"Statement" jerseys is something Nike came up with on its own to sell more merch, it isn't a real thing that should actually affect a uniform's design.
Feels like the Lakers got duped.
They meant well but Nike was able to sprinkle some of that corporate fairy dust on 'em (the industrial grade stuff they've been using on college football teams for a decade now) and temporarily stun them long enough to approve that hodgepodge third-rate Chinese knockoff we now call our road jersey.
Since Nike took over RIP to our road jersey, how many times did we actually wear them last year.
But don't teams have the freedom to decide which jersey to wear game by game?
Pretty sure Nike schedules it all in ahead of time.
Purple was designated as the "statement" jersey which means it is the alternate jersey, rather than the away one.
I posted it elsewhere but I think home team gets to select jersey game to game and away team has to select contrasting color. Considering a lot of teams like to put out their alternate jerseys at home when playing the Lakers (assuming it ties to them trying to sell some of their jerseys knowing we're always a big draw), Lakers have to wear contrast color which tends to be our golds or whites. That's my theory for the missing purple jersey anyway.
I think you're right. But I (think I) remember them also wearing gold on the road when the other team wore white.
I understand if they have no choice (and would prefer they make the white ones their new road uniforms - the golds should never leave Staples Center), but when they do have a choice I think they oughtta set the universe right and wear the damn purple uniforms.
The purple jerseys are most definitely awkward as all hell, but, in all fairness, they will look quite good if the Lakers rock all black shoes and socks with them.
I would have never signed off on them, but they are salvageable if the team rocks them the right way.
But the lakers colors are purple and gold not purple and black. We are not the Sacramento Kings
Gold is still quite prominent in the jersey though. Don’t overreact. I, like you, wouldn’t have signed off the jerseys either, but they’re far from awful or hideous as many here suggest.
They’ll actually look dope as hell if guys rock the all black shoes and socks like I’ve already suggested. Again, I wouldn’t have signed off on them, but if they wear ALL black shoes and socks, those jerseys will really, really pop. _________________ A creative scorer, a wing defender, and a shooter.
Ultimately banana may be in the eye of the beholder
But I'm holding one right now (BIG time brag) and it looks sufficiently not yellow to me. Wouldn't have picked one up if they were uggo _________________ Austin Reaves

Yeah, I remember that as well. I know early in the season they hadn't yet introduced their purple jerseys (since they were doing the weird "unveil" jerseys through the first few months of the season routine) so maybe it had to do with taht. Who knows? We should just all agree Nike and the NBA's marketing teams have ruined what used to be so simple purely for $. To be expected but annoying nonetheless.

The screwed This up last year; was hoping they would change it this season but the whole patch still looks offcolor from the jersey for all colors. Why can’t they just stitch the letters on separately ? _________________ Billions Billions Billions
Just saw the new jerseys at the Laker Store in ES. I wouldn't go so far as to call them banana yellow but they're not close to the shade of gold as the Shaq/Kobe era jerseys.
Also saw the purple jersey. They only had the cheap replica version left but I still like the new design.
They didn't have any of the new white ones when I was there.
I knew it!! Bet it’s the same yellow as last season!!

I haven't heard anything about Nike dropping the City or Throwback editions. Maybe there's no news about those versions because there are no changes? Then again, the City edition was released months after the Icon, Statement and Association editions last year.
I'm all for replacing the Throwback because Nike messed it up but the Lakers had the best City edition uniforms in the NBA last season. _________________ "Suck it up. Don't be a baby. Do your job." - Kobe Bryant

I'd assumed they would release them all on the same day.

from what i understand there will be a new city jersey and no throwbacks this season.
That would be a shame but I can understand why Nike would do that, especially with Lebron coming to LA. We had a City edition uniform whose design was influenced by a player who also happened to be one of Nike's signature athletes.
I don't know if Lebron had any input on the Cavs City edition but he had a signature shoe designed around it. I can imagine Nike and Lebron would want to market a new City edition and gear for his new team. _________________ "Suck it up. Don't be a baby. Do your job." - Kobe Bryant
