Self-Inflicted Wounds… You knew with how the Magic handled the Lakers last time they played that this would be a tough one.

The Lakers shot 58 percent in the first half. Sounds great, but they had 14 turnovers and shot just 5-11 from the line so the lead was only a single point. Sloppy stuff, passes out of bounds, moving screens as well as the occasional outlet picked off. Self-inflicted wounds.

“We got to get back to valuing the basketball,” Luke said.

In the third quarter, they fell back by double digits as the Magic methodically worked their two-man sequences and abused some lazy Laker defense. Meanwhile the Lakers shot blanks, missing eight straight at one point (fust 5-21 Laker shooting in the third quarter).

In the fourth, the small ball second unit trimmed the 15-point lead to 5 before LeBron came back in with 7:40 left. They chipped away at the lead over the next several minutes with some of their better D in the game (especially on the high screens, credit to KCP). With the effort, they tied it up with a couple minutes left.

It proved to be just too big a hole to climb out of. The offense missed multiple threes down the stretch, and the Magic were able to get a couple scores at the rim to pull out the 108-104 win in the final minute.

The Lakers struggle with perimeter shooting bigman and their drop coverage defense. Vucevic scored 31 and assisted on 7 more baskets.

The Lakers held the turnovers down to just 4 in the second half. Looking back, you’ve got to be a little irritated at the number of points they left at the line (11 missed FTs in a close game hurts). LeBron, unfortunately, had big numbers in both those categories (leading the team with 6 turnovers and 5 misses from the line).

“We’re killing ourselves,” Luke said of the missed FTs and turnovers.

LeBron -- -- I’d like to see a couple more post-ups a game from LeBron, especially late in the game when our offense stalls. Get penetration by the pass to the post, let him work and/or distribute on inside-out sequences or to cutters. The offense just becomes very predictable right now and we settle far too much. Not a great game from LeBron. He looked tired at times, especially on D. He had 4 turnovers in the first half and finished with 6. It felt like he overpassed a couple times at the rim instead of finishing. The FT shooting was also poor. “We’ll live with those,” Luke said of the missed threes down the stretch. “We haven’t been taking care of the ball in the last two games,” LeBron said. He led team with 6. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 8-14 shooting (2-7 from three, 6-11 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 7 assists, 1 block, 6 turnovers and 4 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He sealed his man, took the post entry and dunked. He threw a pass out of bounds expecting Ingram to say in the corner. His transition bounce pass was picked off. He got a defender in the air, then drew contact for FTs, he missed both. He missed the tough three on the inbounds. He attacked, spun to lose his man and dunked. He took the outlet, spun to get around a defender and powered in the And-1 layup through contact, he made the FT. He posted up and beasted his way for a layup. He put his man in jail off the screen, then fed McGee for the dunk. Off-ball charge. He fed Kuzma coming off a screen for a dunk. He got contact on a drive and drew FTs, he made one. No switch, he watched a man open under the hoop and gave up a dunk (literally walking on D even though he saw him). He iso’d and swished a deep step-back three at the halftime buzzer. Second Half: He missed a three in transition. He was called for a travel. He gambled and came up empty to give up a dunk. He missed a wing three. Awful call on a great defensive play to slide around his man and knock a ball loose. He was fouled on a reverse, he made one FT. He hit Lance for a three. He fouled before an inbounds pass was made, uggh. He drew FTs on a reach. He measured and drained a deep three. He dunked on the break off the block and feed from KCP. He overpassed and threw away a layup. He missed a three next time down. He attacked in transition, no one picked him up so he took it for a dunk. He hit KCP for the open three. He attacked the paint and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a wing three on iso. He couldn’t stop momentum on a closeout and let a guard blow by him for a layup. Might have overpassed again at the rim.

Ball -- -- He had 8 boards in the first half and would finish with 10. Always a good sign when he’s active on the glass. He sank a three and had moments where he was aggressively attacking. He didn’t play in the fourth quarter, although Luke said he wanted to get him back in. “That group created some energy and KCP was flying around,” Luke said of why Lonzo didn’t close. That was a big reason why they came back, for sure, so I can’t get too mad as Lonzo wasn’t defensing as strongly. You might have gotten some rest for Ingram in that fourth after LeBron came back, but I can’t be disappointed when the unit they had was making a comeback. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-9 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 10 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 29 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He didn’t bite on a fake, then rejected his man in the post. He hit a short one in the paint coming off a screen. He ballwatched and his man got the offensive board. He crossed over and missed the long pull-up against a big. He pushed out a blocked shot with speed, turned help defenders around and scored a layup. He crossed over and missed a layup he should have had. His outlet was picked off. He attacked on iso, spun to lose his man and scored a layup. Not patient and he was blocked in the post (a second later he had a cutter). Second Half: He missed a bank in the paint. He fed McGee in the paint for FTs. He sank a wing three out of a timeout. He missed a wide open three.

Ingram -- – Really up and down game from BI. His post work in the first half changed up from the poor turnaround fades we see to his more effective face-up and attack. He was still sloppy with the ball with three first half turnovers. Then, in the third quarter he combined the turnover action with the poor fallaway post ups or midrange misses and he helped bleed the Lakers. After sitting and returning to start the fourth, he helped the Lakers trim the lead down to 5 points with the small ball unit. BI was the tip of the spear on the offensive attack with LBJ sitting. He disappeared a bit when LeBron returned. Luke did a decent job staggering their minutes in the second half. Defensively, we put him on Augustin to control that in the fourth. Feels like Brandon is starting to slowly figure out some things on the offensive end. Still got to fix the turnovers and reduce the poor ideas. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 7-14 shooting (0-2 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 5 turnovers and 4 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He lost the handle on a pass, turnover. His outlet was picked off. He curled into the paint off the dribble, imposed his size and scored the And-1 lefty layup, he missed the FT. He missed a layup, got it back and missed the reverse. He missed a corner three. He stripped a man, pushed it out and scored a layup using his length. His step-through was blocked by the help D, but I like him not settling for the turnaround. He was called for a clear-out foul on a layup attempt. Second Half: He got his man in jail, slowly attacked and banked over the help. He settled for a long fallaway turnover in the post, bad miss. Cross-court pass in transition, turnover. He drew FTs in transition, he made one. He missed an open three. Hesitation and missed a lob opportunity, the missed the midrange pull-up. He attacked and scored an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He iso’d, got into the paint, spun and hit the turnaround. He iso’d and was stripped for points the other way on a reach. He got the ball back quickly in transition, faded across the lane and hit the tough And-1. He sank a pull-up from midrange, getting wide open (rare he has that much time).

Kuzma -- -- “Just trying to get back to my ways and be super aggressive,” he said afterward. He had 13 points and 4 assists in the first quarter. That’s having a hand in 21 of the Lakers first 29 points. They got the ball to him in the low post on the first possession for an easy score and he was off to the races from there. Good to see a new play call for him to start the game. Hopefully, we can see him string together some more of these games because he’s edged up his defensive work (he had some good rotations in this game, but one of several players to also give up dunks). He also changed up his FT routine at some point, no longer holding the ball on his side. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 7-15 shooting (2-4 from three, 5-7 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 35 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He went to work in the post to start the game and scored easily. He couldn’t finish a layup on the break. He made a tech FT. He attacked off the three lane, changed directions and scored a layup. He spotted LeBron under the hoop for a layup. He sank a wing three after scrambling the D on a switch. He posted up in transition, spun and scored a layup. He bounced to McGee on the break after missing a lob for a dunk. He found McGee for another dunk. He lost the ball on the break. He airballed a midrange shot. He attacked strong in transition and drew FTs, he made one. Great switch and he swiped the pass, pushed it out and then hit Chandler trailing for a dunk. Excellent high-speed attack with a few seconds left and he hit a floater at the end of the quarter. He curled off the screen, took the pass and dunked. He missed a bank in transition. Second Half: He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made one (changed his FT routine). Wild baseline fade and he missed. He got backdoored for a dunk. He missed a drive and the easier putback. He attacked off the three line and earned FTs, he made both. He sank a wing three. He missed an open three next time down. He missed a three.

McGee -- -- “He covered up some of our mistakes,” Luke said, but mentioned Vucevic got off and the team as a whole did a poor job. He had 6 blocks in the first half, finished with 7 and probably should have had 8 but got called for a weak goaltend. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-9 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 7 blocks, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He erased a layup on help. D. Another good challenge to force a miss. He took the bounce pass on the break and dunked. He missed a jumphook, went up and under for the putback dunk. He rejected a post attempt. He blocked a drive. He missed a short one, not quite ready for a lob from Lonzo, I think (Lonzo may have thrown it early). Illegal screen as he looked to cut and ran into a player. Great help D to reject a layup from behind. He dunked off the drive and dish from LeBron off the two-man game. He dunked off the drive and dish from Lance out of the timeout. He erased a layup. He sagged off his man unnecessarily and gave up a three. Second Half: He blocked a dunk attempt. He changed a shot in the paint with a challenge. He drew FTs on the feed from Lonzo, he made both. He missed a three trailing the break. Not a good shot. Called for a goaltend, wow, close. He gave up a layup. He choked a lob layup on the break, uggh. He sank a jumphook in the middle of the paint. He gave up an easy post score. XXX

Hart -- -- The injury has him playing pretty quietly. No shot attempts today. He also gave up a putback dunk ball watching. Too many of those little breakdowns from everyone today. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 3 boards, 2 assists and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: Looked like he blocked Bamba in the post, but no credit for it. Swing pass to Lance for three. Second Half: No box out and his man threw down a putback dunk.

Chandler -- -- There are sequences defensively, where he’s just nailed to the floor. With a perimeter big that becomes a little problematic. He worked it out late in the games with some clutch defensive play in the final minutes to help the Lakers down the stretch. He dove to the floor for one loose ball and also recovered to force a miss on a layup after switching on a smaller man. We saw more small ball today, however, as the Lakers just needed more mobility on D. He had the team low in the +/-. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: Illegal screen, turnover. He dunked trailing the Kuzma one-man break. Second Half: Good hustle to just tap a defensive board to KCP and it led to a breakaway score. He dove to the floor to recover a loose ball on D. Great recovery on a switch to block a drive.

Stephenson -- -- A lot of run in the second quarter as Luke let him go with starters with Ingram on the bench. He sank a couple of threes when we went small in the third after the Lakers were getting chewed apart. Good job shooting. The team wasn’t successful when he was out there, but I think that had more to do with others not bringing it. There was a play late in the first half, where you could see Lance communicating with LeBron on who to cover. LBJ kind of ignored him or just didn’t have any energy at the moment and we gave up a wide open dunk. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-8 shooting (4-6 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and no fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He drained a corner three off a swing pass. He attacked with speed off the inbounds and fed McGee for the dunk. He threw a pass out of bounds. He attacked baseline and drew FTs, he made one. He missed a midrange pull-up on iso. Second Half: He swished a three. He swished another next time down with the C on him. He missed a floater. He sank an open sideline three on a kickout. He missed a sideline three on a kickout. He missed a three on iso at the end of the quarter.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Some excellent work navigating the screens on D late in the game. That was helping the Lakers disrupt the Magic’s offense. Unfortunately, he struggled quite a bit with the perimeter shot today. He probably would have sat but he made a three in the fourth and Luke kept him out there because of his excellent work on D. He led the team with 5 steals. The big misses down the stretch, hurt. I do like him out there on the close, however (in place of whomever isn’t typically bringing it out of our young guys). He just couldn’t hit anything today. More often than not, he’ll probably knock down one of those open looks…but today you could tell he was struggling with the stroke. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-7 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 5 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He swiped a ball and lost it in transition with no call. He missed an 18-footer. Second Half: He didn’t hit iron on a three. Quick recovery on a switch to steal a pass, he then earned FTs in transition on the other end, he made both. He missed a 15-footer, got it back and bricked his next 15-footer. He blocked a three, got control of it, then hit LeBron for the dunk. He swished an open three off the two-man game with LeBron. He missed a three straight away. Great job stripping a big in the paint to get a stop with over a minute left. He missed an open wing three on a kickout.

Mykhailiuk -- -- Luke was trying to spark the team when we flatlined in the second half and mixed things up with his rotations. Svi got some burn as a result. Even though he was a +7, he played about as good/bad as anyone else. He got backdoored for a score and made just one of his two freethrows for his only points. The Stats: He scored 1 point on 0-2 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 1 assist and 1 steal in 9 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He was blocked in the paint. He got backdoored for a dunk. He allowed his man to get a running start at the rim to score a layup. He swiped a bad pass, pushed it out and was blocked out of bounds. He drew FTs boxing out a man, he made one.

Walton -- -- The Lakers pushed out to a quick 14-6 lead behind Kuzma working the post and hitting from three for 10 of those. Timeout Magic… Up 10, when Ingram sat for KCP and McGee sat for Chandler… Hart in for LeBron, who didn’t look happy about it, Lakers up 10 (I think LeBron was just getting ready to try to impose himself on the game to extend the lead, hard to tell)… The Lakers led 29-19 after the first quarter… Chandler, LeBron, Hart, KCP, Ingram… Up 7 and he sat Chandler for Stephenson, why? Maybe because Bamba is looking perimeter oriented and Hart handled him in the post… McGee back in up 9 with 8 minutes left. Hart out… LeBron imposing himself in this stint and he forced a timeout up 11 on a 7-0 run… Lonzo in for KCP up 8… Luke picked up a tech on an offensive foul on Ingram… Ingram out for Kuzma… Lakers not defending the three line. Combine that with the 14 turnovers in the half and missing FTs and they lost their lead… The Lakers led 52-51 at the half… Down 3, Hart and Chandler in for McGee and Kuzma after 4 minutes… Lakers fading fast here. Poor energy… KCP in for Ingram, who was awful… Down 12, timeout… He brought in Svi and went small with LeBron, KCP, Stephenson, Svi, Ball… Lonzo out for McGee with 2 minutes left down 15… They trailed 86-71 heading into the fourth… Kuzma, Hart, Ingram, KCP, Svi lineup to start… Lakers in the bonus after 2 minutes… This unit trimmed the lead down to 5 after about 4 minutes. LeBron in for Svi. McGee in for KCP… Hart out for KCP. Why no Lonzo? Probably because of their difficulties defending off the screens... Chandler in for McGee… They tied it up on an 11-2 run with 2:24 left… Timeout on the defensive end, tied 104-104… The Magic with a layup out of that and then a dunk in transition to lead by 4 with 10 seconds left… “The less we’re passing the ball, the more we’re turning it over,” Luke said…

Three reasons we lost the game.

1. Missed Free Throws. Lakers missed 11 free throws. Magic missed 1.

2. Turnovers and offensive rebounds. Magic got 14 more shot attempts than the Lakers (Lakers turned the ball over 18 times giving up 17 points off turnovers). Magic had 5 more offensive rebounds than the Lakers.

3. Lack of ball movement. Lakers made 37 shots on 22 assists. Magic made 42 shots on 31 assists. Better ball movement for the Magic enabled them to outscore the Lakers and win.

Of course I was there and they were a mess . Oh well...the game had definite moments but alas we couldn’t close it out.

Thanks for the write up DB. More often than not when I go to the game I come home and watch how it aired on TV. I think I might skip this one lol

Seeing Vucevic drop 30/15s with relative ease, not looking forward to what Davis or Antetokounmpo is going to do against this team.

Really really bad loss. After what they did to us few days ago I expected to beat them hard. Really disappointed with the players and with Luke for this one. I hope they can bounce back against Denver but dont see us winning that game .

Thanks DB once again for enduring stinker games like this one to provide yet another excellent T&R.

At some point the Lakers have to get used to playing alongside each other. Is being an average team in terms of turnovers and free throws too much to ask for? Just setting the bar that high and we win this game.

Thankgiving hangover game, I forgot it was even taking place at that time.

Let's give them a pass and be glad the Orlando Juggernaut is moving on to other victims this season.

The problem is that Orlando only looks like a juggernaut against the Lakers. They look average to below average against most of the other teams. The Lakers shouldn't have been swept by them.

Some teams just got our number, it happens

I remember the 2008-2010 Lakers being constantly beaten by the Bobcats
