Sloppy… Turnovers, fouls and not controlling the boards. All that came to play for the Lakers loss to the Timberwolves 124-120.

The moment that probably captured the Lakers game in a single snapshot was a late game iso by LeBron against Towns. He fumbled the dribble away into the backcourt, unforced error with 1:42 left. Just like that, this game was slipping out of their fingers. Had the Lakers gotten the score there (and the layup he scored a possession later), the end of the game might have been a little different.

The dagger by the Wolves you could see coming. Butler got Rondo to switch on him and buried a three right over him. Luke had a chance to bring Lonzo (or Stephenson) in defensively a possession earlier, but didn’t. The Wolves got what they wanted, hunt Rondo on a switch and went for the kill with the three. (The TWolves hit 8 threes in the fourth.)

“Right now we’re taking a couple of lumps,” Luke said.

The Lakers gave up 20 offensive boards to go with their 18 turnovers. That’s a lot of extra possessions.

“You can’t do that on the road,” LeBron said.

LeBron -- -- Slow half for LeBron as he didn’t get his first score until the second quarter. He was missing easy ones right and left and not getting any calls, either. He still finished the half with 10 points, 5 assists and 5 boards. He’d pick things up in the second half as his perimeter shot was looking strong. He hit 3-6 from three in this one. But his 5 turnovers led the team. “We’re all in this together. We got to figure it out,” he said. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 9-18 shooting (3-6 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 7 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 5 turnovers and 2 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He drew a double and hit Kuzma for a wide open three. He attacked and was rejected by KAT. Horrible inbounds, turnover, dunk the other way. He hit Kuzma running down court for the breakaway score. He choked a layup after taking a pass over a fronting defender. His outlet was picked off. He missed a tip. He missed a layup on the break. He made a tech FT for his first point. He missed a wing three. He probed off a screen, spun away from the defender and hit the short fade. Eye contact with McGee and he lobbed to him for a dunk. He was hacked in the paint and chucked it up to draw FTs, he made both. He missed a tech. He was bumped on the break and missed a layup (sheesh, should have been FTs). He spun in transition and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He rejected a man on one end, then put down the follow dunk on the other. He swiped the ball on a rotation and hit Kuzma down court for a three. Second Half: He put his man in jail and then had some nice footwork to finish a layup. Give and go to Lonzo for a layup. His layup was blocked. He sank a short wing fade. He missed from the same spot next time down. He sank a three working off a screen. He attacked and kicked to Lance for a three. He missed a deep three. He sank a sideline jumper on iso. He sank a face-up sideline three. He sank a 17-footer off a screen. He missed a long jumper. He swished a sideline three. He missed a reverse. On iso, he fumbled a dribble away against KAT, backcourt violation out of a timeout with 2 minutes left. Next time down, he blew past KAT on the switch and scored a layup. He missed a corner three.

Ball -- -- Just looking at the total lack of notes here says the impact he had. In fact, one of the notes was a bad defensive play. So really a nothing game. He led the team with a -11. A second dud in a row and Luke eventually went to Rondo to close the game. Got to get engaged and active out there. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-6 shooting (0-4 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 24 minutes. He as was a -11. The Action: He threw a lob out of bounds in transition. He hit Kuzma on the break for a dunk. He missed an open three straight away. He faked a pass, spun and hit the short one over Towns on the baseline. He gave up a layup on a drive. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He scored a layup off the give and go from LeBron. He missed another wing three. He missed a wing three.

Ingram -- -- He took Butler defensively and had some foul trouble that limited him, but I thought he did a very good job for the most part on Butler. He was disruptive with that length despite Butler going for 32. Luke commented on the early foul trouble being a key in this one, so did LeBron. Offensively, he had 17 points in the first half on 6-7 shooting (hit a couple of threes). He’d finish with 24 points in 25 minutes. Great to see that three ball go down from the corner. The criticism I might have is forcing it too much in the midrange. They end up being bad looks at times. He plays more like this with consistency and we are in good shape despite the foul trouble. Of the rebounding issues we had, “That’s where I could definitely be better,” Ingram said. We really need his length in play on the defensive glass more. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 9-18 shooting (3-5 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 3 blocks, 4 turnovers and 5 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: Quick pushout off a made basket and he hit McGee for the dunk. He iso’d and charged (he looked like he was taking that shot regardless). His layup was goaltended with no call. He grabbed an offensive board and was fouled on the putback, he made one. He iso’d on the wing, got middle and scored the lefty layup. He swished a pull-up wing jumper. He forced up a 20-footer and drew FTs, he made both. Out of control on the break, turnover trying to dribble through a crowd. He rattled in a wing three after we got an offensive board and found him. He dunked after taking the pass behind the fronting defender. He hit Kuzma cutting weakside for a score. He finished a lob on the break. He sank a corner three on a kickout. Second Half: He didn’t use the screen, attacked finally off it, missed, tipped twice and got it to go. Bad force on a pull-up midrange, dunk the other way. He threw a kickout away. He iso’d on Butler, attacked, spun and scored the layup to just beat the shotclock (lost him with that length at the end). Nice challenge on Butler’s attack to force a miss on a fade. He missed an open wing three. He missed an open wing three. He missed a breakaway layup, but Kuzma dunked it back in. He blocked Butler on iso D and then was blocked himself in transition. He sank a corner three.

Kuzma -- -- He had 16 points on 7-15 shooting and 3 assists in the first half, just 3 points on 1-3 shooting in the seconds half. A little balance would be preferred. I’d rather him be more aggressive, then less, but our guys need some better shot selection. He was gunning a bit in the first half, not sure if that was brought up at halftime. “Second half, things just didn’t come my way,” he said. He had a couple of his threes blocked tonight. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 8-18 shooting (2-7 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He missed a layup on the break. His three was blocked on the break (should never happen). He posted up, spun baseline and dunked. He took a handoff into the paint and hit the short floater. He gave up a layup on the other end. Wide open on a kickout from LeBron and he buried it. He scored a layup leaking out. He dunked a few seconds later on another. He missed a layup on the break, nearly charging. Not close on a runner across the lane. Weakside cut and BI hit him for the score. He missed a corner three. He missed a layup on the break, but LeBron cleaned it up. He swished a wing three in transition. He missed a three and tried to a draw a foul. Second Half: He was blocked on a reverse. Not close on a wing jumper. He couldn’t control a bounce pass from LeBron. He drew FTs on an offensive board, he made one. Nice hustle in transition to clean up an Ingram miss. He was blocked with 3 seconds on the shotclock, huge possession down 2 and Butler hit the three on the other end. He missed a three on an inbounds.

McGee -- -- He had just 2 blocks in the first half, but it felt like 5. The TWolves started to pass out of the paint after getting smothered by him a few times. A real presence anchoring the D. Offensively, his usual work of finishing at the rim or keeping boards alive. He went down in pain at the end of the half, but that didn’t impact things. He ended up playing 31 minutes. Luke going with some very short rotations at times to give him a breather. That seems to be working well. Unfortunately, Towns had 9 offensive boards. Painful. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-8 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 steals, 3 blocks, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He blocked a drive. He dunked off the drive and dish from Ingram on the break. Great effort for an offensive board and it led to a three. He rejected a dunk attempt to ignite a break (he was the second guy down court on the break, too). He erased another layup. He took an inbounds and hit the short one in the paint. He missed a turnaround. He gave up an open three, not keeping an eye on his man. He was fouled on a short one, he made one FT. He got tapped on a hook across the lane. He forced a pass and turnover on a drive. He dunked off the lob from LeBron. Pushed on a lob with no call, turnover and dunk the other way. Called for a foul in the post. Pressure D and he forced Towns into a travel (and then a tech). He lost the ball on the perimeter handoff. He dunked off the pocket pass from LeBron. He threw a kickout away. Second Half: He challenged a shot, leaked out and took a long pass for a dunk. He gave up an offensive board and fouled. He threw an inbounds away, but forced the miss at the rim. He blocked Rose who picked up his dribble. He pulled down an offensive board in a crowd and reversed.

Hart -- -- Hart went to the bench and we started BI. For the most part the rotations didn’t bother me. It helps for sure when Ingram hits three threes. He really never got on track offensively. Just hit one thre and had nice dunk off a cut. The rotations could use some time together more than anything at this point. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-8 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 6 boards, 1 assists, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He didn’t switch and gave up a dunk. He sank a wing three flashing to the ball. He missed a tip. He ballwatched and let his man tip in the miss. Second Half: He grabbed an offensive board and outlet to McGee for the breakaway dunk. He cut off Rondo’s baseline drive, took the pass and dunked. He missed a wing three. He attacked, spun and missed a layup. He missed a wing three. Great help D to cut off baseline and force a travel. He switched onto KAT and got a stop in the post with under a minute left. He was blocked on a putback.

Rondo -- -- Some sloppy passes and poor decisions from Rondo meant 4 turnovers. He did a good job scoring. He attacked the paint and was able to finish around the rim. He finished the game, too. Despite how poorly Lonzo played, I would have liked to see a defensive sub there late in the game. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-9 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 6 boards, 8 assists, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. The Action: He found Ingram open for a three. He posted up and lost the handle, turnover. Outlet to Lance for a breakaway layup. Wild drive in transition, not close. He hit Lance for an open three in transition. He hit Ingram for a dunk behind a fronting defender. He lobbed to BI on the break. He stepped back behind a screen and hit the sideline three. Second Half: He threw a pass away, dunk the other way. He attacked and bounced a pass to a cutting Hart for a dunk. He attacked and scored a layup. He missed a corner three. He attacked and scored a layup, just beating the shotclock. He attacked the paint and was blocked. He probed and reversed. He attacked and finger rolled over the help D. He probed and scored the layup.

Stephenson -- -- I mentioned wanted to maybe change Rondo for Lonzo defensively late in the game. You could have just as easily gone with Lance. Our best stretch of D lately has been closing the game with him. Would like to see him mixing it up out there, especially when you know a team is going to be hunting Rondo to score on him late. He sank a couple of threes. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-10 shooting (2-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a wing three on iso. Rondo hit him on an outlet for a layup. He charged on the break. He drained a three in transition. He was fouled on a putback attempt for FTs, he made one. He was blocked in the post. He drew a tech on Dieng after drawing an offensive foul on him. He missed a corner three on the break. Second Half: He iso’d, spun in the lane and hit the short fade. Great help D rotation to tie up a big after Hart gambled for a steal and came up empty (we won that jumpball). He iso’d and missed a corner three against KAT (Williams got the offensive board and scored). He sank a corner three off a kickout. He attacked, got caught in the air and threw it away. He iso’d and missed a pull-up jumper. He missed a three straight away.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Pretty much yanked him out of the rotation all together. I didn’t miss it or really notice it until KCP came in and it was like “oh, yeah, he’s on the team.” The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 1 assist and no fouls in 7 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He missed a corner three a second after getting into the game. Nice D on Butler to force a miss. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Williams -- -- He does a good job hustling while out there. That can be seen in the offensive glass numbers. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 4 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist and 3 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He was blocked but stayed with it and hit Ingram for a three. Second Half: He scored a putback when we got a switch and pulled the big out of the paint. He missed a follow tip. Nice denial on Rose on a switch.

Walton -- -- He picked up a tech on what looked like a goaltend… Down 19-13, he brought in Hart for LeBron and Williams for McGee… Down 5, Rondo in for Ball… Stephenson and McGee back in for Kuzma and Williams, 4 minutes left, Lakers down 4… Ingram out with 10 points for LeBron, Lakers down 1 with 3 minutes left… The Lakers trailed 36-32… He started the same McGee, LeBron, Hart, Stephenson, Rondo lineup… Lakers forced a timeout up 1 after a dunk… Luke sat LeBron for Kuzma and Hart for Lonzo out of that… Ingram in for Lance with 7:23 left, Lakers down 3… Down 2, Williams in for McGee… Down 2, he brought back in LeBron for Rondo and McGee for Williams… KCP in for Ingram… The Lakers led 66-64 at the half. They had 12 turnovers, the TWolves 11. The Lakers made 7-14 from three, the TWolves 5-11. The Lakers lost the break 14-11 (too many turnovers on the break for L.A.)… Ingram out for Hart with foul trouble just a minute and half into the second quarter… Rondo and Williams in for McGee and Lonzo, Lakers down 1… Lance in for LeBron midway through the quarter, Lakers down 1… LeBron in for Kuzma, Lakers up 1… The Lakers led by 5, but gave up a couple quick scores and Luke called a timeout… He brought in KCP for Hart with a minute left… The Lakers led 94-93 heading into the fourth… He started the Williams, LeBron, Ingram, KCP, Rondo lineup… Lonzo in for KCP, score tied… McGee in for Williams down 3… Kuzma in for Ingram, Lakers down 2 with 8 minutes left… Ingram picked up his fifth, so Luke brought in Hart with 7:17 left, score tied… Kuzma in for LeBron… After giving up an offensive board and three, Luke called a timeout down 4… LBJ back in for Ball… Lakers fading fast. Ingram back in for Hart, Lakers down 9 with 5:28… Timeout down 4 with 2 minutes left. Small ball lineup. LeBron, Kuzma, Ingram, Hart, Rondo (Lonzo has been sucking)… Down 2, timeout TWolves with 1:18. Might switch to Lonzo defensively here for Rondo. Hart got a stop against KAT in the post… On the next trip down, they got Rondo to switch on Butler and that led to a Butler three. Saw that coming…

20 offensive boards, 18 turnovers, and Minny shot twice as many FTs.

Back to back bad games by Lonzo coinciding with Rondo's return isn't a good look either.

One of those bad losses.

2-5 in the West is awfully tough. Lakers have to be careful not to get too far behind.

Honestly I'm tired of the Lakers, when you think they have all the pieces and are ready to make a move, they fall apart. It's as if they are not playing in the same league as everyone else. The team looks worse than last year's and the coming of the king was supposed to save us from all those 5 miserable years.

Not gonna feel discouraged, a lot of teams in the WC are gonna have a down slide and we have been really good in all of our games with crunch time being our nemesis for this team.. we will go on a long winning streak and even a couple at some point I’m confident of that.

This was the 7th game, no need to panic, a lot of bad teams end up looking good early on but fall apart because they are.. bad.. for example I don’t think anyone expects Sacramento and the Clippers to stay in the playoff position just as a lot of people expect the Lakers to get out of there funk.

Cause this is a great look for lonzo- it shows that he's the guy to start and finish games, and butlers dagger 3 over rondo to ice the game proves it...

Thanks DB! I hope you feel better soon. Great analysis as always, in spite of your being under the weather.

McGee played 31 minutes again. I wonder how many minutes he can sustain on an ongoing basis. I'm still hoping the Lakers sign a taller, stronger version of Williams for backup C.

I've stayed away from the rest of LG yesterday to avoid Hot Take Central describing to me how the sky is falling.

I hope you are right IG.

I just can’t see a playoff spot in the West with this bad of defense, rebounding and suspect shooting.

Their athleticism and overall talent is keeping them in games but it’s so tough to win when you are struggling in the aforementioned 3 areas. Those are pretty darn critical to getting Ws.

Lonzo was a team worst -11 which was probably why he wasn't in the game at the end.

And Butler would not have hit his game icing, dagger 3 over 6'6 master defender Lonzo...

Honestly I'm tired of the Lakers, when you think they have all the pieces and are ready to make a move, they fall apart. It's as if they are not playing in the same league as everyone else. The team looks worse than last year's and the coming of the king was supposed to save us from all those 5 miserable years.

Cool, peace out!

Thanks, DB! Great analysis, as always, and get hope you get better soon!

Eben though we've suffered some real tough losses, I'm not worried about our players...other than Zubac, and KCP...or Luke. We have a glaring need at the backup center position, and just better cohesion that only comes with time. I too am weary of all the hot takes from fans, and media, alike. Patience. Lakers!
