Staying Hot in Vegas… With Wagner sidelined for the Lakers and Gilgeous-Alexander out for the Clippers, they took to the floor.

The Lakers pulled out to an early lead, locking down the Clippers to just 4 points for a good chunk of the first quarter. It took the Clippers until the 1:28 mark of the first quarter before they scored more than 4 points.

In the next quarter, the lead was trimmed slightly as the Lakers lost just their second quarter of the Summer League. That was pretty much it for the Clippers as the Lakers controlled the game the rest of the way.

Led by Josh Hart and Svi Mykailiuk, the Lakers continued their win streak. Hart added another 20 points, Svi with 15 on just 7 shots to go with 4 assists to help the Lakers to the 82-69 Laker win.

Hart -- -- Hart continues his consistent Summer League domination. Strong, physical two-way ball on his way to another 20-point game and victory. He’s doing a lot off the dribble, whether it’s hitting pull-ups or sizing up defenders and attacking. He’s been doing a thing where he gives up the ball, gets it back about 35 feet from the hoop and quickly goes to work off the dribble. I think this is to work on his general explosion and change of pace with the ball in his hands. He was 4-4 from the line, as well. I’m hoping he’s going to show growth there this season as we need FT shooters badly. (The team tonight was 19-21 from the line.) He mixes it up quite a bit and seemed to be chirping a bit at various opponents. He had some smothering defensive sequences against Thornwell. Later in the game, he chucked Thornwell to the ground on a baseline screen and got Thornwell to commit a tech late in the game. One of the things that Magic/Rob talked about was how quiet the locker room was last year. They wanted guys like Rondo and Stephenson to help give the kids a bit more of that edge. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-16 shooting (2-6 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 2 turnover and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +21. The Action: He missed a wing three. He attacked hard to his left but missed the turnaround in the lane. He smothered his man on iso D to force a brick. He worked off the high screen to his right and knocked down the pull-up three. He missed a step-back three, didn’t quite pull it up cleanly as he went into his shot. He clanked a pull-up wing jumper coming off the screen. He was blocked from behind on a drive. He curled into the lane off an inbounds for layup. He jumped a passing lane, swiped it and took it the distance for a dunk. He attacked off the three line and was irked at a no call on the missed layup. He curled off the screen and attacked for a strong lefty layup. Second Half: Nice help D to force a turnover in the post. He or Svi stripped a ball on a reach, I’ll give it to Hart. He swished a pull-up three when the D went under the screen. He took a handoff, attacked down the paint, jumped off his right around the D and finished with his right. Quick attack in transition off the pass from Svi and he scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed a sideline three. He missed a deep three. He gave up the ball, got it back and attacked off the catch for FTs, he made both. He airballed a step-back wing jumper. He charged on a drive in the paint. He sank a tech FT. He shuffled to his left to defend a drive and then blocked the layup attempt.

Mykhailiuk -- -- Efficient, well-rounded impact ball from Svi. When he had the ball, good things happened. In fact, he should have been even more involved on the offensive end. He showed the usual sniper ability, but also the creativity off the dribble to get in the lane or sink a nasty step-back after a couple between-the-leg dribbles. “I was like, ‘What the hell?’ Okay!” Hart said watching that. My favorite sequences might have been him setting up teammates off the dribble. Just very well-rounded and polished ball. You could see vets like Stephenson on the sideline looking impressed with both Svi and Hart in this one. “Svi more than just a shooter,” Kyle Kuzma tweeted during the game. So, we picked him at 47. I know last year people seemed to be in disbelief a bit about what Kuzma was doing in the Summer League. Then they were in disbelief for a while in the regular season. Svi might get that a bit, too, but to a lesser extent. Now, don’t get me wrong. He’s maybe making half the impact Kuzma did last Summer League, but he easily looks like a first rounder. Our playmaking isn’t the greatest in Vegas. Put him around guys who collapse the D or find open shooters and see what kind of numbers he can put up. We’ve got him on a three-year cost-controlled contract. You need guys who outplay their contract, and both Svi and Hart are showing that. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-7 shooting (1-3 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +17. The Action: He sank a wing three off a catch and shoot. He attacked off the three line on iso and scooped in a layup. He curled off the high screen into the middle of the lane, drew the help D and then hit Ayres for the dunk (awesome). He pulled down a board, pushed it up, ran the screen-roll and kicked to the corner for three. Great help D rotation, he went vertical and got the stop at the rim. He attacked the paint hard and drew FTs, he made both. He finished a slightly late lob pass on the break. Second Half: He missed a corner three. Change of speeds and he blew past his man for a reverse. He missed a three off a ball fake. He grabbed a board, pushed it up and hit Hart on the opposite side of the court for the And-1 layup. He pushed up the board, iso’d, went between the legs to his right, back between them to the left, stepped back and hit the 21-footer (umm, wow! Small foot shuffled but they’d never call that because it happened so fast…just killer). Out of bounds on a baseline pass to the opposite corner, turnover. He bodied up a man in the post and forced a miss. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs at the rim, he made both.

Caruso -- -- Not as clean a game as AC would have liked with the 6 turnovers. Some of those were definitely fouls without a call. But he led the Lakers with 7 assists and once again provided strong D to help shutdown the Clipper attack. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-6 shooting (0-2 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 7 assists, 2 steals, 6 turnovers and 4 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +20. The Action: He airballed a pumping three up against the shotclock. He swiped a ball but couldn’t control it. He forced a pass on the pick and roll, turnover. Great bounce pass on a slip screen to King for the dunk. He crossed over but was picked from behind. He put his man in jail, probed the paint and setup Ayres for FTs. His man tried to iso, had to back it out, iso’d again and Caruso cut him off to force him to lose the ball. He lost the ball getting tripped and wanted the foul. Second Half: Sloppy pass on the screen-roll and it was picked off. CP3 backspin on the dribble but Svi couldn’t knock the shot down for him to complete the highlight. He attacked right and hit the pull-up midrange jumper. His man gambled, then Caruso lost the ball on what looked like a foul with no call. He attacked off the three line with his left and finished the layup with his right. He missed a deep three. He grabbed a board and lobbed to a teammate. He attacked and was fouled hard on the finish attempt, he made both FTs. Wow, a big tried to jump a screen at midcourt, Caruso dribbled once between his legs to lose him, then fired an off-hand pass to his own big rolling down the lane for the dunk. He couldn’t finish over a defender off a drive. He airballed a step-back jumper. He attacked down the lane, went up high and was fouled on the finish, he made both FTs.

Ayres -- -- He got the start with Moe sitting out the rest of the games. Very dependent on the guard play. He did sink a corner jumper. The rest of the points were on setups from his playmakers. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-6 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed a pick and pop jumper. He dunked on the pick and roll with Svi. He swatted a putback attempt. He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Caruso, he made both. He swiped a pass. Second Half: He scored a layup on a high pass from a guard. He sank an elbow jumper. He dunked when Caruso hit him with a sweet pass from midcourt.

Williams -- -- Some good moments of help D and he used his length well in the paint on the glass. He was swish or airball in his two attempts from three and he had a couple of good finishes in the paint. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-7 shooting (1-2 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a +23. The Action: He roofed a man in transition to get a stop. He swished a corner three off the Svi kickout. He missed a jumphook on iso. Nice help D to force a pass, he then recovered to the cutter to challenge the layup and get the miss. His inbounds pass was stolen. Second Half: He attacked right, spun left and scored the short jumphook. He was fouled on a layup for an And-1 at the end of the quarter, he made the FT. He missed a floater. He airballed an open three.

King -- -- Kind of surprised he led the Lakers in minutes with 29 tonight. He didn’t have his usual impact on the floor out there. Just couldn’t get the shots to drop. He did sink one three trailing the break, but he forced up some shots tonight he shouldn’t have taken. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-11 shooting (1-3 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 29 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: Perfect slip screen and Caruso hit him for the dunk. He missed a corner three. He sank a three trailing the break. He iso’d, went behind his back, missed the drive, got it back and was fouled on the putback, he missed both FTs. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He was hammered with no call on a finish and missed. He pushed out the break and hit Svi on a 25-foot lob for a score. He rumbled to the front of the rim and missed a layup. Second Half: He missed a floater. Off balance on a dropstep and he missed. He attacked, spun into traffic and forced up a bad brick (had a wide open three shooter to his right).

Bonga -- -- Man. First touch and he travels again. He had two travels tonight. It’s just sketchy to watch. Simon didn’t play him in the second half. I think he didn’t want anything crazy to happen so the Lakers can advance. Bonga did nearly have a nice highlight when the lane opened up for him to attack, but he couldn’t finish a dunk through the foul. (I like seeing him try to play above the rim, though. He needs more of that.) You could see Coby Karl in his ear coaching him on the sideline. I’m sure those two will be spending a lot of time together. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 2-2 shooting from the line to go with 1 board and 2 turnovers in 5 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: Uncanny…on his first touch and he travels after picking up his dribble to make a perimeter pass, unforced turnover. The lane opened up for him, he attacked and was hacked on a throwdown attempt (probably could have scored a layup), he made both FTs. Another shuffle off the three line for a travel. He grabbed a board and got the Lakers quickly into transition for a score. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Rathan-Mayes -- -- He and Caruso combined for 10 turnovers. A bit sloppy play from our guards. He seemed to get bailed out a couple of times by guys cutting on his over penetration to save him. I could definitely see him working in the G-League next year and having some success. He can create his own shot and looks like he could thrive in that high-octane offense that we see in the G-League. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-8 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He swished a step-back wing jumper off a busted set when we needed someone to create against the shotclock. In deep on the dribble penetration and he was bailed out by a nice cut from Holland for a score. He blew past his man on iso for a layup. He turned the ball over on a kickout. He hit Branch with an extra pass in transition for the easy layup. He missed a short running fade off dribble penetration. Second Half: He sized up a bigger man on the dribble, attacked right and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a drive in early transition. He missed a layup in transition. He attacked baseline and threw it away. He probed and went up high to Ayres for a score. He scored a lob from Caruso off a loose ball sequence. He missed a long pull-up jumper.

Holland -- -- He managed the team low -11, but that was more the result of the lineup he was in. He had some nice D, taking a charge and helping force a shotclock violation. Some good cuts on offense, as well. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-2 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: Nice challenge at the end of the shotclock to force an airball and violation. Off the mark on a lob pass out of a timeout. He cut off ball to help a guard in trouble and scored a layup off the pass. Great job beating his man to a spot in transition to draw a charge. Second Half: He scored a layup off a bounce pass from Caruso.

Branch -- -- He scored a layup for his only points. Not a lot of action as he’s got some really good players in front of him. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 1 board, 2 assists and 3 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He seemed to take his eyes off a pass after making a great off-ball cut, blew a sure dunk (pass was a little high but he had his hands on it). He scored a layup in transition when a guard found him. Second Half: Tough baseline runner on a drive and he missed. He hit Williams for an And-1 under the hoop.

Thanks, DB! Svi is really making an impression out there.

Bonga's pretty consistent with shuffling his feet eh?

Thanks DB! I think Hart's really enjoying this Summer League. He's opening some eyes too. We don't want to trade that imo.

SVI - the more I watch him play the more convinced I am that he can handle NBA minutes. He's got some poise out there and a much broader skill set than I expected.

i hope Caruso's thumb is OK. Hope he can continue playing

Williams - he's starting to show some game now and then.

Miles Simon - hats off to him, great job so far.

DB Thanks.

Svi sure looks like the real deal and in all facets of the game, even as a playmaker and defender. It will be interesting to see if can break into the rotation.

Hart looks like he is ready to compete with KCP for the starting position.

Bonga just seems out of sync and lacks confidence. I think he is going to be okay but he has G league written all over him.

Caruso needs to work in that darn handle but as the last guard on the bench I am fine with him.

Thanks DB! On our Summer League team we have a spectrum between being NBA ready, G League material and practice fodder. A consequence of Hart, SVI and even Caruso helping us advance is that the others are also getting good game experience as we go along. Even most of those on the lower rungs made some contributions and nice plays in this game.

I am quite of amazed how much hart changes the game in summer league. Take him out, the laker lead quickly evaporates. Put him in, we slowly building the lead up again.

He might give KCP a run for his money this year. At the very least, I like the thought of him and Kuz in the second unit.
