Reunion Night… Back in Cleveland, a much different reception for LeBron James versus the first time he left them for Miami. Since then, he returned, got the city a ring and now could part ways without the rioting, burned jerseys and the rest of that circus that happened after “The Decision.” He had a standing ovation from Cleveland fans tonight.

“They showed their appreciation,” LeBron said. “Not only for myself, but for my friends and family, it was a great moment.”

The two teams were tied going into the fourth, but the Lakers fell back by 9 with 5 minutes left to go. They have struggled when they lose the battle of possessions. They gave up 15 offensive boards to the Cavs (10 to Thompson) and then only forced 3 turnovers against the Cavs. (The Cavs, in fact, were the only team not to have a turnover in the first half this season.) That resulted in 102 total shots for the Cavs vs. 78 for the Lakers. You shouldn’t win in that kind of situation.

Combine that with Jordan Clarkson catching fire and you had a more competitive game than it should have been. But they locked in on D down the stretch, forcing misses, getting boards and then methodically manufacturing points down the stretch. The Lakers had a 16-3 run in the closing minutes of the game.

“They played a heck of a game, but we kept our composure,” LeBron said. Credit KCP with knocking down four clutch FTs down the stretch to ice the game as the Lakers won 109-105.

The Lakers push their record to 10-7, three games over .500 for the first time in five years.

LeBron -- -- He had 18 points on 8-11 shooting, 8 rebounds and 4 assists in the first half. Then kind of cruised a little in the third quarter before turning it on again down the stretch. In the fourth he manufactured a bunch of FTs down the stretch as well as hitting a big three on iso to help the Lakers climb out of their hole and secure the win. A little sloppy earlier in the game with some of the passes and decisions, but he cleaned that up. I’m really liking some of the sequences between him and Lonzo lately. A lot of non-verbal stuff where they are thinking the same thing. The Stats: He scored 32 points on 11-20 shooting (2-6 from three, 8-12 from the line) to go with 14 boards, 7 assists, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He attacked the rim, missed and tipped in the follow through. He missed an elbow jumper. He back cut his man, took the pass and scored the layup. He scored a layup when Ball fed him on the move over the top of the D. He fired a cross-court pass out of bounds, unforced error. Offensive foul on a spin using an off-arm. He sank a deep three, just getting it off before the shotclock. He hit McGee in transition for a dunk. He attacked, spun and scored the layup. He bullied his way to the rim for a layup in early offense. He threaded a pass to McGee for a dunk. He sank a corner jumper. He attacked from the wing, rose up and threw down. He attacked on a push out and drew FTs with 1.2 left in the half, he made one. Second Half: His pass was deflected, turnover. He missed a wing three. He forced a pass that wasn’t there, turnover. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. He iso’d, backed down Nwaba and drew FTs, he made one. Full-court pass to Lonzo for a layup. He missed a deep three. He couldn’t finish a drive in transition. He dunked on the break with KCP. He iso’d and missed a fade in the lane. He attacked in transition and kicked to Kuzma for a three. He drew FTs in transition when BI found him, he made both. He sank a three on iso out of a timeout. He attacked in transition for FTs, he made both. He drew FTs on a swing through from 30 feet out, he made one. He missed a step-back three. Fouled intentionally with 19.6 left, he made one FT. XXX

Ball -- -- One of his better games of the season. There was a stretch in the third quarter where he came alive with the ball in his hands on several possessions to push it up court for scores. This was Lonzo as an offensive impact player, pushing pace, scoring and causing problems. They need to play that back to him prior to every game to see what kind of aggression he needs to play with. Once you combine that with all the other little things he does on the court, then you see a big impact for the team. Later in the game in this one, he over-passed when he had a chance for a reverse in transition and threw it away. LeBron looked a little disappointed on that. Hopefully, he gets into his head and keeps riding on him to finish. A couple big plays by Lonzo to close the game. He hit McGee for a score in the paint off a bang-bang passing sequence with LeBron. Then, he kept an offensive board alive to regain a possession and force the Cavs into a foul situation. Winning plays. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 7-11 shooting (1-2 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 6 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He hit LeBron cutting down the lane for a layup. Pocket pass to Kuzma out of the timeout for the dunk (more of this please, ball reversal to the two-man game). He hit Kuzma trailing the break for a dunk. Bad idea on a full-court pass, easy turnover against the double team. He bricked a step-back three. He attacked, spun, bricked, got it back and scored the short putback. He passed up an open wing three to hit Kuzma for a challenged corner miss. He worked the iced D, sealed his man and scored a layup when they were concerned about McGee. He hit LeBron for a corner jumper. He sank a wing three. Second Half: He attacked from the wing and hammered over a man. He spotted McGee under the hoop in transition for the dunk. He leaked out, took the outlet and scored a layup. He attacked in transition and scored an And-1 layup, he missed the FT badly. He pushed it out with speed and scored a layup on the next possession. Another quick attack in transition and he couldn’t get it to go, but we kept it alive. He attacked from the corner and couldn’t finish the layup. Called for a push-off when he just sealed his man, erased a layup, bad call. He slapped a ball loose from Larry on the perimeter and it led to a LeBron dunk. He stripped JC on one end, but didn’t try to finish a reverse on the other, instead he threw it away. He took a pass in the corner, attacked and fed McGee for a layup. He kept an offensive board alive with 22.9 left, Lakers up 2 (huge offensive possession).

Ingram -- -- The stats look a little better than Ingram’s game did. A lot of midrange iso ball tonight. Just not pretty. A couple things I did like: First, Ingram knocking down a three on the catch. He does not actively hunt threes and this one he was forced to take with the clock low, but anything to help the confidence from beyond the three line. We need him thinking about not just shooting threes, but looking for them. Relocating himself to hit them. Getting himself ready to catch and shoot, instead of catch and survey, then pound the dribble. He got that shot off pretty quick. That’s what we want to see. The other, I liked seeing him actually get somewhere in the post where he was able to hit a much shorter turnaround in the middle of the paint over a smaller man. He settles far too much against smaller defenders because BI just isn’t strong. He often makes every defender into a miniature version of Josh Hart in the post. So getting around them or getting to a better spot on the floor for that turnaround is what I’d like to see more of. So despite some of the awful iso ball, some good moments. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-10 shooting (1-1 from three, 3-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: He fed McGee rolling for a dunk. He missed McGee wide open under the hoop. He attacked shortly later and drew FTs on the baseline, he missed both. He curled into the paint off the dribble and scored the layup. He attacked Nance off the screen at the end of the quarter and missed a poor, fading one hander. He dribbled to the sideline and stepped on it, turnover. He attacked and charged, turnover. He hit McGee on the two-man game for a reverse. Second Half: Awful, one-footed fade on a drive and he missed badly, McGee kept it alive and Ingram dunked off that. He gave up an And-1 on a jumper. He swished a three on a kickout. He missed a midrange pull-up in transition, uggh, layup the other way. He attacked at the end of the quarter and got the call in the middle of the paint, he made both FTs. He attacked in transition, spun and drew FTs, he made one. He iso’d and hit the pull-up from midrange. He missed as challenge midrange on iso. Smaller man on him, he backed him down and hit the turnaround in the middle of the paint. He iso’d and missed a long wing jumper. He found LeBron in transition for FTs.

Kuzma -- -- Some good moments by Kuzma defensively in this one. He had a couple of great blocks where you were like, was that McGee? We need more of that from him. He also kind of helped cool JC off later in the fourth quarter. Throw in a few boards and you’ve got a little bit of a two-way effort from him. I’ll take it. Nice to see him hit a couple of threes in this one. It felt like a more controlled offensive game. If he can be a little more selective and efficient next to LeBron, that will help the overall ball movement. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-9 shooting (2-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He blocked a layup on help D. He dunked off the two-man sequence with Lonzo. He attacked the paint and traveled. He dunked trailing the break when Lonzo found him. He drained a corner three. He missed a corner three. Nice challenge on his man to get a stop. He missed a wing three. He missed a turnaround in the lane. He got backed up and gave up an easy layup. He posted up on the other end and was stripped. He missed an open corner three. Second Half: He made a tech FT. He rejected a layup. He made a tech FT. He attacked and got hammered with no call, wow. He swished a corner three on a kickout.

McGee -- -- He didn’t miss a shot tonight, going 6-6. His mobility was a bit more effective than Chandler’s defense. The Lakers even went small tonight trying to find something that worked. They got owned by Thompson and his 10 offensive boards. JaVale had a couple big plays in crunch time with a lefty layup off a great passing sequence from LeBron to Lonzo to JaVale. He also rejected a layup in the final minute. John Ireland asking him what he remembers about that block on Osman. “I remember him driving, me blocking it,” McGee said. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-6 shooting to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: Illegal screen, turnover. He dunked when Ingram found him rolling to the rim. He hit LeBron back cutting his man for an uncontested layup. He swatted a layup to ignite a break. He swatted another on the next defensive stand. Reverse jam on the break when LeBron found him. Dunk when LeBron found him on a cut. He reversed off the two-man game with Ingram. He blocked a layup. Second Half: He dunked when Lonzo found him in transition. Lefty layup with a minute-plus left when Lonzo hit him in the middle of the paint. He rejected a layup on the other end.

Hart -- -- Probably the first time he and Kuzma combined for 5 blocks manning our PF spot. He’s been superb at challenging shots around the rim this year. He also had a block on the perimeter, as well, tonight. The three ball wasn’t dropping for him tonight, so that limited his scoring. He got a midrange pull-up to drop (those are usually misses) and he finished a layup trailing the break. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 4 boards, 3 blocks, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He stripped a man, then blocked him from behind shortly later. He missed a three. He blocked a perimeter shot. On the other end, turnover as he spun in the lane and was stripped. He missed a wide open wing three next time down. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He attacked off the three line and hit the pull-up jumper. He trailed the break and Lance found him for the layup.

Chandler -- -- He scored on a putback tip-in and knocking down a couple of FTs. (The Lakers made 20-28 from the line, 71.4% tonight). Quiet night from Chandler. He had some moments defensively, but I think with Clarkson heating up from the perimeter and midrange that made him a little less effective defensively. So Luke was searching for defensive answers and essentially sat Chandler later in the game. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-3 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards (2 offensive)), 1 assist and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He was fouled on the offensive glass, he made both FTs. He missed a layup, but tipped in the follow. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Stephenson -- -- When he’s on the floor, the ball is mostly in Ingram’s hands and generally not moving a lot. That second unit has some real issues with the two of them. Stephenson struggled to knock down shots tonight and was a -14 in just 14 minutes. Clarkson was lighting us up and we didn’t take advantage of him on the defensive end. Stephenson’s only score was an And-1 attacking against JC. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-6 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists and no fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He missed a wing three on a skip pass. Swing pass to KCP for a three. He attacked, spun and missed. He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He missed a wing three. Second Half: Easy And-1 layup off the poor D from Clarkson, he made the FT. He attacked with speed in transition, got to the rim and kicked it back to the trailing Hart for the layup. He attacked, took contact, hung and got no call on the miss. He attacked off the catch and hit KCP for the corner three.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He’s the guy we’d like to draw up plays for to get the ball for FTs in end game foul situations. Only Laker who really seems steady from the line right now (only missed a couple this season and is shooting 94%). They ran a nice ATO for him with 9.6 seconds left to get him an open catch in the corner, he was fouled and made both FTs to ice it. He made all four attempts in the last 15 seconds to help the Lakers close. If he was shaky there, we’d be in a little trouble. “I’m shooting 94 percent for a reason. Yeah, I want to take them,” he said. He sank three threes and continues to give the Lakers some much needed consistency offensively. After making a couple of threes in the second half, he went a bit cold on his next several attempts, but finished strong hitting his FTs. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 3-8 shooting (3-6 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He sank a corner three off a swing pass. He charged on a drive from the corner to start the second quarter. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He bumped a man, stepped back and hit the corner three. He swished a corner three on a kickout from Lance. He missed a transition three. He missed a 17-footer straight away. He missed a wing three. He attacked off the three line and missed a floater. Intentionally fouled, he made both FTs. He sank a couple more FTs.

Walton -- -- Chandler in for McGee with 5 minutes left, Lakers up 1. Hart in for Kuzma… KCP in for Ingram… A series of unforced turnovers by the Lakers. Timeout down 1… LeBron out for Stephenson… Ingram in for Lonzo down 3… The Lakers trailed 28-24. They had 6 turnovers, the Cavs 0 in the first quarter… Two turnovers to start the quarter… 9-0 turnover difference, Lakers down 9. Timeout Lakers… Starters with KCP instead of Ingram. This unit chipped away at the lead… Ingram back in with 3:32 for KCP… Chandler and Hart in for McGee (three fouls) and Kuzma with 2 minutes left, down 4… The Lakers trailed 52-49. No turnovers for the Cavs in the first half… Lakers getting killed on the offensive glass. Possession battle is not in their favor… KCP in for Ingram who was awful… He sat Ball for Stephenson… Down 6 when LeBron sat for BI with 2:14 left… They tied it up 81-81 going into the fourth… Same unit to start the fourth. Chandler, Hart, Ingram, KCP, Stephenson… Timeout down 3 after giving up a dunk… McGee, Kuzma and LeBron in to go with KCP and Lance… Clarkson killing the Lakers. Need to make him play D. Down 9, timeout again… Lakers bring in Hart and go with LeBron/Kuzma at C… MCGee in for Hart… They cut it to 3 with 3:27 left to force a timeout… McGee, Kuzma, LeBron, Ingram, Ball starters unit… Looks like Kuzma on Clarkson. Wild drive by JC and he gets benched… Up 2 with 23 seconds left, KCP in for McGee, LeBron fouled intentionally… A 16-3 run in the close for the Lakers… Nice inbounds play to KCP to get him open for the intentional FTs to ice it…

Thanks, DB. Always look forward to your recaps. Amazing job!

John Ireland should just stop asking questions. I'm not even sure what he gets out of them? Maybe he just likes being in the locker room or something.

Asking the same question over and over is a bit lazy. Some of the players definitely cringe at the questions, as well. He should just take some notes during the game about what he wants to ask each player instead of winging it.

Thanks DB! Good to see a win. I thought this would be an easy game, wrong on that count.

KCP - another good game lately.

Lonzo - Great to see the aggressive streak in his offense! Not sure what he ate for breakfast but the Lakers better score some more of it. Defense, rebounding and facilitating for others didn't skip a beat while he went on the attack. Good to see.

Great write-up as always!

Thanks DB

Nice to see KCP string together a couple of decent games.

BI and Kuz still struggling to find their rhythm in the offense.

Lonzo showed off some speed tonight I thought he played great.

Bench unit was playing really well until Rondo got hurt now they seemed to have lost the edge.

I don't know how we won this game. I think the whole team partied the night before and playing hangover but a win is a win. But man, this: three games over .500 for the first time in five years

When the haters are back, you know the Lakers are good

I mean, you probably take road wins any way they come, but playing with fire against an offensively inept team that also happens to be the worst defensive team in the league isn't too encouraging. The probably looked ahead on the schedule and thought this would be an easy game. Loved Ball's play in this one, but he does seem to have some mental issues on the offensive side of the ball. His defense was wonderful, though.

Was getting my itchy trigger finger on the #fireluke movement until LBJ went beast mode. Still disappointed this team struggles in these types of games following a couple days of rest.

As teams are playing Kuzma differently because of their scouting, it will be interesting to see how he is adjusting to how other teams are defending him. It appears that Kuzma (along with BI) aren't as efficient in their shooting, compared to last year as they are adjusting to how LeBron learns where they want the ball.

Good to see that his defense is picking up and he is not missing as many defensive assignments. If his defense didn't pick up, he becomes a liability if his offense is not there.

Great job, DB = as always!!!
