half: He attacked to his left, stopped on a dime and hit the step-back 17-footer. Nice job chopping his steps on the close out to force a pass, then a few seconds later he jumped the passing lane to swipe the ball and ignite a breakaway score for Caruso. He swiped the ball next time down, but then threw a pass behind his man on the break for a turnover. Poor challenge on a three on a hot shooter, got to be more in his jersey. He drained the three trailing the break. He iso’d and barely hit rim on a three, got it back on a relocation in the corner and hit the side of the backboard, fading left. He missed a corner three on an inbounds.
King -- -- Not much to this one. Scored in the paint for a his only hoop. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -21. The Action: He was blocked on a three in transition. Second Half: He sealed his man, took the high entry and had his layup goaltended. He missed a runner.
Rathan-Mayes -- -- Aggressive game and he led the team in assists, but really not showing anything that sets him apart. He’s able to get into the paint some, but once there you’re not sure what you’re going to get. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-11 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 5 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He broke his man down and scored a layup. He stripped a big in the paint. He got his man in jail and scooped a layup over the big. He missed a step-back elbow jumper. He set up a big on a drive and dish for a score. Second Half: He was blocked on a pull-up wing jumper. He missed a pull-up 18-footer. He put a man in jail and hit the runner (could have been an And-1). He hit Caruso on the break for the And-1 layup. He missed an elbow pull-up after working the dribble from one side of the court to the other. He forced a layup next time down and missed badly, then didn’t cover a man on D. He was rejected badly out of bounds. He attacked, drew the D and wrapped a pass around a defender to setup FTs. He sank a long pull-up on iso. Turnover trying to thread a pass. He probed off a screen and drew FTs. He missed a pull-up three in transition.
Caruso -- -- He came in from Cuba and got here this morning. “Wasn’t as sharp as he normally is,” Simon said. He was off the mark on a few passes and his shot looked pretty poor. Still, he at least provided some sense of competence out there in organizing things. Some scrappy D, as well. Need to give him a couple of games and practices with the team before analyzing anything. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-8 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, 6 turnovers and 4 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: Great play ripping the ball with both hands from his man, fighting for it on the floor and hitting a teammate with an outlet. He spun and threw a pass away. He got it back smothering his man on the defensive end. He broke his man down, attacked the paint and finger rolled in a layup. He hit Pope on an inbounds pass for a layup. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He drew an illegal screen on Bam. He stole a pass, but then gave it right back. Second Half: His pass on the two-man game was picked off. He scored a layup off the steal and pushout from Svi. He missed a three. Off the mark on an awkward looking floater. He missed a short runner in the paint. He swiped the ball, gave it up, got it back and scored the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He probed and his pass was picked off. He missed a three trailing the break. Nice switch to take a charge on the perimeter. He worked the two-man game then no-looked to a cutter for a layup. Off the mark in transition, turnover on the pass, points the other way.
Holland -- -- He went down hard on a finish attempt and was pulled from the game for a while, but later returned. He knocked down a couple of threes from the corners. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-5 shooting (2-2 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He sank a baseline jumper on an inbounds pass. Turnover trying to work the two-man game. He missed a step-back jumper against the clock. He attacked off the kickout and drew FTs, he made both. He sank a corner three off the kickout from Svi. Second Half: He attacked off the high screen and went down hard on the finish after getting hit by Bam, he made one FT, then sat. OC on a drive, turnover. He sank an open corner three off an inbounds. He missed a pull-up 16-footer.
Williams -- -- He seems to play with the right energy out there and was in on three blocks. The shooting looked awful tonight (must have missed a three by a couple feet to the right…and missed both FTs). The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-11 shooting (0-1 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 9 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He was rejected on the break with a weak finish attempt. He missed a jumphook, got it back shortly later and missed an open three wide right, yikes. He tried to throw a bounce pass when a lob was there, turnover. He choked a jumphook, got it back and missed the second one. He grabbed an interior feed and hit the jumphook. Not close on a baseline attempt. Sloppy outlet to turn the ball over in the backcourt, then he fouled. Second Half: Short on a putback jumphook. He finished a lob layup from Branch. He drew FTs on an interior feed from a guard, he missed both. He got a small on a switch, dribbled around him and dunked. Good help to tie up a man on a block. He spun and hit a jumphook.
Branch -- -- Quietly put together some quality minutes and led the team with the +13. He had a couple layups for scores (a nice athletic finish on one at high speed on the break). Not a lot else, though. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting to go with 5 boards, 1 block and no fouls in 12 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He lobbed to Williams for the score. He was blocked on a drive. He swiped a ball in the backcourt and scored a layup. He missed a runner in transition. Nice pushout off a board and he took it coast to coast for the layup.
Carrol -- -- Reasonable minutes, but not a lot that was noteworthy. His one three he sank looked Svi smooth. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-4 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and 1 turnover in 18 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a kickout three in transition. Second Half: He faked a man into a pass, then vacated he area, turnover. He attacked to his right and muscled in a layup. He sank a wing three on a kickout, good looking shot. They forgot about him, so he backdoored his man to take a pass and score. He attacked and kicked for a three. He lost the ball on a pushout.
Pope -- -- He knocked down a good looking three as his high point of the game, then got rejected badly trying to throwdown as the low point. Not a lot of action. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 3 boards and no fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He showed the ball on a finish and was rejected badly. Easy layup off an inbounds pass. Second Half: He swished a corner three on a kickout.

So where have Newman and Bonga been? I understand Bonga may be, being held out until after the moratorium passes, but Newman should have no restrictions like that. |

Svi is a keeper. Better all around skills than most of those designated shooter guys. |

The Summer Team misses a leader like Ball did last year..
They are just a bunch of dudes thrown together, with Hart trying to do too much... _________________ “Always remember... Rumors are carried by haters, spread by fools, and accepted by idiots.” |

Thanks DB! Missed the game. Food fun friends and fireworks.
Looks like a second good game from SVI. I have no problem picturing him coming off the bench against any NBA team and punishing them from outside.
My jury is still out on Wagner.
Looking forward to El kaBongo. |

Oh I didn't know there were SL T & R, yay!
Last night's game was not Yay.
Hopefully they catch a spark before actual (LV) Summer League starts. |

Carouso and Svi the bright points for the day.
If Williams could ever put the ball in the hoop he could become interesting. Nerves? |

Newman hurt a foot. They could use his shooting. I think he’ll be playing soon.
Bonga will have to wait until trade consummated and signed. |

Wagner will need to get stronger. I could see him maybe getting some PF minutes next to a rim protector like McGee. Skeptical he will be ready for C minutes. Got to work on his D. We’ll see how that comes along.
Svi seems almost plug n play right now off the bench as long as those shots keep dropping, which I don’t see why that would change. Don’t sell him short. |

In all fairness too early to tell. Hart got injured during SL last year and had minimal impact in SL. Was during regular season he started showing his chops. |

it will be hard to really judge Mo in the summer league. He's a role player who needs to be in a lineup with playmakers who take the attention away from him and set him up with ideal scoring situations. This summer league team doesnt have anyone like that. _________________ (bleep) Kawhi |
