On a tip I went to a different DMV office where I was able to show up without an appointment to take care of 2 items and was in and out in less than 30 minutes. AND nobody in the building looked like a fugitive. AND all of the employees seemed happy and cheerful. AND it's right next to a beach with clean water. _________________ "All wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers."

I've been lucky with the DMV, appointments make things easier and the one time I didn't have an appointment I just brought a book and relaxed.
I did one time forget something at home for an appointment and i was dreading having to wait in line when I returned but they bumped me ahead and I waited maybe 10 minutes. They have always treated me well.
To answer CC's question about the type of people, I think a lot of people that don't make appointments assume they'll be there all day so they don't bother getting dressed - it's not like you're gonna run into someone while you're there.
Regarding TSA, like another poster said the only issue I have is the stress of wondering if you're going to make your boarding time because of the lines. |

DMV is worse.
At least the TSA scares away potential terrorists. No bad driver can be stopped by the DMV.
If you have an appointment maybe you get in and out of the DMV in 20 minutes.
On domestic flights, most of the time my TSA wait time is 10 minutes or less.
International flights TSA vs. DMV without an appointment is an interesting matchup in terms of wait time. _________________ "Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better” |

Really surprised at these poll results. DMV is just terrible in my experience. TSA has always been pretty great, but I gues the DMV doesn't have a first class line. |

IRS, but DHS has been picking up steam lately.

By what measure?
By how effectively they do their job? TSA is worse. People get away with all kinds of stuff.
Which is the worse experience?
- DMV (if you don't do the smart thing and get an appointment to avoid some of the wait).
- TSA if you are at LAX. But if you are at Burbank... its not so bad... not that the actual check or anything is any different. Just the line is shorter. So if feels better. _________________ "We got a new universe coming and he's going to control all our universes. We're going to put our universes together" - Metta World Peace |

I usually fly out of Santa Barbara so the TSA is pretty mellow there. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

In the last 20 years - hours spent dealing with gov't agencies:
Jury duty = 80 hours
TSA = 20 hours
DMV = 2 hours |

I had an appointment at DMV and waited 1.5 hours to see someone. They told me I was lucky, some are waiting 3 hours with an appointment. No one ever seems happy there, and they have become as rude and hostile as the people waiting in line. Stupid secure ID's just get a passport, sheesh!
TSA pretty mellow up here in San Luis Obispo, and when I flew out of Denver or Knoxville or Hawaii no problems at all. And they are actually trying to deal with terrorists, and some of the stupid rules that seem to change from airport to airport. Pre-TSA check is the way to go, and I find that the TSA employees are at least professional and easy to deal with.
DMV is pretty much the poster child for reasons not to let the government take over key facets of the American economy. _________________ LAKERS 2019-2020: NBA World Champions! |

TSA in my opinion....extremely rude, unprofessional and have way to much power as it relates to their qualifications. We got a new DMV a couple years ago, and it is actually not a problem. The old one could take hours...never waited more than 15-20 minutes at the new facility. |
