As anyone should be. It was more disgusting than scary. Thank god that torture porn genre faded quickly.

The Shining

Also, maybe it was just the night I saw it, but Insidious scared me a few times.

The Shining scared the heck out of me when I was kid. The two little dead girls and the old lady in bathtub still creep me out but, nowadays, I just appreciate The Shining as a really good movie.

yeah, those little girls....and just the large empty resort. The things that always get me is when someone or something subtly appears in the peripheral....some of that happened in Insidious.

I grew up on Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Nightmare of Elm Street....and those scared me when I was a kid, but they seem more silly now.

I bet those evil city slicker rafters in Deliverance scared the crap out of you and your kin...

Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. I had nightmares after seeing that as a kid. Had to sleep with my parents. That's the first and only time I did that.

Non-movie but nothing stunned me more than Janetty being thrown face first through that glass window.

Halloween
Pet Cemetary

There was the scene in Halloween where the girl got in the car, noticed the moisture on the inside of the windshield, then Michael Meyers sat up in the back seat and killed her. After the movie we watched people in the parking lot look in their backseats before getting in their car.

there have been a few popular movies with that back seat scene.....I am not too proud to admit I will do the hand swing through the back seat area from time to time when getting in my car alone late at night.....it doesn't hurt, and it definitely beats driving and looking in my rear view mirror only to see a dude wearing a hockey mask staring back.

Not a traditional "scary" movie, but Event Horizon freaked me out when I first saw it.

not a movie....and have no clue why my mother allowed me to watch, but for a kid that was claustrophobic and scared of dead people, the 1980's remake of Hitchcock's "Final Escape" did a number on me. When she lights that match, and reveals she is sharing a casket with the old man....still gives me a chill.

The Exorcist seriously messed up my mess in a bad way when I was 11. And those effects lasted a LONG while thereafter. In fact, I had to watch it years later as a 20-something year old just to exorcise those demons, so to speak. Prior to that, I would get images of the demonized Linda Blair at random times when in dark places, both those from the movie and new ones that my imaginative fears had conjured and it would startle me as a young adult. I haven't done much research but I've heard that there were all kinds of odd stuff going on during the making of that movie. There are films, for me, like Field of Dreams or Shawshank that seem to have an anointed quality about them and then there is the other side of the spectrum where I'd place the Exorcist.

I've seen only the Exorcist but my Mom, who loves scary films said Angel Heart and Event Horizon and The Shining were the ones that stuck with her.

honestly, I do not like horror films much at all.....but my mom and sister have always been huge horror film fans. I probably seen a lot more "scary" movies my first 20 years of life than I have my second 20 years. My mom will even watch those lower budget horror films still to this day....same with my sister.

Yeah, I'm not about those films but, similarly, my Mom and sisters were infatuated with being scared.

Forgot to mention Jacob's Ladder, somewhat of the same ilk as Angel Heart. Both personal favorites.

Event Horizon is dope. Underrated 90s flick.

Oh (bleep) I saw that one. That was freaky.

My best friends in high school loved horror movies. I tried to humor them, but never really understood the appeal. Feeling scared sucks.

IT (TV version)
The Exorcist

No other films terrified me more. I can't even see a pic of the girl from Exorcist without a chill running down my spine. Those two had such a sense of dread throughout. I won't let my kids watch Exorcist and they have seen almost every other popular horror film.

Saw the Exorcist when it first came to the theaters when I was about 21 or so. There were protesters outside telling everyone not to go in. The movie was quite entertaining a little scary but maybe that was the 2 hits of orange barrel acid. I'm not sure.

Yeah, I always check the back seat after getting in the ride. Halloween was just classic because it kinda put you in the situation. No gore or blood all over the place. Just suspense. What would you do if you looked outside and saw The Shape standing across the street and looking back???

Spoiler

I hate the the movie It. I’m ok with clowns they don’t bother me. But the whole concept of pennywise feeding off children bothers the (bleep) out of me. Especially the scene where he kills Georgie a 9 year old boy. (bleep) this movie

I thought The Conjuring was very well done. Blair Witch Project and The Six Sense was a complete mind f*ck. Exorcist was scary as a kid, now that I'm older, I realize its a lot like a law and order show -- solving a crime with ton of skepticism. The Grudge had me afraid of walking around the house at night (that little boy) same with Child's Play. Halloween is a classic but it wasn't scary (I think scary is when you're afraid to sleep at night due to constant over-thinking) imo just very suspenseful. That's all that I can think of. Oh,Quarantine is another suspenful film.

What is it about dead kids that invokes those feelings of fear I wonder? The two dead girls I mentioned from The Shining, the dead girl in the well from The Ring, the other dead girl under the kitchen table from The Sixth Sense. I'm sure there are other examples from movies I haven't seen.

I didn't find The Ring scary except that part where the girl came out of the well. Same with the Grudge and the Sixth Sense.

Speaking of The Ring, if you have a VR setup there's a YouTube VR of the Ring that will freak you out the first time you watch it.
