Down Go the Blazers… Finally! The Lakers had lost 16-straight games against the Blazers and were seemingly hopeless against them on the road. Tonight, they broke through.

Let’s skip ahead to the third quarter of this game. This is when the Lakers D stepped up for the best stretch of ball we’ve seen on that end of the floor this season. They were scrapping, gang rebounding, getting into passing lanes. They were in the trenches battling for each other. It was one-and-out possessions again and again.

Offensively, that would turn into some transition scores, but also Rajon Rondo orchestrating the halfcourt sets. The sense of urgency they were playing with was beautiful. They won the third quarter 32-16 and would take a 20-point lead at one point in the fourth.

Then Rondo picked up his fifth foul and Luke went to some awkward lineups not bringing in Lonzo, leaving Zubac out there too long, and having Hart defending the point of attack. All of it conspired to lose momentum badly.

As the game slowed down, they desperately needed points. Thankfully, they have a guy who can do that. They put the ball in LeBron’s hands and he scratched out a few needed buckets. The lead was trimmed down to just a couple of possessions, but the Lakers were able to hold on for the 114-110 win over the Blazers.

“Our defense won us the game tonight. Defending without fouling, taking away their three point shots,” Luke said.

So many players contributed something defensively. Ingram was strong on CJ McCollum. McGee was erasing drives. Hart was excellent during a short stretch at PF. Zubac was grabbing boards. Both LeBron and Kuzma had blocks right at the rim. All that and they gang rebounded at times. Luke will go back to the film during the third quarter and show them what they were doing right. That was some inspiring ball.

“We defended as close to 48 minutes as we’ve done all year,” LeBron said.

LeBron -- -- He led the Lakers with 13 points on 4-10 shooting in the first half. The other four starters had 19 points combined. The offense was a bit choppy with turnovers in transition and little really flowing out of our sets. Still, we were right there. When things got choppy and we were on our heels in the fourth quarter again, we saw LeBron impose himself on several possessions to manufacture points late. It was a struggle for the starters. They never seemed in rhythm. Loving the dunks that Ingram and LeBron were able to get when we were on our heels. Also, loved the rejection at the rim by LeBron under the hoop late in the game. Hopefully, we see more of both of those. “I said this morning we are better than we were two weeks ago and two weeks from now we’ll be better than we are now,” LeBron said. The Stats: He scored 28 points on 9-20 shooting (1-5 from three, 9-11 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 7 assists, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a -22. The Action: He hit Kuzma and Ball for threes. He missed a wing three. He was picked on the perimeter, turnover. He attacked and was blocked out of bounds. He attacked across the lane and banked in an And-1, he made the FT. Great help D block to get a tie up on an attacking big. A little high on the lob and McGee couldn’t finish. He put a man in jail and hit the short floater. Bad outlet, turnover (not long enough). Quick first step to his left to attack across the lane and he drew FTs, he made both. He took a pass, spun, faded at the elbow and hit across his body, awkward but drilled it. He couldn’t finish on the break (wanted the foul). He missed an elbow jumper. He pounded the dribble and muscled in a layup, just bullied his way on that one. He was swatted trying to bully his man in the post again. He iso’d on a big and drew FTs on the drive, he made both. He got tapped on a step-back three. He floated as a safety and mucked up a Blazers set. Second Half: He attacked past his man and missed the layup. Interior feed off a post cut and he hit McGee for a dunk. He lobbed to McGee for a dunk off the two-man game. He swished a deep three off a tap out. He blew past CJ for a layup. He orchestrated Kuzma in the post against a small for a score (good pass over the fronting D). He earned FTs on the break off a Laker steal, he missed both. He blew a layup off a bounce pass in the paint. He stumbled a little but hit the step-back baseline jumper. He decided not to shoot the three, attacked and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a pull-up 17-footer. He attacked the pressure D and hammered. He attacked off the Rondo screen and scored the lefty layup. He blocked a dunk attempt. He missed a deep three. He attacked the paint after running clock and hit McGee for the score. Intentionally fouled with 9.8 seconds left up 4, he made both FTs.

Ball -- -- Quiet first half. Lakers played horrible when he was in and Rondo was out. He was a -20 and Rondo a +19 in the first half alone. The swings between these two sometimes are pretty outrageous. Lonzo really deferred too much. He played a little better in the second half, but I’d like to see the ball in his hands just a little bit more to see if that helps. His only points were on a three and his minutes were limited. I do wish we brought him back when Rondo got in foul trouble despite his issues. Defensively, he’s a better option for us. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-6 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He missed a pull-up jumper short. Great deep interior pass to McGee for a dunk. He swished a wing three popping out behind a screen. He missed a wing three on a scrambled play. He missed a three badly when they went under the screen. His outlet was picked off. He missed a wing three, wide open, but leaning a little. Second Half: He got him in the post on the first set and he bricked horribly (should have gone to Kuzma cutting).

Ingram -- -- I’m liking the defense at the SG spot. Three games now where he’s had strong moments. That’s been rare for this team outside of McGee. His combination of agility and length is just smothering at times. It was interesting when we went small, we put Hart at the four and kept BI guarding the two spot. We did that with a traditional big out there with Zubac. I think we’re doing fine with him at the SG. Offensively, we’ve got a lot of issues. Ingram still forces up tough shots in the midrange, which drives me crazy. He wants the ball in the post a little, but that’s not terribly efficient, either (late in the game he had a turnover against a double team and then was also stripped in the post). We did see him get to the rim today for a couple of great finishes. One was a layup in the first half. The second was a late-game throwdown over a defender with his left hand. That’s the Ingram we need to see more of. Not the guy forcing up challenged 15-footers instead of moving the ball or getting to the rim. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-10 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He missed a drive and short jumper. He missed a pull-up midrange. He attacked the closeout and scored a layup. Low position in transition but he got swatted by the help. He threw a swing pass out of bounds, unforced error. He was fouled shooting over the smaller Curry, he made one. He was rejected badly on a drive. He and LeBron didn’t communicate on a switch and gave up an open three. Second Half: He sank a pull-up at the elbow after up-faking once. He missed a baseline jumper. Hockey assist to LeBron cutting, who hit McGee for the dunk. He missed a tough elbow pull-up. Great help reach to strip a drive. Great defense on CJ, he then got a rebound and was fouled, he made one FT. He drew a foul on a moving screen trying to fight through a flare screen. He airballed a forced pull-up jumper. He attacked off the screen and threw down with his left over a man (more, please!). He posted up, drew a double and threw it away. He was stripped in the post with the offense stalled.

Kuzma -- -- His defensively play of the season tonight when he came up huge with a block from behind at the rim to save a sure hoop. You don’t often see Kuzma saving teammates on that end of the floor. Lakers needed big plays defensively to take this one and seemed like everyone contributed. Offensively, he had a few miscues with teammates off ball. We also didn’t have the up and down action as consistently in this one, so that slowed him a little. Glad to see the board numbers a little higher. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-10 shooting (1-3 from three, 1-3 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He sank a three on a kickout for the Lakers first score. He missed a three straight away. He grabbed a loose ball on a busted play and hit the floater. He grabbed a board, looked off LeBron (or didn’t see him) asking for the ball and took it full court for a layup. He couldn’t miss a jackknifing layup attempt in transition. Second Half: He missed a box out and gave up a score. He missed a corner three, then missed a tough running hook (reset that). He one-armed a post entry pass over a smaller defender and scored the layup. He took the pass at our defensive three line on the break, attacked with speed an scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. Quick first step to get past his man and he was hit on the reverse, he missed both (got to hit those on the road). He missed a jumper at the top of the key. Kuzma with a brilliant block from behind on help D under the hoop to ignite a break. Loose ball foul on a tough pass in the paint that he couldn’t control. He popped, then rolled and Rondo threw it in the backcourt.

McGee -- -- One of the prettiest sights so far this season has been JaVale McGee tracking down point guards and rejecting them as they try to score at the rim. Dude has been sensational. He leads the NBA in blocks and didn’t disappoint tonight with 6 rejections. Really curious to see how Chandler fits in with this team. McGee has been sensational, but we are relying on him a ton. He looked a bit winded late in this game tonight, but still managed to come up big. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-8 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 9 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal, 6 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He tipped in a missed Ingram drive. He dunked off the quick interior pass from Lonzo. He threw down a lob from Rondo. He blocked two shots at the rim. Awful dribble handoff, dunk the other way on the steal. He drew FTs in transition, he missed both. Goaltended a drive. Second Half: He tracked down a guard and swatted him at the rim. He dunked off the interior feed. He dunked off the two-man game lob. He tapped out an offensive board to LeBron for a three. He tracked down penetration and swatted it again. He deflected a pass to ignite a break. He missed an open 17-footer. He saved Hart with a rejection. He blocked what looked like a sure dunk from behind. He grabbed the interior feed from LeBron and flipped in a two-handed reverse over his head, huge score with 28 seconds left up 7.

Hart -- -- At the PF, he held the line in the third quarter as the Blazers tried to attack him with a big. “It’s different,” Hart said of his role. “I’m out there wrestling with the bigs and now them guards are out there swooping in for the rebounds,” he said. Hart didn’t get a board, but he was indeed wrestling in the paint. Hart is at his best defensively when bigs think they can get over against him. They try to work the post and don’t realize they can’t move him easily (Hart even roots them out a little as they go for the shot). That’s Hart at his best defensively. The trick to make this work, though, is we’ve got to have other guards gang rebounding to help or have a real big gobbling up boards along side him. It’s just essential. We had that tonight. Now his perimeter D is another story. It’s pretty overrated by a lot of people. We put him on Lillard late in the fourth quarter. At the point of attack, it’s trouble and we got worked, as has been the case all season when other guards go after him. Offensively, Hart drained a couple of threes and had a huge layup on the break in the fourth. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 3-3 shooting (2-2 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +17. The Action: He hit KCP for a corner three. Second Half: He attacked off the three line and drew FTs in the paint, he made both. Nice post D in the PF to get a stop. He drained the corner three off the swing pass (man right on him). He sank a sideline three off a kickout. He scored a layup trailing the break over a challenging defender (huge score). LeBron threw a long pass and Hart nearly slid out of bounds, then did a Harlem Globetrotter routine with dribble to stay in bounds twice and was fouled, he made one FT.

Rondo -- -- He expected the Blazers to play him for pass first, so he would need to be aggressive scoring-wise. He worked the dribble off screens for scores, orchestrated the offense and had the team clicking. Just a great game. Think about this game if it were the playoffs. It got really bogged down and we were still able to be effective because of him. Lonzo should look at this game tape of how Rajon played and his aggressiveness to finish at the rim. That’s what he needs to do more of. “He got us good shots,” Luke said, mentioning that he wanted good shots on the road even if that meant slowing things down to get them. Don’t downplay the 10 boards. We’ve needed our guards to make sure we had one and out possessions. So Rondo led the team in that category. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 8-10 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 10 boards, 6 assists, 3 steals, 4 turnovers and 5 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +28. The Action: He swiped a ball to ignite a break. He attacked and banked in a floater in the middle of the lane. He slowly worked down the lane off the high screen and scored the layup when the D didn’t help. They went under the screen so he sank a three straight away. He attacked off the wing screen and scored a layup. Excellent pressure backcourt to force a travel. He lobbed to McGee on drive for the throwdown. Second Half: Soft touch on a running hook off glass. He was stripped in transition. He got a big on him, attacked and scored a layup. He hit Zubac on the break for the dunk. He scored a putback layup. Sweet pocket pass to Zubac for a layup. He worked the two-man game and hit the pull-up at the FT line. He missed a floater off the two-man game. He attacked the paint and was called for a travel with 1:20 left, uggh.

Stephenson -- -- Active minutes. Sometimes that’s for better or for worse, but on the road it definitely helped tonight. I think aside from a wild 360 layup attempt (Lance being Lance), he was able to also hit a three at the buzzer to end the first quarter and he had some dribble penetration for scores or to allow bigs to clean up the misses. Wish he would have made maybe one more three. But it was a reasonable effort out there, and he was able to do it with Rondo on the floor, which has been tricky. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-10 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He missed a three on a kickout. He attacked, spun 360 in the air, missed, then fouled in the backcourt to give up FTs, awful play. He sank a step-back three at the first quarter buzzer. He got caught in the air and threw it away. He missed a three next time down. He crossed over, stretched out and scored a layup. He attacked and missed but Zubac cleaned up the dribble penetration. Second Half: The D went under the screen so he hit the midrange jumper. He bricked a three on iso. He missed a wing three.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Okay, the turnover was ridiculous. A wild pushout in a crowd, spinning and losing the ball. But other than that, a solid game from KCP. He was able to get into the passing lanes defensively. I want to see more rebounding from him. You can see what happens when we secure the boards. But other than that, solid effort from him. He hit a corner three, hit a pull-up and scored off a steal. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-4 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 steals and 1 turnover in 15 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He sank the corner three in early offense. He missed the turnaround off the pindown screen. He snagged a kickout for a steal. Tracked down a poor kickout, attacked and hit the pull-up from midrange. No help and he gave up a dunk. Second Half: He jumped a passing lane and took it for the layup. He lost the dribble trying to go through a crowd wildly on a push out, uggh.

Zubac -- -- “JaVale was pushing me to work harder,” Ivica said. McGee: “I’m so proud of him,” McGee said. Maybe that support and encouragement helped. He was certainly ready for the minutes tonight … and there were a lot of minutes for Zubac as we went with the bigger backup C lineup against the Blazers. Luke ran him in tandem with Rondo and the two worked together on both ends. A lot of action with him and Rondo offensively on the two-man game. He was setting screens and occasionally getting a pass for a score. Rondo was able to get to the paint for scores off those. A little trouble defensively against Collins in the post in the first half. We put Hart on Collins in the second half and he held the line. So…think for a minute here about the impact Zubac was able to make in this game as a traditional big instead of us getting worked over in small ball. Now, think about adding a vet big Chandler who can do this on a more consistent basis. The other guys around him were key, too, tonight, but having a legit second-string big instead of a third-string in Zubac will help a ton. Our team is now going to consistently play drop coverage on D, so the team may get a little more used to that defensively, as well. Chandler won’t be able to defend that midrange area as well as McGee, probably about the same as Zu but he can anchor and he can finish on the other end. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-5 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 8 boards (4 offensive), 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: He battled for an offensive board and scored an And-1 putback, he made the FT (great effort). He tipped in the dribble penetration by Lance. Second Half: He got the board on one end, then the dunk running the floor on the other.

Walton -- -- Ingram out for Stephenson, Lakers down 5… Timeout Lakers down 22-12. Too many turnovers… Rondo and Hart in out of that… KCP and Zubac in for LeBron and Mcgee. So all starters out… Good comeback by the bench… The Lakers trailed 29-28 heading into the second quarter… Tie score with Ingram in and Stephenson out… LeBron back in… Lakers starting to build a small lead as Rondo is orchestrating things Rondo (a +19 in 9 minutes)… Lakers forced a timeout up 9… Up 9, Lonzo in with 3:40 left for Rondo. So all starters back in… 2 minutes later and Luke called a timeout up just 2… The Lakers trailed 57-56 at the first half. They had 9 assists with 10 turnovers… Lakers were 5-14 from three, Blazers 5-18. Rebounds for Lakers 27, Blazers 28… Zubac in for McGee up 5 midway through the quarter… Stephenson in for Kuzma, Lakers up 5… Lakers missed four FTs… Rondo and Hart in to try to restore order up 3. LeBron and Lonzo out… So Zubac, Hart, Ingram, Stephenson, Rondo lineup… They are scrapping on D… A 14-0 Laker run to lead by 13 with a minute left… KCP in for Ingram… The Lakers led 88-73 heading to the fourth… Ferocious D, scrambling and gang rebounding on the glass. Lakers forced another timeout. Lakers up 95-75 with under 10 minutes left… Up 20, BI and LeBron in for KCP and Rondo, who picked up his fifth. Why leave Zubac in there without Rondo (or any PG) to create?... The lead was trimmed to 14 and Luke called a timeout… McGee, Kuzma, Ingram, Hart, LeBron… He brought back Zubac and Rondo with 5 minutes left up 12… Zubac not patrolling the paint like McGee, lead dwindling. Luke sat Zubac for Hart, LeBron at C… Timeout up 6 with 3:34 left. Did McGee foul out? No, only 2 fouls, so why is he not in there?... Finally McGee back in to help defend the paint. Sheesh… Lakers held on to win...

Gotta agree about Hart: I’m not sure why we keep putting him on guys like Lillard and expecting him to stop them, he’s terrible at it and gets blown by fairly easily. He’s a beast down low defensively, but his perimeter D is really poor.

Nice win, despite some poor decisions by Luke. Looking forward to seeing how much Chandler has left in a Laker uniform. Thanks DB!

Another win that wasn't easy, but a win. Lakers getting better and figuring things out? Time will tell.

They are saying Kawhi may not play, that would be great for us.

Thanks DB.

I feel as if Hart was originally a shut down perimeter defender but because of all the fouls that he was getting, he toned it down. His physicality is better suited for defending against bigger opponents but not sure how long he can sustain that through the season. Also, I am a Hart apologists although Im not sure why I need to apologize lol.

Portland has been the Lakers kryptonite, so I'll gladly take the W, even though at 95-75 I was thinking "blowout". Rondo was excellent. The D in the 3rd quarter was beautiful. Ingram drives me crazy, I for the life of me cannot understand why we are force-feeding him when it's clearly not working. He's too weak and awkward for the things he's trying to do.

Thanks DB

Seems like the units are starting to get comfortable together. Good to see the bench play so well. Good to see Zubac get a shot.

Wow with Chandler coming we should see a 10 man rotation.

Bongo also had a killer night with 27 and 9

Thanks DB. Finally beat the in Portland. They bragged about "being 16-1 vs Lakers since 2014" but we got them 16-1 where it counts A few random thoughts:

Hart is probably a short SF, PJ Tucker type at this point. He does so much better defensively vs 3s, 4s and 5s than vs 1s and 2s despite his 6'5" height. I saw him frustrating Nurk in the post.

I saw our height bothering Portland last night. Defense looked better. McGee was cleaning up the paint (6 more swats). We even tied them in team rebounds last night. If we rebound and defend, I don't fear any team. I even seen "Seth Curry's brother" at the game scouting the Lakers in person. He must be scurred

Feels like a curse has finally been lifted. At Portland has been such an automatic loss for years and years, but no longer.

Portland is also a team we're battling against for that 3 or 4 spot in the playoff seeding. Winning the season series looked like a long shot when we drew both Portland games in our first 10 before we could settle the roster.

The tables have turned. The Blazers have to come to LA for the remaining games, we've figured out how to beat them, and we've got Chandler coming to play the role Zubac performed last night.

This was a great win on so many levels.

One more thing - Ingram posterizing Nurk. Priceless!

Great win! More 4th Q woes and all those missed FTs made it tighter than it should've been. The 2nd unit really contributed mightily. Last game they were all minuses; this game, all plusses.

McGee has been a true godsend. Chandler will also help stabilize the C position although Zubie showed signs of life. If only he did not have feet of stone.

Hey, we got a KCP sighting! Quality minutes from him.

I wish the Lonzo/Rondo differential wasn't so glaringly wide.

Lonzo is really starting to tick me off. Typical half court play: bring the ball across the half court line, pass it to someone, go run to the corner and watch everyone else play. He is not orchestrating the half court offense, not trying to penetrate, collapse the defense and create open looks for others, not trying to run pick and roll with a teammate. Some nights he is energized but other nights (like last night) he is a spectator.

If you look at last nights box score and DB's write up he was a +15 for the game. One game took him from a -1 to a +14.

He played against SA and was a +3. He played against the Suns and was a -4. He played last night and was a +15. All other games were DNP.

Thanks for the HOF breakdowns!!

Fascinating to see how Rondo and Ball are many times letting LBJ bring up the ball (needless expenditure by LBJ?) and once they get the ball back. Good lessons for Lonzo to learn from upclose and personal

BI and LBJ have growing pains on when to go to work because many times they will have the mismatch. Once they learn how to quickly and effectively take advantage of their opportunities, our half court offense will run much more efficiently

Free Throwe - FREE THROWS!!
Got to make them! When four in a row are missed by our core players in crunch time, it will definitely come back to bite them in the butt

Starting lineup have great length
Bench brings great energy and pace

Tyson Chandler is a/will be a great addition - on the court and in practice for Zubac! He needs much more time to learn how to bang since he will not get that in the G League or in the limited game opportunities

Chandler with ballhawks and shooters like Hart, Lance, Rondo and ? (Beasley, Skye, etc) will make for a strong bench

The pending addition of Chandler can really balance our entire roster now. With two quality bigs exerting their defensive influence, we can get after teams with more aggression. Finding what pieces fit the best is Luke's job. It's a tricky process because we're dealing with kids.

It should not come as a surprise that McGee, Rondo, and of course James have been our best players. The rest, especially Hart & BI are finding where/how they really fit.

We've got serious talent, but meshing it together is only nine games along, and it it looks real, real promising.

Thanks DB!
