As a GU guy I can say as a lock down defender he’s one of the best GU has ever produced and he could guard 1-5 with his athleticism. But he really has no offensive touch.

solid summer league pickup to take a look at...6'9" versatile defender...enough said for me. I do not know a whole lot about the guy, but do remember that he had a decent game against us (WVU) in the 2017 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 game.....if he I recall he even hit 1 or a couple 3 pointers in that game.....he was a transfer that season from Mizzou.

@GonzagaAlum....was looking at his numbers, and while he never shot a material amount of 3's (although one season @ Missouri, he shot 2 per game), his %'s were all pretty high until his Senior season. Can't say I watched enough Gonzaga this season to even guess, but do you know of a reason that may have caused the decline? Maybe just a product of low volume since that is like only 40 attempts per season?

3P% & 3's attempted per game...
13/14 - 36% - 0.3
14/15 - 34% - 2.0
16/17 - 40% - 1.0
17/18 - 23% - 0.9

Yeah Jonathan Williams sort of played a Randle 5 role this year on the Zags.

The previous two years he was on the perimeter more. GU had two elite college bigs in Zach Collins and Shem and the year before was Sabonis and Shem. Shem destroyed Okafor in college and most bigs and honestly he would have been a top 15 pick 20 years ago in the league. All a long way to say, Williams was in the box most of the season, unlike previous ones.

Lakers signing Jonathan Williams, along with Joel Berry and Jeffrey Carroll, likely lining up their affiliate players for the @SouthBayLakers - also one two-way spot open (with Caruso still on a two-way)

1:48 PM - 21 Jul 2018

I guess he will be at camp then assigned to South Bay this season.

If he could make the chippies near the rim, he could be an interesting player.

Sign Jeff Ayres, Lakers!

My initial scouting report stays true... he can play defence but no offensive touch

I agree - he seemed like a decent enough player. Certainly G-League-worthy.

what happened to it....because I very much recall that guy being able to shoot from 3 as a junior for you guys.....maybe it was just in that NCAA Sweet 16 game, but I recall him being one of the guys I was worried about with our slow closeouts in previous games.

and South Bay assignment which I think is the reason for the signing....probably saw a few things they liked, and want to see if he can improve his weaknesses. Could have even been a pre summer league agreement....I saw some speculation from UNC fans that Berry had a camp agreement....and I wondered since he did not play in SL....but then they signed him for camp. Does not prove they were correct.....but it seems like they may have been.

I would have preferred we signed Jeff Ayers as well but, he was not the worst playing in Summer league. Ayers, may have an over seas deal or some other opportunities that prevented us from signing him.

Got to give Johnathan Williams a shoutout before he heads to the South Bay Lakers.

IMO Johnathan has played well so far. Good energy and defense, picks, etc.

PRESEASON stats: 13 MPG, 6.0 PPG, 58.3FG%, 2.7 RPG, 0.7BPG

He survived 1st cut, deservedly so imo.

They probably want to see how he does against GSW at small ball 5.

He is most likely going to South Bay, but he has been one of the bright spots in preseason.

Yeah and he’s been getting minutes. He lack size but pretty decent defensively and little else. Should be in our D League though.

They really haven't been good stewards with their two-way contracts. He's gonna be another guy that they end up letting go.

I do not know the exact rules, but if he signed an exhibit 10 deal, he has to remain with SB Lakers for a certain period to get his money. At least I think that is how it works.
