BUSTGA

I can see his length and vision, but he's slow of foot and mind, and can't shoot. Waste of a roster spot for this season

Just for a frame of reference. Bonga is a little more than two months YOUNGER than Ingram was at the time of being drafted. Lonzo turned 20 at the opening of his rookie season. Bonga won't be 20 for a year and a half.

Maybe we should call him the bizaro Ingram - BI : IB

He has potential but I really dont know why we didnt keep him stashed for at least another year when we are currently limited on roster spots.

We paid a good amount for this 2nd pick too. We paid nearly 7x more than OKC gave Charlotte and have up a better future 2nd round pick.

Bonga is not close to ready to contribute. He look like one of those guys
teams chose to leave abroad.

Now that he is here, he'll need a ton of PT, coaching, development, etc.
in the g league

Correct. Melton was closer to contributing.

We'll have to play "wait and see" with Bonga. Today
he's just raw and not at all ready any role
in the big show...Who knows, maybe Kobe & Magic adopt
him and make him a player....

Isn’t that what the g-league is for? Development.

Young man needs a ton of work but you can still see occasional flashes that caught the scouts eyes. Prefer they keep him in the g-league to be coached and developed instead of sending him back overseas.

What are the rules for retaining him? How long do they have his rights before they have to worry about him being signed by another team?

He's signed for 4 years, he's not going anywhere. I'm just stating the fact that we will not not see anything from this kid in a long time. His shot is eh, he's a TO waiting to happen, don't think his handles are strong, his body needs work
and he's pretty passive.

Raw material, sure, he has a ton but it'll be a while before we find out if he has that special "something" that makes him worth the investment.

I'd like to see him get more run with the starters. He can pass, but there's no one worth passing to.

honestly, if they do it right....I could see him rapidly developing and actually being much improved by next summer....maybe really contribute in two years. If I needed to, I would hire an additional developmental coach to focus on him in the G League this season.

You hope for the Giannis pace of development.

I actually was not a huge Melton fan, but I would have preferred him with this pick. But Bonga could actually be good if the Lakers invest in him. Had some great reads and drives last night but no one could knock down the shot. He looked engaged on defense which is all I ask for at this point lol

You guys know Bonga's probably not going to be good right away right? Yeah that guy is a project.

He’s our 35 year old project. I need a birth certificate. He’s not 18.

The cert will be in German and I don't think they fake those there. He does look older but some kids do.

Yeah , he is from Germany, not Indonesia, so no fake Birth Certificate there

Way to soon to make this kind of statement about Bonga. He is only 18 years old. Seems pretty quick to me for a 6'10" player. I have been impressed with his defensive effort as well, using his length to disrupt plays.

I like this pick a lot actually. We drafted for the future. He should be able to improve his speed and conditioning through NBA training and how many players have we seen learn how to make a jump shot? It is very possible and likely that his shooting will improve.

exactly. already said at the time we drafted him that i dont see a reason for him to go back to Europe. its a different game over here, and just training with NBA players and under NBA regimes will help him more than the 34 games (+ maybe 5 more, if his team makes the playoffs) he would play in the Bundesliga. he might even get 34 games here in summer league + G league + some NBA games as well, depending on how season goes

Bonga is recorded to be 6'8"-6'9" ish, but you're right, the kid is a long term
project the FO decided to place a beat on. Bonga is signed to a 4 year contract which to me means this is a gamble the FO is willing to invest behind.

We should all be good with that vision. We really don't need him now but 12-18
months from now this could be a different discussion; good or bad.
Me? I'll let the FO do what they need with Bonga and we'll see.

Yup- IMO this is a contingency plan for the FO in case we end up trading away some of our future picks to move a Deng contract, or trade for Leonard.
