High Speed… The Lakers tightened up their rotation and got after it on both ends tonight. The goal was pace. To take it to another level and outrun the Warriors.

With Lonzo back in the mix and guys making a concerted effort to change ends, the Lakers won the break 38-17 tonight.

“It takes effort and commitment,” Luke said. “You’ve got to want to play at that pace.”

LeBron played just a half, but dropped a 15-10-5 in his 18 minutes. BI, Kuzma and KCP all finished with 20 or more points.

It was an entertaining game, and the depth of the Lakers looked like a real weapon tonight as they took the 123-113 victory over Golden State.

LeBron -- -- LeBron looking more and more like himself and dropping the 15-10-5 in the first half. Ridiculous numbers At the PF spot, he was gobbling up boards. The team needs to control its glass more as that helps dictate their pace. When he comes off the boards and his the dribble, they are off and running. And then, of course, you’ve got guys unable (and sometimes unwilling) to handle him when he’s got a head of steam going. He seemed a bit reluctant to shoot the three tonight, but other than that, he was pretty much amazing and his motor was strong. He was chasing down boards and sometimes turning those into scores the other way. One play in the first quarter really emphasized how this team wants to play. The Warriors made a three and Lonzo took the ball out instantly, inbounded to Ingram and across court LeBron was sprinting like Karl Malone at that PF spot, took the pass from BI and (not like Malone) instantly lobbed to McGee for the dunk. One dribble on that play among all the players, 4 seconds and 4 guys touching the ball. That’s the vision there. Be elite in changing ends, be elite in those first 4 seconds. Entertaining game because of that…should be an entertaining season. See saw some LBJ at the C spot in the second quarter. Warriors were small and we saw LeBron take a charge on KD defending that paint. Prior to the game, we saw KD and LBJ embracing. After the game, asked what he thought of seeing all these guys on the Warriors again, LeBron said, “Obviously my relationship with KD goes a little deeper.” Reel him in, LeBron. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-8 shooting (1-2 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: His perimeter pass was picked off. He hit KCP on the break for a layup. He attacked in transition and scored the lefty layup. Quick lob to McGee in transition for a dunk. He zipped a bounce pass to KCP cutting backdoor for a layup. He hit KCP in transition for three FTs. He grabbed a defensive board and took it coast to coast for a layup. He attacked off the three line in semi-transition and missed the scoop. He lobbed to Lonzo for the throwdown. He hit Kuzma in transition for a score. He attacked off the three line, was held on his right hand, spinning him around, but he muscled in the lefty And-1 over his head, he missed the FT. He iso’d, attacked past the guard and drew FTs, he made both. Great job stepping into take a charge on KD’s pass off. He turned the corner off a screen and was fouled on the drive, he made both FTs. He missed a wing three. He missed a jumper trying to beat the shotlcok. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup under the challenging D. He sank a 40-footer at the halftime buzzer. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Ingram -- -- I don’t know if the whistles will be coming as often for Ingram as they have in the regular season, in fact, probably not. He was drawing them at an extremely high clip tonight. “Just the way the refs are calling the basketball game,” he said. He went to the line 17 times, making 15 and fouling out a frustrated KD in the process. A lot of perimeter bumping and impeding on his cuts. This might be one area where his light frame pays off as the fouls might be a little more obvious. Good job being active to draw all those whistles, but yes, I’m skeptical the refs keep calling it that way in the regular season. A lot of midrange attempts and sometimes forces that he needs to be careful on. Luke mentioned Ingram needing to be careful when the D loads up on him. Defensively, himself he had some difficulties with switches on Curry (like a lot of people), but fouled him on a three and wasn’t making things too difficult. He did have some nice reaches with that long wingspan of his. Need to see more of that. The Stats: He scored 26 points on 5-13 shooting (1-2 from three, 15-17 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He iso’d and missed a baseline jumper (no passes on that trip down the floor). He attacked and got rocked back on the contact and came up way short. A pass from Lonzo went off his face, turnover. He made a tech FT. He missed a drive. Nice reach on help D to poke a ball loose and ignite a break. He sank a long wing pull-up in early offense. He missed a wing three over KD. He was fouled on a pull-up jumper, he made both FTs. He drew more FTs posting up Curry, he made one. He up-faked on the perimeter, leaned in and missed. He scooped up a loose ball, pushed it out and scored a layup over the D. Second Half: He forced and missed a wing pull-up jumper. He sank a short turnaround from the mid post. He attacked and was knocked down on the drive for FTs, he made both. He swished a sideline three off the weave. He drew FTs on a fade across the lane, he made one. He was fouled on a throwdown attempt in transition, he made both FTs. He sank an elbow jumper off a pivot. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. KD fouled out in the third as Ingram attacked off the three line, he made both FTs. He kicked out to Kuzma on the break for three. He drew FTs on a cut out of a timeout, he made both. More FTs on a defensive board, he made both.

Rondo -- -- He picked up a couple of quick fouls, so that altered the rotation for Luke as he quickly went to Lonzo. It’s worth noting that we did end up seeing a fair amount of both Rondo and Lonzo on the floor at the same time. Of course, for that to really work come playoff time, those guys need to knock down their threes. So far so good in that regard between the two of them. Throw LeBron in the mix with that combo and you’ve got some seriously quick read and react ballers on the floor. No scoring from Rondo tonight, but plenty of dimes. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting to go with 2 boards, 7 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He picked up two quick fouls and sat. His pass to Ingram was picked off. He missed a 13-footer in transition. He missed a putback. Great D with some help from Kuz and Stephenson behind the play to force Curry into a brick that didn’t hit rim. He pushed up the break and hit KCP for the corner three. Second Half: He threw a pass away under the hoop. He should have gone for a lob pass to McGee, turnover, on the interior feed instead. He hit Kuzma down the lane on the break for a layup. He hit McGee for the lob throwdown off the two-man game.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Off to hot start in this one and finally showing up like we know he can…and then some. He led the Lakers with 17 points on 5-10 shooting (3-5 from three) in the first half. “It felt good. We were getting up and down the floor,” he said. It just doesn’t surprise me that he had his best game when the team as a whole looked more like a team. He had a number of scores in transition, but there were also set plays where he was coming off screens. All that is in his wheelhouse and he looked comfortable and effective. The Lakers had three guys scoring 20+ points tonight and one wasn’t LeBron. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 6-14 shooting (3-6 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assists and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He sank a wing three in transition. He hesitated on the break, then banked in an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed an open three in transition. He curled into the paint and lobbed to McGee for a foul. He missed a wing three, short. His layup was rejected. He backdoored his man and LeBron found him for a layup (looked like an And-1). He was fouled on a corner three in transition, he made all three FTs. He sank a catch-and-shoot wing three. He missed a forced pull-up at the top of the key. He hit the side of the backboard on a three in transition. Much better balance this time on a three from the same spot in transition and he swished. Second Half: Not close on a wing three. He dunked on the leakout in transition when KD fell asleep. He missed a fade in the lane off the curl. He couldn’t finish a drive. He made a tech.

McGee -- -- Up against his old team, so they were thoroughly familiar with McGee’s game. The Warriors bench also got on him a little bit at times. That fired him up a little and we saw a block and a strong finish after that. I would have liked to see a little more of the LeBron/McGee two-man game. They started to see each other out some, but that will be a tough weapon for the Warriors to handle. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-4 shooting to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He altered a shot. He kept the offensive board alive. Great job changing ends and LeBron lobbed to him for the dunk. Moving screen, turnover. He couldn’t finish the dunk off the brilliant LeBron pass. Second Half: He dunked off a loose ball sequence under the hoop. He blocked a drive. He blocked a jumper and that ignited a Laker breakaway score. He threw down a lob dunk over his man (who was there).

Ball -- -- Great to see him on the floor finally. “First quarter I was a little winded,” he said. That added size is noticeable. That should help him on both ends of the court as he’s able to absorb contact or switch even better on D. He thought it would also help his shot (he airballed his first attempt badly tonight). He had a drive on Klay where he muscled in a layup on him. I’m glad to have him back for the defensive end, however. The added rebounding, off-ball D and switching…he makes a big difference for the team. He had 4 steals in the game. “We want to get after people and Zo did a nice job getting some of that for us tonight,” Luke said. His on-ball D was pretty strong tonight against some good players. Offensively, what I liked seeing was the lob dunk off the LeBron feed in the first half. Of course, that was off a set play, but it will help a ton having other playmakers in the lineup with Lonzo, so he can play more off ball like he did in college and get some of those out of the natural flow of the game. “He’s more confident this year,” Ingram said of Lonzo. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 4 steals, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: Turnover on a bounce pass that was too low. He airballed a wide open wing three. He blocked a big in transition. He slipped an inbounds pass behind the head of a defender to Kuzma for the short one. He threw down a lob from LeBron to start the quarter. He deflected a pass on the ball and it led to a breakaway Laker score. Second Half: He powered in a layup over Klay off a handoff (strength showing there). He couldn’t quite guide in the lob pass on the break. He swished a toe on the three line from the wing on a kickout. He posted up and drew FTs, he made one. Nice challenge in transition to force a brick. He hit Kuzma on the screen-roll for a score (went too early and gave up a three). He stripped a man on the perimeter to ignite the break.

Kuzma -- -- He seemed like he was in constant attack mode. The 22 points in 24 minutes shows that. Just had his foot on the gas most of the night. He started off a little slow, but then started to look more and more like himself as the game went along. We played him at the C at times, as well. He sank a couple of threes, but had most of his scores on the move and usually at pretty high speed. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 7-16 shooting (2-6 from three, 6-9 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 1 foul in 24 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He faced up and missed a baseline floater. He attacked with speed, bumped off Klay and drew FTs, he made one. He missed an open corner three. He got up high to throw down a lob from Hart on the break. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He scored a short one off a great inbounds pass from Lonzo. He was fouled posting up, he made one. He drew more FTs on a layup attempt in transition, he made just one again. He couldn’t finish layup in transition. He attacked off the three line in transition, lost the defender with an inside-out dribble, then scored a layup over the help. He spun baseline and missed a layup. Way short on an open three straight away. He had 9 points on 3-9 shooting and 1 board. Second Half: He missed a three on the pick and pop. Great job changing ends with his guards and he scored a layup when Rondo fed him down the lane. He swished a three on the break next time down. He missed a twisting layup. He blocked a layup under the hoop. He made a tech. He swished a floater on the screen-roll. He sank a wing three on a kickout off his inbounds pass. He missed a hook on a drive. He took a pass over the fronting defender and was fouled by the help, he made both FTs. As someone was saying “go at him” when Kuzma switched, Kuz blocked the jumper on iso D.

Hart -- -- Quiet night for Josh, but good to see him on the floor after hearing about the tweak to the hammy. He didn’t score, but did have an excellent push out and lob to Kuzma. Guys were really pushing the pace off the rebounds. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 foul in 10 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a quick-fire wing three. He grabbed a board, pushed it up and lobbed to Kuzma for the dunk. He blocked a big under the hoop. He backed it out and missed a wing three. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Stephenson -- -- He led the team in 27 minutes as we had him in the regular rotation early and then as one of ball handling guards in garbage time. He’s been very, very steady all preseason. Yes, there’s been ball stopping, but as the team gets more familiar with each other, his game will blend in a little more. He’s got a lot of baggage and irritates some fans with how he plays the game. But on the court, games like this will be very effective for the team. He was able to breakdown the D off the dribble for points in the paint or midrange. He finished just behind LeBron with 4 assists as he found teammates. He nearly had the highlight jam of the preseason, a soaring one-hander that he just couldn’t quite pull off. That had the bench on their feet and his teammates in general seem to really respond to what he does out there. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-11 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He attacked right, bumped off a man and hit the midrange pull-up. He iso’d from the other wing and hit the pull-up. He curled into the lane, up-faked, spun and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a wing three when the D sagged. He scored a putback layup in a crowd. Great reach in transition D to swipe a ball and it led to an And-1 for LBJ. He missed a pull-up at the top of the key. Second Half: He missed a three in transition. He attacked across the lane and banked in the fade. He missed a pull-up elbow jumper. He couldn’t finish a layup on the break. He threw a long outlet away. He went behind his back to change directions and hit the floater. He hit Wear for the open jumper. He couldn’t finish the soaring one handed jam.

Williams -- -- Interesting to see him in the rotation in the first half. Seems they are pretty high on him. He’s been playing serviceable ball (outside of that clunky looking perimeter shot). He’s able to switch and defend. I assume he’s just playing the Moe role right now. As soon as Wagner is ready, he’ll get this run. Williams got his only score tonight on the offensive glass, where he led the team with 3 offensive boards in just 11 minutes. We’re really lacking in that area right now. Defensively he was solid, switching and staying with his men. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-3 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards (3 offensive) and 1 foul in 11 minutes. He had a +/- of 0. The Action: Nice ball denial on a switch to bust the Warriors play. Second Half: He chased down a missed FT for an offensive board. He drew FTs on a rim run, he made one. He cleaned up a Bonga miss under the hoop. He missed a hook across the lane creating with the shotclock low.

Beasley -- He sat the first half and got the start for LeBron in the second half. I’m not sure if that first half is any sign of how the rotation might go, but that would leave him the odd man out. Like KCP, he seems like he’s been a little slow to start from what we’re used to seeing from him offensively. Like KCP, I expect him to snap out of it when the offense gets into a little more of a rhythm. He’s been doing a decent job at some of the other things, including finding teammates or doing something occasionally positive on the defensive end. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-3 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 3 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He swiped a lob pass and looked hit as he pushed it out, but they said he traveled instead. He missed a jumper from the top of the key. Near steal, then he threw it under the rim to the Warriors for a score. On the inbounds he fired it down court to KCP for the uncontested dunk. He swiped a pass, then hit McGee for the dunk. Low position off a rim run and he drew FTs, he made both. Good rotation to knock a pass away. He was blocked on an iso turnaround. He charged on a drive. He couldn’t finish a layup on the break.

Mykhailiuk -- -- He’s very much in deer-in-the-headlights mode right now. Nothing looks comfortable. Even his dunk tonight on a drive ended up being awkward with the landing. Definitely could see the G-League really helping him get used to some of the speed and then building that confidence up. But he just needs minutes to build on. So even though he has been struggling, these are all good minutes for him to get under his belt. Defensively, he was reasonable enough. Not really challenged or attacked with any consistency to be much of a test. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-4 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Way long on a three in transition. He attacked the paint and threw the lefty pass away. He was pushed on the defensive glass for FTs, he made both. His bounce pass was picked off. He airmailed a kickout to a wide open teammate, turnover. He changed directions and missed the 19-footer. He attacked off the three line to his left and jammed with both hands, went down a bit awkwardly but was alright. He airballed the baseline jumper off the inbounds.

Bonga -- -- The Ulis vs. Bonga matchup in garbage time. There’s like a good foot of difference in height between the two of them. Bonga just looked like a giant, all arms and legs. Last time he was in Vegas, it was a disaster. Definitely seen a lot of growth between now and then. Decent minutes for Bonga throughout the preseason in comparison to what we saw in summer. He got his only points on steal and dunk late in the game. I’ll admit being a little nervous for him on that uncontested finish. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block and 2 fouls in 8 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He was blocked under the hoop, but Williams cleaned it up. His perimeter pass was picked off for a dunk the other way. He pounced on Ulis when he slipped, stole the ball and took it for a dunk.

Wear -- -- Garbage time run. He scored off a jumper and a tip-in. Defensively, again some good moments on help D at times. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting to go with 2 boards and 2 fouls in 6 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nice rotation to challenge a shot. He missed a baseline turnaround. He sank a long wing jumper with his foot on the line. He tipped in a miss at the rim.

Walton -- -- Two minutes in he brought in Ball for Rondo after he picked up a couple fouls… Score tied 10-10 when Kuzma came in for McGee to run as the backup C… Hart in for Ingram, down 2… Stephenson in for LBJ, Lakers down 5… McGee, Kuzma, Stephenson, Hart, Ball lineup now… Williams in for McGee with under a minute left (might be the Moe minutes here against smaller teams)… The Lakers trailed 34-31 after the first quarter… He started a Kuzma, LeBron, Stephenson, Hart, Ball lineup… Rondo back in for Ball, Lakers up 1… KCP back in for Hart, down 3… Ingram in… Lakers up 1 when Kuzma came in for LBJ with 5:45 left, so Ingram at PF with Stephenson, KCP and Rondo… LeBron in for Stephenson with 4 minutes left, Kuzma out for McGee, Lakers down 1… The Lakers led 61-57 at the half… The Lakers were outrebounded by 8 boards in the half… They sat LeBron to start the second half, starting Beasley… He brought in Kuzma for McGee… Beasley back out for McGee, Lakers up 4… Lonzo in for KCP, Lakers up 4… The McGee, Kuzma, Ingram, Lonzo, Rondo lineup pulled out to an 8-point lead… Stephenson and Svi in for McGee and Rondo… Williams in… They led 101-92 heading into the fourth… He started the Williams, Beasley, Svi, Stephenson, Lonzo lineup… Ball out for Bonga, Lakers up 7 with 8 minutes to go… Wear in for Kuzma… They held on for the win… Luke on the passing of Tex Winter: “Tex used to always try to get me into the game,” Luke said. “I love Tex. He was all about fundamentals. I was talking to Steve about it a little bit, too, and we were saying how guys like us owe our playing career to Tex and people like that that really teach the game.” Both coaches were heavily influenced by him. RIP, Tex…

The team looks like it's rounding into shape pretty nicely. If Kuzma would just start shooting well from downtown, we'll be ready to compete with just about anyone.

Thanks DB! Great game to watch!!!

It's starting to look like Ingram has upped his game to a new level.

Lonzo - wow some power moves in the post. Didn't expect that.

KCP - good game tonight.

I was starting to doubt Kuz, then he showed up late. Great game all said and done.

I thought Lance played pretty solid ball.

Bonga - very young, very raw, very much better than he was in July.

Not much to complain about, other than SVI looking scared of the spotlight.

Think Golden State is going to look for redemption this next game?

Edit - almost forgot - Brandon Ingram 15 for 17 from the line?? Wow.

Thanks DB!

I didn't see the first quarter of this game but I am glad the Lakers won. I expect this team to be able to keep games with GS pretty close. I hope they really learn how to compete with this team and every team this year.

We shall see soon enough.

Golden State uncharacteristically turned the ball over a lot. The Lakers run, but don’t as yet rebound or shoot well.

Maybe i don't watch enough pre-season games but why are there technicals?

Isn't pre-season supposed to be relaxed?

Also KD fouling out in the 3rd quarter was pretty funny.

I didn't see the first quarter of this game but I am glad the Lakers won. I expect this team to be able to keep games with GS pretty close. I hope they really learn how to compete with this team and every team this year.

We shall see soon enough.
we are GsW’a nightmare. That chucking 3 style of theirs is not effecient because every long rebound from 3s will be an easy lay up for us. I truly believe had we kept randle we would of been the best team in the NBA. He was a perfect fit. I like Mcgee too he is a nice target near the rim.

Randle wasn't all that great. We are better off with the team we have now, in my opinion.

I really like Lance off the bench. People hate on him, but i clearly see his value for our 2nd unit. Think of him as an upgrade over JC but with better defense. Sure he holds the ball too long sometimes, but i expect him to get better at it as he learns his role. Hes pretty steady. Thats what we need from our 2nd unit.

My favorite post of yours. Moe is coming, hopefully he can start to replicate some of Julius' toughness and rebounding.

But for every successful iso foray, we seem to get a couple plays where Stephenson stagnates flow and allows defenses to re-set like in the following clip: https://twitter.com/frontofficeeye/status/1050371082002288640

Give him some time to learn how to move the ball. He has been playing iso for so long, cant unlearn it on the fly. But i did see that following clip where he pushes it ahead. So there is hope lol. All I'm saying is it is good to have someone on that 2nd unit unafraid to get a bucket when we need it.

The team that was 5th in the league last season in turning the ball over uncharacteristically turned the ball over a lot?
