Closing… The Lakers were seemingly swimming against the current all night. BI went down with an early ankle injury and was done for the game. Kuzma and Hart were both in foul trouble in the first quarter. In general, it felt like the Spurs had an extra man on the court with how the whistles were going their way.

But come the fourth quarter, none of that mattered. We had LeBron.

He took over, scoring 20 of his game-high 42 points with drives, post-ups, deeeeep threes – the complete game.

He wasn’t alone on the court. His trio of young teammates all came up big. Lonzo with a huge three to take the lead. Hart with two threes to fight through his foul trouble and Kuzma with some spirited defense, 9 points in the quarter and the dagger feed on a give and go to LeBron for a score.

“Those young guys made big shots,” LeBron said of the Lakers close.

Luke thought it was good progress from the youth as well as the team executing better down the stretch to close this game.

“I thought we really did a nice job tonight trusting the pass,” Luke said. They weren’t always hitting shots early, but they never stopped making the pass to the open man.

The Lakers would score 43 points in the fourth quarter to take the 121-113 win over the Spurs.

LeBron -- -- He had 13 points on 5-11 shooting in the first half to lead the team. Late in the first half, the team started settling for threes as the game slowed and the ball movement died. We’ve seen this before. The Lakers adjusted by getting the ball to LeBron at the left wing in the midrange where he went to work for some scores, including a big jam down the lane. We saw this again some late in the game, including where he backed his man down in the post, drew the D and kicked to Lonzo, who swung to Hart for the big three. That’s the kind of mixing it up in the post I wanted to see in the final couple minutes. Just a couple possessions of it. He had another possession earlier where he had backed his man down in the post and overpowered him for the easy score. So when they went back to it, the Spurs scrambled on D. The result was a nice inside-out sequence instead of a long LeBron step-back three like we’ve seen to close games. Oh, LeBron hit one of those, too. He was simply sensational in the fourth quarter. He got downhill on the Spurs and imposed himself on the game for 20 points in the fourth (our biggest scoring fourth of the season). Just a superb, MVP-like performance to pick up a struggling team. With all the fouls and the injury to BI, we had to lean on LeBron for bigger minutes and bigger impact. He came through to secure this W. After the game, he said he didn’t hear the Durant comments about the toxic media environment around LeBron and when asked of it, he didn’t bite on commenting, saying he didn’t know the context or full quote. “I’m a veteran,” he said. The Stats: He scored 42 points on 15-24 shooting (3-7 from three, 9-13 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 40 minutes. He was a +19. The Action: He attacked the paint and scored a layup. He missed a wing three. He took a long outlet and scored the And-1 layup while getting hit in the face, he made the FT. He spun on the layup and was rejected. He attacked and drew FTs just before the shotclock expired, he made both. He took an inbounds and hit a fallaway from midrange. He ran the clock, attacked and kicked to Lonzo for the three. He attacked the paint and kicked to KCP for three. He was called for a travel attacking off the three line. He missed a three behind a screen. He missed a step-back three on a busted play next time down. He sank an open wing jumper when his man was screened. Midrange wing touch again, this time he faced up, attacked down the lane and hammered over the help D. He ran clock, iso’d and missed the 20-footer. Second Half: He backed Gay down in the post and powered in the And-1 layup to start the half, he missed the FT. He missed a three. He was stripped on the break. He attacked from the left wing and hit the short jumphook. He attacked and drew FTs, he made both. Should have been FTs but the refs said he wasn’t shooting (seemed obvious he was), very weak. He attacked, spun on Aldridge, took contact and scored the And-1 at the front of the rim, he made the FT. He attacked in transition and hit Svi for three. He missed a tough running 18-footer at the buzzer. He lobbed to McGee for the dunk. He attacked off the high screen, spun around the big and scored the layup. He attacked and couldn’t finish. He took the outlet, stepped on the gas and scored the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He attacked the paint again off the high screen for more FTs, he made both. Left open on a screen and he swished a wing three. He grabbed the board, attacked with full-court with speed, spun around the D and scored the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. Busted play, he sank a 35-footer. He jumped a passing lane on the weakside, swiped the ball and quickly outlet to Kuzma for the breakaway dunk. He backed his man down in the post, drew the D and kicked out to lead to a Hart three. He ran clock and drained a three over his man. He kicked to Kuzma, quickly cut off that pass and Kuzma fired it back to him for the layup (he was wondering where the whistle was, too). He was fouled with 21 seconds left, he made one FT.

Ball -- -- Score tied with a couple minutes left and he didn’t hesitate to let it fly and take the lead with the three. Great to see. That’s more like the UCLA Lonzo. He’d find teammates in college, but make big plays late. Hopefully, that’s another of those confidence booster for him. He’s been playing more confident and aggressive of late offensively (much less of the timid stuff) and the numbers tonight reflected that. But the play that maybe depicted that the most was not necessarily that three, but a massive dunk he had over a big as he attacked down the middle of the paint. (Loved seeing him work off the LeBron screens tonight.) That’s the kid we want to see more of. He had 6 assists in the first quarter tonight. Again, not ball dominant, just finding teammates quickly. With BI possibly sidelined, we’re going to put the ball in Lonzo’s hands more to create. “We’re going to have to start splitting LeBron and Zo,” Luke said of the rotations with BI out. I think this will help him, especially if he gets to work against second units quite bit, too. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-12 shooting (3-6 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 9 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 40 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He attacked left and kicked to Kuzma for three. He missed a wing three in early offense. He got middle and hit Kuzma for the layup. He attacked off the LeBron screen and posterized a big with a massive throwdown. He attacked off the three line, hung and couldn’t finish. He rotated to swipe a pass in the paint, pushed it out and hit Hart for the layup. He missed an open wing three. He missed a tip-in attempt and then tapped out that miss. He lost the ball while leading the break. He sank the wing three on a kickout. He posted up and kicked to Kuzma for a three. He worked off the LeBron screen and hit the 16-footer. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He probed and missed the floater. Then watched on D on the other end before fouling on an And-1 putback. He sank a corner three off a kickout from Kuzma. He drew the D and hit Kuzma for three. He probed and blew the layup. He swiped a ball and was fouled. Quick outlet to LeBron who attacked for an And-1. He drained a wing three in transition when LeBron hit him. Quick swing pass to Hart off a kickout for a three. He was fouled on a defensive board with 28 seconds left, he made one FT (barely).

Ingram -- -- Great two-way start to this game (disruptive D on DeRozan on one end and hitting jumpers on the other) before coming down on Aldridge’s foot on a jumper midway through the first quarter. That was flagrant-1 on Aldridge for stepping under him, but Ingram left the court for the locker room. The Lakers missed his length on D and even just his warm body as they were strapped with some foul trouble, as well. No telling how long he will be out as he was putting a fair amount of weight on his ankle as he came down. The x-rays were negative. “It’s going to be tough. We were in a great rhythm,” LeBron said of missing BI if he’s out for some games. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-2 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 1 block and 1 foul in 5 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He set a screen, circled up top, UCLA cut around his man, took the pass and was fouled at the rim for FTs, he missed both. Good job not biting on a head fake to challenge DeRozan’s jumper well. He swished a baseline jumper on an inbounds pass. He blocked a shot in the post. He cut off ball, took the feed and swished the turnaround but came down on a foot as Aldridge stepped under him (flagrant-1), he made the FT.

Kuzma -- -- Progress is seeing him with a 22-9-5 line. Huge all-around game. But first, let me give some props to Kuzma for his defense on DeRozan late in the game. Not an easy assignment for him, but Luke wanted his length on DeRozan to slow him down after he was picking apart some other defenders in the midrange and off the screens. Kuzma stayed on the floor, didn’t bite on pumpfakes and kept DeRozan in front of him where he could use his length to challenge. His defense has been much improved lately…and he’s been keeping it up. “Really nice job of overall competing,” Luke said. Choppy first half as he got into some foul trouble and had to sit early. He still sank a couple of threes. In the fourth, he scored 9 points, hitting a three, getting fouled on one and getting out on the break for a dunk. But he had one of the plays of the game with the pass. LeBron gave the ball up with the shotclock winding down, immediately cut off the pass and Kuzma (instead of shooting a three) fired the ball back to LeBron on the move for the score. That was the dagger. Credit the coaches for making the D and the passing a focus and credit Kuz for being the good student. The numbers tonight combine the scoring with the little things that get you the W. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 7-19 shooting (3-9 from three, 5-7 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 5 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He drained a wing three on a kickout. Weird quick-fire midrange attempt in early offense and he bricked, not good shot selection. He worked off the screen from McGee in the corner and threw it back to him for a layup. He reversed off the two-man game with Lonzo. He missed a runner. He drained a corner three when Lonzo kicked out from the post. He missed a runner after crossing over. He missed a step-back three. He missed a wing three off a cross-court feed. Second Half: He missed an open baseline jumper off an inbounds. He faked a handoff, attacked and fed McGee for the dunk. He missed a jumphook. He sank a floater in early offense. He missed a three straight away. He backed his man down, drop-stepped and hit he jumphook off glass. He spun on a smaller defender and drew FTs at the rim, he made one. He kicked to Lonzo for a three. He was fouled on a three to start the fourth, he made two FTs. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He threw a pass away getting double teamed on the catch. He missed a layup trying to stretch out around a big. He missed an open wing three. He missed a corner three in transition. Quick attack from the wing off the three line and he drew FTs, he made both. Breakaway dunk off the LeBron steal to force a timeout. Beautiful job taking the feed from LeBron and then quickly firing it back to him as he cut for the layup (Luke will be proud of that one).

McGee -- -- Again, he had to deal with trying to defend shooters at times off the two-man action, which isn’t his strength. Aldridge also attacked him in the post a bit, as well. Teammates set him up for scores at the rim offensively and he also sank a wing jumper on a busted sequence. Too many turnovers. Why are you trying to push out the break? Team low on the +/-. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-4 shooting to go with 4 boards, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -21. The Action: He blocked a three, tried to dribble up court and lost it, got it back and then threw it away. He recovered to block his man. He scored a layup off the two-man game with Kuzma. Offensive foul on a pass off as he moved when a defender cut around. Second Half: He dunked off the drive and dish from Kuzma. He faced up and sank the 15-footer from the wing. He went to set a double screen, rolled off a screen from KCP, took the lob and dunked.

Hart -- -- He picked up three fouls in barely a 10-second stretch in the first quarter (the first foul erased a layup of his after a review, saying he fouled a man with his elbow on the score). He got the start for Ingram in the second half after the ankle sprain. But again got hit with fouls. He took a walk to the locker room to get some frustrations out and sit on the bench. When he came back in for the fourth quarter close, he miss a three. But he didn’t blink on his next touches from three, let them fly and drained the shots. Huge counter punches to some scoring by the Spurs late. LeBron gave him props afterward for fighting through the foul trouble and finding a rhythm late despite of it. Hart is the likely starter now while BI recovers. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-5 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He missed a wing three behind a screen. He filled a lane on the break, attacked the rim hard through contact for a layup, but they erased it after a review saying he led with an elbow, poor call. Second Half: He missed an open wing three. Fourth foul trying to defend DeRozan in the post. He forced Gay into a turnaround brick. He missed an open three off a swing pass. He swished a wing three on a kickout. He sank a wing three off the LeBron kickout and swing pass from Lonzo.

Chandler -- -- Really very few notes for Chandler in this game, but note the difference in +/- with McGee. JaVale was the team-low -21 and Tyson was the team-high +27. I think just positionally Chandler was better. He’s also aggressively show and recover off screens. Then, of course, he’d hit the boards. His only points came off a battle on the offensive glass in which he didn’t get the board, but won the possession. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 2-2 shooting from the line. The Action: Some good box outs for boards. He took a save from KCP and gave it back to him in the corner for a three. Second Half: He drew FTs battling on the offensive glass, he made both.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He got some extra run in the first half with all our foul trouble and BI’s injury. He’d finish the half with 9 points on 3-5 shooting to go with 6 boards. Kind of surprised we went with Svi more than KCP in that third quarter. That didn’t turn out well for the Lakers. He sank a couple threes in this one and hit the boards well. I think I’m most happy to see him in the game when there’s a foul situation. Luke subbed him in down the stretch and he drew the intentional FTs to help ice the game. Got to have one of those guys on your team. KCP is ours so far this season. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 3-7 shooting (2-5 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He jumped a passing lane, attacked and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He swished a corner three on a kickout. He missed a wing three, saved the rebound back inbounds, got it back and swished the corner three. He missed a corner three on a swing pass. Second Half: He missed a wing three in transition. He missed a short one. He made a tech FT. Subbed in the game for a foul situation, he was fouled and sank both FTs.

Stephenson -- -- All the lineups got scrambled tonight, so Lance was thrown into the mix. He had a couple scores, one on a baseline drive, the other on a pull-up from midrange. Nothing smooth while he was on the floor. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 block and 1 turnover in 12 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed a pull-up midrange on iso. Great strip of DeRozan to ignite a break. He missed a three on a kickout. He attacked baseline, shed a defender and scored a layup. He missed a three behind a screen. He swished a pull-up from midrange. He attacked, got caught in the air on the spin and traveled. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Beasley -- -- We went back to the Stephenson/Beasley combo in the second unit. Not good minutes tonight for Beasley as he was trying to draw some whistles that never came. Kind of par for the course for the Lakers tonight. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 1 board in 4 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He attacked, took contact and missed a runner trying to get the whistle. He posted up, spun into a triple team but he still scored over them to beat the shotclock. He attacked baseline and wasn’t close. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Mykhailiuk -- -- Luke threw him in the mix quite a bit in this one with Ingram out and the foul trouble they were strapped with. Svi struggled with the shot. Just clanking away from three on some really good looks. He just can’t get on track and some of it is obviously mental as I’m sure he’s knocking these down in practice. He even missed another FT. Tough to be a rookie sometimes. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-7 shooting (1-5 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He missed a step-back from the top of the key. Second Half: Off the mark on a lob attempt to McGee. Not squared up and he missed a wing three. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He tried to attack and was stripped. He swished an open sideline three in transition. He missed an open wing three next time down. He missed an open corner three on a kickout. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs at the rim, he made one.

Walton -- -- First play of the game is for Ingram, cutting off ball. That’s what I like to see. But also late in the game, we had LeBron a little in the post, too... Chandler in for McGee after 4 minutes, Lakers up 1… Ingram out with the ankle twist. Hart in… Kuzma with two fouls, sat for KCP who came in midway through the quarter up 2… Hart out with 3 quick fouls for Stephenson… LeBron on DeRozan defensively… Strong close to the quarter. The Lakers led 31-23 after the first quarter… He went with a McGee, Beasley, KCP, Svi, Stephenson lineup with all the foul/injuries… He called a timeout with the lead quickly trimmed to 2… Tie score, Chandler in for McGee. Timeout a play later with the Lakers down 2 with 8:06 left in the half. With that, he brought back Kuzma, LeBron and Lonzo. They quickly restored some order with a couple of threes to lead by 6… Interesting seeing the Lakers settle for threes, then adjust by getting the ball to LeBron in the midrange from the left wing to start working offense from there for scores… The Lakers led 50-45 at the half… Hart out after 2 minutes for Svi. Why not KCP?… Lakers fell back by 5 before KCP came in for Lonzo midway through the quarter. Chandler in for McGee… Up 7 when LeBron sat for Lance… Lonzo in for Svi… The Lakers trailed 82-78 after three quarters… He started a McGee, Kuzma, Stephenson, KCP, Ball lineup… They quickly trailed by 8 and Luke called a timeout… LeBron back in… McGee out for Chandler. Hart back in. Lakers down 8… So Chandler, Kuzma, LeBron, Hart, Lonzo. Kuzma on DeRozan… An 8-0 Laker run with a couple of threes and a breakaway dunk to force a timeout, up 5… KCP in for an inbounds pass with 37 seconds left. He was fouled for FTs… A 20-9 Laker run in the last 3:22…

Many thanks DB! Hooray! Won a game we should win - yes, but we also won a game where we had all the intangibles working against us and simply overpowered the Spurs down the stretch.

Great game from Lebron. Also kudos to Lonzo, Kuzma, Hart, Chandler, and KCP.

For me, maybe the first game of the season where I said, "Ok this is how a playoff team plays". There were other games that were similar, but how we executed down the stretch, played defense, and overcame adversity. Hallmarks of a GOOD playoff team.

Also the pride we showed in terms of getting revenge for our losses...

Great write up DB it must be much more fun to write this year versus the recent past.

Seems the team is really starting to come together and Lebron is what we hoped for and expected and maybe even more.

Kuz and Zo seem to be finding their stride as they have strung together a handful of games of late where they have made a significant impact. '

To bad about BI hopefully he is back soon

SVI come on man this is your chance.

Wish we had kept Randle he is killing it in NO. 19/9 and even hitting 31.8 of 3 pointers. He would have been our 2nd best player and at a very low cost too. Big mistake by Magic Rob.

It's good to be good again. 6 games over .500 for the first time since 2010-2011.

The funny thing with having LeBron. Even when we were down 95-86 with 6 (?) to play I was confideng he'd pull it out. Feels good to have that kind of player on our team once again. Good, hard fought win, especially with BI going down and Hart being saddled with foul trouble.

Also, I cannot believe that Rudy Gay is leading the league in 3PT%. Wow. Rudy freaking Gay.

That's why he gets the big bucks!

Great game by LBJ. It's incredible that he took and made a 40 ftr with confidence while the game was on the line. Plus trusting your teammates to make shots and the right plays in crunch time.

Loved Lonzo in this game. Aggressive and decisive on his two highlight plays -- the monster dunk and the wing 3. Actually, I think his most impressive play was when he leaped for a rebound in crunch time and, in one motion without hitting the ground, threw an outlet pass to LBJ on the move. No team wants to see LBJ going full steam downcourt with the ball in transition. Great heads up play by Zo.

Kuz's game has grown during these past couple of weeks. His defense, rebounds, assists are on the rise. He's becoming a more complete player and LBJ sidekick.

Hart staying mentally in the game after some odd calls was huge! That stroll into the tunnel got him to cool down and release his frustrations. Killer 3's.

The kids are growing up before our eyes. **sniffle**
