Security did not recognize Jerry West at Summer League

Jerry West may be The Logo and one of the most iconic figures in NBA history, but apparently that still isn’t enough of an identifier for some people.

Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press reported on Friday that the 80-year-old LA Clippers executive was asked by security to clear out of a walkway near the court during Summer League in Las Vegas. Here’s the kicker: the security guard was wearing a pin with the NBA logo on it.

@ByTimReynolds
Security in Vegas is tough. They just asked a guy to move back out of a walkway near the court. The guy: Jerry West. Security guy is WEARING A PIN THAT IS THE LOGO THAT IS JERRY WEST AND ASKED JERRY WEST TO MOVE.

West, of course, has been a staple of the sport for several decades now, thanks to both his illustrious playing career with the Los Angeles Lakers and his second calling as one of the most successful front office gurus of all-time.

Regardless though, it’s obvious that West’s resume meant diddly squat to security on Friday night. Now the only question is if the security is tighter at NBA Summer League or at Angel Stadium.

Security: You're a barber? Whose hair are you here to cut?

Security probably thought he was a buffet eating tourist like at the end of the movie Casino. Little did they know he would beat the guard with a pay phone.

I wondered how much he cursed at the guy and pointed to an NBA Logo.

“I’m Clipper’s GM”

“This is summer league sir, not minor league”

I chatted with him for a minute or so behind the baseline -- must have been right around then. To be fair, he wasn't wearing his credential when I talked to him, and security has been tighter this year -- I had a briefing where they reinforced that everyone on my staff had to have credentials visible at all times.

I was even in one of my meeting rooms doing a quick walkthrough, and the security guard tried to chase me, saying "there's nothing in here today." I said, "I know, this is MY room for Summer League -- I made the schedule for it."

You should try to see if you can pull an Enrico Palazzo during the anthem at one of these games, Larry. You only live once.

a little off topic, but since LC is here...
Larry said a few years ago that he thinks the new CBA has been successful. I think at this point I'd be interested in a reconsideration of that.
