PostPosted: Thu Jul 05, 2018 12:49 pm    Post subject: Damian Lillard to the Lakers? (Lillard Rumors, p. 1)

Just creating this thread because its coming up too often to just keep merging into the FA thread. Coming off Lillard's tweet the other day, lots of Lillard talk out there (although nothing of substance really sourced yet). Here's the latest talk -

------------------------------------------------

The Math: Without Trading the Entire Team (Except Lebron), Can't Trade for Lillard & Sign Kawhi to Full Max Deal in Summer 2019

The only way to trade for Lillard, while preserving a max slot for Kawhi in the summer of 2019, is where the Lakers dump every single player they have on contract in 2019-2020 other than Lebron - the trade for Lillard would have to be Deng/Ingram/Ball/Wagner/Kuz/Hart and our 2019 1st round pick.

$37,430,000......LeBron James (1)
$32,700,000......Kawhi Leonard (2)
$29,802,321......Damian Lillard (3)
$897,158...........Min Salary (4)
$897,158...........Min Salary (5)
$897,158...........Min Salary (6)
$897,158...........Min Salary (7)
$897,158...........Min Salary (8)
$897,158...........Min Salary (9)
$897,158...........Min Salary (10)
$897,158...........Min Salary (11)
$897,158...........Min Salary (12)
________________
$108,006,743

$109,000,000 (Salary Cap) - $108,006,743 (Salaries) = $993,257

For example, if you want to make the trade more reasonable (say Ingram/Ball for Lillard), this is how the math would look -

$37,430,000......LeBron James (1)
$32,700,000......Kawhi Leonard (2)
$29,802,321......Damian Lillard (3)
$2,164,680........Moritz Wagner (4)
$1,974,600........Kyle Kuzma (5)
$1,934,160........Josh Hart (6)
$897,158...........Min Salary (7)
$897,158...........Min Salary (8)
$897,158...........Min Salary (9)
$897,158...........Min Salary (10)
$897,158...........Min Salary (11)
$897,158...........Min Salary (12)
________________
$111,388,709

$6,266,667........Luol Deng (1 year $18.8m Stretched)
________________
$117,655,376

$109,000,000 (Salary Cap) - $117,655,376 (Salaries) = -$8,655,376

In a scenario where we trade Ingram/Ball for Lillard, even if we manage to dump Deng (as part of that deal or another one) without any salary coming back, we are still going to be about $2.4m short of being able to offer Kawhi (or any other 7-9 year player) a max deal. If we can't dump Deng, we're $8.6m away from being able to offer that third star a max contract. Because Ingram and Ball make more money than Kuz, Hart or Wagner, it only gets more complicated and less likely if both Ingram/Ball aren't sent off.

Here is the bottom line - the only way to trade for Lillard while giving a max deal to Kawhi and keeping any of our young guys is to trade for Lillard AFTER we sign Kawhi and fill the roster with some other players to use as salary ballast in a pre-2020 trade deadline trade after December 12, 2019.

Potential next season lineup -

Lillard
Leonard
LeBron
Kuzma
McGee

Triple L's

But ya, I'd trade Ingram and Ball for Lillard.

That's a super duper team.

But even without clown George McFly, that lineup at some point will win a championship.

Blazers dont like us either. Would they even be willing to trade him to us? Or they just gonna be like the Spurs and ask for unrealistic returns?

I called for lillard 1st. I said it. This is the list of players who can compete vs GSW other than bron.

1) Kawhi
2) Davis
3) Irving
4) Harden
5) Lillard

THATS IT.

Someone called me optimistic for predicting this will be our line up

PG.lillard
SG.PG13
SF.Kawhi
PF.Kuzma
C.Randle

Well guess what...we are not far off.

If we get kawhi for ingram, hart and save some picks to add to ball we can get lillard.

Lillard
Kawhi
LBJ
Kuzma
Mcgee

SICK!

for 2019, could have easily been:

Lillard (via trade) - not going to happen
Leonard (signed 2019) - good chance
LeBron (signed 2018) - done deal
Kuzma (drafted) - done deal
Cousins (Signed 2018) - missed the boat

Imagine that!

With that lineup, Shaq can come back for the league minimum and get another ring.

it is one or the other....trade for Lillard, and no money for Kawhi. Even if you stripped the roster clean of just Lebron, Lillard and Kawhi next year with empty roster holds.....they would take the entire cap....the rest of the roster would be a MLE and minimums. Have to shed Ball, Ingram, Kuz, Hart, Deng and Wagner.

I've been saying for a few days that Spurs may send Leonard to the Clips just to spite us, even if they don't have the assets to get him. I mean, if KL is walking next summer anyway, they don't have much to lose (other than their star player).

Portland, eh, I know they don't like us, but I feel like we'd have a better chance trading with them then we do SA. Especially if the offer is Ingram and Ball. That's about as good as they're going to get for Lillard.

Which leads me to, if Ball and Ingram are on the table, have we entertained that offer to SA? Or are they asking for more?

If Leonard ends up with the Clippers, I fear he may end up signing long term figuring it's still LA, why not.

Which doesn't mean we don't have options. KD, Klay, Jimmy Butler, all FA's next summer, assuming we don't make any trades this season.

TRUE. So what about ingram + ball for lillard and get kawhi in FA?

I’d take BI + a health Lilliard over a question mark (health-wise) KL any day. Likely we would not include BI in a Lillard trade, Lonzo will be the center piece.

would not have the cap space to sign him to a max deal unless we traded everything except Lebron and Lillard. Maybe he takes a small discount to keep Kuzma or something. Seems extremely far fetched.

How does the money work though? Only way the Lakers can trade for Lillard is with Deng or after mid Dec. when they can include their signings.

Ball, KCP, Rondo is almost what you have to offer.

Basically a third team probably needs to get involved.

KCP has an implicit no trade...he can block any trade this season.

I didn't forget them. I don't think a team with a center who needs the ball can ever become as fluid as the warriors. And Giannis doesn't have the off-ball ability needed to run a fluid modern offense. We are trying to build on offensive fluidity and speed and shooting.

Ball, Ingram, and one of KCP (waives no trade clause), Deng or both Rondo/Stephenson would work.

looking at the math, I'm starting to not like the Lillard trade. I'd rather go with Kawahi next year and most of our young core intact.

Are you trying to emulate the Warriors or beat them?
