Showing Up Late to the Game… Perhaps the Lakers were confused on which way to set their clocks today. They didn’t show up in the first quarter.

The Lakers spotted the Raptors a 31-point lead during the first quarter … 31 points! They gave up 20 points to Serge Ibaka alone in the quarter.

“They jumped all over us,” Luke said.

The poor start sucked some of the air out of Staples from the start.

They trailed by 25 after the first, 22 at the half. In the fourth, they would trim it down to as close as 10 behind the young guys, forcing the Raptors to bring back their starters. But time wasn’t on their side.

You just don’t recover very often from that fatal a start. The Lakers fell 121-107 to the Leonard-less Raptors.

“They just came out and hit us right in the mouth,” LeBron said.

LeBron -- -- “At the point of attack we allowed them to get wherever they wanted to go,” LeBron said. No Laker was double digit scoring in the first half. LeBron led L.A. with 9 points on 3-8 shooting. One of those games, too, where we didn’t hit a three in the first half. LeBron made the first one with 4 minutes lefts in the third quarter. But it was the lackluster D by the LeBron and the Lakers leaving shooters open and late to rotate. He got out of the way of dunk that he might have stepped in to try to stop. That seemed like the Lakers M.O. tonight. Just not ready to compete. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-12 shooting (2-3 from three, 4-7 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 6 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He missed a tough runner in the paint. He probed off a high screen and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked past Lowry but couldn’t finish through the help. Ibaka blew past him for a dunk. He didn’t shoot the open three, attacked the paint instead and scored the And-1 floater, he made the FT. He missed a drive in transition. He took it coast to coast for a layup. He was called for a charge. He hit Lonzo in transition for a reverse. He hit McGee with an interior feed for a score. He was held on a seal under the hoop and drew FTs, he missed both. Not close on a three. He missed a floater. He iso’d and muscled his way to a layup. Second Half: He pushed up the break and hit Kuzma for the And-1 layup. He took an inbounds and hit a tough turnaround in the corner with the shotclock low. He threw a kickout into the backcourt, turnover. He rose up to shoot and hit Kuzma slipping the screen for a layup instead. He sank a wing three. He sank a deep three next time down. He probed and hit Ingram for a jumper next time down and forced a Raptor timeout. Bad iso attempt and he missed the long fade. He drew FTs on a push in transition, he made one.

Ball -- -- He’s passing the ball way too early on his drives. The D is not committing enough and he doesn’t seem like he wants to get to the rim. He needs to be a threat off those or he’s passing to guys who are barely open and nothing comes from it. On the good side, he sank a couple of threes to force the Raptors to bring back their starters. He was also doing an excellent job on the defensive glass during this stretch, as well. That was nice to see as it’s been MIA for most of the season. It makes a big difference when he’s back there battling on the glass. A little bit of foul trouble in the first half that limited him some. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-7 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 9 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a tough leaning runner from about 12 feet out, not a good look. He battled for a board and instantly outlet to Ingram for the breakaway score. He missed a wing three. He probed, hit McGee rolling, got it back and scored a layup. He took the pass from LeBron and reversed in transition. He picked up his third foul, giving up an And-1 and sat for Rondo. Second Half: Defensive board and quick outlet to Kuzma for a layup. Unnecessary perimeter touch pass and he gave it away, score the other way. He jumped a passing lane and took the steal for a dunk. His lob pass was picked off. He swished a three over a big. He drained another corner three to force a timeout.

Ingram -- -- The small ball that spaces the floor helps him. But his decision-making was better in general tonight. We didn’t see those contested pull-ups from 15 feet. I’m still looking for any kind of chemistry between him and LeBron. I knew BI would have a hard transition because he’s more ball dominant and not one to light things up with catch and shoot jumpers. Even tonight we had a set play out of a timeout and LeBron threw a pass away expecting Ingram to continue cutting, but Ingram stopped. It’s just super clunky at times with those two. It will sync up more and more as they build their playbook, but it’s like swimming against the current right now. He said he’s still learning and thinks he needs to be more aggressive. Defensively, he was on Lowry who chopped us up for 15 assists to go with his 21 points. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 7-11 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-3 form the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He sagged off a shooter and gave up a three. He posted up to start the game and sank an And-1 turnaround over Lowry from the midpost, he missed the FT. He attacked off the three line and missed a good look at a layup. He changed ends quickly and Lonzo hit him for the layup. He missed a corner three on a kickout. He stopped running to the ball and LeBron threw the pass out of bounds. He probed across the lane and hit the 10-footer. Bounce pass to McGee in the paint for FTs. He iso’d and scored a layup. Second Half: He attacked from the corner and drew FTs in a crowd, he made both. He tried to iso against Lowry in the post, turnover, dunk the other way. He ball-faked, the D bit and he attacked the open lane for a dunk. He sank a FT jumper when LeBron found him. He finished a lob from Rondo. He rejected a big from behind to get a stop. Wild reverse attempt, not close.

Kuzma -- -- “We really underestimated how fast they play,” Kuzma said. He had the team-low -29 in the first half. Ouch. He was a +11 in the second half. The three ball wasn’t falling for him. That was about the only thing. He was hitting runners, layups on the break and even a turnaround on the baseline. It wasn’t like he was hot, but he was at least efficient with his 24 points on 10-16 shooting. We ran him a bit at small ball center to try to mix things up. At least the team is understanding they need to board as a group when he’s out there doing that now. So some improvement in that regard. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 10-16 shooting (0-4 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He curled into the lane, took a pass and scored a layup to start the game. He traveled trying to attack the paint off the dribble. He bricked an 18-footer straight away. He missed a midrange wing jumper popping out behind a screen. His lob pass was picked off for a dunk the other way. He scooped up a loose ball and scored a transition layup. He scored a layup on the break with Rondo. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He took a long outlet and scored a layup. Another And-1 layup on the break next time down, he made the FT. He spun and drew FTs in the paint, he made one. Tricky runner in transition to avoid a charge and get it to go off glass. He sank a baseline turnaround. He got tapped on a wing three. He scored a layup off the slip screen. Lost on D, he gave up a wide open layup on a switch. He hit a runner from about 8 feet out. He got away with a charge in the post and scored the short one. He missed a three trailing the break. He was fouled on the boards for FTs, he made both. He was called for a charge attacking the paint. He missed a corner three.

McGee -- -- Ibaka lit us up. “It wasn’t the coverage on him as it just was our overall defense letting us down,” Luke said. Ibaka finished with 34 points on 15-17 shooting. He didn’t miss until very late in the game. McGee did get sucked into helping, sometimes to a fault. Luke would run a bit more Zubac and small ball instead of McGee as we fell behind big. Painful night for McGee as he took a knee to the midsection while defending the rim at one point. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 1-6 shooting (6-6 from the line) to go 6 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a -24. The Action: He missed a sweeping finish attempt at the rim. He rolled to the hoop, took the pass and gave it back to Lonzo for the layup. He tried to attack and lost the dribble. He drew FTs off the drive and dish from Hart, he made both. He flopped and gave up a layup. He blocked a shot, recovered it on the floor, outlet to LeBron from the floor and it led to a Laker score. He took an interior feed and hit the short jumphook. He blocked a dunk attempt but took a knee to the midsection in the process and went down. He took a bounce pass in the paint and was fouled on the finish attempt, he made both FTs. He drew FTs battling for a missed LeBron FT, he made both. He took contact with no call and went down on a drive. Second Half: He missed an up and under trying to create with the shotclock low.

Hart -- -- He didn’t shoot well in this one, but the Lakers were a +11 while he was on the floor. He got to miss that opening punch in the mouth by the Raptors. So that helped, but he was scrappy on D, which is what we needed more of. He led the team 3 steals. He said the team needed to do a better job finishing with a rebound on D. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 1-5 shooting (1-4 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 3 steals and no fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He missed a wing three. He attacked from the corner and hit McGee cutting for FTs. He poked a ball loose and it led to a Kuzma score on the break. He was fouled on a sideline three on a kickout, he made all three FTs. Second Half: He missed a corner three. He sank a wing three. He was blocked out of bounds in transition.

Rondo -- -- Just one rebound tonight. He had a really bad ballwatch on the defensive glass that allowed for a putback jam. Just didn’t seem to have the same intensity on that end as last night. Our best stretch of the game was when our PG (in this case Lonzo) was down in the paint pulling down boards. Rondo sank another three tonight, making him 8-15 from three on the season in his 7 games. He also got to the line tonight, which is a rarity. Only his second set of freethrows this season. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-9 shooting (1-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 25 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He tried to thread a pass in traffic, turnover. He missed a layup on a drive. He was fouled in the backcourt for FTs, he made one. He got a big switched on him, attacked past him and scored the layup. He took a bounce pass from Zubac and scored a layup. He attacked in transition and bricked the layup. He ball watched and gave up a putback dunk. He attacked and could finish a layup. He hit Kuzma on the two-on-one break for a layup. Second Half: He lobbed to Ingram. Too hard off glass on a drive. He swished a wing three over a big on iso. He probed off the two-man game and flipped in a layup.

Stephenson -- -- Nothing game from him in this one. He sank a couple midrange shots, but never got on track with making any kind of positive impact. Luke, to his credit, seems to have a pretty quick hook on Lance when it’s not there. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-8 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 13 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He iso’d and fired a brick. He missed a tough corner turnaround trying to beat the shotclock. He sank a pull-up 16-footer. He fumbled a pass, dunk the other way. Left open, he hit an elbow jumper. He iso’d and missed a baseline step-back. Second Half: He missed a tough wing jumper on iso. He attacked and missed a layup. Not close on a wing three. He attacked and hit Zu for FTs.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- It would be nice if we had some sort of continuity from last year to build off of offensively. Because we don’t, you see guys like KCP not able to find any comfort zone out there. Massive roster turnover and new sets have him stumbling out of the gates. He shot blanks from three tonight and made just one shot. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting (0-4 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and no fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He sank a pull-up wing jumper working off a Zubac screen. He missed a break-rhythm three from the wing. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He iso’d and missed the pull-up three. He missed a three from the top of the arc. Nice box out and battle against the C to get a foul.

Zubac -- -- Back-to-back appearances. Not a lot of defensive presence out there as he was a bit lead-footed. I do like how hard he’s been battling on the glass. Possessions are key and we lost too many of those tonight. When we add Chandler, we should see good rebounding and maybe some better positioning defensively. Chandler can also plays a bit more vertical offensively. Good job by Zu hitting his FTs tonight. Those things are about as flat as you can get. Compare that to JaVale’s FTs tonight, which were practically arching off the screen. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-3 shooting (3-3 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He let a man blow past him without a challenge. Nice bounce pass to Rondo cutting for a layup. Moving screen, turnover. He missed a tip-in attempt. Second Half: He was fouled on the drive and dish from Stephenson, he made both very flat FTs. He fumbled away an interior feed. He scored an And-1 off the drive and dish from Svi, he made the FT.

Mykhailiuk -- -- Some nice passing from Svi. Well, aside from that one layup he didn’t take to try to hit a teammate for a three. We were down big and in the in final clock ticks. But take the layup. Defensively, he actually had some nice moments, including against Lowry on one iso sequence. Three ball is still not dropping for him yet. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 3 assists and no fouls in 10 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He attacked off the three line and fed Zu for the And-1. Short on a good look at a wing three. He missed a wing three. Excellent D on Lowry to force a brick on iso. He attacked off the three line and flipped in a layup. He overpassed to the perimeter instead of going for the layup (learned that one from Rondo).

Walton -- Such a letdown right out of the gates by the team… The Lakers gave up 20 points in the first 5 minutes and Luke called a timeout, down 12. Giving up wide open looks… Down 15, he sat Lonzo and Ingram for Hart and Rondo. Very little purpose to the offense. On D, they’re giving up open looks… Down 20, he went to Lance for McGee. LeBron at the C… A 19-2 Raptors run. Ibaka killing them with 18 points. TImeout… Kuzma, Hart, Stephenson, KCP, Rondo lineup now… Zubac in for Kuzma, Lakers down 41-10 with 2:21 left… The Lakers trailed 42-17 after the first quarter. Worst differential for a first quarter in franchise history… Another timeout down 50-21, same unit starting the second quarter… McGee, LeBron, Ingram, Hart, Rondo in now… Down 24, Lonzo in for Rondo… Kuzma in for Hart. All starters out there down 22… The lead ballooned back up… Lonzo out for Rondo with his third foul… Good close to the half with an 11-2 Laker run… The Lakers trailed 71-49 at the half. The Lakers were 0-6 from three. The Raptors were 6-19. The Raptors had a 9-3 advantage in the turnovers… The Lakers fell back further getting broken down on D or miscues on offense turning into easy scores the other way… Hart in for McGee down 26… They trimmed it to 22 again getting out on the break and forced a timeout… A couple threes by LeBron, some stops by the Lakers and they cut it to 17 to force a timeout… Out of that timeout, Luke brought in KCP, Rondo for Ball and Hart… Ingram, Stephenson in down 22 now… Zubac in down 21 for LeBron with 49 seconds left… The Lakers trailed 101-80 heading into the fourth… Zubac, Hart, KCP, Stephenson, Rondo… Svi in Hart… Ingram in for Lance down 23… Kuzma in at C down 20… Lonzo back in for Rondo at the 6 minute mark… KCP out for Hart when he got popped in the nose… A couple of threes by Lonzo and they cut it to 14 with 4 minutes left…

Thanks DB.

These are always more fun to read after a W, but still appreciated after an ugly loss.

Thanks DB, I don’t mind these type of games especially when it’s still early in the season, the Magic were leading San Antonio 25+ points ... I’m not worried.

Thanks DB, missed this for a Diwali party with family. Probably for the best. This is the definition of a schedule loss, and if you pair with Ibaka shooting 15-17 (what??)... well it is what it is.

If one is going to lose, might as well be a clunker on the backend of a back-to-back

DB, thanks for completing a tough job!

That Raptor team looks legit. They better not be just regular season contenders like years past and actually kick Boston ass in the playoffs this year.

The one thing about our desire to "push pace" that jumps out to me at times is that is supposed to be our strength and what we want but it ends up more times than not this year having the opponent seemingly feel very comfortable and enjoying that style as it just seems like playground basketball ...very little d and lots of offense.

And lakers are hit and miss with the style at times. With the insistence to push pace have come too many court long passes on momentum possessions that are just picked off, wasting golden opportunities. Lots of reckless looking possessions where we try to low percentage passes for easy looks or justvhave flat out bad passes or clunky possessions where guys are trying to play fast but tripping on their own feet or not dribbling the ball effectively.

It's like they are unable to play under control, and go helter skelter, frantic...which is exactly what their d is. Out of control and unreliable. Their best defense they showed this year was for about a 10 minute span on Saturday but for the most part in most games it's a reliably unreliable sieve. And tonight the raptors feasted on it, as have other teams.

Last night was a bad game but it was the first game where we were out of it early. I still see positives ahead for this team.

8 of the first 10 games were against playoff teams from last year (Raptors, Spurs (2), Blazers (2), Wolves, Nuggets, Rockets). We have been competitive in all of them (except the Raptors) despite a short preseason and a bunch of new players to integrate.

It is too early to put the coach watch on Luke, but he is going to need to show a lot more going forward or this will be his last season in my opinion.

I agree. I don't think that he will be fired mid-season, but unless we win 50+ games, he's gone.
