What's up y'all, I'm heading to Maui tomorrow by myself. Specifically Kaanapali, but I will have a rental car. I know we have some Laker fans in the islands. Wondering if there are any places/activities I should hit up? Some things I'm interested in:

1. Some easy hiking trails where I can test my weak photography skills.

2. Places with a Laker-friendly crowd to watch the games.

3. Food - I like everything. Best ahi tuna I ever had was in Oahu. Sushi, american, international, whatever. I love food.

4. Scuba lessons? Its been on my bucket list. I'm bored of snorkeling tbh.

5. Any activities that are must-do's in Maui?

Thanks in advance!

Seven Sacred Pools means also the Road To Hana. That's a long drive. Lots of interesting different colored sand beaches. Black, red, etc. on the trip there.

Lots of swimming and snorkeling. Kailua bay is good for that. Parking lot gets pretty packed though. Black rock almost always has turtles chewing on seaweed, but they get pestered a lot by the swimmers ogling them too closely.

Favorite place to eat in Lahaina: Lahaina Grill (a little pricey but very good).

Lavender farms on the way up to Haleakala is nice as well.

Mama's Fish House.

Geste Shrimp Truck is way better than Gioavanni's on Oahu, IMO. It's kind of near the airport.

Sunset dinner cruise is always nice.

Snorkeling by Molokini, or just off the beach.

Venus pools over Seven Sacred. Waaaay less crowded. Cooler cliff dives. Deeper, cleaner water.

You have to go to Warren & Annabelle’s in Lahaina. One of the best shows ever.

1. Pipiwai trail. Combines elements of the bamboo forest and ends at a majestic waterfall. You also see a big banyan on the way. Also the Iao Needle Trail.

2. Any bar will do, a lot of Lakers fans in Maui. Also depends on what part of the island. I suggest Monkeypod in Wailea, The Sly Mongoose in Kapalua/Lahaina, and Fleetwoods in Lahaina....actually just bar hop in Lahaina should be good.

3. Mama's hands down cannot miss. On the road to Hana, any shaved ice stand. Bruddah Huts BBQ in Hana Town. Koiso Sushi in Kihei. Eskimo Candy (poke) in Kihei. The Fish Market Maui in Lahaina. Down the Hatch in Lahaina.

4. There are tons of companies out of Kihei that do scuba as do most of the big resorts. I am certified so never used them unfortunately.

5. Must do things:

-Snorkel/scuba Molikini and Honolua bay (separate trips). Honolua is the best shore snorkeling on the island.
-Bar hop and general carousing in Lahaina
-Longboard Kihei beach
-Golf Kapalua Plantation or Wailea Gold (if that's your thing)
-Haleakala crater and national park is not to be missed. As Linda said, the sunrise is sublime in its beauty.
-Mama's Fish House
-Iao Needle Trail
-Waianapanapa State Park
-Red Sand Beach near Hana (don't listen to locals, the trail is in fact viable. They just tell people that to scare them away). DM if you would like details on how to get to it, its basically a secret path behind a school and cemetery.
-Venus Pools and Seven Sacred if you have time.
-Pipiwai Trail
-Painted Bamboo forest

Don't let anyone convince you against the Road to Hana. It is Hawaii. I would plan at least a full day and make sure you drive the full circle. Do not listen to the rental car companies, the road isn't that bad at all and I have done it close to 10 times. The eastern part of the loop is tranquil and mars like and you likely won't see another car for 1-2 hours. To be quite honest, I would consider staying in Hana a night or two you will thank yourself later. My wife and I routinely spend over half of our weekly trips on the Hana side for a reason.

If you've never done a Zipline, then the Jungle Zipline is pretty fun. Stop by any major hotel and look in the lobby rack for discount coupons. They'll save you $30 bucks

There is a catamaran booze & food cruise that takes off from Whalers Village over in Ka'anapal. Usually about 12-15 people. Pushes off from the sand.

Of course the volcano is a must see. While Hana is beautiful, the drive is a pain and if you don't leave early enough, can be an all day affair with painfully slow traffic.

For fine dining, we ate at Basil Tomato twice and it was awesome both times, speaking of which food is very expensive there and most places also charge you for parking.

If you want some cheap meals or want to save some money at lunchtime, go to the Cannery Row Mall and eat at their food court, we did that a bunch of times.

One of the things we did was the Submarine ride, it was pretty great, you go down to the bottom of the ocean floor, 135 ft below sea level and all the colors change..

We also went to the Aquarium, which was not in Kaanapali, but was still pretty cool...

Wow thank you everyone! Was thinking this was going to be a pretty chill trip at the resort but looks like I'll be putting my rental car to use. Definitely gonna hit up as many of these places as possible. Just finished packing and have an early flight so I'm off to bed. Thanks again all!

Our regular go to restaurants in and around Kaanapali: Kimo’s (in Lahaina), the Hula Grill, Leilani’s. (Leilani’s downstairs for lunch has fantastic fish tacos voted best on Maui.)

How could I forget. Best wings I've had. Go to the one in kaanapali not the actual brewery.

Mama’s is the biz. Proposed to my wife there.

More casual eats:

Hit the gazebo for breakfast, expect long lines. Order combo pancakes (mac, banana, pineapple) and a big kahuna omelet and split per two persons. Get an order of fried rice to go for later.

Maui Farmers Market in Lahaina for a light breakfast: Açaí Bowls. Get the one with everything and wild honey. It’s right next door to Badass coffe. Grab a Joe.

Aloha Mix Plate is traditional Hawaiian food and although the reviews are just good on yelp, the location is fantastic. Coconut prawns, Korean chicken wings, mochiko chicken, kalbi or the teriyaki beef with a fried egg.

If you can make it out to kula, hit ulupalakua ranch store. Great burgers.

Maui fish market for high quality poke and good fish/shrimp burritos and tacos.

I had both Hula Grill and the fish tacos at Leilani's. Both establishments were excellent. My concierge personally knows the bartender at Kimo's and I'm going to hit that up probably tomorrow. I'm heading to Mama's Fish house today for lunch and then will probably stop by Twin Falls for some scenery.

Really appreciate all the recommendations everyone. I thought 6 nights would be enough time but clearly there are just too many places to go to. I'll be keeping these notes handy for my next trip out here.

Remember to make reservations as early as possible because the place gets packed and it's tough to get a table as a walk in.

Oh, I've never been to Koiso. Wonder how it compares to stuff on Oahu.
