No. 1 Seed… Josh Hart has been taking it to teams consistently in Vegas. Tonight was no different.

He got the Lakers off to a strong start with 18 points in the first half. A few minutes into the second half, they stretched the lead to 25.

But once they hit the 75 point mark, they went cold. The Knicks went on a 17-0 run (eventually a 34-6 run) and by the time the third was over, the score was tied 78-78 and the Lakers lost all momentum. This was the first (and only) quarter the Lakers have lost so far in Vegas.

They brought back Hart to put out a fire on Knox. A subsequent 16-0 Laker run by the starters, and they cruised to the 109-92 victory over the Knicks.

The win wasn’t without a potential loss with Moe Wagner going down with an ankle and knee injury. He will be reevaluated tomorrow.

By dominating and winning as many quarters as they have, the Lakers will be the top seed for the Summer League playoffs to try to defend their title.

Hart -- -- Just consistent impact ball from Hart. He’s draining threes, but also getting to the rim with regularity. He snaked his way through traffic on the dribble a number of times for scores at the rim or fouls. All those FTs showing that he’s doing a great job seeking out contact. He had an attack to his left across the lane that hammered down over a defender with his left. One of the better highlights of our summer league action so far. This one definitely showed the improvements in his all-around game. Defensively, he was his usual strong self there, as well. When Knox got going, we brought him in to put the clamps on. “I told Miles, ‘Just put me in, I want to go guard him,’” Hart said. Once the starters came back in that was the end of that. The Knicks were stuck on 84 points forever. Hart has averaged 23.3 points, second in the summer league by 0.7 points to Josh Collins. Magic had high praise for Hart on the “Connected With” segment on Spectrum. Pelinka said LeBron also brought up Hart to him. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 8-16 shooting (4-12 from three, 7-10 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +31. The Action: He cut through the D in transition and scored a layup. He airballed a three, looked hit as he went up. He swished a step-back wing three. He battled for a rebound, going to the floor to control on it on one end, then attacked off the three line on the other and threw down with his left hand. He drilled a three right in a defender’s face. He swiped a pass at midcourt, jumping a passing lane, then got knocked over in transition, he made one FT. He missed a step-back fading three. He missed a wing three off the catch. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made one. He sized up a defender, attacked to his right off a crossover and had his layup goaltended. He fumbled a pass, then decided to slither through the D off the dribble and score a layup. He swiped a pass on the other end and pushed out the break. His three was blocked, he got it back and banged heads with another defender, he made both FTs with a plug in his nose. Second Half: He drained a wing three on a kickout. He hit the side of the backboard on a tough, twisting corner three on an inbounds. He got it back and decided to hit Ayres under the hoop instead for the score. He missed a three straight away. He snaked through defenders, sought out contact and drew FTs in the paint, he made one. The D sagged off him so he swished a deep wing three. He was wrapped up on a layup attempt after attacking the paint off a Caruso missed dunk, he made both FTs. He swiped a pass on one end, but missed a three on the other. He missed a wide open sideline three.

Wagner -- -- He got his knee banged and stepped back awkwardly to twist an ankle and his knee. He came back later in the first half after getting his ankle taped, but he didn’t start the second half. They added a left knee strain to the ankle sprain diagnosis. The Lakers have a day off, but I imagine they don’t play him in the next one. Would have liked to see him out there longer, especially against Knox. Not a lot of highlights in this one. While his shot and scoring hasn’t been consistent, there have been a couple of consistent things to his game. First is his excellent hands when guards are attacking on the dribble. He’s surprising them with his reach as they come at him and it’s resulted in a few steals. Second is his ability to move his feet and get around the post to swipe post entry passes. Both of those areas he showed again tonight and we’ve seen every game. So picture now, it’s regular season and one of our bigmen goes down with an injury. If it’s JaVale, we have to lean on Zu and Moe at the C for big minutes. Last year, we could rely on Lopez, Randle and even Frye before getting to Zu and a rookie. It will be interesting to see if that’s how we head into the season. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 9 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He choked a layup on a step through. He missed a wing three. He stepped around the post and swiped a pass. He stepped back to get behind the three line and stepped right out of bounds, turnover. Layup off the weave when Caruso found him. Poor position and he gave up a putback dunk. He gave up another offensive board. He was fouled on a jumphook in the post, he made one FT. He worked across the lane and hit the lefty jumphook. Great job with the hands again to strip a guard in front of him. He then dunked on the other end when Svi found him in transition. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Mykhailiuk -- -- Cold start for Svi, but he heated up in the second half when we started punching back against the Knicks. Every time he shoots it, you think it’s going in. Just a pure stroke. Again, some excellent moments on D, whether it’s staying in front of guys trying to create or if it’s rotating to tag a role man and disrupt a set. He’s checking the boxes there. If you can rely on him to make the right reads defensively, you’ve got to get him minutes. Once he starts building his knowledge of the counters and reads in the offense, look out. Despite his youth (turning 21 last month), his four years in college have really developed some strong fundamentals within the team game. Really glad they signed him to three years. We’re going to need guys who outperform their contracts during the next few years. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-12 shooting (3-9 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 25 minutes. He was a +25. The Action: He airballed a three, getting touched or blocked on the way up. He couldn’t finish a layup on a drive. He got it back off a Wagner steal, attacked in transition, was blocked but hit Moe for the dunk. He missed a sideline three. Second Half: He swished a wing three on a swing pass. He hit Ayres in transition for a layup. He got the bench on its feet on iso D nearly forcing a turnover. He swatted a jumper. He missed a wing three. He drained an early offense wing three working off a high screen. He swished a wing three off a swing pass from Caruso. He missed an open wing three in transition next time down. He iso’d, crossed over and missed a long pull-up jumper. He missed a corner three. He got tapped on a wing screen coming off the pindown.

Caruso -- -- Really getting into a rhythm now with the team on both ends. He led the team with 10 assists and just 1 turnovers. He was orchestrating the offense and setting the table all game. I might be more impressed, however, by the D. He’s just always getting after it out there and ending up the floor for loose balls or after taking a charge. Love that. Excellent hands and anticipation all game long. He couldn’t quite finish a steal and throwdown attempt on the break that probably would have been his highlight play of the summer. He had the team clicking at a high level today as seen in his +41 while on the court. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 10 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +41. The Action: He whipped a pass off the weave to Wagner for a layup. He flipped a pass out of bounds on a poor kickout. He attacked off the screen and drew FTs, he made both. Good position on D to deny a drive and force a turnover. He missed a 70-foot chuck at the buzzer. Second Half: He kicked out to Hart for a wing three. Nice bounce pass to Ayres for the dunk. He probed the paint, stopped and was fouled on the pivot/attempt, he made one FT. He snaked through the D and scored a layup high off the glass over the D. He lobbed to Ayres out of a timeout for a dunk. He attacked in early offense and no-looked to Ayres for FTs. He took a kickout from Hart and quickly swung it to Svi for three. He jumped a passing lane for a steal but missed the breakaway dunk. He attacked off the weave and set up Ayres for the dunk. He dove to the floor to knock a ball off a Knicks player, but didn’t get the call (too fast for the refs). He stepped in on help D and took a charge. He attacked and kicked to Williams for a corner three.

Williams -- -- He scored a couple big buckets when the Lakers were trying to stop the bleeding. Those helped turn momentum around when we needed them. Nice to see him have an impact in a key part of the game because he’s been a bit invisible at times. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-5 shooting (1-2 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 block and 6 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: Nice help D challenge to force a miss. He fouled a three shooter. He drew FTs on a setup in the paint, he made one. Second Half: He missed a wing three with that funky shotput shot. He airballed a floater. He attacked right, spun the other way and finger rolled in a layup. He attacked off the three line to his left and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He sank a corner three on a kickout.

Bonga -- -- What’s German for turnover? Yikes. Another 3 tonight in just 11 minutes. Some questionable decision making in this one by Bonga. I thought when we signed him it would be a draft and stash, and while we may certainly be wishing that right now, thinking about it more…draft and stash doesn’t make as much sense as it used. Now that we have a couple two-way contracts that effectively stretch the roster, it makes more sense to bring a guy over so that you can personally work on player development. It may not make as much sense in our current situation where we are trying to clear every dollar for max contracts, but I can see some logic in it. Hopefully, he can iron out some of these mental mistakes and his confidence will pick up as a result. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a -22. The Action: His first touch, he pulled down a missed FT, tried to push out and was picked by the freethrow shooter for a dunk (never seen that before). He attacked off the three line and drew FTs on a floater, he made one. Second Half: He took a pass cutting under the hoop and threw it away. He attacked the paint and hit a runner. He tried to dribble through a defender and was picked at the end of the quarter for a score the other way.

Rathan-Mayes -- -- Ball was sticking in his hands a little bit. But to be fair, he was feeling it in the second quarter from the perimeter. He’s definitely got some scoring ability. He needs to find the right mix of keeping the offense flowing and being a threat himself. Didn’t seem to be there tonight and comes and goes. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-8 shooting (1-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He stripped a man in transition D to get a stop. He started the offense too early and it allowed the Knicks time to get a score at the end of the quarter. He iso’d and hit the pull-up 17-footer. He took an inbounds and hit the corner jumper. He sank a step-back wing three next time down. He whipped a no-looker to King rolling for FTs. He missed a pull-up 19-footer in early offense. Second Half: He missed a wing jumper. He drew FTs on a drive, he made one. He was swatted on a drive. He missed a two-for-one chuck from three. He attacked baseline and scored a layup.

Ayres -- -- He got the start in the second half for Wagner and produced. He didn’t miss a shot, although he did fumble away what looked like it might be a sure layup off a pass. A lot of his points were off some excellent work by Caruso, so consider that when evaluating. Caruso was putting the ball in his lap in scoring position consistently. He finished, though, and he does set a strong pick which makes things easier for Caruso, as well. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 7-7 shooting (3-3 from the line) to go with 4 baords, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +37. The Action: Illegal screen, turnover. He secured a pass under the hoop and scored a layup. Second Half: He dunked off the bounce pass from Caruso that found him rolling. He scored an And-1 on the break when Svi set him up, he made the layup. He threw down a lob out of a timeout. He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Caruso, he made both. Hart spotted him in the paint for a layup. He threw a pass away. He fumbled away a layup in the paint. He threw down a putback jam at the front of the rim. He dunked off the drive and dish from Caruso.

King -- -- He had 13 points on 3-4 shooting in the first half. He was showing the complete came, working on ball, off ball, attacking for scores, hitting jumpers. Just a very well rounded offensive game. He’s been one of the teams more consistent scorers. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 4-9 shooting (1-3 from three, 6-7 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: Off-balance force in the lane and he missed. Nice read into the paint to Ayres for a layup. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made both. He made a tech FT. Alert off ball cut and he drew more FTs, he made one. He stepped on the sideline on a push off, turnover. He was fouled on a roll to the hoop for FTs, he made both. He attacked off the three line to his left and scored a layup. He drained a deep three in transition next time down. He attacked in transition and scored with his left. Second Half: He missed a deep three. Wow, sweet crossover from left to right to blow by his man for a score. He forced up a miss on a turnaround on iso after pounding the dribble. He missed a corner three. He attacked a crowd and was blocked.

Holland -- -- Not much action in this one and for the most part, not a great game. He got his one bucket on a curl into the paint for a layup. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board and no fouls in 11 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He was blocked on a corner three. He curled into the paint and scored a layup before going down. A little OC on a drive and he missed the layup after a couple pivots. Second Half: He missed a short one in the paint.

Carrol -- -- Only a minute of play but certainly aggressive. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-1 from the line to go with 1 offensive board in 1 minute. He was a +3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He was blocked on a jumper, got it back, attacked and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed a sideline three.

Pope -- -- In for a minute and he made a couple FTs. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-1 shooting (2-2 from the line) in 1 minute. He was a +3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He was fouled for some reason with 4 seconds left for FTs, he made both.

Branch -- -- No notes. The Stats: He had 1 board in 1 minute. He was a +0. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

I know it's supposed to be "only summer league" but last year the Lakers wanted and even needed to win. This year I get the sense we want to do the same (win the championship) to continue the momentum of a new culture and the hype of the new look Lakers

Thanks DB! Very frustrating game after Mo went down and the second unit came out, watching a 25 point lead evaporate as fast as it did.

But what a fun comeback when Hart, SVI, Caruso, Ayres and Williams took the floor! Good times.

Really would have liked to see Wagner play longer against Knox. Wagner hasn't just been an adequate defender, but a plus defender. It's been pretty surprising. Posted this in Mo's thread - here was the play by play for Knox v. Mo this game before Mo got injured:

1st Quarter
9:47 Kevin Knox misses 12-foot two point shot 0 - 0
9:33 Moritz Wagner misses driving layup 0 - 0
8:56 Moritz Wagner defensive rebound 0 - 0
8:51 Moritz Wagner misses 26-foot three point jumper 0 - 0

8:36 Kevin Knox bad pass (Moritz Wagner steals) 0 - 0
8:31 Moritz Wagner steps out of bounds turnover 0 - 0
8:08 Moritz Wagner defensive rebound 0 - 0

7:53 Kevin Knox steps out of bounds turnover 2 - 0
7:38 Moritz Wagner makes layup (Alex Caruso assists) 4 - 0
6:26 Kevin Knox misses driving layup 7 - 3
6:26 Moritz Wagner shooting foul 7 - 3
6:12 Josh Hart bad pass (Kevin Knox steals) 7 - 5
5:45 Kevin Knox misses 28-foot three point pullup jump shot 7 - 7
5:25 Moritz Wagner makes free throw 1 of 2 8 - 7
5:25 Moritz Wagner misses free throw 2 of 2 8 - 7

5:23 Kevin Knox defensive rebound 8 - 7
5:11 Kevin Knox misses 20-foot jumper 8 - 7
4:26 Moritz Wagner makes 4-foot two point shot 12 - 9
3:49 Troy Williams lost ball turnover (Moritz Wagner steals) 12 - 12
3:40 Moritz Wagner makes dunk (Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk assists) 14 - 12
2:56 Kevin Knox misses 27-foot three point jumper 16 - 12

Summary: Wagner - 8 Min., 7 Pts (3-5), 2 Rbd, 2 Stl, 1 TOs; Knox - 8 Min., 0 Pts (0-5), 1 Rbd, 1 Stl, 2 TOs

Knox v. Wagner: 8 Min., 0 Pts (0-5), 1 Rbd, 0 Ast, 1 Stl, 2 TOs
Knox v. Field: 25 Min., 29 Pts (9-17), 8 Rbd, 2 Ast, 0 Stl, 5 Tos

Pretty sure that it’s “Bonga”.

Thanks DB

Hart is a man among boys. He may be our best SG this year on the big team.

Bonga is playing with the end of the bench guys and just seems lost out there.

Miles Simon has done a nice job given the opportunity to be head coach.

Thank you for correctly typing this. It seems that it is much more common for people write "to try and". It is nice to see someone do it correctly.

Thanks DB! I'm kind of torn on whether I want us to play the SL Tourney with a full deck. Without Moe or Hart there isn't much to look at and we probably lose every game. But the chance of injury for Hart and Moe's injury being re-aggravated are unnecessary risks.

Was wondering that myself. I hope we haven't given up on a guy we signed to a 2 way already.... Especially when the SL bench consists of Holland, XRM, Branch, and Bonga
