Fight! Fight!… The Lakers had some entertaining games against the Rockets last year. They took that to the next level tonight with a brawl in the fourth quarter.

Late in the game, Ingram gave Harden a shove after Harden drew a foul on the break with what Ingram thought was an off-arm shove. As the refs were sorting it out Rondo started throwing with CP3. Ingram than dove into the scrum and threw a punch. All three players were ejected and suspensions will be coming.

“It was a turning point,” Lonzo said. “I felt like we had momentum. We just cut it to one.”

After the long break where the refs sorted out all the techs and ejections, that momentum slipped away. The Lakers got scrambled on D, two players going to one man, missing rotations and they gave up a big open corner three. Meanwhile, the offense lost a bit of its purpose down the stretch, looking very much like a team that is not sure how to play together yet.

The Lakers fell 124-115. Again, this will be a tough first ten games or so for the Lakers. The 0-2 start was very likely.

We saw some improvements from the guards and wing players helping out on the defensive glass. Take these little things as progress and move on to the next one. Unfortunately, we will no doubt be without a couple of key players.

LeBron -- --Sporting the Dodger hat after the game, he describe his first regular season game at Staples. “We gave them everything we could. Wish we could have gave them more and get this win. It was electric.” He tried to be peacemaker on the court during the fight. He said he didn’t say anything after the game, let Luke do the talking. Fairly quiet game from him tonight. He was missing some easy ones around the rim and couldn’t connect from three. Our offensive sets are a mess in the half court right now. It’s how things will be for a while until they get more reps. It’s crowded in the paint with cutters at times. Even when we tried to clear out for him, we overloaded one side and mucked that up. He played both PF and C tonight, not too much at the C. I think that may tire on him more than our pace. He had 11 points and 3 assists in the first half and did about the same in the second half. The three shooting has been off in the first two game. He went 1-7 from three tonight. I’m not going to read anything into this yet as the sample size is too small. Some good passing sequences between him and Hart tonight. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 9-22 shooting (1-7 from three, 5-7 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and no fouls in 39 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He walked his defender back and hit the pull-up 17-footer. He missed wing three. Great cut to bail out McGee who was falling out of bounds and he dunked off the pass. He threw a pass into Kuzma’s feet, turnover. He attacked around a defender in the midpost and scored a layup. Great job changing ends as Hart had to rundown a long outlet, he then saved it to LeBron who took it for the layup. He attacked CP3 in transition and drew FTs, he made one. He attacked and missed a layup, he wanted the foul. He swiped the ball from Harden, then threw it off him as both were going out of bounds. He attacked, spun, took another step and powered in a layup. He attacked spun and missed, we got it back and he missed a wing three. He swiped a long outlet, pushed it up, then bounced a long no-looker to Hart cutting baseline for the score. He attacked, spun and missed a layup, wondering where the call was. Second Half: He sank a step-back three as McGee was fouled. He missed a wing three that rattled down and out. He hit KCP curling for a layup. He pushed out the board, let McGee fill the lane and fed him for the layup. He took the cross-court pass from Rondo at midcourt, attacked and scored a layup. He was fronted in the paint, took the pass over the D and scored the layup. He missed an iso step-back from the wing after our play out of the timeout busted. He missed a three. He attacked to his right, ran through the contact and made the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He missed a corner three. He attacked off the high screen and drew FTs, he made both. He couldn’t finish a lefty layup after muscling past the D. He missed a wing three. He jumped a passing lane and it led to a Rondo layup on the break. He missed a short one after getting deep into the lane. He attacked Capela for FTs, he made both. He attacked and missed a runner.

Ingram -- -- The refs in this game were really frustrating the Lakers. Earlier in the first half, Ingram looked like he got a clean block on a Harden drive and was called for the foul. Hart had also been fouled several times on drives with no calls. So the officiating was really under the skin of some of the Lakers. So when Harden attacked in transition and used an off arm as he collided into BI, that ticked Brandon off. Harden was whining to the refs for continuation it looked like and BI gave him a shove. Once the fight broke out, BI charged in and took a swing at what looked like CP3. So that got him ejected and will have a suspension. Notice how the freedom of movement thing is not being called any more. Ingram still drew a couple whistles, but I’m not particularly thrilled with the number of midrange shots on iso. That’s playing into the hands of the D. Brandon shouldn’t have jumped back into the fight and thrown a punch. I don’t mind him getting chippy and angry – actually like it – but he needs to make sure he doesn’t get taken out of the game with frustration. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-8 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a wing face-up jumper. He swished a baseline turnaround jumper. He sank a pull-up wing jumper. He posted up MCW and drew FTs, he made both. Great job going up high for a defensive board (more please), he instantly pushed it out to ignite a break. He lost a dribble out of bounds. Looked like a clean block on Harden’s drive, but he was called for the foul. He was called for a charge trying to get post position. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He faced up, stepped around his man and powered a layup over the help D. He attacked down the lane out of the timeout and scored a layup over Capela. He cleaned up Hart’s miss on the break. He missed an iso midrange jumper. He shoved Harden late in the game down 1 with 4:13 left to get a tech, then got the second tech for throwing a punch when the Rondo fight broke out.

Rondo -- -- Rondo’s regular season debut at Staples Center in the purple and gold and he nearly has a triple-double and punches CP3 in the face. That’s going to make for an interesting series the rest of the season. Aside from a couple of turnovers on advance passes, he played a strong game. He sank a three, he had a putback score, scored on the break and set up teammates for scores. I’m loving some of the bounce passes in the paint to cutters. Once again, he did most of his scoring in the first half where he had 9 points and 4 assists. As for the fight, CP3 claims Rondo spit on him. Rondo said he didn’t. You could see that Paul thought he did, wiping his face. But he’s in Rondo’s face and they are exchanging words while Rondo’s got a mouthpiece in. Yeah, you might take a little spray. Putting your fingers on Rondo’s face after all that talk? You’re going to get clocked. We’ll see how the suspensions go. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-8 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 7 boards, 1- assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He scored a tough layup on the break off a tricky close-quarters pass from KCP. He swiped a board away from a Rocket and scored a layup. He hit Kuzma trailing the break for a three. He attacked and was stripped by Gordon. He turned Harden around several times as he attacked the paint then bounced to Stephenson for the layup. His advance pass was picked off. Another advance pass picked off. He hit a pull-up elbow jumper next time down. The D left him wide open so he sank the wing three. Second Half: He crashed the glass and put back in a missed three. He lobbed to McGee who was calling for a pass. Nice bounce pass to KCP in the lane for the And-1. Nice cross-court pass on the break at midcourt and LeBron did the rest for a layup. Great pass over the fronting defender to LeBron for the layup. He missed a wing three. He scored a breakaway layup off the LeBron steal.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Man, he’s been awful. The minutes were at least limited tonight. He missed all his threes and took a couple ill-advised shots. His two scores were for layups on cuts off the ball. Hart is looking more like the steady vet than KCP. At some point when KCP joins the fight offensively and does it consistently, this team will be a load to handle. We need our perimeter guys to deliver. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-8 shooting (0-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist and no fouls in 18 minutes. He’s a +3. The Action: He missed a three straight away. He hit Rondo for layup on the break. He missed an open corner three. He missed a quick-fire wing jumper in transition. He missed a tech FT. He missed a three in transition a few seconds later. Second Half: He curled into the paint and missed a layup. He drew an off-ball foul on Harden to get a stop. He curled weak to strong, took the pass and scored a layup. He bricked a pull-up jumper. He scored an And-1 off the bounce pass from Rondo as KCP cut down the lane, he made the FT.

McGee -- -- He had 5 blocks in his 20 minutes. Sure wish we could get 30 out of him. He should have had 6 blocks but they called a bogus foul on one of them. He was altering a lot and anchoring the paint. Offensively, he was a little more aggressive from the midrange than I’m comfortable with. He worked it out, able to hit a couple over smaller defenders, but I’d rather see us abuse those a lot closer to the hoop. He got some scores off lobs from his guards as well as finishing on the break. At times we’d dump the ball to him in the post. Those are sequences where we just don’t have enough in our playbook and guards default to that. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 7-11 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 5 blocks, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He missed a rushed jumphook. Mismatch with Harden in early offense and he dunked off the spin move. He took a tricky pass on the break and hit a cutting LeBron before falling out of bounds for a dunk. He had Harden again on him and rushed a 13-footer over him in the paint, but got it to drop. He rejected MCW once, then was called for the weak foul on the second rejection, wow, poor call. He missed a baseline hook. He threw a kickout away in transition. He fumbled away a pass in the paint, then was fouled, he made one FT. He erased a drive with a shotblock to ignite the break. Great recovery after closing out to break up the lob after he ran a man off the three line. He blocked a layup. He kept a couple offensive boards alive, the second one he scored a putback layup on. He missed a face-up jumper over Harden (not a good look). Second Half: He was fouled as LeBron made a three, JaVale made the FT for the 4-point play. He pounded the dribble and hit a turnaround jumper from the FT line (as I’m saying WTH?). Back to McGee in the post and he missed a baseline turnaround (offense just lost right now). He dunked off the lob from Rondo. He filled the lane on the break and LeBron hit him for the layup. Sloppy screen, turnover, uggh. He threw down a lob dunk off the drive from Lonzo.

Ball -- -- Excellent game from Lonzo as the rust is starting to wear off. He sank 4-8 from three. That allows us to run those LeBron/Rondo/Ball lineups for extended time as he becomes a shooter. Really curious to see how that trio looks on the floor after a couple months together. Unfortunately, Rondo won’t be playing the next game or two with a suspension coming. “I’m ready to go,” Lonzo said. He had 8 points and 3 assists in the first half after hitting a couple of threes and scoring a layup. Not a great job finishing around the rim. There was one sequence where I was hoping he’d bully his way to the rim on the break against Green, but he pulled it back out. Defensively, I actually liked seeing him in those matchups with Harden late in the game. Wish we would have had him on it more. His perimeter D against the Rocket guards will be a key against them this year. He had 6 boards in his 26 minutes. The guards did a much better job helping out on the glass. Need to throttle that up more. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-10 shooting (4-8 from three) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He missed a wing three. He cut down the lane off Kuzma’s post when Harden ball watched, took the pass and scored the layup. He airballed an open three. Back-to-back fouls in about a second of action to give up FTs in the final minute. He hit Kuzma rolling for a score. He sank a wing three in early offense when the D sagged off. He swished another from the other side right off an inbounds pass. Second Half: He took a kickout, took a dribble and hit the three. He airballed a wing three to start the quarter. He missed a layup. He sank a wide open wing three as the D gambled off him. He passed up an open three he should have taken, but battled to keep an offensive board alive (got to shoot those). He faked the three, attacked past the closeout and lobbed to McGee for the dunk. He avoided CP3 trying to draw a foul on the three line and we ended up getting a shotclock violation a few seconds later when he had to pass it off. He missed a wing three against the shotclock.

Kuzma -- -- Again, he comes in off the bench as our backup C. Again, he’s struggled with the three ball. His shot selection continues to leave a lot to be desired and he’s rushing everything, even some stuff around the rim. He did have 3 assists tonight, but I’d still like to see him move the ball much more. He has some great moments cutting off ball, but sometimes his cutting is clogging the lane. That will improve as we get on the same page together. When they are on the same page, it’s a thing of beauty. There was a weave sequence that resulted in a kickback to Stephenson, who attacked and hit Kuzma for the reverse jam late in the game that was killer. When we all get on the same page, his speed off ball is going to be a big weapon. Defensively, he had a moment or two against the smaller guys on switches. The best was a rejection of Harden’s layup off the glass on a switch. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-13 shooting (1-5 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 4 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: Harden sized him up, attacked and Kuzma rejected him off the glass. On the other end Kuzma then buried a three trailing the break. He posted up, faked one way and passed to Lonzo the other for the layup. He missed a tough baseline turnaround. He missed a layup on the break but Lance cleaned it up. He hit a lefty jumphook over a big on the screen-roll. He missed a forced three. He stepped on the gas at the three line off the catch and took it for a layup. He missed a wing three, short. He switched on CP3, tracked him down and rejected the shot. He fouled Hardon a three to pick up his third. Second Half: Bad shot selection missing a 21-footer in early offense, move the ball please. He kicked out to Hart for the three. He missed a sideline three. He grabbed an offensive board, spun and missed the rushed putback. He missed a corner three. He tried to take a charge but was in the restricted area (otherwise, good try). He threw down a reverse jam off a sweet weave sequence that had him cutting behind the play as Stephenson attacked. He attacked off the three line with speed for a layup.

Hart -- -- Prior to the fight, Hart was clotheslined on the breakaway for a flagrant-1. “That definitely aided to certain things,” Hart said when asked about the fight later. Offensively, he’s a beast when attacking the rim. There were a number of scores where it looked like he was fouled again and didn’t get the call. He just too strong and doesn’t know how to scream or flail and score, I guess. The three ball tonight was off. I felt he was off balance a bit too much. He and LeBron seem to be developing a little bit of chemistry. Josh is looking like a vet at times offensively, so that’s what’s helping there (outside of an awful inbounds sequence between the two of them). Better moments on the defensive glass tonight. The team needed more of that. Hot take of the night, I think Hart would probably be better at backup C than Kuzma. He’s got a stronger post base, boxes out well, can step around bigs for steals and even knows how to use verticality at times. We do play him at PF on the boards at times. (I’d rather play another legit big, though.) The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-13 shooting (1-5 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls. He was a -15. The Action: Great job getting back on the defensive glass and he was fouled while skying for a board. He couldn’t finish a drive and was looking for the foul call (got robbed on a foul call on the defensive end when he was held on the previous play). Quick counter attack off an inbounds, he muscled past a defender and scored a layup (he wanted the And-1). A few seconds later, he blindsided a man, swiped the ball and scored the layup. He tracked down a long outlet at full speed and saved it back inbounds to a trailing LeBron for a score. He didn’t get squared up on the break, faded left and missed the three left. He cut behind Harden LeBron watching, took the no-looker from LBJ and reversed. He missed a running three (again getting contact on the perimeter with no call) at the buzzer. Second Half: He drew an offensive foul on Melo in the post. On the subsequent inbounds he threw it away for a layup. He missed a wing three (almost looked fouled again with no call). He missed a three trailing the break. He swiped a pass, pushed it out and missed the layup, but BI cleaned it up. He hit Lonzo for the three. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He took a pass at midcourt, stepped on the gas and rumbled all the way to the hoop for a layup. He lost a ball dunk the other way. He was clotheslined on a break after blowing past the defender, flagrant-1, he missed both FTs (kind of thing we do). He attacked and missed a layup.

Stephenson -- -- “I felt like the other team was trying to provoke us and we fell for it,” Stephenson said of the fight afterward. He was playing peacemaker. Although he did bait Harden into a tech earlier in the game when drawing a shove from him. Unfortunately, Ingram couldn’t bait Harden into that second tech. Stephenson had some moments in this game. With the atmosphere getting tense, he seemed to play better. He still couldn’t space the floor and worked in that midrange area. But also got into the paint for scores or a great assist to Kuzma. Defensively, he helped out on the glass. He’s been really good on the offensive glass and finishing in a crowd as well off those. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-7 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He outmuscled defenders for an offensive board and scored the putback. He missed a two-for-one wing jumper. He iso’d out of a timeout and hit the pull-up jumper. He broke down a defender, attacked the paint and scored a layup. He cut off Rondo’s penetration next time down, took the bounce pass and scored a layup, yelling and slightly bumping a defender. This caused Harden to give him a shove for a tech. He missed a sideline three. Second Half: He missed a good look at a wing jumper. He took the ball off the kickback from Lonzo at the elbow off a weave, attacked and bounced to Kuzma for the reverse jam. He grabbed a board and pushed it out full speed to draw FTs, he made one.

Walton -- -- He did a better job of keeping his playmakers on the floor tonight, splitting some Rondo/LeBron time. The out of timeout plays in this game busted quite a bit… Kuzma in for McGee, Lakers up 2 with 6 minutes to go. Rockets look to go to work against Kuzma with Hardon on switches… Hart in for KCP up 3… Ball in for Rondo up 5 shortly later… LeBron out for Stephenson… McGee back in… The Lakers trailed 31-28 after the first quarter. Never really got the break on track… He started the Kuzma, LeBron, Hart, Stephenson, Ball lineup. Capella in at C for the Rockets… Down 8, they reeled the Rockets in as the got the transition game going (and a couple Lonzo threes) and forced a timeout… He sat several Lakers down 3 to go with the starters and Stephenson instead of LeBron with 6 minutes left… LeBron back in for Stephenson, who had a good stint, Lakers up 1… McGee out for Kuzma down 2…. The Lakers trailed 66-62 at the half. The Rockets shot 21 FTs, the Lakers 7. The Lakers shot 51%, Rockets 44%. The Lakers made 4-16 threes, the Rockets 7-20… Hart in for McGee, LeBron now the C… Down 6, Kuzma and Ball in for KCP and LeBron… The Lakers trailed 98-97 heading into the fourth… He started a LeBron, Kuzma, Hart, Stephenson, Ball lineup… Quick timeout after we trailed by 6. LeBron has Melo on him right now defensively… Out of that timeout, we are forced into an iso miss… Flagrant-1 down 6 and we came away with 0 points… Kuzma out for McGee with 9 minutes left, down 6… Rondo in to go with LeBron, Ball, Stephenson and McGee. Lonzo hitting his threes this game makes this more do-able… Another busted play out of a timeout… They cut it to 1 and forced a Rocket timeout… Lakers down 1 when the fight broke out. Lakers lost Rondo and Ingram, CP3 for the Rockets… So Kuzma, LeBron, Hart, Stephenson, Lonzo in… Lakers D getting scrambled and giving up open shots…

Chris Paul is a punk and Harden is frustrating to watch with his flopping.

Thanks DB.

I can rest easy knowing Harden’s BS doesn’t work in the playoffs. Houston’s window is closed. Boston and maybe Utah are bigger threats to GSW.

Tough first 2 matchups, but need the next 2 imo.

LeBron's statline reminds me of a meh game from Kobe back in the game

Great writeup DB. I wrote in the game thread but it felt like this game was in Houston based on the officiating. I would much rather someone smack Harden than CP3, personally. I guess I'll just go watch MWP's elbow again

I’m seeing a lot of good things from this team. Yes, they’re making mistakes that are costing them games, but you can see the light at the end of the tunnel if we can clean things up defensively, improve our half court, and learn how to close out games.

Lebron’s fun to watch, but he does seem to take a lot of plays off and doesn’t always seem to have that killer instinct to win that we’ve seen from other Laker greats like Kobe, Magic, and West (for you old timers). He probably just cruises until the playoffs... and maybe that’s enough.

Good work again DB

I want to like what we are doing, but man we just look so uncomfortable out there. So many things we can improve on. Defense, Rebounding, Shooting, Offense, Substitutions, etc. I feel like we are still treating this like preseason.

Kind of sucks we have a tough schedule to start the season. I know it all balances out at the end but its just not good for optics.

Thanks DB.

Lakers need to shoot better. Play better defense. Rebound better and keep cutting to the basket. They will be OK.

Refs need to stop giving Harden phantom fouls and especially allowing him to continually push off on drives to the basket.

The fight: I don't mind the aggression BI showed and his willingness to get into the mix. The Lakers need to show a lot more of it going forward.

Fight On Lakers!

Thanks DB. Excellent T&R as always.

Those refs were foul. I wish the fire ant fairy could leave a present under their pillows tonight.

Luke continues his weird substitutions. Bench depth was supposed to be our biggest weapon, but Luke only plays 8...

30 FT's to 18 FT's... the fight is all on the refs. Besides the fact I think they are the worst refs in the 4 major sports, this game was ruined in the first half with gifting cp3 and harden FT's for flopping and not giving hart 3 different calls on actual contact. I'm guessing the lakers and the usual calm BI were getting sick of the discrepancy, witnessed by the FT numbers. Lakers fought back because they can't slap the dudes who actually need slapping, the coward refs...

Great product ya got out there, NBA... perfect for like, 13 year olds.

Oh, thanks DB!

Thanks DB. Horrible spacing and ball movement in the 4th other than that dunk by Kuz. The movement (both player and ball) was incredible on that play. If we could bottle it up, we would be almost impossible to stop considering the handles, speed, and driving ability of our team.

Thanks DB! I like that Ingram showed some fire but he went too far with that last swing. The refs were a bunch of blind bums.

Good summary EXCEPT I would begin with Harden flailing/elbow clipping into Ingram that started the whole thing... Ingram didn’t push Harden for no reason.

great game description. Good that you'd rather focus on the game than the fight, as it should be..

BTW, I do take an issue with you on the "fight" description

Why aren't they throwing in beasley to play the 5 so kuz can release on fast breaks?

I felt that it’s been a long time coming for both harden to get knocked around for his cheap ass play and for CP3 to get punched in the face. Both are the types that in elementary school would provoke (bleep) then claim their innocence.

"Excellent game from Lonzo as the rust is starting to wear off. He sank 4-8 from three. That allows us to run those LeBron/Rondo/Ball lineups for extended time as he becomes a shooter. Really curious to see how that trio looks on the floor after a couple months together."

That part DB. We'll have a dynamic lineup when we're able to play Rondo & Lonzo & LeBron together. Throw a steady Hart in there, and sprinkle a little McGee, and I'm looking forward to game number 20 rather than game number 2.

There was a sequence where the ball swung from the strong side to the weak side. Kuzma was cutting to the basket to time the passes as the defense moved. Lance hit him with a beautiful pass. That ish looked like GS and I loved it.

This whole season will not only be a work in progress, but a struggle as well. BI is going to struggle no matter what the expectations. It's inevitable. It's growth we're looking for, and we'll see it gradually.

As a result, it'll be a struggle to make the playoffs. Teams like Houston, Denver, and even OKC have a significant advantage solely on the basis of their time together.

Thanks DB. We appreciate your work sir.

Rockets had so many friendly bounces in that game.

This season is going to be ridiculous. I'm here for it.

You know it was a weird game when Lance was the peace maker pulling BI from the initial scrum.

24 point differential on threes........this will be a problem all season. Lakers are constructed to get more easy shots in the paint, while the entire league is threecentric......

Rondo is my guy, I love his hard headed act out there.

He brings some much needed toughness to our team.

0-2 isn't what we hoped for, but at Portland and then Houston is not a cakewalk....we will be OK.

So long as the Lakers take a sufficient volume of threes and hit them at a good, but not spectacular rate, they will be fine. We lost by 9 last night. We only made 1/4 of our threes. If we hit just 1/3, which is still below league average, it is a tie game (obviously some things would change, but you get my point). Dominating the paint and leading the league in transition offense/pace is a viable offensive philosophy and gives us more room for error as to shooting. We just need to be an average shooting team. That's it. KCP/Kuzma have been ice cold to start -- get them back up to speed (especially KCP), and the offense will, on most nights, score enough.

The d is trash tho.

I was expecting 0-2. We need to take care of some business in these next games, though. Much tougher now that we are down a couple players.
