Pyramid Song by Radiohead.

It sounds like one's soul preparing to depart from the body en route to the infinite.

I couldn’t begin to count or distinguish.

Music (at least really good music) triggers so many emmotions across the board and can do so differently depending on the timing and the mood . . . And most importantly based on the memories they trigger.

For me, it’s not really the sad or emotional pieces of music that bring a tear to my eye. It’s the pieces that strike a note nostalgically or happen to be perfect for the very moment I happen to be living in at the time.

Recently, we had the passing of a truly great blues guitarist (and otherwise), songwriter, and vocalist, Danny Kirwan of (almost) the original Fleetwood Mac.

I have always liked this song of his, but now it is far more moving:

Dust (When we are dust, when we are dust)

Goodbye Danny.

Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 - the piece that gives pianists cold sweats & nightmares; absolutely stunning!

Been listening to more Jazz standards lately.

Beatles Yesterday , lot of melancholy in those Fab Four hits..

Bunch of the Carpenters songs in the 70's had that lonely/depressed vibe (Goodbye To Love, Rainy Days and Mondays)

And if you go Gospel...

Jennifer Knapp Hold Me Now (a woman mourning her great sin)

Plumb Taken ( inspired by a young girl who died from cancer)

Petra Judas Kiss (rocking old school with conviction)

This was sung at the funeral of a distant acquaintance

I felt nothing during the eulogies or the burial, but the song made me a mess.

That said, I am reminded that there is one song that pretty much gets me a little misty whenever I hear it and regardless of context or mood - in a good way.

"If I Ever Leave This World Alive" by Flogging Molly.

The lyrics and the upbeat and joyous tempo come together very well to send an empowering message about our own mortality.

My family knows full well that this song needs to be played at my memorial or else there will be problems.

If I ever leave this world alive
I`ll thank you for the things you did in my life
If I ever leave this world alive
I`ll come back down and sit beside your feet tonight
Where ever I am you`ll always be
More than just a memory
If I ever leave this world alive

If I ever leave this world alive
I`ll take on all the sadness
That I left behind
If I ever leave this world alive
The madness that you feel will soon subside
So in a word don`t shed a tear
I`ll be here when it all gets weird
If I ever leave this world; alive

So when in doubt just call my name
Just before you go insane
If I ever leave this world
Hey I may never leave this world
But if I ever leave this world alive

She says I`m okay; I`m all right,
Though you have gone from my life
You said that it would
Now everything should be alright

She says I`m okay; I`m all right,
Though you have gone from my life
You said that it would
Now everything should; be alright
Yeah should be alright

I rarely hear anything new but I heard this song and I loved it. Their first album isn't even out and they have no Wikipedia entry yet. My guy Jonathan Davis in it. Not everyday you hear a song about cannibalism with a super glue commercial in the background and a chorus of, "the dog food looks good enough, good enough to eat."

Country singer Jay Allen wrote “Blank Stares” about his mom’s battle with Alzheimer’s. They showed a clip on the news of him singing it while hugging his mother on stage. Having issues with my own mother, it brought me to tears.
