Fwiw, Stephen A. Smith was told that the Lakers called this summer and told him he would have to take a bench role and be committed/work hard.

According the SAS, Melo did not return the Lakers call.

If true, dodged major bullet.

Rachel Nichols

@Rachel__Nichols

Tracy McGrady says Carmelo Anthony should retire - for his own sake. (Interesting to note that TMac retired at 34, the same age Melo is now & has said that after spending his career as his teams' primary scorer, just hanging around in a player-coach/deep-bench role had no appeal)

wouldn't be surprised if that's what ends up happening

Portland is the best fit for him, Melo should go there.

If we signed him, he would be eating into Beasley's minutes...

Yup. He's the best fit for any team we have to play 4x per year. I'd love to see him wind up in Portland. Or with the Clippers.

I particularly enjoy the meltdowns on defense, where the opposing team starts arguing with each other while we get uncontested layups over and over.

From all these options and possibilities the only move that will truly bring excitement is if Melo decides to go back to Denver.

Then again, Melo is undefeated against us this year =)

Sorry LG, I'm taking a washed up Melo over any of our scrubs right now...
If you haven't paid attention, he's truly being made out to be the bad guy. He went to Houston at the cost of knowing him and Dantoni had history and now he's having to pay for that history.

Melo's number on the season are 13ppg 5rpg off the bench, I'd take that in a heartbeat.

Melo>Beasley, Bonga, Caruso, Svi, Williams...
He's not a big, so I won't add in Zubac and Wagner (hasn't played)

A bench of:
Rondo + Hart + Lance + Melo + Chandler... Sorry I'd have to roll with that easily, plus he gives us insurance and a true backup for LBJ which we don't have right now... We could limit Lebron's minutes, maximize his years and truly be a great team over the course of the next 2-3 years.

Now that doesn't mean, I'd actually "Want" Melo on the team, but if I had an opportunity, I'd have to take him over any other Western Conference Team, sorry, if I'm playing GM, I'm not taking that chance...

They aren't even playing, so who cares?

Thing is he might be better on offense, but being the huge liability that he is on defense makes him just as much a net negative as those guys playing and I would argue even more. At least those guys would bust their ass on the court.

You state you would "take his 13/5 in a heartbeat". Are you also accepting the 30mpg he is playing to achieve those stats?

How does Melo fit on this roster? No defense and minimal use on a fast paced team. And a big risk to be a locker room distraction.

All the players you mention are end of the bench guys. Even if we accept the Melo arguably is "better" then them on any given day premise he is not taking their mpg. He is taking mpg from rotation players. Where do you see him getting enough mpg to be happy?

Are the Lakers really supposed to replace Beasley with Melo just so James has someone to sit next to on the plane? Because that is likely the only role he has. Certainly a liability on the floor.

Please no Melo!

We've already played Portland 3 times so he needs to join the Clippers.

I'd rather see Kobe, Kareem, or Elgin back before we signed Melo. Maybe Shaq could be persuaded as well. Hell, maybe Luke should suit up and be player/coach.
