Tyson Chandler… At the buzzer. For the win. With the block.

Wow. I wasn’t sure Chandler could get up that high anymore, but he did.

Trae Young drove past Ingram and got to the rim to throw up a short floater over a closing Tyson. Chandler got up with every bit of his reach and hops to block the ball at the buzzer to secure the 107-106 Laker victory.

The Lakers tried their best to lose this game. They had 15 first half turnovers and trailed by a point at the half. Ingram led all Lakers with 5 of those turnovers. Coaches thought it was a lack of energy (maybe focus).

After a strong third quarter by the Laker starters, it was Rondo and company coming in the game to give up the 15-point lead this time. Sometimes, you have it. Sometimes, you don’t. Unlike last night, parts of the second unit were clearly flat and didn’t bring it.

By the time the starters came back in, the team was on their collective heels and struggling to regain chemistry. In the final few minutes, Luke sat Lonzo (who was a driving force for the team all night) for Hart.

As the Lakers clanked away from the freethrow line, the Hawks were ready to taste sweet road victory. But down a point, LeBron drew FTs on a drive with 19 seconds left. He missed both FTs. Kuzma got after the miss, kept it alive, missed a putback but LeBron jammed it back down, hanging on the rim a bit upset with himself for missing the FTs.

After a timeout, it was Chandler saving the day when Ingram lost containment of his man. Clutch block way above the rim at the buzzer. He was mobbed by teammates immediately after.

“To make a game winning block, you don’t see that much in our league,” LeBron said.

LeBron -- -- “I’m garbage. I suck from the freethrow line right now,” LeBron said after the game. He missed a couple huge ones with 19 seconds left, but came up big with that putback jam a few seconds later. It was a clunky close to the game, but I liked seeing him attack the paint to earn those FTs. That’s when you’ve got to get physical and will the team to win. We obviously have a lot of work to do in the halfcourt sets. They aren’t much but see what LeBron can do and an occasional impromptu cut by Kuzma. LeBron led the team with 12 points in the first half on 4-8 shooting, hitting a couple of threes. He had a couple steals, but coughed the ball up 3 times. He’d finish with 4 turnovers. Liked the screening between Lonzo and LeBron in this one. It gave LeBron some good mismatches to take advantage of, but they also used it to set each other up for good looks from three. Best sequence off those was LeBron hitting Lonzo on the roll and Lonzo then lobbing to the big for the dunk. The Stats: He scored The Action: He missed a wing three. He got bumped on a drive and missed a layup with no call. He stripped his man, pushed out the ball and was fouled (weak flagrant-1 call), he made one FT. He swished a wing three. His pass was picked, telegraphing it a little. He iso’d and missed a jumper from the top of the key. He attacked off the pocket pass from Lonzo and drew FTs, he made one again. He stopped at the wing, measured and drained a three. He attacked, lost it, got it back and threw it away for a layup the other way. He dunked on a tap back from Ingram on the break. He threw down on the break with Lonzo after filling the lane at high speed. He found Kuzma on the secondary break for a layup. He lost the ball on the final play of the half. Second Half: He iso’d and hit the 21-footer against a big. He attacked, took contact and couldn’t finish. He missed a pull-up three. He dunked off the pocket pass from Lonzo. He hit Kuzma trailing the break for a layup. He attacked off the Lonzo screen, spun into the paint and hit the And-1 fade, he made the FT. He fired a bullet to Kuzma backdooring his man for a layup. He sank a wing three behind a Lonzo screen. He hit Lonzo rolling off the screen, who then lobbed to Chandler for the dunk. Bad perimeter pass and it was easily stolen. No communication and they left a big open under the hoop on a switch. He missed a flat three. He attacked, missed, got it back and scored. He missed a three on iso, got it back and missed another long iso three. He swiped the ball on the perimeter. He pushed it up court and was fouled on the drive with 19 seconds left, down 1. He missed both FTs, Kuzma kept it alive, missed a putback but LeBron dunked it back in.

Ball -- -- He had 6 assists in his first 13 minutes. He was a +6 in the first half, Rondo a -7. At the end of the game, that was a +14 and a -17 for the two. Once again on opposite ends of the spectrum. Lonzo finished with 11 assists. He and LeBron had some excellent chemistry in this one as Lonzo worked the two-man game with him often a screener. Lonzo also did a lot more pick and roll work with the ball in his hands, which is probably what they need to do a bit more of to keep him fully engaged and activated. He sank a couple of threes and two FTs for his points tonight. Even got a block tonight (not sure why those have been MIA). Despite all that, couldn’t close the game again for Luke. Sigh. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-5 shooting (2-3 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 11 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: As usual, not close on the midrange bank attempt on a runner (just no touch on those). He got deep penetration and hit McGee for the dunk. He attacked off the three line and hit McGee for the dunk. Nice pocket pass to LBJ for FTs (I’d like to see more two-man sequences between those two). He attacked the paint, jumped in the air and threw a pass into the stands. He pushed it up and hit LeBron for the dunk. He pushed it up full court and missed the layup. He couldn’t connect on a lob pass for McGee, points the other way. He sank a wing three trailing the break. He hit Kuzma cutting for a layup. He stripped a man under the paint to get a stop. Second Half: He sank a three behind a LeBron screen. He kicked to Kuzma for a corner three. He attacked baseline and hit Ingram cutting for FTs. He pressured a passing lane and forced a travel on a big. Pocket pass to LeBron for a dunk. He was called for a charge using an off forearm while backing a man down. He was fouled on the defensive glass for FTs, he made both. He screened for LeBron, rolled to the baseline, took the pass and lobbed to Chandler for the dunk. He missed a wing three out of a timeout.

Ingram -- -- Not sure I’d blame him if Young scored for the win there. Tough situation for BI to be put in. “I did a bad job defending the ball,” Ingram said. Should have been Lonzo defending that. Ingram’s legs are just too long to react quickly enough against small guards. If you want to defend the three line, then fine, but we were up just one. Offensively, ball stopping got him Ingram into trouble. He was pounding the dribble quite a bit and we paid the price for it. I think the ball stopping isn’t as apparent this year since LeBron and Rondo will pound the dribble quite a bit. Awful first half with 5 turnovers. He was stripped a couple of times pounding the dribble, he hooked on a postup and he threw a couple passes away. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-8 shooting (4-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 6 turnovers and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He was stripped trying to probe off a screen on the first possession. Bad fading one-footer in early offense, not sure what he was thinking (two bad possessions to start). He pounded the dribble and was stripped again, then fouled (awful start). He blocked a shot on the break to force a jumpball. He was called for the hook in the paint. He sank a 12-footer off a pumpfake in the paint. He swished a 17-foot catch and shoot. He attacked, drew contact and missed but Chandler dunked it in. He saved a lob on the break to LeBron for a dunk. He posted up and threw a pass out of bounds. He threw another pass away, layup the other way. He went one way on D, his man the other and the Lakers were forced to foul. Second Half: Good cut off Lonzo’s baseline drive and he earned FTs trying to dunk, he made one. The ball stopped in his hands, he attacked off the three line after a bit and was stripped again. He was fouled attacking in transition, he made both FTs. He couldn’t finish a layup attacking off the wing screen. He sank an open wing jumper coming off the pindown. He missed a 14-footer next time down. Straight-line drive and he drew FTs, he made one. He couldn’t finish a layup.

Kuzma -- -- He made a key tech FT with 1:34 left in the game. “You’re going to walk to the line with confidence, you better make it, and he made it,” Luke said. We don’t have a good option at the line to close games. It’s a little frightening. I was actually a little relieved to see him at the line compared to everyone else. More impressed that he was like “give me that ball” and taking that. Some huge plays down the stretch, including a layup trailing the break and, of course, that offensive board. The three ball wasn’t dropping for him, but he had some nice off-ball cuts that LeBron was able to find him for in both the halfcourt and in transition. He was in on some big plays down the stretch to help the team win. Defensively, better. He had a couple of steals, hit the boards a little. Nowhere to go but up on that end of the floor. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 8-18 shooting (1-6 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 8 boards (4 offensive), 1 assist, 2 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: He took an interior feed, up-faked and scored a layup. He missed a three from the top of the arc. Nice challenge but he lost the ball on the subsequent pushout. He missed a short one at the front of the rim. He missed a one-hander after cutting across the lane to take a pass. He scored a layup when LeBron found him on the secondary break. He missed a sideline three. He scored a layup off the UCLA cut when Lonzo hit him. He attacked baseline and muscled in a layup past Plumlee. Second Half: He deflected a pass to get a stop. He sank a corner three on a kickout. He was blocked out of bounds on a drive. He missed a three on the inbounds pass. He trailed the break and LeBron found him for the layup. Great backdoor cut, bumping his man and taking the feed from LeBron for the score. He scored a layup trailing the break when Hart found him after a drive. With 1:34 left, he went to the line to shoot the FT (score tied), he made it. He missed a three with a minute left. Great job getting to an offensive board off LeBron’s missed FTs, he missed a short one, but LeBron dunked it in.

McGee -- -- Lonzo found him for some dunks tonight. He missed a few chippies in the paint. Luke has been trusting Chandler to close the game and that has definitely paid off in these close games. McGee did swat a Young drive early in the game, so he might have been there, too, on that final play. Luke did bench him briefly for taking a corner three. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-9 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He dunked off the drive and dish from Lonzo. He rejected a drive out of bounds, then went to autograph the ball. He dunked off the drive and dish from Lonzo. Another good challenge at the rim to prevent a dunk. He rejected a drive. He was hacked on a lob throwdown attempt, he made one FT. He missed a short jumphook. Not close on an open corner three. He missed a short lob he should have brought down. He missed a short one after a pivot under the hoop. He deflected a lob on D. Second Half: He pulled down an offensive board on a missed FT. He was called for an illegal screen he didn’t need to move on. He missed a short one in the middle of the paint. He grabbed a board and dunked. He was fouled on a drive, he made one FT.

Hart -- -- Josh led the team with a +9 in his 10 first half minutes (he should have played more, Ingram was garbage). We found some extra minutes for him in place of Lonzo in the final minutes to close this one. A couple games back, Luke hinted about maybe bringing Hart in as defensive sub instead of using Rondo. That’s what he did tonight. I really felt like the lineup that probably would have had it flowing the best tonight was a Center, Kuzma, LeBron, Hart and Lonzo. Outside shooting, cutting, passing. We probably could have made our lives a little easier with that unit in the fourth. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-9 shooting (2-7 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He swished an open wing three on a kickout. He jumped a passing lane, swiped the ball and took it for a score on the other end. He missed a three, stepping into it awkwardly. He ran into the help D for a charge on a drive. He sank an open wing three on a kickout. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He missed a wide open three. He stepped out of bounds on a push off. He missed a wing three. He missed a tough three up against the shotclock. He attacked off the three line and was fouled on a floater, he made one FT. He attacked in transition and hit Kuzma trailing the break for the layup. He couldn’t hit rim on a layup up against the clock, shotclock violation with 47 seconds left.

Rondo -- -- This looked like one of those games where a vet kind of phones it in a bit. Second night of a back to back against a couple of high paced teams. You just want to get through it. Rondo didn’t have a lot of pop in his game or really much purpose. In fact, we might have been better off with more Stephenson running the point for stretches. Defensively, he was a bit of a warm body and that’s about it. That’s where if you’re Luke, you should lean on your youth more on the second night. At least we didn’t close with him. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 6 boards, 5 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He hit KCP for a three. Late to get a shot off at the end of the quarter, so an 18-foot scoop that swished didn’t count. His kickout was deflected. He swished a one-footed fade in the middle of the paint. He missed an open corner three. Second Half: He attacked the paint and wasn’t close on a layup he should have had. He clanked an elbow jumper.

Chandler -- -- I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a block at the buzzer to win the game. That shot looked like it was easily going to drop. I can’t believe how high Chandler went to get that. That was impressive. Loved seeing all the reaction from his teammates after that and, of course, Chandler fired up. The team is starting to win games on the defensive side of the floor now with him. Clutch stop tonight, clutch offensive boards his first game out. If we had started the season with Chandler, our record would have looked a lot better, no doubt. Hard to say how many more wins, but I’m glad we have him now. He had 5 offensive boards tonight, strangely no defensive boards but he did have 2 steals and 3 blocks (so 6 blocks from our two bigs). I like how our bigs +/- numbers in this game are relatively similar and reflective of margin of victory. We shuttle them in and out all game that they will be with whichever lineup is doing well or whichever is sucking…but their play seems to be consistent with either unit. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting to go with 5 offensive boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He denied a drive on the baseline to get a stop. Sloppy perimeter screen, walking through a defender, turnover. He dunked off the missed drive by Ingram. Second Half: He dunked off the lob from Lonzo. He hit KCP on the give and go for a layup. He was called for three seconds. He choked a putback. Wow, Chandler saves the game with a block at the rim at the buzzer.

Stephenson -- -- The three ball was dropping for him again. He sank three of them in his limited time. There was one sequence where the ball zipped around the perimeter, then cross court to him for the open three. I’d love it if our second unit could do more of that, but that seems doubtful with our personnel. He came in for LeBron whenever Luke would sub LBJ out. Defensively, we were a bit oft on three shooters, even going under the screen to guys like Bazemore to give up threes. Awful stat of the night: Every Laker on the floor had at least 1 turnover in the game. Stephenson’s are usually just much more spectacular than others that they almost seem like they are worth two or three, but he had just one. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 3-7 shooting (3-5 from the three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He missed a pull-up three. He attacked the paint hard, hung and drew FTs, he made both. He lost a deflected kickout. Second Half: He missed a three, got it back, spun, tripped and threw it away. He sank a wing three in transition and held the pose. He was trying to throw down hard and either lost it or was blocked after showing the ball. Good ball movement and he hit a wing three. He sank a step-back three on iso. He attacked and missed a drive.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He had the dubious distinction of the team-low -24 in just 16 minutes tonight. Yikes. His shot looked decent, hitting half of his six attempts from three. That seems to be coming around. He’s also had a couple of his better passing sequences in the past couple of games. Tonight, another lob attempt after curling into the paint to setup McGee for points. Despite how badly they played when he was out there, his game does at least seem to be showing a pulse lately. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-8 shooting (3-6 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -24. The Action: He missed a floater. He missed a sideline three. He drew a push-off foul on the perimeter with some aggressive D. He kicked out to Hart for three. He swiped a ball on one end, then hit the three trailing the break. He sank a two-for-one wing three on a kickout. He curled into the paint, took the pass and lobbed to McGee for FTs. He was stripped from behind for a dunk the other way. Second Half: Awkward chuck from the corner and he missed badly. He swiped it back in transition. He scored a layup off the give and go with Chandler. He sank a three trailing the break. He missed a three in transition.

Walton -- -- Lakers quickly fell back 9-0 off some awful ball by Ingram to start… Hart in for Ingram who was awful but picked up a couple fouls… Stephenson in for Kuzma up 2 with 5:32 left… Chandler in for McGee up 2 with 5 minutes left… Rondo and KCP in, Lakers up 5… Chandler out for McGee, Lakers up 3 with under a minute left… The Lakers led 28-22 after the first quarter despite 8 turnovers… Up 4, Kuzma in for Hart… They gave up a 7-0 run to trail by 1 and Luke called a timeout… They fell back further, so Luke brought in LeBron, Ingram and Chandler with 8:44 left down 4… Lonzo in down 2 with 5 minutes left… Ingram picked up his third and sat with 2:36 left, Lakers down 5. Hart in… The Lakers trailed 53-52 at the half. They had 14 assists with 15 turnovers… They pushed out to a 5-point lead midway through the quarter when the timeout came… Chandler in for McGee, Lakers up 10… The pushed the lead to 14 points and forced another timeout (a 17-5 run)… Hart in for Kuzma out of that… Stephenson and KCP in for LeBron and Ingram up 14 still… Lonzo out for Rondo up 12… Second unit sucking some life out of the game… They led 84-75 heading into the fourth… The lead was trimmed to 3… Up 4, McGee in for Chandler… Really need to sit Rondo and bring back Lonzo already… With 7:41, Luke finally called timeout. Soft second unit D allowed Trae Young to get going. Lakers up just 2… He brought in Lonzo, LeBron and Ingram (uhoh) to go with KCP (uhoh) and McGee… Down 1 and Luke called a timeout. The lineup should be Center, Kuzma, LeBron, Hart, Lonzo if you want to get the chemistry back… Chandler and Kuzma in. So starters with Chandler… Hart in for Lonzo. Wow, Lakers down 3 with a few minutes left… They tied it up when a timeout came with 1:34 left… Lakers up 1 with 15 seconds left. He went with Chandler, Kuzma, LeBron, Ingram and Hart to get the stop. Ingram has been on Young… Chandler saved Ingram with a block at the rim at the buzzer… “We will take it and learn from it,” Luke said…

Thanks DB!

We got the talent, just not sure if Luke really knows what to do with all that.

LBJ missed both free throws again... I am glad he got those points back with that putback slam while Kuz kept it alive. I hope it gets easier from here on out.

Without that Tyson block, it could have been a heartbreaking loss.

It's that and the late game isolation hero-ball does not work either. Not with LeBron. Seems he's just not clutch. There was that one three once which sent a game to overtime, but not much else. Should at least drive to the basket with that length and strength, but all he ever does is to jack up another long, contested three.

And I like the summary of LeBron's game:

The Stats: He scored

Says it all, doesn't it? DB at his best.

Thanks DB.

The 1st half turnovers were really bad, I think Luke said as much too. Luke was probably trying to buy time with that 2nd unit, but he really needed to stop the bleeding a little earlier imo.

Chalk this one up to fatigue and the hawks gaining momentum against a unit that clearly didn’t have it and was lucky Lance and KCP hit a couple of 3s to stay afloat.

On to Portland, going to need to be much better against that team.

BTW, how did LeBron not score more in the 4th being guarded by 41 year old Vince Carter? He always tried to get the switch with the big.

Ha ha. I’m not that salty. Just didn’t finish typing out his stats, lol. Maybe a Freudian slip of some type, though.

I’ll leave it at that for now since I’m on my phone.

Lakers won ugly but sometimes I think these are the type of games that build confidence in a young team.

It's easy to win when everything is going right. Pulling off a win when everything seems to be going to the dumps, that's something these young guys still need to become accustomed to.

There young guys need to get accustomed to everything related to winning yet.
Among other things how to put weak opponents quickly away for good.

Pathetic performance! It shouldn't have been that close to begin with. The Hawks are a bad team. The Lakers should have blown them out.

Rather win ugly in a back to back than loose. More lessons to be learned.

BI seems like he is in a ball stopping funk.

Luke needs to realize Lonzo is one of the keys on defense.

Still we are over 500 for the first time this season and that feels good.

BTW, how did LeBron not score more in the 4th being guarded by 41 year old Vince Carter? He always tried to get the switch with the big.

I noticed that too... And commented to my family on it.
Made 'no sense...

It was good to see Chandler geek out after the game winning block and some of the guys join in for a change.

Call this shallow, but none of these guys aside from Chandler, Lebron, and Hart are emo in a good way.

The other people just normally look like they are going through the motions.

Where’s the man love like back when Pau, Kobe, Lamar, and Sasha would express themselves?

If the team just let loose it might help them.

Bye.

Thanks DB!

As sloppy as this game was, there were a lot of things learned & earned by the players and coaches about what it takes to survive, compete & win in the NBA.

Last year we had several "moral victories" This year, we're actually winning those games.

I'm not sure this game deserves the smiley emoticon in the topic title. A bad game between a bad team and a team that hopefully is not as bad as they played. But I guess we'll take it.

Also - It's pretty clear that Lebron already loves having Tyson Chandler on this team.

Thanks DB- this team was really frustrating to watch down the stretch...at one juncture it seemed like we either took just 3s (including LBJ I think on back to back possessions acting like it was practice and the offensive set was him measuring up back to back step back 3s)...or LBJ just dribbling above the 3 point line for an eternity (with carter on him trying to force him into the lane)...just a head scratcher offense by this team to end the game. It was the offense version of what happened when the d went to hell and we watched young rinse and repeat the same thing: dribble towards basket and pull the big out and send a pass to open guy or just take a high percentage shot near the rim.

Lakers seem to have these bizzare lapses on both ends of the court and typically its in the fourth. I really hope they focus on fixing some of that stuff ...they were very fortunate to pull this one out versus a lotto bound team.
