31,420… The numbers are piling up as LeBron James passed Wilt Chamberlain and moved behind Jordan for fifth in the all-time scoring list.

He did it in dominant fashion.

The Lakers fell back by double digits early in the game, but their three shooting came to their rescue as LeBron made all four of his attempts in the first to give the Lakers a 4-point lead.

He then set his sights on getting into the paint and to the line. He attacked aggressively and would pass Wilt on an And-1 one hander between a couple defenders. As the Lakers built the lead, the Blazers had no answer for him as he finished 44-10-9 and 3 blocks. The Lakers took the 126-117 win, giving the Blazers two of their four losses on the season.

While the Lakers continue to string together wins, they suffered a loss tonight as Rajon Rondo fractured his hand in the fourth quarter. They have multiple playmakers, but his loss will be felt. Hopefully, others fill the void to keep them on track.

LeBron -- -- LeBron looking like LeBron. He had been pacing himself a bit this season, but with the three ball dropping early and a big game against a team ahead of us in the standings, he throttled it up. He attacked relentlessly, getting to the line again and again. This was dominant LeBron (maybe some might say playoff LeBron). A superstar game to pass another superstar in the all-time scoring list. He chased down the game ball after this one. Sign it, date it and send it to the I Promise School. The numbers were huge. He sank all four of his three attempts in the first half, including two in a row to close the half. He’d have 16 points, 6 boards and 5 assists at the half. In the second half, he just imposed himself on the helpless Portland defense for another 28 points. Too big, too strong, too skilled. The points were piling up as he got to the line again and again. It wasn’t just a great scoring effort as he flexed the complete game. He also hit the boards all game, he was an assist shy of the triple double. But what about the D? He had blocks at the rim to prevent dunks. The play of the game was probably a rejection of a dunk on one end, then he got the ball in transition on the other, spun around the D and scored the layup. Beastly two-way moment. Check out the efficiency in the stat line. The Stats: He scored 44 points on 13-19 shooting (5-6 from three, 13-15 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 9 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 4 turnovers and no fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: They went under the screen, so he rattled in the wing three from the right side. He missed a baseline turnaround. He hit Kuzma on the cut off a weave play (new wrinkle on that set to get the ball to Kuzma on a UCLA cut). He missed a step-back at the top of the key. He hit Ingram on the skip pass for a three. He dunked on the break. He posted up and choked a wide open layup. He attacked, bumped the big covering off the high screen and scored the layup. He attacked, was stripped, but had an inadvertent whistle erase a layup after gathering the strip. He went behind his back then hit the wing three. He looked off the D and lobbed to McGee in transition for the dunk. He rejected Lillard’s dunk attempt. He hit BI in transition for FTs. He attacked the paint, up-faked once, twice, then drew the FTs, he missed both. He sank a deep pull-up three like it was a FT (or how he should shoot them), kind of a two-for-one with about 25 seconds left. We got the ball back and he drained another three with a second left in the half. Second Half: He attacked the paint and hit the short runner. He attacked, drew the D and bounced to McGee for the slam. He no-looked a pass out of bounds. Brilliant bounce pass through defenders to Kuzma cutting for the reverse. He was fouled on a pull-up, he made both FTs. He worked off the Lonzo screen and sank the 29-footer. He lost a dribble on a push out. He attacked the paint and lobbed to Chandler for the dunk. He was blocked on a three. He grabbed an offensive board, pulled it out, then surprise attacked baseline for a reverse. He hit Lonzo for a three. Great rejection of a dunk attempt on help D. The then got him the ball in transition, he pushed it up, spun and scored a layup. His lob pass was picked off. He looked ticked off at the pressure D, attacked it strong off the screen and scored the And-1 layup over a fleeing Collins, he made the FT. He attacked in transition and drew FTs taking it to the defenders, he made both. He attacked the paint and got hit across the head for FTs, he made both. He deflected a pass to get a stop. He fumbled away a breakaway, And-1 the other way to cut it to 12. He spun, attacked hard and was taken down getting pulled down from behind (flagrant-1), he made both FTs. He faced up, attacked to his right, cut through the defenders and hit the And-1 one-hander to tie Chamberlain, he then passed him on the FT. He threw a pass away. He missed a fade. He was fouled on the perimeter on a blitz, he made both FTs. He blocked Lillard. He attacked the paint and was fouled on the And-1 layup, he made the FT.

Ball -- -- He had 4 offensive boards in the first half, getting in on some tap-out action. He also sank three threes tonight. He had a pull-up from the elbow going left for his other make. He’s shooting .362 from three on 4.5 attempts this season. His attempts per 36 are actually up over last year when he shot .305. So that three ball continues to look strong. Everything else is a bit of an adventure (sometimes even the three ball). If Rondo’s going to be out for a while, I might stagger the rotation some to get Lonzo to run some point for the bench. We can slide in KCP or Hart early on in the rotations and then bring Lonzo back for the second unit. Hopefully, the silver lining in Rondo’s injury is some better playmaking from others. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-11 shooting (3-5 from three) to go with 6 boards (5 offensive), 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He hit JaVale for the score off the two-man game to start. He was blocked on a floater. His layup was blocked. Step-back three off the dribble from the left wing that didn’t hit rim. Step-back three on a catch to knock it down from the corner. He sank a wing three in transition, stepping to his left from the corner. He threw a kickout away. Second Half: He swished an elbow pull-up going to his left. He was called for an illegal screen, basically ran into a man, not sure he was setting the screen. He iso’d and airballed a fallaway (stay in yo lane!). He drained a catch-and-shoot wing three next time down (that’s more like it). He swiped a perimeter pass, pushed it up and was blocked out of bounds. He attacked and was swatted (needed to use his body better). He attacked off the kickout and hit KCP for the three. He missed a corner three.

Ingram -- -- He had 11 points on 3-7 shooting in the first half, making his only three attempt (take more, please, and less break-rhythm midrange shots). In the second half, he had a nice attack off the three line where he didn’t settle for the midrange, instead drew the opposing big, then found McGee for the dunk. That’s the play he needs to make more of. He’s been settling too much for the midrange instead of being a threat at the rim. Last year, BI was averaging 3.9 assists per game. He’s at just 1.8 per game this year. So this is really where his game needs to pick up. He had 4 assists tonight getting back to that pace of last year. He made one of his three threes tonight. (His final miss was a bit forced trying to get LeBron his triple-double). Prior to the game, he was shooting .353 from three (0.7-1.9 attempts). Nice to see him have a postup possession where he didn’t settle for a turnaround fade. He had a deep catch, attacked across the lane and scored. More of that, please. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-15 shooting (1-3 from three, 4-5 form the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He hit an elbow turnaround over CJ in the high post. He iso’d on CJ next time down, attacked and drew FTs, he made one. He attacked and threw a tough pass to McGee in the paint, but JaVale was able to score off it. He got tapped on a 16-footer. He sank a wing three off a skip pass. He went too early before the D cleared out on a mismatch and missed a turnaround instead of a layup because the lane was clogged. He missed a pull-up midrange jumper in transition. He kicked out to Kuzma for the open three. He missed a break-rhythm baseline midrange jumper (just shoot it). He attacked in transition, took contract and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He filled the lane on the break and drew FTs on the throwdown attempt, he made both. Second Half: He jab stepped on iso and swished the wing jumper. He kept his man in jail and hit the short pull-up in the paint. He pounded the dribble and bricked the turnaround. He attacked off the three line, didn’t settled, drew the D and hit McGee for the dunk. He jab stepped and missed the wing jumper. Deep catch, he attacked across the lane and made the short one. He missed a three after he pulled out an offensive board. He attacked and couldn’t finish. He couldn’t get LeBron’s assist on a three.

Kuzma -- -- Didn’t like the D in the first half (some miscommunications, got backdoored and gave up some other scores), but he did start to hit the boards at least. He was out of the rotation, however, in the fourth most likely because of that soft D. LeBron moved into the PF spot. If he’s not killing it offensively, I think you need to do this more. His D hurts us too much sometimes. Kuzma sank one of his two threes tonight. Prior to the game, he was shooting just .292 from three (1.6-5.5 attempts), so limited attempts from three tonight. He scored a couple layups off cuts with the ball in LeBron’s hands. They run a lot of UCLA cuts for him (one off the weave tonight for a score). He also had a nice backdoor cut where he parked his man behind a screener and cut baseline to take the pass. The Stats: He scored y points on 3-8 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 5 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He gave up an open three to his man. He scored a layup off a UCLA cut off a weave. He was blocked on a layup. He missed a layup but McGee cleaned up the drive. He couldn’t finish a layup. He got caught in the air and threw a pass away (didn’t hustle back in transition, either). He missed a three straight away. No communication with BI and they gave up an open three. He got backdoored for a layup. He drained an open wing three on a kickout. Second Half: He swiped a ball on the drive. He cut baseline and LeBron fired the bounce pass through the D to him for the layup.

McGee -- -- He had 14 point in the first half off 7-10 shooting and would finish with 20. The production we’re getting from him at his contract amount is pretty amazing. It’s a good situation for him with some great, willing passers on this team. Defensively, he had a couple of blocks late in the game. Most of this stuff is in the halfcourt and will be huge come playoff time as they improve on their execution. He and LeBron tonight had 64 points on 31 attempts. Super efficiency from our two starting vets. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 9-12 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He gathered a pass that bounced off his chest and banked in the runner. He gathered a tricky pass in the paint and hit the jumphook. He short armed a jumphook. He choked a lob layup. He crashed the glass when his man left him and he cleaned up the dribble penetration miss. He tipped in a missed runner from KCP. He couldn’t finish a finger roll in the paint. He hit a floater when Lance found him in the lane. He ball faked, took a dribble and slammed over his man. He got hit in the head with a pass, dunk the other way. He dunked off the no-look lob from LeBron. Second Half: He deflected a pass on the two-man D to help get a stop. He dunked off the bounce pass in the paint from LeBron. He dunked off the drive and dish from Ingram. He swatted a layup out of bounds. He blocked a layup. He was fouled on a lob throwdown attempt, he made both FTs.

Hart -- -- He sank a couple of threes for his points tonight. He played some of his usual backup PF. I love it when a big feels like he has to take advantage of him in the post and then bad things happen. I think it was Leonard tonight he tried to post up him and settled for the airball turnaround on the baseline. Hart just kills opposing bigs in the post. It’s been pretty impressively lately. Some reasonable D from Hart on the perimeter tonight, as well, which was nice to see. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-7 shooting (2-6 from three) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He sank a wing three when Lance fed him. He blocked a big at the rim trying to throw down. Good job going down off the screen fighting over the top to draw the foul and get the stop. He missed a tough three coming off a screen. Not close on a wing three. He grabbed a defensive board, pushed out and fell at the rim with no call. Second Half: Sloppy kickout, out of bounds. He forced a big into an airball turnaround. He swished a three in transition. He was called for inbounds violation (not sure about that). He missed a wing three. He missed a sideline three.

Rondo -- He fractured his hand in the fourth quarter and will be out for a few weeks according to Luke. He hit his hand on the floor at midcourt and then went to the locker room shortly later. He missed all four of his attempts in the first half, and didn’t shoot in the second half. But he was a steadying force for the team in the fourth quarter as he found guys and orchestrated the offense. Time for the team to step up with our first big injury of the season. “We all have to pick him up in his absence,” LeBron said. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and no fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a short one. He pushed it up and missed a wide open elbow jumper. He swiped a ball from a big on a reach around. He missed a wide open wing three. He couldn’t finish a layup in early offense. Second Half: He hit Hart for a three in transition. He lobbed to McGee for FTs. He swiped a ball from a big. Handoff to KCP for a three. Illegal D to give up a tech.

Chandler -- -- He had a chest contusion in the first half that sent him to the locker room after defending the post on a play. Apparently, he got hit in a previous injury from practice. He came back and played fine in the second half. Quiet night for him in this one. Some tricky defensive coverages with the Blazer guards but he had his moments. His one basket tonight was off a perfect lob pass from LeBron. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-1 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist and no fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: Screen assist to free up Lance. Second Half: He threw down a perfect lob from LeBron. He grabbed an offensive board and was wrapped up for FTs, he made both.

Stephenson -- -- Well, with Rondo out with the broken hand, we’re going to put the ball in Lance’s hands more. Perhaps we bring up AC for some more traditional PG work, as well. But I think we’ll see more Lance and BI trying to playmake as well as more consistent minutes for Lonzo. Lance had been shooting a respectable percentage from three, but went 0-5 tonight (one was a heave from half court). Good job on the glass again. He scored his two buckets on a layup and a midrange shot. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-8 shooting (0-5 from three) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 13 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He hit Hart for a wing three. He swished the pull-up 15-footer off the high screen. He missed an open wing three. He traveled with no call then was stripped in the paint. He hit McGee for the floater. He missed a three off the chin series. Second Half: Near miss on a pull-up at halfcourt at the buzzer. He missed a three straight away. He scored a layup on the break. He didn’t hit rim on a three in transition.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Really liked the two-way game from him tonight. He got into the passing lanes for steals. He played tight on the Blazer guards. And he was draining threes. We get KCP rolling and teams are in trouble. He’s been slowly getting his game on track. First ten or so, he was a non-factor. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-8 shooting (3-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He sank a pull-up 20-footer off the high screen. He missed a runner. Second Half: He swiped a pass but missed the layup on the break. He swished a wing three on a kickout. He jumped a passing lane to swipe a perimeter pass and was fouled in transition, he made both FTs. He sank a rainbow three straight away. XXX He missed a corner three. He sank a three off a handoff moving to his left in transition. Not close on a FT jumper over a big.

Walton -- -- They trailed 18-12 when Luke called a timeout. They had gotten out to a good start, then started to get lit up on D, giving up some open threes. A 13-2 run… Another timeout down 8, he brought in Rondo, Chandler and Hart to go with Ingram and LeBron… Down 9 when LeBron sat for Lance… Ingram out for KCP, Lakers down 8… The Lakers trailed 33-26 after the first quarter. Blazers were 6-9 from three… They looked like they were about to cut it to 3, then the lead quickly ballooned back up to 10 and Luke called a timeout… Starters with Hart instead of a C out of that timeout... Chandler in for Hart out of that timeout, Lakers down 10… Chandler to the locker room… The Lakers finished the half strong behind LeBron hitting some threes… The Lakers led 59-55 at the half. Despite the hot three shooting to start for the Blazers, the Lakers would edge them out making 9-16 to their 9-17 from three. Just 4 Lakers turnovers… Hart in for Kuzma, Lakers up 7… LeBron dominating… The Lakers led 97-89 heading into the fourth… He started a McGee, Hart, Stephenson, KCP, Rondo lineup… This unit extended the lead to 16 to force a timeout after a couple of minutes… Refs inserting themselves into the game, Lakers up 14… Luke called a timeout shortly later when the play got a little sloppy. Lead still 14 with 7 minutes left… He went with Chandler, LeBron, Ingram, KCP and Rondo… After a turnover, Rondo to the locker room for Ball, Lakers up 12. Uhoh… Lakers taking the air out of the ball so Luke called a timeout… More LeBron to take the win… Good job with LeBron’s minutes tonight. He ran him when he was hot through the third quarter. Got him some rest, brought him back at the right time and LBJ finished with 36 minutes for the night…

Chandler with no fouls? That definitely can't be right. He got one or two that were pretty bogus.

What is the latest word on Rondo’s injury

Fascinating that many say that LeBron should be doing more, then we have Paul Pierce saying that he is concerned that he has to work this hard in these early season games

BI, Kuzma and Zo often seem in “Spectator Mode” when they are on the court with LeBron

Thanks DB! Great to see the Lakers go up 2-1 in the season series with Portland! Excellent recap as always.

Here's hoping the Lakers can cover for Rondo's absence and keep this winning streak alive!

Thanks, DB.

I too anticipate seeing the ball in Lance's hands a lot more with Rondo's injury. He was rather impressive filling that role during the suspension... hopefully it wasn't fools gold.

I also think this would be an ideal time to swap Hart for BI in the starting lineup. Hart's D has been disappointingly inconsistent thus far, but between his distance shooting and willingness to at least play D, I think he fits much better with that starting unit.

Ingram's inability to stay in front of smaller guards and his perpetually dying on screens, coupled with his newly discovered black holery and ball stopping (and awful shot selection) really have no place with the starters right now. Let him initiate a bit with the second unit and I think you'll see his mindset start to veer back toward creating for others. It's rather unsettling to see the kid who two years ago was so hyper-deferential becoming so myopically and predictably selfish nearly every time the ball hits his hands. He did a little bit of this at the beginning of last year -- apparently in an effort to apply all of the wonderful things he learned during his first offseason -- but thus far this year he's taken it to a whole new level.

I fully realize there's no way this would ever happen with the way the Lakers have been playing lately, but I nonetheless think the team would be much better served for, even before Rondo's injury, but especially now.

Thanks DB

First super dominate game by Lebron

8-6 feels pretty good after a slow start

Nice to see KCP starting to find his game

BI playing some back up PG may be good for him.

Like the idea of Ball, Hart and KCP playing some on 2nd unit.

KCP was really key in the 4th quarter, kept Lebron on the bench longer, and we didn’t lose the lead and have a nail-biter.

I tend to agree with your thoughts on Ingram. It's not pretty when Ingram tries to force the action through ball stopping and ISO. In terms of silly smartphone games he tends to look like a cross between Daddy Long Legs and Steppy Pants.

I'm hoping he will look more fluid out there if he can switch his mindset to be a point forward distributor. Ideally, off the bench to fill-in for Rondo.

Thanks DB. Excellent as always.

My guess is that Beasley or Svi get some more minutes with the second unit rather than swap Hart and BI. Lonzo will play more and Lance will get some time as the lead guard on the second unit.

If we see Svi get minutes over Beasley it likely means Beasley will get cut or traded when eligible.

Dame as LeBron's partner in PnG would look so good. He'd be the Kobe to LeBron's Shaq
