Longtime Lakers reporter Mitch Chortkoff dies at 78
Quote:
Mitch Chortkoff, a columnist and beat writer who covered the Los Angeles Lakers for over 50 years, has died. He was 78.

He died Tuesday at a health care facility in Van Nuys following a long illness, according to his brother Stan.

Chortkoff was considered the dean of the Lakers' press corps, having begun coverage of the team in the early 1960s, shortly after they arrived from Minneapolis. He wrote about the exploits of everyone from Elgin Baylor and Jerry West to Magic Johnson and Shaquille O'Neal to Kobe Bryant and Lonzo Ball.

Chortkoff was also briefly the team's public relations director.

In an era where so much knowledge is accessible at the stroke of a few keys, Mitch was a true walking encyclopedia of Lakers knowledge. We have not even begun to understand the magnitude of this loss.

I met him a few times before his wife passed. He was a really sweet guy.

RIP to a beautiful mind.

Thanks for posting. I had no idea MC had passed. I also met him once. Real nice, easy going guy. I read his column in the Herald Examiner religiously. Especially during the summer months when us basketball fans are starving anything going on that was Lakers related.

You've done a good work Mitch. Rest in peace.
