Flipping the Script… The Lakers were flying high late in the first half. They had pace in their favor (12-2 advantage on the break), they were knocking down threes and extended to a 15-point lead. Luke called a timeout after a made three, with the lead 12. The Spurs regrouped off that and rattled off an 11-0 run.

It was a critical juncture early in the game with Lakers rolling and that quickly went south. The offense was unstoppable…for both teams.

How do you score 72 points in a half and only lead by 4? Play sloppy, foul-prone, loose D.

In the third quarter, the Laker three-point shooting went dry, but they extended to a 10-point lead off a strong close to the quarter. With momentum heading into the fourth quarter, if the Lakers could win the first 5 minutes of the quarter, the game was theirs for the taking.

The Lakers had a chance to extend to 14- or 15-point lead on a possession at one point early in the fourth. It was the Spurs, however, who would win the first 5 minutes. Things went south fast. It was a tie score at the 6:45 mark and the Lakers got steamrolled from there.

They were befuddled on their screen-roll defense. LeBron was irate after back-to-back no calls in the paint.

The Spurs flipped the script on the Lakers in the fourth quarter, scoring 44 points with the Spurs bench scoring 31 on of those points in the fourth. I think DeRozan may have had the rest. The Lakers would fall 133-120.

“They just took over in that fourth,” Luke said, mentioning the Lakers had no fastbreak points in the fourth. “It’s tough to get out and run when you are taking the ball out of the net every time.”

LeBron -- -- Down the stretch in this game, not a lot of love from the refs. Some 4-point switches for the Lakers as a result. It probably wouldn’t have mattered too much with how poorly the Lakers were defending, but manufacturing points at the line when you need is pretty big for this team. Ask DeRozan, who had 18 trips to the line. Asked if he was surprised by the difference in FTAs, he just stared without answering. Some more work on the wing in iso or in the post from him in this game. The best play out of that was probably a lob to Lonzo. He had 24 points on 9-16 shooting and 8 assists in the half. Dominating offensively as the Lakers scored big. He was on triple-double pace, but no luck tonight. The Stats: He scored 35 points on 13-28 shooting (3-8 from three, 6-9 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 11 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -19. The Action: He faced up out of the post to start the game and sank the baseline jumper. He kicked out in transition to Kuzma for a three. He grabbed a rebound, pushed out with speed and bounced to Hart filling a lane for the layup. He sank a wing three over his man after a jab fake. He probed across the lane and missed a fade. He missed a wing jumper out of the mid post. He missed a wing three in transition. He took the ball in the post in the corner and lobbed to Lonzo for the And-1. He drew the D cutting down the paint and hit the trailer, McGee, for the dunk. He was fouled on a reverse with no call and missed. He muscled in a layup as we reset the offense and found him, again looked fouled with no call. He hit KCP for a wing three. He hit McGee rolling for a score. He was blocked in the paint, got it back and scored the layup. He attacked in transition, hung, got hit and couldn’t finish, then yelled at the ref. Quick change of ends and he drew FTs, he made one. He posted up, wheeled around his man to the middle for a layup. He attacked past his man and reversed for an And-1 after getting bumped under the hoop, he made the FT. He hit Lonzo on the break, who then gave it back to him at the front of the rim on a pass backward for a layup. He missed a short bank, got it back and hit the three. Lonzo saved a ball behind his back to LeBron who hit a three. He attacked off the screen and drew FTs at the front of the rim, he made one. He missed a sideline three. He iso’d at the wing, faced up and swished the jumper. He dunked off the Lonzo steal. He missed a wing three on a swing pass. He jumped a passing lane, pushed it out, spun (got away with a drag of the pivot) and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He pushed it up and missed the 17-foot pull-up. He bounced to Beasley slipping a screen for the layup. He had a big on him, settled, and missed the three. He attacked a crowd and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a runner. He attacked, got hit for what should have been FTs, but got no call and missed the layup. He attacked across the middle, got hit in the head with no call, score the other way. He hit Lonzo cutting baseline for a dunk. Not close on a three straight away. He attacked and scored an And-1 layup, he missed the FT.

Ball -- “We couldn’t guard pick and roll,” Lonzo said. They switched, got abused. He mentioned, how they blitzed and had no help side rotations. It wasn’t pretty. Offensively, he didn’t shoot particularly well, but he was still effective finding teammates and keeping the offense flowing. He had some attacks and made a couple of threes. Really like the crossover between the legs and finish at the rim. That was more guard-like offensively. The Lakers staggered LeBron and Lonzo some. Lonzo would finish the first and third quarters, then LeBron would come in to start the next two quarters. The first time in 5 years the Lakers had two players with 10+ assists as a result. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-16 shooting (2-6 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 11 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: No touch on a bank shot in the post (he is awful on those). He guided in an And-1 lob off the LeBron feed from the post, he made the FT. He missed a corner three. He couldn’t finish a drive down the middle of the paint. He crossed over but missed the 16-footer. He missed a deep three. He filled the lane, took the pass from LeBron, went in for the reverse, then fed it back to LeBron for the score. He sank a corner three. He saved a ball behind his back on the sideline to LeBron who drilled the three at the top of the arc. He worked off the dribble, crossed over, then fell for a travel. He attacked the paint and was blocked on a layup he should have finished or flushed. He missed a three to start the half. He missed a wing three. He missed a pull-up from the elbow. He passed on the open three and traveled instead. He swiped a ball and hit LeBron down court for the dunk. He attacked the paint, drew the D and fed Chandler for the score. He sank a wing three. He hit KCP on the break for the layup. He missed a layup. He dunked after cutting baseline and LeBron found him. He crossed over between his legs, attacked the paint and scored the layup. Flat-footed, he gave up a layup.

Kuzma -- -- Man, he had the floater going for him tonight. The three’s been warming up but his money floater hasn’t been as consistent as it was last year. It looked good tonight. He hit hitting those runners from all over the court. He had 17 points on 7-11 shooting at the half. I don’t know how he had just one trip to the line in this game with how aggressive he was. That’s the only aspect that was missing from him putting up a 30+ point outing. Defensively, not much resistance. The team got whistled for too many fouls on guys shooting jumpers. Kuzma was in on some of that. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 12-22 shooting (2-7 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He deflected a pass on one end and then sank a three on the other. Quick attack in early offense and he scored a layup on the baseline. Quick inbounds and outlet to him after a made basket for FTs on the other end, he made one. He attacked the paint, took contact and couldn’t finish. He got tapped on a short hook across the lane. He found Svi cross court for a three. He swiped a kickout and turned it up court to ignite a break. He attacked the paint and hooked over the defender. He sank a wing three, facing up and stroking it. He backed his man down, spun and hit the floater over the D next time down. He worked off the screen and hit a floater. Bad pass to Lonzo who was getting ready to set the screen for the UCLA cut, turnover (that’s supposed to go to LBJ). He missed a jumper from the top of the key. He took a handoff to his right, hesitated, attacked and scored the layup. He attacked from the wing and swished the floater. He missed a wing three. He attacked on the kickout and scored a layup. He crossed over, got in the paint and hit another runner. His pass was deflected as he drew a help defender, turnover. He clanked a deep three out of a timeout, not a good look. He attacked from the wing and scored off the glass, while getting knocked down with no call (should have been an And-1). He missed a much easier one-hander off glass out of a timeout. DeRozan shoved him out of the way and scored a layup. He attacked and couldn’t finish. He missed a three at the end of the quarter. He missed a forced three. Quick attack in early offense for a layup.

McGee -- -- Good job on the offensive boards and from the line. Some sloppy passes. We had no answers to the two-man game tonight, but were a little better on iso coverages. He said the Spurs did a good job pulling him out of the lane to limit his blocked shots and also hitting from the midrange against us. McGee probably had our lone defensive highlight with Kuzma, rejecting a dunk attempt at the rim when he was back in the paint on one of those drives. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-6 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 12 boards (6 offensive), 1 block, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 24 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He drew FTs when Hart got middle on a curl and lobbed to him, he made both. He dunked trailing the break when LeBron found him. He tipped in a layup off the screen-roll with LBJ. He missed a floater in the lane. He got split on the two-man game to lead to an open three when the D broke down. He tipped in a missed shot. He rejected Gay at the rim trying to throwdown. He tapped out a missed shot and it led to a Laker three. His outlet was picked off. He cleaned up a KCP missed drive. He drew FTs at the rim, he made both.

Hart -- -- He got the start with Brandon out with the sprained ankle. The Spurs sure have had it a bit lucky facing us with injuries and suspensions to BI. We could have used his length defensively. Hart wasn’t much of a factor on either end. He went 0-5 from three. He did have a nice And-1 layup on a strong attack in early offense. Good to see that again and actually get a call. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-8 shooting (0-5 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 5 boards and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He filled the lane on the break and scored a layup. He curled into the paint and lobbed to McGee for FTs. He missed a three in transition. He rushed a three, not getting his feet set behind a screen and missed. He flashed to the lane, took a pass and hit the short jumper. He missed a corner three in transition. He took the ball on the break, attacked hard and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed an open wing three. He missed a wing three.

Chandler -- -- Quiet game tonight. He was set up on a couple of drive and dishes for his points. Defensively, the Spurs didn’t even go to Aldridge down the stretch in this one. Their bench bigs worked us over on the two-man game. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-1 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Svi, he made both. He scored off the drive and dish from Lonzo. He was called for an offensive foul.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He had a couple steals and a couple threes, but it wasn’t a particularly good game. He was one of those weak points defensively in the halfcourt in the fourth. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-11 shooting (2-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 steals and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He as a -15. The Action: He drew FTs attacking in transition, he made both. He drained a wing three. He missed a corner three. He missed a corner three. He couldn’t finish a layup, then another in transition. He swiped a ball at midcourt, gave it up, got it back and scored the layup. He missed a corner three. He pounced on a bad inbounds and took it for a dunk. He drained a wing three. He gave up a layup to Mills. He missed a drive. He missed an open wing three.

Mykhailiuk -- -- He was looking a little more like himself tonight draining a couple of threes. He was frustrated after the last one and got some extra work in afterward at Staples. His teammates still trusted him and found him for threes tonight. They know what he’s doing in practice. Maybe getting away from Staples will help. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-3 shooting from three to go with 1 offensive board and 2 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He swished a wing three on a cross-court pass. He drew an illegal screen fighting over the top (taking a step up just before the screen came to draw that). He attacked off the three line and fed Chandler for FTs. He took a handoff from LeBron, stepped back and swished the wing three. He fouled a three shooter. He clanked a three in transition.

Beasley -- -- While they didn’t play all that great when he was out there, it’s nice seeing them start to develop some plays specifically for him to score. They had one play out of a timeout that resulted in a mismatch with the ball in his hands. He didn’t score out of that, but the Lakers would get the putback. He had another nice slip screen with LeBron that he scored for a layup. As the season goes along and they work in a few plays for him, the bench will get more and more effective. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board and 3 fouls in 8 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He attacked, spun and hit the short one in the paint. Out of a timeout, he got a mismatch in the post, attacked and missed, but McGee cleaned it up. He slipped a screen and LeBron hit him for the layup. He was blocked in the paint on the next possession. He didn’t hit rim on a three up against the shotclock.

Stephenson -- -- I think I blinked when he was out there. I remember seeing him for a moment. The Stats: He was a -1 in a few seconds. The Action: Nothing to report.

Bonga -- -- He checked in with a minute left in the game. Youngest player in the NBA. No real time to do anything or even touch the ball. The Stats: He played 1 minute and was a +0. The Action: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- Fast pace to start the game. They were tied 22-22 when KCP came in for LeBron… Chandler in shortly later for McGee with 4 minutes left… Svi in for Hart down 2… The Lakers led 36-32 after the first quarter… He started the Chandler, Beasley, LeBron, KCP, Svi lineup… Up 7 when Hart, Lonzo and Kuzma reentered to go with LBJ and McGee… They forced a timeout as their pace had the Spurs on their heels. The Lakers led by 8… They extended to a 15-point lead, gave up a three and Luke called a timeout… Chandler and KCP in for McGee out of that… LeBron back in for Hart, lead down to 8… The Lakers led 72-68 at the half. They had just 3 turnovers… Both teams struggling to warm up in the third quarter. Eventually, the Lakers forced a timeout after taking a 6-point lead… Chandler in up 5… Up 4 when LeBron sat for KCP… He started the Chandler, Beasley, LeBron, Svi, KCP lineup again to open the fourth… A chance push it to 14 or 15, but couldn’t score, then gave up a couple hoops and fouled a three shooter and the lead was down 5… McGee in, Laker lead just 3… Luke called a timeout up 1 off the 18-7 run… Lakers getting picked apart on the screen-roll. Weakside help was late, but the Lakers were also way too soft on the initial D on those plays… The steamroll continued as the Spurs bench dominated against poor Laker defense…

Horrible loss. They should've won this one. The officiating was disgraceful.

Refs had their hands on the result. The game was handled to the Spurs.
Thanks, DB.

We are like the Oklahoma Sooners in college football. Their coach said they have been recently improving in defense. I believe Luke said something similar. Hey, at least the Sooners reached the Final Four Playoff.
